The Gen 2 games aren't a unique gen like every other after it. They are basically just sequels to Red and Blue in the same vain B2W2 are to Black and White.

The presentation of gen 2 is virtually the same as gen 1. If you want to be technical with BW being a soft reboot in a way B2W2 added essentially a whole new dex of pokemon for new players.

Its still its own generation, but they were developed as Pokemon 2, and thinking of them as sequels (which they are) clarifies nearly all the weird things about Gen 2.

gen 2 is literally the only game people will do these bizarre mental gymnastics over their own HEADCANONS because they really want to treat gen 2 as dimunitive (even though it's rent free in their head 24/7)
I'm not trying to bash Gen 2. I love Johto but the games make more sense to me when you read them as sequels to RBY instead of it's own Gen like everything after.

I love generation 2, but in a lot of ways it really does feel like an expansion pack to R/B/Y rather then their own games.
You can clearly tell this by how much harder it is to find the at the time new Pokemon that were introduced then and how easier it was to find all your old favourites.
Also that you can revisit Kanto and Johto does feel a little small.
gen 2 added more to the series than any other gen.
It's more of a generation with an enduring legacy than gen 5 and later combined will ever be. Zoomers can keep seething about their shitty childhood generation.

- Added dark & steel types
