He wanted to make Dwarf Fortress in 3D and the he saw Infiniminer using voxels and first person perspective, and basically used those basic concepts to make a game about playing as a worker grunt in a base building game, which was an amazing idea. It wasn't pure luck but it wasn't a stroke of genius either.
