Personally I would prefer free movement, but the biggest thing I have against it right now is that it has randomly generated levels. Like come on man. And it looks so barren and lifeless, which is common with random generation. Maybe by the time the game is finished it'll look better, and the random generation will actually be good, but I have my doubts.

Borderlands weapons were designed with modular components, with each component having its own stats and sometimes special effects. When you find a gun, you get a random combination of stats and effects plucked from a pool of millions of potential unique combinations. Some of the combinations will be total shit, but some will be game-breaking.
Somehow he's doing that with swords and capes. Like you might find a sword with a hilt that makes you swing faster + blade that does bleed damage + whatever. I think the success of this will partly depend on how interesting of effects he can program. Considering the minecraft enchant system was kinda similar, he may have some aces up his sleeve.
