I'm about to buy a deck.
    Tell me about dual boot.
Is it going to take up a lot of space in SSD?
Can it customize and adjust the power settings like steamos can?

      >Tell me about dual boot.
windows will eat your linux partition on update
      >Is it going to take up a lot of space in SSD?
yes, better buying a windows optimized device like asus rog ally
      >Can it customize and adjust the power settings like steamos can?
default windows cannot do this. you want armor crate which is exclusive to asus rog ally

        Anonymous

I would get a rog ally, but it currently have a lot of launch hiccups, and there's also the SD card being fried issue that pop up recently, and most likely due to hardware designs, so they can't fix that easily.

Another question for SteamDeck owner then, how often do you encounter a game that you can't launch?

          >how often do you encounter a game that you can't launch?

And hope they will come up with an update to optimize low watts' battery performance, so I can use it for more than 5 hours like SteamDeck can.

Most of my games on Steam play out of the box. Non-steam games require some fiddling for them to work but it's still doable. It's only some multiplayer ones that are impossible to run.

ltsc also can brick your linux. some updates override the bootloader. the only way to prevent that is to completely remove windows update from the hdd, otherwise it will turn on at some point and do the needful

absolutely moronic. I have been dual booting windows 11 on my deck for a year now, and literally nothing has happened. How desperate do you have to be to make this shit up?

just because it didnt happen to you doesnt mean its not happening. windows update not only bricks other systems, it often bricks windows too. every few weeks windows update literally uninstalls graphic drivers and replace them with windows update ones. there are literally tutorials on youtube how to disable this "feature". widows is that shit

      >Is it going to take up a lot of space in SSD?
Yes. Windows is a space hog to the point a lot of people boot Windows out of a high capacity microSD instead, or a sata/nvme enclosure to usb-c. Also Windows doesn't play nice with Linux bootloaders, installing it on the same SSD with SteamOS might brick the latter's installation.
      >Can it customize and adjust the power settings like steamos can?
It can but it's much less convenient. In Steam Deck's default OS the power management menu can be brought up with a couple of button presses after boot.

Good choice. I love my deck. I travel a lot for work and privately so it's perfect.
I don't wanna be that forum guy but genuinely curious: why dualboot? Everything just werks on steamOS.

        Anonymous

I'm just saving dual boots as the extra option in case there's any games that I wanted to play doesn't work on photon.
I already found 1 game that's an old game and had to run with dxwnd, and have music not playing issue.

You're really better off just buying an SSD and putting windows on that and then swapping when you want it

Sounds too troublesome, and I have to bring another ssd with me all the time?
        No thanks.

Have you tried Lutris? There is a fix for that. I currently dont have my deck with me but after install you can just hit "configure" and open winecfg, go to the "Libraries" tab and set dsound to "Builtin."

      >windows moronation not worth the compatibility in most cases. steamOS is plug and play nicely integrated with steam and more polished. steam deck can already run windows if that's such an issue
      >base steam deck with a 1TB 2230 ssd (400+80 bucks) costs less than base Rog Ally (600 bucks)
      >valve committed to providing updates that consistently bring significant performance improvements and new features, excellent customer support, asus might give up the device after half a year, has a bad reputation with customer support

        >Trackpads
the post literally ends right there. If you've never played something on deck you won't understand the sheer bliss you get by having those. Touch menus, mouse movement and remappability are insane on those. I won't start a console war since they are both PCs, but Rog Ally really isn't an option.

Installed like 20 half life 1 mods on my deck last night from a /vr/ recommendation thread and they run great, can't wait to use them to learn gyro

      Anonymous

I add gyro to so many games man. Even RTS like Ghost Master. Binding middle mouse button to touching of the right stick and also enabling gyro with it makes for amazing camera movement.

        Anonymous

Oh that's a great idea, thanks for that. I was going to try an RTS setup soon, been mulling over it in my head. So far I was thinking this:

Left analog stick - Camera movement
Left trackpad - Bound to minimap area and left-click on touch, meaning it moves the map around as you want
L1/R1 - Left/right click (not sure which side is which)
L2 and R2 - Ctrl and Shift for managing control groups
D-pad - Numbers 1-4 for managing and selecting control groups
Face buttons - Movement commands like attack move, patrol, etc
Right analog stick - Radial menu for selecting unit commands like spells. This will be easier on games where it's standardised to always use QWER or similar, but could be done for any game with tinkering.
        Right trackpad - mouse movement

This leaves all four back buttons free for whatever unique stuff each game has, such as diplomacy/research menus and such.

          Anonymous

You're welcome. It works really well. You can also invert individual gyro axes if something feels unnatural. I recommend you learn about mode shifts and changing action sets while holding down a key. I have an amazing profile for Dungeon Keeper 2 you might wanna look into to give you an idea. It is called "Dungeon Keeper 2 - Perfect Layout" or something. Just search for "Dungeon Keeper 2" in the community on some game.

            Anonymous

Great, thanks, I will check that. I've not used mode shifts or actions sets yet, purely radial and touch menus.

              Anonymous

Last tip for touch menus. ALWAYS go to the options of the menu and set the trigger type to "Touch release", otherwise you'll get very different outcomes to what youre actually trying to do

              Anonymous

For the DK2 profile I set touching the stick to hold down X on keyboard and then made the stick a mouse and set the mouse movement speed extremely low, you can really do a lot to make everything work nicely

          Anonymous

I also usually go for right stick for camera movement, just because it is more intuitive. You could then use the left stick for a radial menu.

            Anonymous

This makes sense now that I think about it, although I am a bit concerned about using the right hand for literally everything at once. Still, I guess that's how RTS works with a mouse anyway.

              Anonymous

Left stick should either be a radial menu or WASD for RTS imho

Ganker is the spoiled child that's throwing tantrum for attentions.
They don't even hate the thing, they just want attentions so badly because they didn't interact with anybody at all for days, weeks, months or even years.

The problem with Ganker is that the people who hate something or just want to shitpost can do it all day like morons and never have to regard any opinion to the contrary. Of the people who actually like the thing a portion of them will post so autistically that you can't tell it from trolling, another portion will just blandly say they liked it, and the rest will focus only on the shit they don't like about it either because they're so brainwashed by "both sides" bullshittery that they must find fault in everything or because they actually found faults and want them fixed and come here to scream into the void.
This makes it seem like everyone hates everything because every post is negative.

It didn't flop people just hyped it up as something it wasn't. The deck was never made to compete with the Nintendo Switch it was made to compete with Handheld PCs. When you accept that reality it's the most successful device in it's circle.

      >When you accept that reality it's the most successful device in it's circle.
tbh that's probably the GPD win 4 or the Max 2 or whatever. They sell VERY well in China and Japan, and those countries are far bigger on handhelds than western countries.
