Yes and no. I enjoy playing easy games more, like Anno 1800 or Planet Zoo, but I still like hard stuff too. Like right now I'm trying to get all the achievements in Nioh 2, and that's one of the more difficult gaming things I've ever done. And just last year, I 100%d the Batman Arkham trilogy. Knight had some brutal challenges at the end.

This. I still like difficulty but I can appreciate easy games more than I could before. I used to be one of those absolute Black folk who screeched “everything but Dante must die is a tutorial and not the real game” but I’ve realized what horseshit that is and am able to enjoy roflstomping everything AND dying 20 times to learn a single fight because I realized I’m still getting 100% of the game experience either way and nobody else’s opinion matters.
I’m also getting into racing games - bought a wheel and pedals and chair - and suck so much fricking ass it’s ridiculous. I’ve been in actual race cars and done track time, I’m even planning to do the BMW Nurburgring experience next year, but I can’t corner in GT7 to save my life even with every assist on. I know it’s the game, because they disable shifting unless you’re in full manual which no cars do anymore, but still.

because developers adjust future content/projects based on what players liked and didn’t like.
for example, FFXIV had some decent dungeons for the ARR launch, but they where lengthy and after doing them 100 times players developed strategies to rush through them as fast as possible.
the devs saw this and began designing future content into corridors to facilitate the speedrunning their players so enjoy.
so it’s worth mentioning once in a while that some players aren’t in a hurry.

        Anonymous

        >to facilitate the speedrunning their players so enjoy.
        Sort of
What they really did was design dungeons in a way that the tank can reasonably enter it without having run it previously or recently and still do fine.

In ARR launch tanking was rather involved as the expectation was on you knowing the skips or how much to pull in every single dungeon. Otherwise you'd be in that dungeon single pulling for anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes. Design started implementing more progression walls where you can't pull further and now in this current age all dungeons let you go from "wall to wall" without worrying about overpulling.

Maps like Aurum Vale were always superfluous though. Two paths through but everybody and their mother always hugged the left wall rendering all that enemy filled space pointless.
Essentially they had good maps for single player dungeons that are at odds with the reality of an MMO where 2-3 other entire people are with you and have different schedules with which to do content.

Hate these posts where people rationalise their casualismo. This is unironically a skill issue. He sounds like he has been playing video games for a while so if anything he should just be getting better. I'm almost 30 and I play literally every game on hard mode first playthrough because I have just played so many games that shit is like second nature to me. There's not even a noticable difficulty increase. In pretty much any game, basically the only really difficult stuff are optional objectives/areas/bosses or difficulties you unlock after completing it once (or where the game clearly warns you it is unfair), which you probably won't worry about if you're this guy anyways. And if you DO want to do those things, just get fricking good

It has a negligible effect on single-player games where you can take your time and try the same thing over and over. Esports stars are young because they played fast-paced multiplayer games where quick reactions actually do matter. Not the case for singleplayer.

Intelligence declines after age 10. If people were a danger of still learning things schooling would go longer than it does.

          Anonymous

Schooling going on for as long as it does is just feminization and profiteering. Feminization because women have a tendency to infantilize and try to keep the kids in the nest for way longer than they need to be. Infantilization is one of our biggest modern problems. Teens make mistakes, but that's also the time to be making them, rather than when you're 30. They should be in the shop getting used to independence and looking for a marriage partner at 16 years old, and dad (a well-rounded man in his mid-30s, having had 20 years to hammer that out himself) should be right there giving sane advice. Then their kids will be healthy and the parents won't be 60 years old when the oldest kid turns 18. Profiteering because schools make more money by keeping you in there for longer, even if it's not what's best for you. Need to justify a tax hike or why you shouldn't be laid off from your overstaffed school? Just spread two years' worth the math classes out over eight years so that you have more students! Everyone who challenges you is a backwoods hick who just hates education! Listen to the cheers from the infantilizing women! Neoliberalism, everyone!

You can still learn shit after the age of ten. You can learn shit at age 50 if you've been learning your whole life. That's a dumb statement.

Not him, but I think that if you've spent your whole life stacking boxes and watching television and then you try to pick up electrical engineering at age 55, you'll probably fail. Your ability to form new paths in your brain does decrease with age.

If you've spent your whole life writing programs and playing games that include critical thinking, that's not as true. Old engineers can be exposed to a novel problem and still figure it out.

Yeah, the last game I can think of that actually made difficulties interesting was The Evil Within 1 where hard difficulty actually changed enemy spawns and item pick ups.
Then you also had Akumu mode which was hard mode except you have 1HP so essentially forced no hit run.
Then a stealth centred DLC had Kurayami mode instead that disabled all lights and made everything pitch black except for your flashlight.
I still don't understand all the negative opinions this game had on release, outside of dogshit PC port that was quickly and easily fixed with mods it was a really solid game.

Then TEW2 released to much higher acclaim and hard mode just ups enemy health and nothing else, how thrilling...

Any 'hard' mode is moronic because it's just pumping health/damage. There's no change in AI-behavior, no addition of enemy abilities, no new/changed enemy placements, no combinations of different enemies as teams -- nothing. There's nothing that is inherently harder about 'hard' mode. It's just broken, because the game isn't balanced around those numbers to begin with. This kind of stuff only appeals to legit mentally challenged and masochists. Give me a game that actually changes something other than health/damage in 'hard' mode.

The end goal of every game should be to eventually test your limits against the most difficult variation of it. Theres no shame in not being good at some games or not enjoying them, but it doesnt change the fact that youre bad at that game. No, I feel like I'm much better at games now than when I was a kid and I tend to prefer harder difficulty modes as long as it's not some gimmick mode. Lack of challenge often makes games boring. This even applies to competitive online MP, like I used to really suck ass at RTS because there was too much to do all at once. I'm certainly not great at this point either, but I'm at least average and I don't feel like I'm struggling with the most basic skills the game expects me to have.

Anon playing video games IS wasting time. Thats the point of the entire hobby. But having to cheat to get through the easy part of the game is just sad, since you didnt even overcome a challenge you arguably wasted your time even more than some shitter banging his head against the hiisi base.

        Anonymous

Try making the gameplay fun instead of having 3 boring biomes full of nothing. Luck isn't fun in a game that wastes your time this much to get a run going. Hiisi base isn't even a problem. Later areas go much smoother because you can't even go there if you aren't strong enough anyway, assuming you don't just rush to portals for whatever purpose.

Hiisi base isnt a problem but its also the biggest roadblock for bad runs. Not that you would know since you already said you cheated to beat it.

I didn't beat it because I didn't cheat. The real roadblock is realizing you're wasting time every time you get a shitty wand or spell. You don't even need to progress that far to know you're fricked.

I always start out on normal, since difficult will vary depending on genre, game, developer, etc., and there's really no way to know for sure what you're getting into before you've played it. On top of that, different games have different appeals. I love Half-Life, but frick playing that game on hard - it just turns everything into a bullet sponge. On the other hand I'd never play Doom on anything but Ultra-Violence, since it would just be boring. I wish more games had a Bastion-like approach to difficulty, where you can tweak it during gameplay to push yourself a bit extra for a greater reward

It's all about finding your personal sweet spot that lets you enjoy the game the most, but as a rule of thumb: too easy > too hard

      >but as a rule of thumb: too easy > too hard

        Anonymous

The problem with too hard is that it can sour the experience. If you're making an arcade-like game that's probably not an issue, but if you're telling a story it can be detrimental. Of course, if you make a game much too easy, that can also ruin the experience, since it can feel like the stakes don't matter when the enemy is incapable of wiping their own ass. If anything, it's really just an argument for having difficult selection in the first place: let the player find their own sweet spot

          Anonymous

the chance of souring the experience is worth it. when the player quits the game because it's too hard the game will still remain intriguing and there is a high chance the player will return to it for the mystique of unbeaten game alone. when you quit a game because it's too easy there is no such mystique. when you think about trying the easy game again you're reminded of the boredom. hard games genuinely have higher player retention than easy games.

Void Stranger is an excellent game that has both an intriguing story/world building and high difficulty.
There are many who got filtered by the gameplay because they cant into pushing blocks.
I think its a good thing. The devs didnt want to hurt their vision by giving people an easy way out.
They couldve sold out and gotten much bigger just by making the story easy to access but they chose not to.

Videogames were better when they were more niche, since they didn't need to appeal to morons.

The game has to be balanced around something. I get the feeling that the next step in your argument is that it should be balanced around the majority, which in your mind, means the dumbest people. And then the next step is to question whether the harder difficulties are necessary, because it's just a minority. And then the next step is to declare that the harder difficulties have to go because only toxic manbabies care about that.

Enough with this push to dumb down games. No, it doesn't ruin the story if the player has to push through a challenge to get through it, and I don't think that devs should feel obligated to make their games so that literally everybody (game journos included) can clear it. Because that'll make the game boring to a sizable portion of the rather large audience of people who play games. If you have to choose between grandma being able to beat it and your actual customers having fun, choose the latter.

The number of times I have to damage an enemy, the number of times I can fail at dodging danger, the time I have to complete tasks, what's accessible to me and at which time, anything about the game really, it's all handcrafted and tweaked to be enjoyable on normal.
I've tried too many games on harder difficulties, most don't get harder if you can already complete normal, they just artificially last longer or have some bullshit checks that I don't care about.

Yeah, this is massive cope. The amount of inherent skill / muscle memory along with just knowledge and familiarity with game mechanics should give you a massive advantage as an adult compared to being a kid who didn't know shit and probably wasn't even smart enough yet to understand how games worked. It's just cope. It's true that your reflexes might degrade a bit but that's the sort of thing which matters if you're some top 0.1% competitive player, not a way to justify to yourself why you want to play on easy mode since SP games are often extremely easy in general.

When people out themselves as morons who are simultaneously elitist, sanctimonious, tasteless, and stupid with a disdain for their audience and are legitimately offended by people having fun with things that they don't like, people should pay attention instead of just writing it off. For me, it feels more like a "time issue" instead of a "skill issue".

    >Be me in my 20s
    >Work a shitty retail job

    >Can sustain self of fast food or frozen pizzas thanks to metabolism
    >Can power through a day on 4 hours of sleep

    >Work a corporate 9-5
    >Still occasionally hang out with friends
    >Tastes changed and want to eat healthier
    >So cook most of my meals which takes more time + more clean up
    >Need at least 6 hours of sleep but still feel exhausted
    >Have a house and small bit of land to upkeep
    >Got into gardening and trying to exercise more
    >Also went back to school to try to make a career jump in the new few years

In other words, the amount of free time I have to dedicated to games has decreased as my focuses shifted and I had new needs in life. In my 20s, I didn't mind spending hours upon hours to gitgud, top charts in PvP, or 100% games because I didn't have too much else going on. Now that I'm in my 30s, I want the couple of hours I have here-and-there to feel somewhat productive. So I've grown to favor more casual, easier games even though I still do like being challenged. I still play most games on normal difficulty. And when I do want to play something harder, I wait for a day where I can play completely uninterrupted so I can focus and actual learn to gitgud but those days are few and far between.

It's 100% a time issue, neets still flourish in their 30's but someone with a busy schedule isn't going to have time to keep their vidya skills honed and people that go from one fotm to another are going to play on easy to get through it before the next new game they play 20 hours of before dropping comes out.

Even people that play games all day will think their reflexes have gone to shit if they're mostly playing games that don't require quick reactions, stuff like mobile games and card games come to mind. Then they play one that does require reaction time and they blame being old instead of being "out of shape".

I play normal modes and if I like the game I'll try hard mode.

Never let your age define your vidya enjoyment. Fight against the tides of time. Strive to be an 80 year old man who can keep up with the youngins in Counterstrike.

Now that I'm older I understand why harder modes exists. When I was a child I played all games on easy because all I cared about was to beat the game. As an old man now I play them all on their hardest difficulty because is just more fun that way. Games are supposed to be challenging in some way if not then they lose their purpose. Just watch a movie instead and stop wasting time playing games just to go through the motions.

World of light in smash is actually the gayest sp mode ever made and should be played on easy

      Nah
World of light is fricking atrocious but there's still the occasional fun 3~4 star fight
Playing the mode on easy would make it so that every single fight ends in one single hit, basically turning the entire game into a 1 star fight marathon

It shouldn't be played at all
      >t. actually beat Abadango once so I'm more authoritative on Smash than you, and never played WoL after like the first eight stages

Nope. 35 and I've felt more inclined to start on the harder modes for a sense of CBT and a good laugh.

No. I'm 34 and on six figures. I will not waste my time on a game which focuses on story. If you're playing something where storymode is an option, then you are a zoomer homosexual playing gay shit.
