I like the ones that do their own thing with the mon, but the ones like Alolan Muk that completely outclass their other form just seem unfair.

SM were the only games to do them right, they felt like extra mons, just there for worldbuilding and fan service.
Then immediately after in Gen 8 you got Pokemon that only evolved from regionals. I feel like Alolan forms vs the originals could be considered roughly on par, but shit like Obstagoon or Overqwil make the OGs feel utterly pointless.
Paldea gives you regionals in all but name with convergents and paradox forms that on top of outclassing their originals even get a dex number now; these don’t feel like bonuses they feel like bloat, easy ways to increase that “new Pokemon” number without having to try as hard.

If anything it’s left me feeling nostalgic for when we didn’t have these forms at all.

regional variants were overall a mistake for the reasons gave

I agree with regional exclusive evolutions, they always rubbed me the wrong way. But I really like convergent forms, I can see what you mean by feeling like bloat but I feel like they're different enough to warrant it. Should've leaned more into how they went with the wiggler one, where the first stage is pretty similar but the second stage veers off way more.

Paradox forms still feel more like flavor then actual pokemon however, I do like some of them but fact they're all mono stage despite most having evolutions feels weird.

Alola did it right and made sense. Anything else after it feels forced, cheap, lazy and even more obviously gimmicky.

      Anonymous

i feel like the same could apply to the generational gimmicks as well
megas and z-moves felt natural but dynamax/gigantamax and tera feel forced. dmax and tera is just z-moves on steroids and gmax is just megas with red clouds hovering above the pokemon's head

        Anonymous

imo megas and dmax/gmax are the only ones that felt forced and it's because they were really poorly integrated into their stories - very hamfisted. z moves aren't very important to the plot of gen 7 at all and tera is very well grounded in the plot of gen 9, to the point it actually supports the story the game is already trying to tell, while the other gimmicks spend most of their respective games stepping on the toes of any narrative the games are trying to get across. megas in particular were really, really bad about this and basically overshadowed any plot XY AND ORAS had.

toedscruel would be much better if it changed the design more to look like an actual mushroom and just tentacruel with a new color scheme. cool idea, lazy execution

        Anonymous

Toedscruell is great and I dont get why people dont like it.

It would go a long way if they replaced the red gem motif with something completely different to give it some more identity. I think a texture on the cap would look cool. Real mushrooms have lots of different textures and colours, so they could have done anything really. Perhaps a palette-swapped fly amanita texture or something, idk.

i loved these from day one, fantastic worldbuilding and a great way to expand on existing ideas while giving each new region a bit of identity, all while reflecting real world ecology. regional forms, regional evolutions, and now convergent mons - they're all great additions and i wouldn't want a new game without them.

just sems like they went to Pokemon that Game Freak wanted to do something cool with but the higher ups didn't consider them worthy of getting super saiyan forms like megas or real buffs so they got recolored cousins instead.

Variations of old mons were bound to happen eventually and Pokémon handled it the best possible way by making them about differences in environment. I always look forward to seeing the new ones.

Johto had the excuse of being born during the ground zero of Game Freak’s KANTOOOO obsession and being stuck as KANTOOOO’s backyard. every Gen 2 cross evo would be decent as part of its own family instead of being haphazardly attached to a KANTOOOO line it had nothing to do with. Sinnoh evos are just ugly and fat.

Just looking at Eeveelutions alone the Johto ones are some of the most liked and the Sinnoh ones are some of the least liked. You also have Scizor and Crobat which are very popular. The Sinnoh ones pale in comparison.

It looks too much like Tentacruel. When I look at it I don't see 'Mushroom', I see 'Walking Jellyfish'.
I do like it because Tentacruel is already an intrinsically good design, but I think they totally botched the execution all the convergents.

I like em, but the whole regional evolution was poorly executed, because instead of making them an alternative, they become a stright upgrade that leaves you wondering why would you want the original if it cannot evolve.

Honestly I'm surprised it took as long as it did. Pokemon being different depending on the climate seems so obvious in hindsight. There's some pokemon that I don't care for but some where the regional form became my favorite version of them. They definitely front loaded too many gen 1 variants though.

Alola did it the best given the excuse of an isolated island chain. Other than that, the Hisui ones were mostly okay. Gigasalmon, ursaluna, wyrdeer, and stellar’s sea eagle braviary really fit well. Although, I guess you could chock most of that up to good crossgen evolutions locked behind regional forms. Especially since Sinnoh didn’t really take advantage of being based on Hokkaido at all. Galar and Paldea weren’t great. Felt like just having them to have them. Sirfetch’d was cool though. Also what they did with the Kanto birds was kinda weird. Call them regional forms but have the dex imply that they’re just named after the Kanto birds for being mistaken for them by Galarians.

honestly introducing alt evolutions to seperate forms is a really cool idea that I wish sv expanded on more past clodsire but as a mechanic its alright
its neat from a world building standpoint but for inbattle purposes its all over the place
