This is the ultimate truth. The game never withstood the test of time. A standard shot for shot remake would have underperformed financially even more which is why square avoided it. There were post hype reviews of the original you can still find online where it scored in the high 8s several months later. FF7 was just very much right place at the right time. Solid game that was exalted to legendary status due to a massive installbase that was simultaneously new to the genre and hungry for something good. You simply can't "remake" something like that and expect similar effect.
No one is buying the console for one game, a frick ton of normal gays own PS5s and they only care about fifa and madden. Also 16 and forspoken flopped as well. People scream about MUH PLOT TWISTS but not a lot of people really gave a frick about it, definitely not enough to tank the sales of the next game. The pacing was a huge part of what I loved about the first game, so it kinda killed my hype for the rest. FF7 is no longer the cultural juggernaut that 37 year old men think it is, and most of THOSE didn't want a big budget tentpole ARPG trilogy across 7 years and 2 consoles. It says a lot that Maximilian Dood is the face of hyping up FF7R.
The FF7R games aren't that bad but I agree with some of the posters here that side quests to find cats doesn't really justify all the bloat. I feel bad because SE has such good talent and the new FF games are incredibly amazing. The visuals, music, sounds, UI, everything is perfect. The only drawback is how painfully slow and tedious everything is. One of the beauties of most RPGs is that you can play through the game faster if you know what to do and after exploring for a bit, but these games are just locked to the rails from start to finish. The way they implemented it by smashing old systems with new graphics is just kind of janky.
The best thing SE has made recently is unironically SoP. They were at their best with team ninja designing the combat system. Square needs to stick with team ninja and keep working on making multiplayer co-op action games like this, they might find a good audience.
Snoys and Xjeets don't actually buy video games outside of the CoD/Madden/FIFA axis and like one or two other overmarketed games per year. The target audience for a console is not the target audience for a Final Fantasy game.
This of course doesn't take into account the issues that FFVIIR has itself but that's why every console exclusive that isn't done by Nintendo is a flop.

This was NEVER a comparison people made in the past. Its kind of silly to use the excuse since you can essentially never compare franchises released on different consoles under that logic. However, everyone does anyway, including the companies that make them. The reason is because at a certain point more consoles sales dont increase the amount a game sells. It obviously sets a minimum threshold, but we can see time and time again that franchise sales are not 1-1 consistent with hardware sales.
