this is the only final fantasy I didn't play (besides 1-4) I heard that the combat is broken really easily, and the game is braindead combat. So I avoided it. I am not going to invest my time into a full JRPG if it plays itself.
It's broken very easily once you understand the mechanics of the game. For people playing it before the rise of broadband, knowing what skills to take first, to tackle the Diablos fight as early as possible, how to maximize your usage of skills like card, magic refine, item refine, and enc-none to guarantee you ended the game around level 20 to bypass the game's aggressive level scaling was something of an unknown. It's still my all time favorite despite its shortcomings.

You never need to draw magic once, you only need it to get GFs as early as possible
and to get spells without worrying about leveling up
you get spells faster from refinement, and the items for then faster through playing cards
all you really ever want is card and enc-none, you get 3 str-j GFs over the course of the game

FFVII was the first I ever played. VIII was the one I got REALLY into and enjoyed the characters and story and understood all the mechanics. IX was a return to form.
But why is 8 so bad? Is it the insipid, tedious combat, is it the terrible story told awfully featuring nondescript characters, or is it just that the music is too bland to be memorable?
Of all the things to shit on 8 for music is not one of them, probably the best one.
I wasn't gonna take anon's bait, but yeah. 8 is Uematsu's most consistent body of work by a decent margin. Literally no track is wasted space.
