I've never played d&d in my life but I have read many of the 3e books and 5e seemed like a major step down in the name of reduced complexity, ironic because all the tabletop games I have played are overall even simpler than 5e
I like 5e, but I think the game excels at other things like dialogue choices, dialogue, great graphics, animations, soundtrack, atmosphere, story, etc. that make it worth checking out as long as you don't absolutely hate the turn based dnd gameplay. But I can understand why someone wouldn't want it. I still do think it's the game of the decade, and arguably of all time.
The only thing BG3 has for it is the soundtrack. Hard battles with what sounds like fricking Susumu Hirasawa blasting some Berserk tracks is crazy
complexity for its own sake is bad
a simple game can have the same depth if the simplification is well-designed by smart people
