Now that the dust has settled, is Half-Life 2 a good game? Objectively, without nostalgia or "it influenced every game after 2004 bro" factors?

mental illness
what is
>is good game a good game?
It's shit.
HL1 too.
It was too obvious that the story was axed.
i dont get what you mean
they cut everything between 4 and 8 but other than that it was mostly the same.
It's okay. All HL2 ideas are truly and fully realized in Episode 2
Is Half-Life 2 Episode 2 good then?
Yes.
One of the best FPS games of all time and the best HL game
But the shooting in it is bad and final level is a slog
The shooting is fine and the last level is literally the best part of the game
Why is it the best in your opinion?
It's like all the best aspects of Half-Life gameplay distilled down to its purest form and injected in to one level and it's also the first good final section in the series
It's pretty good. Any other answer is wrong.
Yes, it's good. Not amazing good or revolutionary good, but a perfectly solid experience.
Epic
Its pretty weak
>piss poor guns
>moronic AI
>annoying story segments that halt gameplay
>bad vehicle sections
HL1 is the better game no doubt.
How can you complain about HL2 having bad guns and AI and then praise HL1 when HL1's guns were objectively weaker and HL1's AI was objectively more moronic?
HL1's environments and challenges were better, especially on hard difficulty
you're right about the AI but the guns were way better in hl1
This, all HL weapons except for pistol had a great impact against all enemies, HL2 is just a downgrade in this regard
you had to be there
what happened there
>Now that the dust settled
The dust settle almost 20 years ago zoomer, it’s a decent well made fps, that’s it
It's epic
It's good
It's bad
It's over
How long has it been over
It's dead, Jim
It's just a little airborne! It's still good! It's still good!
It’s a glorified tech demo, but the world building was nice I guess. The gameplay is mediocre and its everything else that makes it worth playing at least once.
Garrys mod pre-10 was the best thing about HL2 anyways.
Was gameplay bad?
It’s just slow and mediocre. Just a bunch of puzzles showing off the physics engine. The fire fights are nothing special. Episodes 1 and 2 did improve the gunfights a lot.
Yeah the main game has too little classic tactical shooting HL1 has and spends too much showcasing new epic mechanics. They make up for it in the end in the city but it's still worse than HL1
it's good because of the minimalist but incredibly effective environmental storytelling
I didn't like it even back then, the episodes were much better.
its decent
honestly i think valve's overall influence on games has been mostly negative
they made the only good coop shooter game in the history of games (l4d2)
valve are reddit
valve are NOT reddit
valve = reddit
valve owns reddit?
VALVE is not reddit I REPEAT valve is not reddit
VALVE IS NOT REDDIT IT JUST IS NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Game is a bit dated now but at the time it was revolutionary. Did a lot of things no other game had done before, as did the original Half-Life. I remember the citadel and end were impressive the first time I played it. Seeing fully animated faces, dogs animations and the gravity gun were also impressive.
it was the last time i had a gaming pc, i saved up just to get it and it was awesome. absolute classic
whats your favorite level
It's very mediocre compared to 1. Looking back from hindsight, the 2003 hack/leak pretty much killed the game straight up.
It's a good 2004 tech demo though, and for 2004, it looked way better than games coming out that year, and the few years that followed.
I still don't really understand why leaking the game justified remaking ALL OF IT completely
The leak wasn't a polished game. It was a lot of janky half finished levels they were clearly still iterating on. Even if it didn't get leaked, the finished product would have probably still been different.
then how did it kill the game
not the anon that originally posted the comment, but I think it killed hype for the game because it got a massive delay because of the leak.
so it sold bad or something?
no. it sold very well. it was the first major game to launch on steam and ended up crashing the service on and off for a few weeks.
how is it killed then
valve is based
reddit*
It's a solid game with a few neat sections. I'd give it an 8/10, and I'll call Ravenholm the best section.
but is it reddit?
is it
not
