Never played Persona, but the ones on the left all look a lot less distinct than the ones on the right. I don't know which side is the remaster, but the first impression I got was that left was a less experienced attempt at conveying the designs before the right got the aesthetic down.

Eh, I wonder if it's all that bad, i bet sure artists are used to "make this thing but modernize it" requests. Also, got a feeling anons will disagree, but i think they did a stellar job on that. You can clearly see that style is nearly the same, without side-by-side comparison you'd only notice clear feel differences in a small handful of characters like Yuko or Fuuka, but at the same time everything's shiny and new, feels very right. Akihiko and Koromaru looked sharper in a good way, I'd take old Chihiro and old Tanaka too, but those two I'll leave down to preferences, I'm kinda conflicted how hard they babyfaced Yuko but her old version looked insanely meh so I don't think I mind.

I have very, very few gripes with it.
I miss using all weapon types (specifically fists). There's a lot less fusion spells, too. Also the dorm is too bright like others said. The tonal shift and desaturation was a step in the right direction, but like everyone's noticed, there's a distinct lack of shadows in the dorm even then.
The Tziah block is too green when it's supposed to be gold.
And... I think that's it? If I had to really, really stretch it I noticed they changed a couple of Nyx Avatar's phase change lines to be awkwardly paced, but it was still good.
I've played P3FES about 3-4 times and Reload only once so far, but I'll do another playthrough in the coming months. Still gotta make that ultimate Pixie.

I really love art and designs in P2 tbh. It has this really surreal and unique aesthetic that came from Soejima and Kaneko combining their styles together
They get some aspects right (like the portraits), but they ruin a lot of a aspects subtlety. The music for example - the new one isn't bad, but when compared to the original it sounds messy and isn't as clean. Another is the aesthetics - the dorm looks far worse and other environments like the mall or the beach that lacks the detail and color of the original. This is combined with smaller issues like the removal of weapon choices, removal of certain personas, certain aesthetic downgrades, MC not keeping his hands in his pockets etc..
Overall it's a good remake for people who have never played FES, but if you have it's hard to say the remake is the definitive version. If they had just kept the original soundtrack and weapon choices it would honestly make it the definitive version of P3 (assuming FES comes back).
While this sounds like nitpicks, FES is my favorite game and they got the easy stuff right, though fumbled the details.
I think of it this way. The missing details are replaced with new ones that charmed me, so I can’t really hate it. FES is always on my shelf too. It’s not like it disappeared after 2/2. And it’s different enough that I’m sure new fans will still probably check it out. Hell, P3P was my introduction and it made me wanna play FES.
P3fes was my first persona/smt anything and it was my favorite game ever since. The remake was amazing, even the new dub voices grew on me after a while. I won't pretend it's perfect, but to demand perfection isn't realistic to begin with, and they got almost everything important done right.
I do wish they tried a little harder on Thanatos's awakening, though. That shit was shocking the first time I saw it on ps2.

The cutscene direction is completely fricked in reload. The prologue is another great example.

I could see her going both ways. She’s shown to be quite naive and silly, but will also wax philosophical. You could probably nitpick the original game in the same way and break down what she should or shouldn’t know, or what she would or wouldn’t say. There’s nothing wrong with criticizing new writers that didn’t work on the original, but I think they were super conservative with what they added, and seemed to care about the characters being themselves. A little joke here and there is fine. It’s not like Persona Q.

I hated being pigeon-holed to fricking slash attacks when swapping weapon types was a great way to early game hit physical attack types when you didn't have access to all the Persona phys types.
Reload. There are some visual aspects or little details from FES that are lost in translation, but just about everything else is better in the remake. The extra content really does add up too in adding to the game's investment. It may not be perfect, but it succeeded in translating the heart of Persona 3 into a modern release.
I will say the music is very subjective since it's certainly a different direction. I enjoy the new music myself minus a couple songs (Strega's theme is very off for example). Thankfully, if you're on PC you should be able to dig up mods if the original soundtrack suits your fancy better.

I've been emulating fes for the past couple weeks but just recently got reload. I feel like i should've just started with reload to begin with, its a fricking great remake.

its strange considering that it was made completely by interns. SMTVV is listed as 60 dollars and that game has an additional route thats almost completely different from the base route.
Some upgrades(Jin for most improved), several downgrades(Akinari for most degraded) and a bunch of side-grades(most shopkeepers). Though if the lighting creating the bluish hues on most characters was by design to give them a pale sickly almost deathly appearance, then reload did the artstyle a disservice

What does Koromaru do to achieve that? Is he just such a good boy that he can summon Cerberus more easily than the others?

I don't think the new portraits are bad themselves but when placed next to the original portraits then you can see more variation with head angles, expression, and oomph/relaxation in body gesture in the originals.
Reload is a side grade. There are some upsides, but also downsides. If I had to tell someone to play, I think I'd recommend Reload because of how accessible it is, but if you want, you really can't go wrong with either version. It's fricking sucks that Atlus didn't make a definitive version, but at least it's a good substitution unlike Portable. Anyone who recommends Portable over FES or Reload should be dragged into the streets and stones to death.

I think they're overall equal but different. However the types of changes made to Reload make me worried the team is too stuck in its ways. Persona is unlikely to shake ups its formula so it'll need to come at things from a different angle. Brightening up and adding more silly content to the moodier of the modern games feels like they can't. Either unwilling or simply don't see that aspect.
I was feeling a bit discouraged to give reload a shot because all of those flashy teenage gaming p5-esque menus felt very out of the place for depression persona 3 theme, but man was I wrong. Reload is a properly high-effort take on remaking the game, things fit together, even new music is great aside of one or three frickups. There's lots of new little dialogues and things to do, gameplay improvements are very much welcome, game feels great. The only good reason to play fes would be either wanting to check out the classic you've never seen before or nostalgia boners, the only good reason to play p3p would be femc, otherwise reload is a very solid choice

I have bought a denuvo game recently, and I'm still mad about it. I played the shit out of a pirated version of Anno 1800 but eventually I wanted mods, and they didn't work with the pirate copy no matter what I did.
So I bought the game. Now it runs worse than before (same settings), I have to approve the "administrator permissions" pop-up 3 or 4 times every time I start it (letting spyware scan my files and run on my computer) and deal with THREE different launchers (steam, ubisoft, and then Anno). All in all, paying for the game made it SIGNIFICANTLY worse and shittier to play, but hey, at least I can use mods now.
It's about as good as a remake will ever be, short of just porting the art directly. There's no pleasing everyone, either you stay so close to the original that you're running in place or you make enough changes to justify the project and autists will be mad at you

I swear there's an ideal of a person's artistic growth where the flaws only help accent their work, for how amateur the FES portraits look compared to the reload ones there's this grungy energy to them like JSR or Gantz that fits better with P3's urban fantasy schtick. Modern Soejima looks too samey, especially with the 3/4 high-angle shit everyone but Takaya got re-posed to.

soejima doesn't even do portraits anymore, he just does key character art and concept art, all portraits are made by nameless interns, persona team is that full of themselves by now
This is pretty much it. Yeah, some characters look less derpy, and everything is rendered really well, but it’s missing the raw, in the moment feeling of the old art that made it what it was. I wouldn’t even say the new ones are soulless or anything. Azusa Shimada was a great pick for the artist and I want to see what she does with P6, but you can’t replace the original look.
Those were quite literally my feelings about Reload's opening. It's clearer, had bigger budget, more energetic and as a whole provided a completely different vibe to the original. But after watching it I had no idea what the imagery was conveying beyond story spoilers or quick character introductions.
It is in no way bad, but it lacks the message of death the original had. And if I had no proper context of the original I wouldn't have understood anything about the new opening at all.
Hearing this on the roof with Aigis is the best part of the remake. The school rooftop was always dreamy and surreal with the pink sky, and it’s one of the environments the remake did perfect. And this is by far the best rearranged song in the game.
i like reload but it absolutely is going to frick up anyones first experience of p3. you need to have played FES in complete focus and immersion in its entirety to understand why its the best persona hands down, and one of the best jrpg's ever. reload is a nice bonus afterwards.

Portraits in the remake are too standardized, they lack the variety of poses, reminds me of the jump from P3 to P4 portraits that was largely disliked for the same reason. Locations outside of Tartarus in the remake also look really jarring next to the improved character models whereas everything looked like they belonged to the same game in the original. Really 90% of effort in the remake went towards Tartarus improvements so if that's all you care about then go ahead and play the remake like the rest of the troglodytes.
I hate how much of a slog the Tartarus is in Reload. Like, you find a Monad door: go to the door, cutscene of MC opening the door, you're in, run towards the enemy, ally gives you a warning, say yes I'm ready, cutscene, one line of dialog and finally the combat start. Combat ends, run towards the chests, open them, looks like we've opened them all, tp to the entrance, open the door, cutscene, outside of Monad, cutscene, popup, and done.
Other example: there's a chest/gold hand on the floor: cutscene showing it, then you're told again that there's something on this floor....
Like, a third of this game is spend on repeating the same shit over and over again. I hate modern games wanting to over explain shit.

Here we go again, I really need a pasta prepared for this.
No party controls just like teammates being unavailable for tartarus and getting fatigued (and you getting tired after tartarus) was a design decision to make your party feel more like real people rather than NPC's you have total control over. This was said by one of the people in the dev team. So it has a thematic reason.
And in terms of gameplay, Fatigue was used to stop you from grinding forever. No party controls is an aquired taste I don't expect a P5gay to understand, it's more immersive and fun not like the tactics menu filtered me or anything. Custom weapons and Fusion spells are something P5 didn't have so removing them shows how much respect the nu-devs had for the best persona game.

I didn't feel strongly one way or another tbh. I kinda got used to it a few hours in and outside of a few situations like Mitsuru using Marin Karin for no reason (of which I instantly changed her AI and deleted the skill) it was business as usual.

Shift doesn't instantly end every fight anymore than swapping personal does. 1 shot boss nukes don't exist on anything above easy. Fuuka sp restore is nice when it happens but unless you are save scumming or something you will see it maybe 3 or 4 times an entire playthrough.

I was hating on Reload up until release until I tried it on Goypass and had a lot of fun with it. Game feels frontloaded with shit that's terrible compared to the original like a lot of the cutscenes in the first hour until you get to Tartarus and see the devs actually cared.
what's funny is you can actually do something like this to an even worse extent in the original and portable with the split-up feature.
if the MC just stands in place and you use split-up, shadows won't spawn at all on the floor and the other party members will just find the stairs for you.
a conscious style choice, less clutter, also looks unique and eye-catching as far as i'm concerned. you might not like it personally, but if you think they half-assed it because making five different little dance animations was too hard on their time constraints or budget, think again

The new art is a 50/50 as some things look better but others look worse. However the presentation in the new game just blows the original out of the water. The post-battle animations such as Mitsuru flicking her hair look gorgeous and even the regular 3D models emote much more than the original such as Yukari doing that cute maid pose when pointing to something. It's actually hard to go back to FES now since Reload is just OOZING style.
These threads usually have a point, because the older artstyles tend to be more unique. In this case, the unique artstyle is only unique because it's complete trash.
The reason Tziah is green is because the made the weird decision to have it exposed to the outside. In the original game, Tziah was completely closed off, same as the rest of Tartarus, so no outside light could enter it. In Reload, areas that are open to the outside have a green tint.

Making a homogenous endgame guy you should use is cringe, even pokemon autists understand this and usually don't use legendaries.

They raised its level because otherwise Thanatos starts to lose steam by around the final part of Tartarus. Protagonist's Personas level up at a slower rate than the party.
Any way to make NG+ fun? Wish they let you choose what to carry over. I only really wanted the compendium, perhaps even have the summoning feature locked until I reach the required level.

I love this game, but is any video game worth $70? No fricking way, if you ask me. I'm only playing it this close to release because I found a key for the PC/Xbox version for $50.
Parts of the game look like this would have been a budget release a couple of years ago, in all honesty, like a $49.99 release or something, but the game is still very good. I've been playing with the Japanese dub the entire time, so I can't speak for the quality of the English dub. I've heard mixed opinions about it.

I'm not. Stand directly below one of the ceiling lights and look very closely at where there should be shadows. The shadows are there, they're just so light that you can't see them most of the time. I have no idea why they did it this way, but shadows do technically exist. It just doesn't matter because you generally can't fricking see them.
The remake feels like it was done by indians. It's newer and shinier but it completely misses the tone and the atmosphere of the original, as if they never knew it was there to begin with.

I have very, very few gripes with it.
I miss using all weapon types (specifically fists). There's a lot less fusion spells, too. Also the dorm is too bright like others said. The tonal shift and desaturation was a step in the right direction, but like everyone's noticed, there's a distinct lack of shadows in the dorm even then.
The Tziah block is too green when it's supposed to be gold.
And... I think that's it? If I had to really, really stretch it I noticed they changed a couple of Nyx Avatar's phase change lines to be awkwardly paced, but it was still good.
I've played P3FES about 3-4 times and Reload only once so far, but I'll do another playthrough in the coming months. Still gotta make that ultimate Pixie.

They get some aspects right (like the portraits), but they ruin a lot of a aspects subtlety. The music for example - the new one isn't bad, but when compared to the original it sounds messy and isn't as clean. Another is the aesthetics - the dorm looks far worse and other environments like the mall or the beach that lacks the detail and color of the original. This is combined with smaller issues like the removal of weapon choices, removal of certain personas, certain aesthetic downgrades, MC not keeping his hands in his pockets etc..
Overall it's a good remake for people who have never played FES, but if you have it's hard to say the remake is the definitive version. If they had just kept the original soundtrack and weapon choices it would honestly make it the definitive version of P3 (assuming FES comes back).
While this sounds like nitpicks, FES is my favorite game and they got the easy stuff right, though fumbled the details.
I think of it this way. The missing details are replaced with new ones that charmed me, so I can’t really hate it. FES is always on my shelf too. It’s not like it disappeared after 2/2. And it’s different enough that I’m sure new fans will still probably check it out. Hell, P3P was my introduction and it made me wanna play FES.
P3fes was my first persona/smt anything and it was my favorite game ever since. The remake was amazing, even the new dub voices grew on me after a while. I won't pretend it's perfect, but to demand perfection isn't realistic to begin with, and they got almost everything important done right.
I do wish they tried a little harder on Thanatos's awakening, though. That shit was shocking the first time I saw it on ps2.
Watching the old awakening on youtube should be mandatory for all remake players.

I hated being pigeon-holed to fricking slash attacks when swapping weapon types was a great way to early game hit physical attack types when you didn't have access to all the Persona phys types.
As a game? FES. I like the new portraits though.
Reload. There are some visual aspects or little details from FES that are lost in translation, but just about everything else is better in the remake. The extra content really does add up too in adding to the game's investment. It may not be perfect, but it succeeded in translating the heart of Persona 3 into a modern release.
I will say the music is very subjective since it's certainly a different direction. I enjoy the new music myself minus a couple songs (Strega's theme is very off for example). Thankfully, if you're on PC you should be able to dig up mods if the original soundtrack suits your fancy better.
Definitely reload, for every 1 thing it doesn't do right, it adds 10 more better things.

I don't think the new portraits are bad themselves but when placed next to the original portraits then you can see more variation with head angles, expression, and oomph/relaxation in body gesture in the originals.
Reload is a side grade. There are some upsides, but also downsides. If I had to tell someone to play, I think I'd recommend Reload because of how accessible it is, but if you want, you really can't go wrong with either version. It's fricking sucks that Atlus didn't make a definitive version, but at least it's a good substitution unlike Portable. Anyone who recommends Portable over FES or Reload should be dragged into the streets and stones to death.

I think they're overall equal but different. However the types of changes made to Reload make me worried the team is too stuck in its ways. Persona is unlikely to shake ups its formula so it'll need to come at things from a different angle. Brightening up and adding more silly content to the moodier of the modern games feels like they can't. Either unwilling or simply don't see that aspect.
I was feeling a bit discouraged to give reload a shot because all of those flashy teenage gaming p5-esque menus felt very out of the place for depression persona 3 theme, but man was I wrong. Reload is a properly high-effort take on remaking the game, things fit together, even new music is great aside of one or three frickups. There's lots of new little dialogues and things to do, gameplay improvements are very much welcome, game feels great. The only good reason to play fes would be either wanting to check out the classic you've never seen before or nostalgia boners, the only good reason to play p3p would be femc, otherwise reload is a very solid choice

I have bought a denuvo game recently, and I'm still mad about it. I played the shit out of a pirated version of Anno 1800 but eventually I wanted mods, and they didn't work with the pirate copy no matter what I did.
So I bought the game. Now it runs worse than before (same settings), I have to approve the "administrator permissions" pop-up 3 or 4 times every time I start it (letting spyware scan my files and run on my computer) and deal with THREE different launchers (steam, ubisoft, and then Anno). All in all, paying for the game made it SIGNIFICANTLY worse and shittier to play, but hey, at least I can use mods now.

I swear there's an ideal of a person's artistic growth where the flaws only help accent their work, for how amateur the FES portraits look compared to the reload ones there's this grungy energy to them like JSR or Gantz that fits better with P3's urban fantasy schtick. Modern Soejima looks too samey, especially with the 3/4 high-angle shit everyone but Takaya got re-posed to.
Post-P5 Soejima has this plastic-y look to his characters that I think drags him down a lot. Even though I think P3 is the better game overall vanilla P4 definitely is where he peaked, I feel.
soejima doesn't even do portraits anymore, he just does key character art and concept art, all portraits are made by nameless interns, persona team is that full of themselves by now
This is pretty much it. Yeah, some characters look less derpy, and everything is rendered really well, but it’s missing the raw, in the moment feeling of the old art that made it what it was. I wouldn’t even say the new ones are soulless or anything. Azusa Shimada was a great pick for the artist and I want to see what she does with P6, but you can’t replace the original look.
Those were quite literally my feelings about Reload's opening. It's clearer, had bigger budget, more energetic and as a whole provided a completely different vibe to the original. But after watching it I had no idea what the imagery was conveying beyond story spoilers or quick character introductions.
It is in no way bad, but it lacks the message of death the original had. And if I had no proper context of the original I wouldn't have understood anything about the new opening at all.

Hearing this on the roof with Aigis is the best part of the remake. The school rooftop was always dreamy and surreal with the pink sky, and it’s one of the environments the remake did perfect. And this is by far the best rearranged song in the game.
i like reload but it absolutely is going to frick up anyones first experience of p3. you need to have played FES in complete focus and immersion in its entirety to understand why its the best persona hands down, and one of the best jrpg's ever. reload is a nice bonus afterwards.

Portraits in the remake are too standardized, they lack the variety of poses, reminds me of the jump from P3 to P4 portraits that was largely disliked for the same reason. Locations outside of Tartarus in the remake also look really jarring next to the improved character models whereas everything looked like they belonged to the same game in the original. Really 90% of effort in the remake went towards Tartarus improvements so if that's all you care about then go ahead and play the remake like the rest of the troglodytes.
I hate how much of a slog the Tartarus is in Reload. Like, you find a Monad door: go to the door, cutscene of MC opening the door, you're in, run towards the enemy, ally gives you a warning, say yes I'm ready, cutscene, one line of dialog and finally the combat start. Combat ends, run towards the chests, open them, looks like we've opened them all, tp to the entrance, open the door, cutscene, outside of Monad, cutscene, popup, and done.
Other example: there's a chest/gold hand on the floor: cutscene showing it, then you're told again that there's something on this floor....

No party controls just like teammates being unavailable for tartarus and getting fatigued (and you getting tired after tartarus) was a design decision to make your party feel more like real people rather than NPC's you have total control over. This was said by one of the people in the dev team. So it has a thematic reason.
And in terms of gameplay, Fatigue was used to stop you from grinding forever. No party controls is an aquired taste I don't expect a P5gay to understand, it's more immersive and fun not like the tactics menu filtered me or anything. Custom weapons and Fusion spells are something P5 didn't have so removing them shows how much respect the nu-devs had for the best persona game.

Like, there's no real objective critique except the price tag - the writing was faithfully ported from the original, the localization fixed a ton of errors, the gameplay is such a massive improvement it's not even funny, and all the content from FES is here with a ton of new stuff added. It has Portable’s missing persons side quest, and the skill cards that you can replicate at the shrine.

The new art is a 50/50 as some things look better but others look worse. However the presentation in the new game just blows the original out of the water. The post-battle animations such as Mitsuru flicking her hair look gorgeous and even the regular 3D models emote much more than the original such as Yukari doing that cute maid pose when pointing to something. It's actually hard to go back to FES now since Reload is just OOZING style.

The reason Tziah is green is because the made the weird decision to have it exposed to the outside. In the original game, Tziah was completely closed off, same as the rest of Tartarus, so no outside light could enter it. In Reload, areas that are open to the outside have a green tint.

I've been playing with the Japanese dub the entire time, so I can't speak for the quality of the English dub. I've heard mixed opinions about it.

The lack of natural shadows is the main issue with the dorm. Other areas don’t have this problem, so I’m not sure why the dorm is a problem. There’s no shadows under tables and behind objects.
