if you want to crack the game open, just focus on stealth. I remapped F to toggle sneaking, once you reach a certain stat threshold on both Athletics and Stealth, you start to naruto-run instead of skyrim crouching. At higher levels you can dash invisibly across the landscape at 24mph.
Very addicting game. I love playing it. I also love how diverse all the different factions and enemies are, from joke enemies like the Crab Raiders to downright horrifying stuff like the Skin Bandits.
I have Recruit Anyone but I don't use it. I find it's better to have a few really powerful units that many weak ones. One character with super high Toughness and decent combat stats can fight off a lot of the weaker raids at least.

Sure, having a station in base to slowly raise the strength of your dudes is convenient, but you miss out on breaking the game with its own systems like stuffing your guys pockets full of rocks and having them follow a caravan of merchants to raise their strength that way.

You can't completely avoid minmaxing in vanilla. Mods will let you level that shit down. Your call.
A lot of the fun comes from trying to survive horrible situations, don't worry about minmaxing.
