Last I heard, they were "disheartened" because the vast majority of players weren't making it past the first 20-30 percent of content, and all that slaving away they did to ship was just gonna be glossed over in the grand scheme of things.

I would agree with this if it meant dev times were reduced, the current state of the industry, anything less than 4 years being impossible is extremely dismal compared to the 6th gen where 2 years and change was a mostly reasonable time frame.

the funny thing about the shitty king kong game is that it isn't even the graphics that are the primary offender, it's the animations and the camera work. but of course, baby zoomers just equate everything their eyes can see as graphics these days.
-A lot of games should be shorter, they're loaded with so much meaningless filler nowadays. Give me good NG+ features or multiplayer instead.
-I already put my games on the worst settings to get the best framerate. Games stopped impressing me visually in 2007. If it means devs don't need 8 years in between releases, I'm cool with simpler graphics.
-If a dev is working overtime, they should be paid overtime.

The implication behind this is that these surface-level shortcomings would be offset by making a higher quality game within these limitations. This sentiment has proven to be bullshit 99% of the time since this meme first cropped up, however.

The amount of subhumans who think the phrase "worse graphics" refers to shit graphics (as opposed to slightly jank graphics with lower fidelity and strong overall direction) is way too high.
The reason why people want "shorter games witth worse graphics" is because this freedom could be put into experimentation and actually meaningful content as opposed to trying to get us all to jizz our briefs at the sight of somewhat more realistic water physics or something.
