If BNHA taught me anything, it's that capeshit will be shit no matter the country of origin. Still one of the most vapid and soulless shonen stories I've read, from chapter 1 it felt incoherent and was trying too hard to play it safe.
It was a pretty good premise, and Horikoshi can draw better than 90% of bestselling manga authors, but unfortunately he is also excellent at ruining whatever he makes.

You could argue that the tournament arc became stereotypical in part because of the efforts of YYH (90-94). But also Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya (85-90) and Baki (91-99) are codifiers as well.
I consider Dragon Ball to be very low on the battle shounen tier list. I put it right above Phantom Blood. Dragon Ball's power system is one step above from having no power system, in 11 years Toriyama managed to create like five important charactes, and the first third of the manga, when Goku's a kid, is actually the best part, rather than the parts everyone rips off.

I'm the anon who said YYH was mediocre, but Kurama was actually my favorite thing in the manga. That and, compared to HxH, YYH actually has a more diverse cast of characters. That sounds absurd because HxH characters are all over the place, but the gritty, brutally adult characters in YYH feel darker and more serious than the HxH ones while the cartoony, silly characters feel more light-hearted than the HxH ones. And for some reason I actually liked that.
For example, I could actually smell Chu. Characters like Chu and Goki obviously inspired characters like Basho and Uvo, but Basho and Uvo feel so much more clean or modern anime-ish. Togashi for some reason really likes these big, hairy drunkard-like characters. I feel like he was inspired by big western wrestlers like Kevin Nash and Scott Hall who are honestly just big, drunk rednecks leather with a camera on them. And I really feel that grungy 90s feel more in YYH. For a similar but not rednecky example, look at Karasu. No one in HxH feels as intimidating and otherworldly as Karasu.
But the character who struck me the most was Elder Toguro. That fricking thing gave me nightmares. It looks like Togashi photocopied a creepy goth manlet in every panel and it came out as some black blob, it's so uncanny, and of course he has body horror powers, because Togashi knew how fricking weird he looked.

This is actually a midwit take that you repeat because everyone else repeats it. The peak of DBZ is Namek. It's the part that feels the most like an adventure, its the one where tactics is actually the most used due to them being massively outscaled in terms of power and it's also Toriyama at his absolute peak in terms of art and fight choreography. Watching Vegeta have to actually maneuver his way around and outsmart Frieza's gang was great. He takes advantage of their inability to sense energy to steal the dragon balls from right under their noses and uses that same advantage to slowly pick off their forces. Not to mention you have Krillin and Gohan stealthing the whole time and tricking Vegeta to take the Dragon Balls back and just generally maneuvering cautiously because they're massively outscaled against everyone even post-Potential Unlocked. It's a constant three way struggle that keeps you engaged. Meanwhile OG DB is a short adventure to find the DBs, then tournament arc, then Goku fricking massacring the Red Ribbon army with no issues, then tournament arc after tournament arc until King Piccolo. I guess if you only watch the shitty ass, poorly paced and padded anime then Namek takes a hit in quality and feels worse though. You should do yourself a favor and read the manga sometime.

This is actually a midwit take that you repeat because everyone else repeats it. The peak of DBZ is Namek. It's the part that feels the most like an adventure, its the one where tactics is actually the most used due to them being massively outscaled in terms of power and it's also Toriyama at his absolute peak in terms of art and fight choreography. Watching Vegeta have to actually maneuver his way around and outsmart Frieza's gang was great. He takes advantage of their inability to sense energy to steal the dragon balls from right under their noses and uses that same advantage to slowly pick off their forces. Not to mention you have Krillin and Gohan stealthing the whole time and tricking Vegeta to take the Dragon Balls back and just generally maneuvering cautiously because they're massively outscaled against everyone even post-Potential Unlocked. It's a constant three way struggle that keeps you engaged. Meanwhile OG DB is a short adventure to find the DBs, then tournament arc, then Goku fricking massacring the Red Ribbon army with no issues, then tournament arc after tournament arc until King Piccolo. I guess if you only watch the shitty ass, poorly paced and padded anime then Namek takes a hit in quality and feels worse though. You should do yourself a favor and read the manga sometime.
