Whats baffling about totk is that every success and every failure makes perfect sense. If my contraption fricks up in a miserable way, I can see it unfold and I realise how dumb I was for thinking it would work. If I try something.clever, it just fricking works and I feel like a genius for it. Not many game can do this let alone on the scale of Totk.
It's ironic that BOTW's divine beasts are better than TOTK's dungeons. At least those served as "puzzle boxes" where you had several interconnected states and had to experiment with them to find a solution. Half of TOTK's dungeons are pathetic in comparison. Collections of 4 or 5 "non-puzzles" whose solution is self-evident and which are not connected to each other.
The exception, I think, is the goron dungeon, but the challenge there is more about navigating the place than solving puzzles. The desert dungeon also requires a bit of more elaborate thinking connecting the light and such, and is perhaps the only thing in the whole game that vaguely resembles a complex dungeon.

2023 was a fantastic year in gaming in spite of TOTK, not because of it.

That made the adventure aspect of the game good, and the combat not being insufferable and slow helped too. Remember how the Champions in BotW were some level of actual characters with whom Link and Zelda interacted in the old days? Remember how they formed various relationships with them, and how their dialogue after beating their respective Divine Beasts' Ganon Blights offered different insights and resolutions to their character arcs and untimely deaths (Revali being humbled and admitting Link was the superior warrior, Urbosa having eventual closure over Link slaying the villain who's been a stain on her proud Gerudo heritage, Mipha making peace with her love for love for Link being unfulfilled, and Daruk being a fricking nothingburger)? Now, this isn't exactly high-level writing, but there was discernable individuality imparted here.
And then TotK gives you four nameless and masked-up anonymous flunkies who all tell you literally the exact fricking same thing every time. Only Mineru gets to be a character and tell you something different because of course she does, she's part of Fujibayashi's new Mary Sue race after all.
To be fair, you actually interact and adventure with the TotK modern day champion, rather than being minor NPCs. They also actually fight alongside you in the final battle and defeat all their bosses instead of mildly damaging Ganon in a cutscene.

Most ultimates take 20+ seconds to recharge, and spamming them randomly instead of using elemental combos literally gives you 50% DPS
So you do in fact have to combo normal attacks, dodges, juggles and rotate between characters corectly.
It's closer to a barebones Bayo or DMC with the style swtching between characters and juggles than to nuZelda's combat.
This is generic actionslop I can get 1000x better in any other game.
Show me something interesting, like building your own custom drone army, or a tank, or setting them on fire then using the updraft to launch yourself into the air and rain bombs on them.

I would love it if those types of fights were more common in the depths and that many of the monster mining outposts were replaced with Yiga using custom mining devices we could rip parts from.

Actually I prefer to use an ice crystal to a magic staff send a blast of chilled air doen cave tunnels. All those ceiling crawllers will fall down and you can smash them. Your favourite game will never offer this much fun, creativity and player agency.

No there's not enough height but it still offers plenty of time to sneak the frozen enemies past if you'd rather not use your weapons.
TOTK is the literal textbook definition of 6/10 Ubislop were the same 5-6 things are stamped around a map 100+ times with no progression in difficulty.
And the kicker is, they had 6 years to rethink the formula or at least tweak it and it's 90% the same core structure with a new gimmick meant for the roblox audience.
What kills me is that they had an opportunity to use the master sword in a new way, but didn't consider what game tears of the kingdom should've been. >Master Sword unbreakable with base 1 damage >Fuse allows you to put anything on it, with that material being the only thing that shatters >You can still fuse other weapons together that are on average, much stronger than the master sword >Completing 4 new dungeons, allows the master sword to be powered up from attack power of 1>5>10>15>30. It's honestly stupid how the "sword of evil's bane" can be broken like a toothpick anytime Ganon feels like it. At least in Wind Waker Ganon physically couldn't destroy it, even though it had lost the ability to slay evil. It was just that well made. Now? You drop it down a staircase and it shatters like glass.

I've dropped games for various reasons over the years, but TotK is the first time I've ever dropped a game because I was bored. The gameplay is just BotW all over again but green instead of orange, the story is nowhere near interesting or compelling enough to give a shit about, the new sky/underground/cave areas are an absolute chore to navigate and of course none of the rewards are worth the effort. I fail to see how this took six years to develop, because it definitely was not worth the wait.

I feel disappointing when I see a bottomless chasm in a game like TOTK, because I can't personally create my own hellevators like I can in Terraria, because the world feels too static. Like I'm only allowed to tread a path that someone else has created.
I feel disappointing with overly choreographed and cinematic bosses like Colgera or Ganon, especially after being spoiled by fights like the Empress of Light, who keep up the old tradition of shmup bosses having a place in the industry.
It pains me knowing that devs don't trust me enough to challenge me, so most games won't even implement cooldowns or penalties on healing items, or they'll let me pause combat constantly instead of demanding that I fight and heal in real time.
There is much sorrow and regret in the idea that most game worlds aren't treated like humongous puzzles, and feel more like linear set pieces. TOTK will force me to do the tutorial no matter what sequence breaks I try to pull off, and BOTW will never let me inside the gerudo fortress no matter how I try to infiltrate it, unless I do it this one exact way. Meanwhile, I can HOIK into both the dungeon and the lihzard temple and accept the extremely harsh dangers that result from that, for rewards that could come in handy almost immediately.
I feel pity that most worlds are built on the notion of a story already existing, and you just being a passenger, instead of you being the star who writes the story yourself. If an NPC mouths off at you, you can't dunk them in lava to teach them a lesson.

That does describe TOTK. Objectively I don't want to describe it as terrible, it's just boring. Sure there's no major bugs or glitches, but the game just doesn't challenge you enough. They say it's for the thinking man, but when was the last time the game threw a hardy threat in your direction, without completely trivializing it? And then of course they compound on it by having the fans say "just don't use [every ability in the game]" or "just let yourself get it, it makes the fight much more close!". For 70 dollars, it would be very nice if the devs made a better challenge for me. Self-imposed limitations are lame.

There's nothing to see on TOTK. The only "unique" thing the game offers is building, but it's not comparable to the PC sandboxes that kids are totally used to nowadays. My 10-year-old nephew plays a game where users build fully functional submarines and ships, so to think that TOTK's "creativity" will attract attention in a world with so many sandboxes is quite naive.
The only thing that will attract views on TOTK are speedrunners breaking the game.
I'd like to think I'm of average intelligence. But I'm a bonafide savant compared to most of the morons on Ganker. The narrative is a disaster, and yes, I think this part is important. The only time I felt any "urgency" to solve a problem was with the gerudos that were under attack, it's a shame that in the end there's nothing very organic going on, they're just waiting for you to activate a quest where the primitive system of combat between NPCs and monsters is triggered. The game would have benefited greatly if it had been written with some care and wasn't just a bunch of afterthoughts and disrespect for its direct predecessor.
The narrative is just one of several of my complaints.

Yes, I think the game is OK for casual play, although I don't even think it really excels at that. Mario Odyssey is much better in this respect, as an uncompromising, open-ended diversion for casual gamers.

The poor narrative in an immersive adventure game is a major point, whether you like it or not.
I also mentioned the primitive combat system between NPCs and monsters, it's terrible even though it was used in the trailer to create hype. There are a whole bunch of quests that use this system and they suck.
Ganondorf does nothing the entire game except help Link find the items he needs to defeat him.
The memories being out of order doesn't make any sense here, it made sense in BOTW because you were recovering fragments of your own memory, but in TOTK it's just a stupid way to tell a bad story and spoil the only mystery of the whole game.
The framerate is bad and the input lag is colossal.
The vast majority of quests are too simplist.
90% of the puzzles are self-evident, so they can't really be called puzzles, you just see something, know the solution immediately, and do the legwork to complete it. But that can be said of almost all Zeldas, so let's forgive Nintendo here...
The variety of enemies is still small for such a big game.
The health recovery system has not been changed, although there are several examples of games that use a similar system, but in a much more balanced way, such as Dragon's Dogma.
Many interruptions during the action, you will be opening menus all the time.
Interaction with NPCs, objects, shops, shrines, etc. is tedious, you have to repeat the same slow procedure, read the same lines, see the same pop-ups, thousands of times during the adventure. The worst case is the giant fairies, but this will be with you throughout the game.
Etc.
Note that I didn't complain about the Koroks, I have nothing against them.

TOTK is what happens to a modern AAA single player if there isn't some controversy to keep it alive in the discussion, or updates with new content in the first few months of its life.
The Last of Us 2, for example, wouldn't have lasted a week in the discussion among enthusiasts if it hadn't been for the jokes people were making about the characters and story.
TOTK also has the aggravating factor that it doesn't have anything really deep. If you make a thread about Doom Eternal, or Sim City 4, you'll probably get two or three anons who know the mechanics in depth and will exchange some insights about the game, but what will people say about the fundamentals of TOTK's gameplay? It's a super simple game, in my opinion considerably simpler than Mario Odyssey, which is a children's game.

It still makes me a little mad that BOTW didn't have proper caves and such. They were awesome in TOTK and really added to the sense of adventure. Though as far as overworld exploration went BOTW was newer and fresher while in TOTK you know the map well and the vehicles trivialize it before too long.
Nintendo is iterating with the nu-zeldas. Each adds a huge layer of complexity and depth, a total overhaul of the stale game mechanics and open world formula we've been brainwashed into thinking "just the way things are" as graphics get better but games get weaker and less interactive.
BotW was amazing but people wanted MORE (that's a good sign). Then TotK comes out and not only revolutionizes how you interact with the world and its elements, but ALSO has so much of that MORE adventure that people wanted in BotW.

Whats baffling about totk is that every success and every failure makes perfect sense. If my contraption fricks up in a miserable way, I can see it unfold and I realise how dumb I was for thinking it would work. Only the wind temple boss and ganondorf really. Dungeons were cool aesthetically but still meh in terms of actual design.
It's ironic that BOTW's divine beasts are better than TOTK's dungeons. At least those served as "puzzle boxes" where you had several interconnected states and had to experiment with them to find a solution. Half of TOTK's dungeons are pathetic in comparison. Collections of 4 or 5 "non-puzzles" whose solution is self-evident and which are not connected to each other.
The exception, I think, is the goron dungeon, but the challenge there is more about navigating the place than solving puzzles. The desert dungeon also requires a bit of more elaborate thinking connecting the light and such, and is perhaps the only thing in the whole game that vaguely resembles a complex dungeon.

Now, this isn't exactly high-level writing, but there was discernable individuality imparted here.

To be fair, you actually interact and adventure with the TotK modern day champion, rather than being minor NPCs. They also actually fight alongside you in the final battle and defeat all their bosses instead of mildly damaging Ganon in a cutscene.

Most ultimates take 20+ seconds to recharge, and spamming them randomly instead of using elemental combos literally gives you 50% DPS
So you do in fact have to combo normal attacks, dodges, juggles and rotate between characters corectly.
It's closer to a barebones Bayo or DMC with the style swtching between characters and juggles than to nuZelda's combat.

I would love it if those types of fights were more common in the depths and that many of the monster mining outposts were replaced with Yiga using custom mining devices we could rip parts from.

Actually I prefer to use an ice crystal to a magic staff send a blast of chilled air doen cave tunnels. All those ceiling crawllers will fall down and you can smash them. Your favourite game will never offer this much fun, creativity and player agency.

No there's not enough height but it still offers plenty of time to sneak the frozen enemies past if you'd rather not use your weapons.
You can see the button presses in the on screen UI, he dodged 5 times, did 8 normal attacks and 3 strong attacks and 1 ult.

Okay so this topic isn't going to have good faith discussion, got it.
I've dropped games for various reasons over the years, but TotK is the first time I've ever dropped a game because I was bored. The gameplay is just BotW all over again but green instead of orange, the story is nowhere near interesting or compelling enough to give a shit about, the new sky/underground/cave areas are an absolute chore to navigate and of course none of the rewards are worth the effort. I fail to see how this took six years to develop, because it definitely was not worth the wait.
That does describe TOTK. Objectively I don't want to describe it as terrible, it's just boring. Sure there's no major bugs or glitches, but the game just doesn't challenge you enough. They say it's for the thinking man, but when was the last time the game threw a hardy threat in your direction, without completely trivializing it? And then of course they compound on it by having the fans say "just don't use [every ability in the game]" or "just let yourself get it, it makes the fight much more close!". For 70 dollars, it would be very nice if the devs made a better challenge for me. Self-imposed limitations are lame.

I feel disappointing with overly choreographed and cinematic bosses like Colgera or Ganon, especially after being spoiled by fights like the Empress of Light, who keep up the old tradition of shmup bosses having a place in the industry.
It pains me knowing that devs don't trust me enough to challenge me, so most games won't even implement cooldowns or penalties on healing items, or they'll let me pause combat constantly instead of demanding that I fight and heal in real time.
There is much sorrow and regret in the idea that most game worlds aren't treated like humongous puzzles, and feel more like linear set pieces. TOTK will force me to do the tutorial no matter what sequence breaks I try to pull off, and BOTW will never let me inside the gerudo fortress no matter how I try to infiltrate it, unless I do it this one exact way. Meanwhile, I can HOIK into both the dungeon and the lihzard temple and accept the extremely harsh dangers that result from that, for rewards that could come in handy almost immediately.
I feel pity that most worlds are built on the notion of a story already existing, and you just being a passenger, instead of you being the star who writes the story yourself. If an NPC mouths off at you, you can't dunk them in lava to teach them a lesson.

There's nothing to see on TOTK. The only "unique" thing the game offers is building, but it's not comparable to the PC sandboxes that kids are totally used to nowadays. My 10-year-old nephew plays a game where users build fully functional submarines and ships, so to think that TOTK's "creativity" will attract attention in a world with so many sandboxes is quite naive.
The only thing that will attract views on TOTK are speedrunners breaking the game.

Anon, I liked TOTK, I played it for 150 hours, but you can't deny that Nintendo made some questionable decisions. The game isn't very good in many ways either.
I totally understand people's frustration, I myself was pretty burnt out after 150 hours and felt a bit of remorse for having spent so much time on the game.
I think the criticism is fair, in fact, people aren't even really criticizing the game as heavily as it deserves here. The fans' defense is pathetic too, which shows that there really isn't much to defend.

The narrative is a disaster, and yes, I think this part is important. The only time I felt any "urgency" to solve a problem was with the gerudos that were under attack, it's a shame that in the end there's nothing very organic going on, they're just waiting for you to activate a quest where the primitive system of combat between NPCs and monsters is triggered. The game would have benefited greatly if it had been written with some care and wasn't just a bunch of afterthoughts and disrespect for its direct predecessor.
The narrative is just one of several of my complaints.
Yes, I think the game is OK for casual play, although I don't even think it really excels at that. Mario Odyssey is much better in this respect, as an uncompromising, open-ended diversion for casual gamers.
I also have a suspicion that less than 5% of total players have finished TOTK.

The memories being out of order doesn't make any sense here, it made sense in BOTW because you were recovering fragments of your own memory, but in TOTK it's just a stupid way to tell a bad story and spoil the only mystery of the whole game.
The framerate is bad and the input lag is colossal.
The vast majority of quests are too simplist.
90% of the puzzles are self-evident, so they can't really be called puzzles, you just see something, know the solution immediately, and do the legwork to complete it. But that can be said of almost all Zeldas, so let's forgive Nintendo here...
The variety of enemies is still small for such a big game.
The health recovery system has not been changed, although there are several examples of games that use a similar system, but in a much more balanced way, such as Dragon's Dogma.
Many interruptions during the action, you will be opening menus all the time.
Interaction with NPCs, objects, shops, shrines, etc. is tedious, you have to repeat the same slow procedure, read the same lines, see the same pop-ups, thousands of times during the adventure. The worst case is the giant fairies, but this will be with you throughout the game.
Etc.
Note that I didn't complain about the Koroks, I have nothing against them.

TOTK is what happens to a modern AAA single player if there isn't some controversy to keep it alive in the discussion, or updates with new content in the first few months of its life.
The Last of Us 2, for example, wouldn't have lasted a week in the discussion among enthusiasts if it hadn't been for the jokes people were making about the characters and story.
TOTK also has the aggravating factor that it doesn't have anything really deep. If you make a thread about Doom Eternal, or Sim City 4, you'll probably get two or three anons who know the mechanics in depth and will exchange some insights about the game, but what will people say about the fundamentals of TOTK's gameplay? It's a super simple game, in my opinion considerably simpler than Mario Odyssey, which is a children's game.

They wasted 6 years making a BotW rehash with a Nuts and Bolts building mechanic no fan wanted. Zelda is about adventure, not playing with fricking lego.

It still makes me a little mad that BOTW didn't have proper caves and such. They were awesome in TOTK and really added to the sense of adventure. Though as far as overworld exploration went BOTW was newer and fresher while in TOTK you know the map well and the vehicles trivialize it before too long.
Nintendo is iterating with the nu-zeldas. Each adds a huge layer of complexity and depth, a total overhaul of the stale game mechanics and open world formula we've been brainwashed into thinking "just the way things are" as graphics get better but games get weaker and less interactive.
BotW was amazing but people wanted MORE (that's a good sign). Then TotK comes out and not only revolutionizes how you interact with the world and its elements, but ALSO has so much of that MORE adventure that people wanted in BotW.
This nu-zelda shit itself is a journey. I loved BotW, TotK blew me away just as hard, and I am thrilled to see what they do with the third entry whenever it comes out.
