Sekiro is the most polished and focused soulslike from fromsoft. I don't think it is as good as darksouls and bloodborne (which you can see in their impact as a whole) but it is a top tier game.

Look, Demons Souls has atmosphere in spades and laid the groundwork for the rest of the series but the gameplay is not great. It's full of gimmick bosses, there's a bunch of frustrating stages, the black/white tendency is a cool idea but at best ignorable and at worst frustrating, etc. It's still a good game, I appreciate what it's done, but objectively it's one of the weaker entries now that we've seen where the series can go.

Greatxes, great hammers and ultra greatswords have hyperarmor. Ultras swords in DeS are the best they have ever been, and you can pancake certain enemies and npcs over and over or knock them off cliffs. I am here to discuss The Last Hero of Nostalgia, a parody Soulslike I have recently began playing that is surprisingly competent through several aspects regarding combat, exploration, and vague hints of lore. Mostly, it keeps the horizontal/vertical-ity present in early Souls titles where you could see huge swathes of a level and other parts of a level in the distance, or from above/below.

Demon's Souls still had great level design with interconnected levels and realistic shortcuts, it was just a hub and spoke design, rather than trying to shoehorn it into one giant bloated metroidvania bullshit where you have to remember the exact layout of the entire game and run for 10 minutes straight just to reach a blacksmith.
Having a shortcut in separate disconnected level u have to tp to from the main hub is not "interconnected level design"
Nostalgaia has been very DeS-inspired. So far the linear progression has been 1-1 -> 2-1 -> 2-2, with a LOT of shortcuts to open up and new pathways to navigate. It's probably my biggest draw to the game.
The most impressive thing was when you looked out of a random window and saw the End of Time from Chrono Trigger, thought "u-hu..., that's a pretty amusing easter egg..." and then hours later it turned out to be an actual, full-fledged level.

The way they handled the lore in the game was honestly brilliant but I doubt you could do the remembering mechanic in a project with a bigger scale.
The only two major issues I had with the game were how the hit detection was pretty damn iffy and occasionally my weapon would even go straight through an enemy and the level design had a lot of nooks, holes, etc. that you could get trapped in and essentially hardlock your game unless you have a not-homeway bone. Don't have one? You're essentially fricked since the game has no free reusable "have a nice day" item, afaik.
Any major no-no spots I should look out for as I go on? I've seen a few of those bad game design comments lol I like that I still get the messages even with a pirated copy. I've barely poked my head into Festivity Row. I've met the male NPC I met in the Depths and I gave him that shield.
The ones I remember was
outside the castle in the Castlevania section where you go up the stairs and along the chapels, there are some rocks around the latter that have one or two spots where you can fall in

in the Pipelayer's nightclub, if you go up the stairs in the back to get above the private rooms there's a spot to the left of the stairs where you can't get out anymore

IIRC there are one or two small dolls that let you respec at the bonfire and you'll probably use one once you find out that the max level is just 99 and you can easily reach that before the final boss with the DLC. There's a NG+ mode on steam in beta that is supposed to remove the cap but it seems bugged to me and some other people since it still maxes out at 99..
Okay good to know. I generally play STR 2H in these games but I read an archived post where an anon mentioned that he ran some Dex dual-wield build using some weapon buff that applied a flat damage increase, and he was shredding bosses. He mentioned that he watched youtube videos of str builds taking like 4 minutes to down a boss but he was dunking them in 45s.
So I thought it would be a good idea to refund a bunch of these STR points.
Some other thing that needs to be mentioned: I remember encountering two major bugs.
In the mines there is a miniboss related to a quest but during my playthrough I killed that one on my own and when I revisited the area much later to remember an armor set the two quest NPCs were suddenly standing there doing nothing and you couldn't interact with them. The real shitshow here is that those two are required for multiple other quests so my game was essentially fricked in that regard..
The other is during the bossfight in of the DLC areas behind the forest where in the final phase the floor would collapse. None of the enemies would become targetable, slide outside the arena and may or may not die on their own. If that happens you need to reload the game but your Memory will end up being lost so spend that shit before the fight. According to the dev it's an issue with Unity itself and he can't seem to fix it.
I've already been through the first area you mentioned in the Depths and talked to the NPCs first, thankfully. I'll keep an eye out for that if I make it as far as the DLC area(s?)
I sure hope my buddy right here doesn't pull a generic bait-n-switch at the end of the game and stabs me in the frickin' back. This may be my immediate and permanent favorite Souls-like NPC.

Also, just in case you haven't noticed it yet: put a few points into Luck.
I thought it was just one of those forgettable "more points=higher chance for item drops" stats or some shit but it turned out that it unlocks more and more bonus perks like chances for critical hits, evading all damage when hit, getting a freebie not-Estus charge, etc.

Bloodborne has the advantage of good, interconnected level design (for the most part) with good gameplay that isnt the typical boring iframe rollshit. It's more engaging, therefore infinitely more replayable than Souls shit.
Sekiro doesnt have as strong level design, but the gameplay blows Souls 1-3 out the water. Even with the sole weapon playstyle!
