How much a girl's affection increases depends almost solely on how expensive what you give them is, they do have preferences for food and drinks but giving them the most expensive ones is always better anyway. There could've been more items with similar prices so you could be more efficient if you took the time to learn their favorites.
The money management could've been deeper too. There are options to spend days doing things other than visiting the club but it's never worth it as you end up making bonus money on the weekdays from increased motivation by going there to make up for what you spend, while you actually lose motivation if you spend the weekend working for extra money. The game funnels you down prioritizing one girl per playthrough and you eventually make so much passive money that you can't possibly screw up increasing her affection to the top unless you do it on purpose.
The harem route could've been a cool challenge, but the game gives you a shitton of money for it and you don't need to see the girls' events to trigger it, just have high enough affection with all by the end. It would've been great if you really had to plan the schedule out to make sure you'd be able to go on dates, birthdays and traveling with all of them.

If they elaborated more on what you can do with your life outside the visits, then it can include things like rival host clubs or just getting a GF because if you're blowing $500 a night, then at least there's more a GF can do.

Same for the rest of the post. It doesn't have to be realistic and it isn't since the hostesses gradually fall for you instead of just wanting your money anyway. As for their intent, it's the enjoyment of a host club but the girls CAN get with you (the wish fulfillment part).
The most realistic take on this is probably the Yakuza series' host club minigames. It's the same set of interactions but the protagonists never get with the hosts.

The more expensive the drink/food/gift you get, the higher the increase in affection. If you both get the 150k drink for youself and buy it for a girl, her affection goes up by an entire level at once in a single turn. You can probably juggle the girls enough to get the harem ending conditions (at least 8 out of 10 affection level with all three girls by 9/17 or 9/24) by save scumming gambling for cash, but you're meant to do it in the Rich Mode you unlock after doing all three individual route since it starts you off with 50M yen.
Truly. You don't even need to spend a lot of time with them, go on dates or visit them on their birthdays. Just flaunt your money for a few weeks, then you can skip to the end and they'll be eager to jump on your dick all at once.

Reminder that patch 1.0.1 is live both on Steam and Switch and it fixed a bug where the same underwear would display on a girl every time if you played the minigames from the Extra menu. Now it properly randomizes it so if you gifted the girls all their panties, you can see them all at your leisure. Especially easy if you go into the photo minigame while they're drunk, get them on all fours and tell them to turn around.
these were two different scenarios, but the suffocating fear i felt when the game decided to give me a crying kana immediately after i gifted her panties cannot be understated
Average, stages are at most 2 ~ 15 minutes and there's a storyline component to those 30+ stages with a sequel bait ending, and additional conversations for deploying each girl in 9 different stages (so do keep track of who's cleared what).
When it comes to the actual Vampire Survivors gameplay, 4/6 playable characters suck (Rinka is OP for the main story, you can invest solely in her and do fine), the builds aren't too varied between drone-focused (which is OP) and various other incohesive artillery, and while the metaprogression upgrade cap is level 99, you never need more than 20ish.
There's a post-game 30 minute survival challenge that doesn't use your upgrades but unlocks Kanon, who is even more OP with a passive 2x EXP/money modifier, but there's nothing to use her on.

You can't save everywhere but you can progress all written dialogue manually. Every version of the game has both English and Japanese in case you need to switch at some point.
Oh, and you can switch language at any time by bringing up the options menu. So you can quickly switch to English and then back to Japanese if there's something you don't understand. There's also a backlog for recent dialogue you can bring up.

Average, stages are at most 2 ~ 15 minutes and there's a storyline component to those 30+ stages with a sequel bait ending, and additional conversations for deploying each girl in 9 different stages (so do keep track of who's cleared what).
When it comes to the actual Vampire Survivors gameplay, 4/6 playable characters suck (Rinka is OP for the main story, you can invest solely in her and do fine), the builds aren't too varied between drone-focused (which is OP) and various other incohesive artillery, and while the metaprogression upgrade cap is level 99, you never need more than 20ish.
There's a post-game 30 minute survival challenge that doesn't use your upgrades but unlocks Kanon, who is even more OP with a passive 2x EXP/money modifier, but there's nothing to use her on.
i'm learning japanese atm but i'm not sure my knowledge is enough to play the game. can i pause it and save at any time? in case i need to look up words etc

You can't save everywhere but you can progress all written dialogue manually. Every version of the game has both English and Japanese in case you need to switch at some point.

Oh, and you can switch language at any time by bringing up the options menu. So you can quickly switch to English and then back to Japanese if there's something you don't understand. There's also a backlog for recent dialogue you can bring up.
