Smoggies are typically pretty good at comp. Freezai made it to worlds the first year he decided to try his hand at VGC, and he would've made it to Day 2 if he didn't get incredibly unlucky. Just some random Smogger decided one day to pick up VGC and became a top 500 player in the world.

And I understand that not everyone can remember every pokemon's learnset, stats, and abilities, so knowing what to counter something with can be annoying, but if you've encountered it at least once or twice you'll know. It just gets so annoying seeing the same shit over and over again and I don't like playing their shitty tiers. It's not fun. It's like spamming the same deck over and over again, just because you want to get wins in a TCG. It's fricking boring. I think it also takes away part of the way the game functions; making a team with what you like and learning how to use it or thinking of ways to cover as many corners as possible. There's tons of solutions, and I know some aren't good, but it takes away the fun of testing things yourself and making people face the unexpected.
Then bring Pokemon you like and figure out how to make use of them in higher tiers?

anti-sleep abilities are a massive opportunity cost. No sleep or your mon has weak MU vs certain sleepers and it's dead weight.
Most uses of knock-off are on physical dark-types. And if it's such a huge threat, why would people still be using hold-items? There's 7 dark-types in OU at least and 4 of them are physical. How often do you even see that? And I get in some cases, if the pokemon has a certain ability, like Annihilape having vital spirit vs. defiant, you're probably going to use defiant. But if you've got no other choice, you're probably going to pick the anti-sleep. But, I think it all boils down to 'how often do you see this?'
