Spidey ps4 just felt like it took everything that made arkham work without understanding why it worked
'Buzzword' is a buzzword
'soul' communicates the idea of passion vs lack of passion, and it's an observable, if not entirely objective, phenomenon
If you think Insomniac put as much heart into Spider Man as Rocksteady put into Arkham, I question your judgement
Honestly the only difference from an experience point of view i found was the fact that i was able to 100% the first spiderman game. To this day there is no Batman game that didn't feel like a chore to get collectables in. And this comes from somebody who at the moment farms Xenoblade 3 gems to rank 10requires 5 types of endgame materials per gem and there are 20 of them. Just to understand the scope of it. What i am trying to say is that both create an accurate atmosphere, the combat is mostly the same, the movement is mostly the same. Are we talking style here? Thats kind fo subjective
That's because in Batman you have to actually look for stuff and solve puzzles and such. In Insomniac-Man you can do like 80% of the collectibles in the first 5 hours. All you have to do is go from map marker to map marker. Most involving part of getting it to full completion is finishing the game on the highest difficulty.
>And this comes from somebody who at the moment farms Xenoblade 3 gems to rank 10requires 5 types of endgame materials per gem and there are 20 of them
I'm the opposite of you. I would not dream of 100%ing a Xenoblade game because of the sheer amount of time one has to grind in it for while with Bamham, you're going to find a lot of the collectibles by playing the game and the few that you need to hunt for are usually within a restricted area so it's not a complete pixel hunt.
Soul doesn't necessarily mean good of course. It's not just style, it's more the perception of the kind of artistic passion put into creating something, versus something heavily focus grouped and obligatory, or made mostly for money
And whether something is rough around the edges but sincere, or so streamlined and overproduced (often by 'best practice' and reference to style guides) that all the passion is ironed out
So yeah, it's something that leaves evidence and observable traces, but is also based a lot on subjective interpretation, so it's hard to come to a consensus about it
personally I think Arkham Asylum was pretty passionate, City a little less so
and Spider Man was pretty soulless, and 2 doesn't have any soul to speak of
Enjoy Xenosaga 3 though, that one looks pretty great
arkham city ruined arkham asylum by turning it into open world slop. spider-man was already open world slop, so how could the sequel realistically make a bad game even worse?

I would agree with you if the entire game flow and controls hadn't been completely and utterly butchered -just- to slap the batmobile in there for no good reason. No longer can Batman smoothly move and activate the detective mode, now it's relegated to a direction on the D-pad because L1 has been dedicated to calling the car, which means you can't use the D-pad to change items anymore while in-game without pausing, so now you gotta press down and use the right analog stick to pick a tool, and their positions change ALL the time during the early game as you get more gear so you're always looking at the ring, searching for what you want, pick that with the stick and go back to the game, completely ruining immersion, when ALL they would have to change is to swap L3 from "autocenter camera" to "call car". But no, they destroyed any sense of pacing the game could have had just to put that goddamn thing in. That in no way is good game design, because now instead of just slapping down-left on the D-pad to get the sequencer, each and every time I want to hack a panel or a drone or use the voice modulator I have to pause the game to get the thing and come back, when there's 3 whole other games that don't have this issue. >inb4 but pc
PCs can take controllers too.

Don't forget Knight's Tacticool aesthetic that the new guy favoured over the lovely BTAS aesthetic of Asylum and the early modern aesthetic of City.

I liked the tacticool aesthetic because it made sense. Bats gets shot thrice throughout the course of the game, and only survives because of his additional armor.

I don't mean the armour but the game and world as a whole. Those drones were a blight. Even the remnants of the old Asylum and City that you could see on the map clashed. Aside from the blimps, none of the zones were that memorable.
The Babsgirl DLC did a better job.

can we stop with the spiderman/arkham comparisons. The key difference is batman cameand went 10 fricking years ago and spiderman just apes knight with worse graphics and more playable Black folk. NOBODY FRICKING CARES
for reference Ive never heard anyone on or offline praise spiderman for having good boss battles. I dont even know if Spiderman HAS boss battles. I mean, I assume theres bossfights with kingpin, lizard, and doc oc, but its never been talked about
I understand the appeal of vigilante justice, but having said vigilantes wear spandex suits and fight cartoon villains with goofy superpowers makes it cross the line into being kind of moronic. I think I’d like these kinds of stories more if they were more grounded.
I never said I wanted 100% realism, just that capeshit has a tendency to cross into the realm of absurdity. Marvel is particularly bad for this now with its multiverse shit. I actually didn’t mind Marvel too much prior to the MCU.
Best capeshit stories are the ones that are self contained and only involve one, at most two, superheroes. Capeshit is as its worst when it's like the MCU. X-Men used to be in their own universe, and they were much better off that way.

I agree with you in retrospect but I still love the idea of shared worlds and continuities, crossovers etc
It just should be a special thing, not something obligatory that turns individual stories into a slave to the broader continuity
Yeah the idea is cool but the actual execution always sucks. Like how X-23 and Gwenpool immediately got ruined the second they got involved in other people's stories, for example.
Unironically, the Spiderman 2000 game did this whole crossover thing well. It has cameos from multiple other Marvel properties, but it’s still very much a Spidey game first and foremost.
They're not supposed to be silly.
Initially superheroes wore tights because they did acrobatics. Kinda like how ninjas wear pajamas.
The capes were a sign of nobility, so were the insignias.
You're supposed to take them seriously and feel awe about them. Ofc if enough time passes and too many holywood movies make fun of them as "outdated" then you too will feel that way. But you should become aware that it isn't a natural feeling. Tights are not corny and lame "by default". You learned to see them that way because old people wear softer, cottony clothes whereas younger people wear sharper clothes of advanced synthetic composites. Among many other changes, some natural others pushed for the sake of fashion money.
I think you’re forgetting the fact that the tights and suits ninjas wear tend to be dark in colour so that they can be stealthy. It’s the bright colour palette that makes them look like circus clowns. I think Batman is one of the few major superheroes to have sensible attire, and that’s because he’s basically just a ninja anyway.
Listen weeb, most ninjas wore plain gray or brown clothes because they were the only thing they could afford, being lowly peasants that they were.
And superheros are very strong they don't need to hide, why would they wear stealthy costumes?
You just lack knowledge of costumes in general. You've never seen what real kings wore throughout the ages. If I were to show you you'd laugh just like you laugh at old superheroes. The people that designed the heroes did know though, because they weren't burnt-brain zoomers who only have knowledge of the newest corpo mandated styles.
Batman wears tights because he's a nearly 7 foot tall muscular man who does acrobatics, he needs the mobility, hell even in knight they go out of their way to explain his new suit, apparently lucius made it even more lightweight than the city suit even though it looks like a fricking exoskeleton/kamen rider suit.

they're supposed to be uniforms, they're meant to mean something and invoke the iconography, heroism and philosophy of the wearer
sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't
they're not inherently silly, but as the world becomes more cynical and ready to condemn something as 'cringe' it does become harder to take seriously, by osmosis
Arkham Knight gameplay is centered around the bat-tank. They have riddler missions for the bat-tank. They killed hundreds of thousands of good mechanics to shove in the bat-tank. They listen to bat-tank engine revving. They eject themselves from their bat-tank. They dress and act like bat-tanks. They draw the entirety of their modern gameplay from the bat-tank. They post sassy webms about bat-tanks. They watch youtube reviews in worship of bat-tanks. Their biggest event of the year involves throwing parties in honor of bat-tanks pulling blocks out of walls. They use bat-tank slang like "vroom" and "skreeech". When you say "transportation" they're not thinking of the batclaw or the batglide. They're thinking of the bat-tank. Their cities are completely overrun with drone-tanks for the bat-tank to shoot. They worship their Arkham Knight militia force disproportionately filled with drone-tanks and their global militia force of soldiers filled with drone-tanks. Their men sit around watching Pimp My Tank while their women sit around watching bat-tank paint job tik toks. They worship bat-tanks like "1989 Bat-Tank" and "1960s TV Series Bat-Tank" and "2008 Tumbler Bat-Tank" and the late "Joker-Tank" while attacking the devs who actually made the games before bat-tank took over. Their cinematics are filled with bat-tank and their scoreboards are topped by bat-tank. They send the bat-tank to the Ace Chemical Factory and celebrate when the bat-tank wins because that bat-tank is a true cold steeled Arkham bat-tank. They watch bat-tank porn to a point where "BTW" does not make them think of the english abbreviation but about bat-tank winches instead. They will tell you how much they hate bat-tanks and how the zoomer's law meme is a stale joke and they are just pretending to love bat-tanks but the evidence speaks for itself in that Arkham Knight has always been and will be a game of bat-tank loving bat-tanks.
I will never forgive them for robbing us of the deathstroke fight, instead of batman frantically trying to block all of his katana swipes now it's deathstroke who's blocking all of your punches and throwing smoke bombs so he can run away like a b***h, but rocksteady gave us a shitty tank fight instead and when deathstroke ejects batman just instantly takes him down, i mean it is funny but i wanted a mock fight to show us how much stronger batman got since their first fight.
Atkham City was decent but it failed to reach the levle of quality that the first game had by making it bigger and more open for the sake of it?
Everything i have seen about Spiderman 2 just screams re-used assets, They took Peter and Miles and put the two into one game instead of having a seperate release for each. The map still looks the same.
Yeah but thats not what Arkham City is.
Arkham Asylum was a linear well curated experience while Arkham City gave us one big city to explore - which at the end just made the pacing worse while also giving us the typical open world collectable garbage. Atleast the Riddler shit in Asylum felt more natural than tagged on like in City.
>Is it also a comfy game to play during wintertime?
You'd think so but despite taking place on Christmas Eve, the game somehow manages to have absolutely no atmosphere at all.
>the game somehow manages to have absolutely no atmosphere at all.
I beg to differ. The atmosphere may not be as palpable as in Asylum or City, but it is there. And it has plenty of references to xmas, holiday cheer and such.
Regular Asylum takes place on a hot late summer night. No halloween decorations but the entire game has a vibe.
The "remaster" uses Knight's rain when you're outdoors (but doesn't remember to add it back in when you smash the skylight in the gardens, even if the glass still shows running rain, oops I guess) and makes it look a little weird. Fine if you like rain I guess.
>The "remaster"
Goof thing I own the GOTY of Asylum and City. The remaster was dogshit. Just a way to justify re-selling those games on Xbone and PS4. The original games have the artstyles intact and run flawlessly on PC.
I mean, I have an Xbone and I wanted to play the games on Xbone so I got them on sale. I wanted to see the graphical changes and the new bugs they added.
>No, it may have the aesthetics
to be fair the aesthetics are what matters most for the atmosphere. Batman is batman, you can't expect him to be in survival horror
All the Arkham games are horror games from the perspective of the monster.
Remember the Gordon first person segment in Knight? That's the life of every thug in gotham.

Arkham Origins isn't that bad. Then again, I had to restart the game three times at the first boss battle because Croc kept turning invisible. It crashed more than once to desktop for no reason. There are areas you can clearly access but Batman is blown away by cold wind. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't happen anywhere in City. There also a bunch of empty undercoated rooms like pic related scattered all over. What a mess. That being said, I do enjoy the boss fights and it's still Batman so I like it.
No, in City if you try to leave the map Bats just turns back (granted they scare him off with AA guns firing at him but that's another thing entirely)
That does remind me that I'm really angry that in Origins bats can't punch out wooden walls because of that thing in the sewers.
thats an insult to insomniac. all the batman games had this boring black and white atmosphere. everythings supposed to be le spooky and scary. it just ended up boring and depressing. meanwhile spiderman world is way bigger, way more fun to explore, way more color, better everything
Arkham Knight was pretty boring, you have the entirety of Gotham, but it feels like nothing more than a background.
Not enough big fights down in the streets, barely any side activity involving emergent crime aside from the same car chase.
It feels lifeless. Having the entire city evacuated, and in a state of emergency ruined it for me.
The Arkham games were passion projects with soul not generic crap.

both origins and knight mog both spider man games to oblivion
Knight is full of soul.
I love that the true ending filtered like 99% of players even though they clearly spelled it out through the game.
I think what filtered people is the fact that you had to collect every single Riddler trophy in the game to get it.

Let me strip away the layers and translate what you just said while hiding behind garbage buzzwords like soul
>Game i like is different than game i don't like because of my personal opinion.
There you have it. Its easier to say this and some people will agree to your sentiments. There is no need for stupid shit like "soul".
Arkham games are full of little details that don't need to be there, but are, simply because the developers loved what they were working on.

No. I don't even remember a single second of Arkham City, but I remember nearly everything from Arkham Asylum. Quality over quantity.

Miagani(the really high tech modern looking area you enter by the third act) looked really strange comparing it to the rest of Gotham.
I really only remember its name because it sticks out in the militia radio.

Meh, I can take that or leave it. I was stupid enough to buy the DLC so I had all the suits and they let you use them even on vanilla NG. What I won't forgive is how they fricked up the Beyond suit's cowl. Looks disgusting when Asylum had it spot on.
Rescuing prisoners in city was kino, now imagine divebombing a Black person thug who is harassing an old woman in the streets. Frick, they really should have made a beyond game instead of whatever the frick the suicide squad game is.
I still find it strange that Conroy is dead.
being gay takes a huge toll on your immune system
He died of ass cancer, so yeah, being gay literally killed him.
immersion and believability are important anon
They're the kind of games where you can just feel the love of the developers for the source material oozing through every polygon.
Asylum is like a batman TAS movie, iirc they even got the writer and all the VA's from the cartoon.
and that is the real reason why everyone sucks its wiener including me
need clown pussy
So do the other games. Except for Harley's VA because she retired from doing voice acting after Asylum.
arkham city had sex in it
lots of sex
can we stop with the spiderman/arkham comparisons. The key difference is batman cameand went 10 fricking years ago and spiderman just apes knight with worse graphics and more playable Black folk. NOBODY FRICKING CARES
I still think mr freeze is the best boss battle in any videogame. Having to find new ways to get to him is so unique
for reference Ive never heard anyone on or offline praise spiderman for having good boss battles. I dont even know if Spiderman HAS boss battles. I mean, I assume theres bossfights with kingpin, lizard, and doc oc, but its never been talked about
Erm, did you even fight the Shocker? That was legitness.
>‘Spider-Man 2’ for Insomniac is what ‘Arkham City’ was to Rocksteady.
Their last good game?
Can someone explain the appeal of superheroes.
I understand the appeal of vigilante justice, but having said vigilantes wear spandex suits and fight cartoon villains with goofy superpowers makes it cross the line into being kind of moronic. I think I’d like these kinds of stories more if they were more grounded.
>want it to be realistic
Please go somewhere else. Art/video games/movies/books are not for you.

It has cameos from multiple other Marvel properties, but it’s still very much a Spidey game first and foremost.
>only involve one, at most two, superheroes.
What about something like Top Ten or Astrocity?
There's more grounded heroes, but after a while they all become generic spandex wearers.
Laura is so cute!
Mythological heroes for an age where no one believes in mythology
I mean sure in a sense that's correct.
Except Spider-man 2 is woke trash.
But other than that, why not...
>implying
In terms of SOVL i'd say:
Web of Shadows = Arkham Asylum
And that's it, no spoodermen game has even come close to matching bamham city, let alone knight.
web of shadows combat frickin sucks though
i never had this happen in arkham city
ive always wanted to play as a sugar cube
>"Turn up your FOV"
Holy shit i want to play as spider cube thats sick as hell, shame thats not intentional
>white washing isn't a thi-
>Featuring Tofu from the Resident Evil series!
I got bored and never finished Arkham City. Guess I should expect the same from Spidey 2?
an inferior sequel to the original?
I will never forgive them for robbing us of the deathstroke fight, instead of batman frantically trying to block all of his katana swipes now it's deathstroke who's blocking all of your punches and throwing smoke bombs so he can run away like a b***h, but rocksteady gave us a shitty tank fight instead and when deathstroke ejects batman just instantly takes him down, i mean it is funny but i wanted a mock fight to show us how much stronger batman got since their first fight.
how embarrassing for sony
you need a sense of shame to be embarrassed
City was noticeably different from asylum
Spider-Man 2 is very much a straight up sequel
Atkham City was decent but it failed to reach the levle of quality that the first game had by making it bigger and more open for the sake of it?
Everything i have seen about Spiderman 2 just screams re-used assets, They took Peter and Miles and put the two into one game instead of having a seperate release for each. The map still looks the same.
Thats because it is the same, they just added more on top
Yeah but thats not what Arkham City is.
Arkham Asylum was a linear well curated experience while Arkham City gave us one big city to explore - which at the end just made the pacing worse while also giving us the typical open world collectable garbage. Atleast the Riddler shit in Asylum felt more natural than tagged on like in City.
Does Asylum hold up as a spooky october game?
It's been a while since I played
Not very spooky. City honestly has more horror with the Ice Pick Lounge
Wrong.
>Not very spooky
I remember the atmosphere in Asylum being pretty eerie. Not exactly horror but City felt more "action-y" in a sense.
I've yet to finish Origins and I remember it takes place around Xmas. Is it also a comfy game to play during wintertime?
>Is it also a comfy game to play during wintertime?
You'd think so but despite taking place on Christmas Eve, the game somehow manages to have absolutely no atmosphere at all.
>the game somehow manages to have absolutely no atmosphere at all.
I beg to differ. The atmosphere may not be as palpable as in Asylum or City, but it is there. And it has plenty of references to xmas, holiday cheer and such.
Yes
No, it may have the aesthetics but much like dead space it doesn't count as an horror game when the protagonist is a turbo chad.
The frick? Arkham City is the best Batman game of all time. Spiderslop 2 was already forgotten after the weekend
It's better than Arkham I'd say
A not quite as good sequel to the first game?
Spiderman vs Spiderman is closer to BOTW vs TOTK.
Except that TOTK didn't give us playable Zelda with all Zelda quests being incredibly demeaning and annoying.
you said the same with the previous homie-man homorales and nobody buy it
Arkham Origins isn't that bad.
