Giant corporations only care about the ability to scale up success and you can't do that if you treat employees like human beings instead of replaceable cogs. They need the cogs to work really really hard to be as productive as they can possibly be without any regard for their personal well-being, and once they inevitably break down they simply replace them with a fresh cog. That's why these games are reduced to assembly line products where no individual dev has any significant contribution to the project. Each unit of work is abstracted away from its creative origin so that if the cog working on it breaks mid-task it can be seamlessly picked up by a new cog who won't need to understand anything beyond the acceptance requirements for the task. Emotional investment in the finished product doesn't exist because a huge chunk of the people working on it at the end of its development weren't even part of the company when it was first thought up and have no creative input into its story or characters.

Second game was rushed but still managed to capture some soul since they used stuff from the first game, then the third was chaotic mess because they now replaced the team fully. The 4th game had some innovation because they had more money and now more ressource and the team was more experienced and not fully fricked up but they got mad at the end of development because Suits kept being c**ts, the 5th was total mess again because team was messed up again. 6th was total crash of the cycle, killing the company.

Not anymore. That was part of the over-hiring boom influenced by venture capitalist investment in silicon valley. Big tech companies hired people fresh out of college, they poached people from other companies if they showed the least bit of talent, because expanding headcount was one of the easiest ways to signal you are growing, which attracted more VCs to inject millions of dollars into the company.
This is how Twitter managed to exist for so long despite making literally no money. None. It was a money hole. Yet it employed thousands of people, hundreds of them programmers, doing basically frick all. Because hiring and "expanding" simulated growth.
When the Fed started to hike interest rates due to inflation, this meant no more interest free loans. No more free money. VCs started getting real skittish about projects that weren't paying dividends. So a lot of belt-tightening started in 2022 and it hasn't really stopped. Companies laying off the useless mouths, cancelling projects that show little promise, and big tech companies aggressively monetizing previously free services because simply attracting uses to simulate growth no longer guarantees VC money. There have been countless studies, research papers, and investment into people's psychology and trying to quantify the value of intagible assets like brand or customer loyalty, and yet video games seem to be the only industry where it's primary customer base often and loudly cheers for it's downfall. I have never seen such an insane disconnect between producer and consumer than that of modern game devs and their target audience. Not only that, but they seem to frequently hire people who loudly and repeatedly belittle, mock, and fight with people who've been fans of that company since well before they arrived; the opposite of pretty much every industry in the world except sports and music who only ever do that through rival teams and labels. Why? Like, how do they shit the bed so much, all you have to do is make a fun game and apologize if it sucks.
