They gave up because it's hard work for no payoff, turns out adjusting models that aren't compatible with the game isn't a week's worth of work (doesn't excuse GF with the budget they have of course)
All pokemon games are shovelware. They run on some of the worst spaghetti code known to man and it says a lot about the presentation and appeal of the series gimmick that it got as popular as it did.
There's a reason FireRed is the most popular ROM base. They try to hide behind "it's the most optimized code with least garbage" but the reality is it's infinitely easier to do sprite work than modeling work. (See: pixel shovelware on Steam)

I think the point is that the Pokemon are properly scaled thanks to the mod, the Gen 7/8 Pokemon are just being used since they are very big
