Pretty cool, but it removes the comfy sandbox vibe in favor of encouraging you to prioritize what's most important at the moment. This arguably makes it an objectively better design, but a lot of the point of civ games is building up your own little empire as much as you want.

This is the problem with all modern grand strategy / 4x games except Civilization.

One of reasons why is because of trying to appeal to story gays

        >story gays
Why? Are they truely the majority of the audience now, or is this similar to how some game devs attempt to appeal to women?

You would have discovered it years ago if the creators hadn't killed off all hype with bad business decisions. Yes, I will post this reminder in every thread.

It is an amazing game, but how do I remove the women being important? I am not any angry incel, it is just that I cannot bear women being able to lead troops in the classic age, being taken serious, dating Chads and ignoring me because I treat them so well. It is classic age

There you go, you can choose whether to just restrict them from being generals or restrict them from all positions. Affects the AI too, so even though restricting them gimps you, the AI is similarly gimped. Makes the game more interesting in that you're more limited on your leader pool actually.
The mod is actually made by one of the Old World devs, pretty based if you ask me.

Like any 4x, you need to improve your industrial capable cities to make units efficiently. Good cities can pump out units every 1-3 turns depending on how good the city and unit is.

governors can be a huge part of this too, especially if they're studs

Depending on what family you found a city under you can get bonuses to production too. The Greek argead family produces units several turns faster than others and with a free promotion/buff

I hated it, but my friend loves it. Luckily you can sort of tell if you're going to like it in the 2 hour refund period. Seems pretty divisive.

    So what's it like?
    Style over substance?
    jank?
Does it offer anything new to the 4x genre?
Does it address any of the issues of the 4x genre, if so which?
    Is there a gimmic?

It's a cross between the gameplay of civ and the storytelling dynamics/events of Crusader Kings or similar games. Each civ has multiple families and characters who you need to keep happy and who have different traits, can trigger missions, events, etc. I really really like it so far.

Forgot to really address your questions. Other than that neat combo of mechanics it doesn't really innovate that much. There's an orders mechanic which governs how many actions you can take per turn, there are ways to increase this which you need to do as your Empire grows larger or risk issues like not being able to move all of your units in a turn. I guess that shakes up the aspect of being able to spam doomstacks since you can't really have too large an army.
Other than this I can't think of any big improvements or changes to the 4x formula

It's civ with an increased emphasis on the iron age. There are limited city sites so war is inevitable. The scoring/win con system is better. The civs don't actually matter as much as in civ, apart from flavor. It does scouting and naval transport better than civ. Scouts have great movement and if they're in a forested tile cannot be seen unless another unit attempts to move into their tile or another scout comes within 2 tiles. Ships can anchor and then create a transport corridor across water, no need to build transports or manually load/unload units.

It's not jank at all I would say, it's put together ideally, the only major flaw is the limited scope. I'd really like them to add dlc or an expack with asian civs or another time period.

If you like Civ 5 and early game civ in general but would like more detail and options it's great.

Too bad little zoom, the time of the hexagon is upon us and there is no escape. You missed out on square times.
