The best sports games have always leaned more into the dumb arcade stuff. NFL Blitz, Tecmo Super Bowl, Powerpros series, NBA JAM, etc. These ones are the ones that are often considered timeless for a reason. There is room for the more simulation based sports games too, but lately I just cant stand how the modern sports games are. I luv me sports and all of them just feel like hogs piss
I love sports sims and arcade sports, but sports sims as of late have become some of the biggest cancer in the industry. The reason so few here know about it is because there are so few of us who like sports sims. Make no mistake, though, NBA 2K is absolute cancer. Only play the franchise modes and never buy it until it's under $10.
I havent really enjoyed a madden game since PS3, so I stopped buying them after 2013. I didnt even bother with NBA 2k because it just LOOKED like hogpiss

Madden 08 on PC has a shit ton of mods to make it align with current day teams and rosters. Don't think they can add more games to the schedule, though. Hell, Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES still gets current day teams and roster updates. Those are fun.
Yeah I never buy them new. I follow the NFL a fair bit and know the players but I never felt the need to play a current roster, and online was still active enough for the older games
NBA 2001 doesn't have DLC or microtransactions or gacha mechanics so yes it is objectively better game
