I don't think I really care as much about games having attractive characters as I do games having ugly characters that are trying to be shilled to me as attractive characters. A game can have objectively ugly or objectively attractive characters and I'm fine, but when an ugly character is presented to me as some type of beauty standard or something, I immediately lose interest. It's why I can't be bothered with the Horizon games.

I wouldn’t say it’s “important,” but then being beautiful definitely makes them more memorable and can strongly impact the player’s motivation and investment in the story. Prey (2017) had nothing but ugly ass people aboard the Talos I. Sure, that’s not unrealistic given than it’s a space station full of top-tier scientists in their given fields and security personnel, but unfortunately them all being ugly as sin doesn’t really give the player any compelling reason to give a single shit about them.
Ugly people do not inspire motivation in a person/player without prior emotional investment. Making them beautiful is the better choice.
