From what I’ve gathered Ash is more liked in Japan than he is in the US. As for the anime itself even the mostly agreed worst season of the anime (gen 5) still got higher ratings than Pokemon Origins which was jerked off ton by the western fanbase.

I dropped the anime after Charizard blew the Indigo League despite all Ash had done for him. The only time I've been legitimately angry and full of hate towards a fictional character.
