However the game dev industry was created in Quebec mostly thanks to ubisoft. The Quebec government really liked the idea of tech&computers, and supported the frick out of it. Well in comes this french company that wanted to set up shop in Quebec. The government went frick yeah sure. They set up shop in a part of town that was kinda run down, while it was hipsterville. There was a frick ton of old dead factories.
Education is cheap in Quebec and rather good, so you had all these people start working at ubisoft. It grew and became a rather well known name. They did a lot ports and shoveware in the late 90's early 00's. But the montreal studio started pumping out good games and IP's. Other studios were created mostly indie. But then all these AAA and AA companies took noticed of holy frick here is this amazing work force of educated people. Well the Canadian dollar is cheaper then the USD and the Quebec government is totally down with giving 2$ for every 1$ invested.
From 2000-2012 the field went from 100ish people to like over 20k Every large studio had massive companies in montreal. Honestly its an amazing story when you read into it. Outside of Quebec for gamedev work tho, its moronic as frick horridly funded corrupt as frick people lying and taking advantage of Canadian grants and etc.
Montreal grew to have this amazing strong tech sector hardware,software,servers&IT out of the ass. If I remember correctly technically this started in the 80's the commador and Atari 2600 where made here or maybe it was just the game carts. But yeah it was ubisoft that made shit blow up. There is over 20 AAA-AA studios here.
Education wise you have shit from 8 months to 5 years and its free the field is highly competitive.
