This was during the beginning of this culture war we are still stuck in, where many gaming journalists were intentionally trying to make gaming "more serious" by basically praising things that were like films and books while shitting on things that gamers want for being "game-y." Everything standard in gaming was deemed bad or in need of "updating."
I remember when Adam Sessler praised that black woman npc singing Fortunate Son in Bioshock Infinite as one of the most powerful moments in all of gaming. Sess is probably the one that fell off the hardest and he did it in sync with the general decline of the industry.
