One of my favorite games of all time. Never got a (proper, good) sequel. Is there even a retrobait indie game that apes it? I loved the village and the power sucking from enemies.

would be obvious for square to remake and make sequels. A proper HD version of their PS1 era games as a start. Then a full remake/reboot.
BF Musashi was ahead of it's time. I remember thinking why other games that time period didn't have food aging mechanics or internal game clocks.
Truly! It gets written off as a sony Zelda-clone but its much more ambitious than all that. The story was lovable too, though I'm sure the localization is nowhere near accurate lol
The localization is semi-accurate.
They changed some names of the Thirstquencher Empire which were references to alcohol.
In japanese version was Scribe Shanky also effeminate/gay? Or was it added on purpose in western release? I've seen a bit of early cutscenes of japanese version of the game where he introduces Musashi to Library books and whatnot, and didn't hear any of that homosexual accent from English version.
Please don't do this to this thread
He's asking a genuine question about the localization, put your gun away.
Indeed it is genuine, PS1 Musashi was one of my most cherished video games in my youth. Got it from my uncle as a birthday gift among some other pretty good titles from Squaresoft.
He got me Xenogears and Ehrgeiz too.
As a child those homosexual jokes flew completely over my head, as I was focused on exploration and experimenting with stolen enemy abilities. Now I'm curious, was the localization team trying to put those things in on purpose, or was it in the original. Which so far at least I could not confirm. Japanese Shanky was simply polite and not trying to groom underaged warrior hero from another dimension.
Also one more question, I distinctly remember that when I played during childhood, I managed somehow to get Rootrick to fall down in Twinpeak Mountain climbing race, before getting on top of the ledge (those moving platforms pushed him off the wall) where Earth Scroll was. Never managed to replicate it as an adult, and I wonder if any of you guys ever managed to get that alternative scenario?
You mean the scenario where he falls down and Musashi pushes a boulder down on him from the top? I managed to do that and the regular scenario.
Yup that's the one, I really enjoyed how Musashi hasn't lost his touch between chapters to throw heavy objects down on his enemies. Too bad Rootrick wasn't completely eliminated like Steam Knight. Poor Capriccola. :[
>It gets written off as a sony Zelda-clone
What's more insane is this was released before Ocarina of Time and its still considered a "clone". Sad.
>I remember thinking why other games that time period didn't have internal game clocks.
moon RPG came out before BF Musashi
but not on the west so you woudn't know at the time
shounen kirby with werewolves
I grew up with it and still play it every now and then. Wish the remake was actually good.
It did not get a sequel because the devs that made it ended up being forced into MMO hell with XI (still continuing for any who did not leave)
Is FFXI any good these days? I think I've heard people talk about how it required a party to get anything done, which is appealing compared to modern MMOs. Is that still true?
It's spicy the same way old school MMO's were. If that's your jam, it's gonna be fun. If that's not, then you're gonna not just hate it, you're gonna despise it. I also think that it's still a tad watered down, with the ability to rent out NPC's that do an okay job and let's you do what you need to do to level up.
If you don't think SLM is good then your gay
So how do I avoid being gay?
That's the fun part, you don't!
And to make it funnier, the gay in those sentences was original gay which meant simply "happy" because I said so. Homosexuality destroyed.
Look, I known this gets thrown out a lot on here but you homosexuals have to go back to /reddit
If you think SLM is good then your gay
if you're indifferent to SLM then your gay
The second Steamwood platforming segment made me rage. Turns out you just need to be patient with it, despite the town's imminent explosion.
The platforming in this game was atrocious for sure but luckily the rest of the game made up for it
I remember being in elementary school and snapping a large stick into a big stick and a little stick and swinging them around the woods like I was Musashi wielding Lumina and Fusion. Had the biggest crush on Bubbles.
That's actually pretty wholesome, good for you to have such fond memories of pure childhood fun. :] I liked Jam from the bakery. Not much art for her sadly. :[
What was wrong with Samurai Legends Musashi?
The sequel is excellent though.
Funny thing is I never knew about its existence, until I got into heated argument with my best friend at the time. We were reminiscing games we played before we knew each other while playing I-Ninja together.
This prompted me to mention Musashi (because he looked somewhat similar to main character of I-Ninja) a game with loud mouthed protagonist who used magical swords and had super strength to throw things, copied abilities from his foes and had long hair. To which my friend replied "Yeah exactly, his hair was so long and I liked the distinct look of each elemental sword he had." To that I reply "wait a sec, he had two swords, one was for temporarily stealing abilities and second had many extra abilities unlocked from finding sealed magical scrolls during the game."
"Uh, no you were learning new moves and combos permanently, and we were saving multiple princesses, not unsealing scrolls you dumb twat!" "THERE WAS ONLY ONE PRINCESS YOU UTTER moron!"
Before our mutual ignorance escalated any further, we showed each other what game each of us was talking about. Thus we tried the other Musashi games we never knew about. Fun times. :]
I rented it for the FF8 demo and ended up loving it.
I enjoyed the small town setting of BFM and how you would interact with the villagers throughout the story. The one location focus let them flesh out the NPCs as the story progressed and it was pretty neat. You really only get that in a few games. Farm Sim games are all about that but I don't like Farm Sims.
Are there any other games with a town component that isn't some life sim/RPG? Off the top of my head
>Mega Man Legends
>Shenmue
>Bully
>Deadly Premonition
Recently I started playing Westerado and that was pretty fun. It had a small community in the desert split across 2 towns.
Dark Cloud a little bit? You build up the city as you go, but there is a different one each chapter. Not the same.
is that the guy from newgrounds rumble
I still remember the day I got Samurai Legend Musashi from EBGames when I was like 14 and how excited I was to play the sequel to BFM, and then how fricking crushed I was later that night. What the frick happened?
Look at it
That design alone is a red flag.
I didn't enjoy that game as much as PS1 original, but if I had to point fingers at what felt "off" in that iteration... it was the fact PS2 Musashi was pretty much grown young man, but someone in voice director's booth, insisted to make his VA sound like extremely moronic Mona Marshall voice acting for a child character throughout the game. Never go full moron, even if director insists.
Squaresoft truly was making banger after banger. What the frick happened?
Squaresoft got taken over by capitalists and business management majors
the only thing I was never able to do was get all the action figures from the shop.
Why the internet's sudden love for Brave Fencer Musashi? I mean I'm glad my childhood game is finally being talked about but its just so random. Did an e-celeb say something?
>free-est Ganker-thinker
I'm just glad I'm not the only one that played it as a kid, since nobody I've talked to IRL has even heard of it.
What do you mean? It's always been fondly loved. Especially since a majority of people picked it up for the FF8 demo and discovered they actually got a fun game out of that purchase.
It's hard for PS1 games to get the spotlight because there were a large variety of solid games on the system. Ask 10 people their favorite games on the PS1 and you'll get different answers. Ask 10 people their favorite games on the 64 and you'll get mostly the same list of Nintendo and Rare games.
Also, why can't I see the views on this video...
