What's funny is that JRPGs (both action and traditional turn-based) are having something of a renaissance right now in terms of popularity: Elden Ring, Persona, GBF: Relink, DD2, Palworld, etc. I mean, the 2 most popular mobile games of the moment (Genshin and Star Rail) represent both flavors of the genre and are generating money hand over fist.
With that in mind, it's crazy that the most globally famous JRPG franchise in history has released two new games in the past year and both of them were flops. They need to do an FF9-style back to basics game to reestablish what the series even represents. Over a decade of trend-chasing me too slop has completely stripped the Final Fantasy name of any meaning or prestige.
They need to stop insisting on timed Playstation exclusivity.

XV isn't a character action game though, it has more RPG elements than XVI and a party. I was talking about shit like Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta. Historically the genre's always had a low sales ceiling. Meanwhile FFX had done 8.5M+, VII had done 10M+ on PS1, VIII 8.6M, FFXII 6M+ and FFXIII 9.6M. XV was riding a huge wave of hype and if XVI kept those elements and wasn't restricted to PS5 it would've sold more, probably. They went for a genre that's historically low sales. DMC3 on PS2 didn't even hit 3M by itself initially, it needed the HD collection to catapult it there (and that was heavily discounted to boot)

Check out sales of other Cags too. Kamiya, Itsuno and other developers have all talked about how it's a low sales genre which is why publishers are so hesitant to greenlight them.

I hate to tell you this, but people didn't buy FF because they really liked turn-based games. Final Fantasy became a known series because of the story and spectacle, not for being four homies in a row. It's why FF4 is one of the most notable SNES RPGs even though it lacks any customization whatsoever. It's why FF6 is considered a landmark game while FF5 gets less attention paid to it, despite FF5 having better combat and a genius progression system. It's why FF7's US marketing hinged entirely on the incredible FMVs and NOT the gameplay, which paid incredible dividends. It's why FF has always far outsold other JRPGs outside of Japan.
Oh get off it. 7R combat is the best combat the franchise has ever had, and no amount of bullshit nor delusion will change that objective reality. And the bullshit your pulling that sales are precisely because people care about turn-based is pulled directly out of your ass.

I sort of liked 16 but it would have only been improved if they kept some RPG elements. Party management, equipment, status effects. What I'd really like is 7R's combat and systems with 16's setting and presentation.
Anyone played the 16 DLC? I see the next expansion is out soon, but I haven't played the first. Might replay the game with both when it's out. I never tried FF mode because frick them for making hard mode unlock after completion. Base game was so easy, but who wants to jump straight back in after 60 hours?
The first dlc is primarily gameplay focused, with lore on the fallen. It was pretty damn fun and slightly challenging, and it has my favourite boss fight in the game. There’s bits you get that change stuff like how many enemy-steps you can land and increased aerial damage. It’s short but sweet. I’d recommend waiting for leviathan tho cause both dlcs are right before the final boss.
