Back then you had admins on private servers who were mostly chill about a lot of stuff and there was no global moderation. Chat policing was rare on official servers and would usually be done in cases of crime being committed but even CP or terrorism discussions went on with no issues.
You can talk about the same stuff you did 20 years ago now, sure, but the following day you'll see your money stolen one way or another.

Esports influence casual gaming only indirectly (corpos running esports push SBMM and censorship into casual part of teh game). Like there were 1.6 CS tournaments right from the begging but how they played CS didn't affect casual pubs in any way.
Esports has everything to do with it, it’s what made the moronic masses go from ‘let’s have fun’ to ‘I must win’ mentality; every game has a meta, if you don’t follow that meta you’re actively self sabotaging, if your teammate isn’t following the meta he’s purposely throwing the game.
The multiplayer aspects of a lot of modern games are incredibly shallow and very strict while have becoming more mandated, Skill based match making, no custom gamemodes or maps. The companies do it out of cheapness and the masses accept it because John McL33t is getting paid a couple million a year to be good at video games therefore there’s no reason to complain because why would he be making money if the game wasn’t good

It still is if you find the right community or group of friends. Games like call of duty though will never be fun again like black ops 2 or cod4 because of skill based/engagement optimized matchmaking. As well as other systems that keep you unhappy but still playing and paying.

I think more blame should go to mobile g*mers for making companies realize they could just milk whales for money instead of making a good, fun online game.

Matchmaking without private servers can be run without SBMM, MW2 and BO1 didn't have SBBM. And they were blast and people remember them as "good ol times".
Reminder that theres still hope. XDefiant is probably a flop and I don't play it but as far as I know it's headed by an ex cod dev and they specifically mentioned it does not have SBMM. Companies and developers know people hate this shit. The main problem is there's still a lot of normies who buy these games without a second thought.

Last I checked you can still play lots of favorite gmod gamemodes like TTT and DarkRP. Source games have probably been affected the least by shitters honestly. They're more monetized though.
It could be worse but so many gamemodes went extinct and when I find a thriving one I really like there's a high chance they only make update logs available through discord

I stopped playing CS when all of the servers turned into quirky modded playgrounds featuring hundreds of megabytes of sound and texture packs. CS was actually fun and competitive before that, with clan servers and an organic competitive scene.
