The story is baby's first Nietzsche and nothing that hasn't been seen and done countless times before. People only discuss the sexed up character designs because it's the only memorable thing about the entire package. It's Soullessness: The Game, good at its core, but has some surface-level issues which are extremely easy to fix if devs actually cared:
1) Fetch quests and some other aspects of the game (like locked chests for 2nd play-through) designed specifically to waste your time because they were afraid game will be deemed too short.
2) Level progression serves no purpose other than again - to waste your time. I will never finish cool dlc where you play as robots because I am not interested in grinding and returning there many times with appropriate level. A typical case when devs just put some element into the game without thinking just because it's a part of the formula. Weapon progression would be more than enough.
3) Other elements that weren't well thought (or thought out at all) are instantaneous, almost infinite potions and shooting which doesn't use any resources nor impact your actions at all. Also, a game like this should be very easy to balance yet it's surprisingly shit: on normal with right passives you might forget about dodging and be fine - on hard you will get one-shotted a lot.

I'm 35, I've finished well over 600 game titles throughout the decades, and believe me when I say that Nier Automata truly feels like a long-lost masterpiece from the very Golden Era of the video games.
It's a perfect combo of fun, varied gameplay, stellar, atmospheric art- and sound-design, good story, and even greater sub-text, latter two that use the unique interactive nature of video games as the vehicle.
It's an art work that could only ever work as a game, and it's definitely a game I will be revisiting multiple times in the future.

I really wish I saw in this game what other people see in it. I reached the super special SHMUP ending and felt nothing but relief that I could play a different game. Worst combat I've ever trudged through in a Platinum game.
