i still like to smooth the surface out a bit so i don't accidentally run into a wall and lose my momentum but that's just personal preference and you really don't need to do that
Terraria is inherently an unfair game. Take a fair game like Dark Souls for example. In Dark Souls, you don't need to build platforms or use specific weapons or builds in order to clear the game. You're never forced to do any of those things. You can play the game with starting equipment and beat every boss without getting hit. But in Terraria, movement options are required. Overpowered weapons are required. Building arenas are required. If you don't do any of those things, you take unavoidable damage. It's an unfair game and I'm tired of people pretending it isn't. A fair game would let you be able to beat every boss with starting gear and be able to do it consistently without taking any damage after enough practice. That's how you gauge how fair a game is. Taking unavoidable damage if you don't play how the game wants you to play makes it unfair design.
This is why all turn based games are also unfair, because you can't dodge things with skill or getting the correct timing on things. You are forced to take unavoidable damage because it's the enemy's turn. It's not fair design.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the dev forcing the player to take damage. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it wrong.

Yes, vanilla Queen Slime is pretty shit. It's a good thing that someone knows how to make fun and entertaining fights in modded though. Infernum turns Queen slime into an absolute spectacle and is a blast to fight and the rewards for it are great, since you get a TON of Souls of Light, which make for easy Mimic farm if you want to go that route or for some quick crafts into good weapons.
