Random encounters filter zoomers and boomers alike. Literally no one has time for that shit anymore, even Dragon Quest shifted over to visible encounters. I tried replaying Skies of Arcadia and it aged like shit with that ridiculous encounter rate. Meanwhile Chrono Trigger aged like fine wine.

Being able to run past encounters is a good thing, it can prevent you from getting over-leveled, and a lot of games with visible encounters will make enemies chase you or avoid you depending on the level difference, which is a neat way of gauging how ready your are for a boss. There's nothing zoomer about wanting visible encounters. If devs trully wanted to entertain zoomers, then they'd just add a jump button that doesn't do anything like in Star Ocean 6

Damn, I got an inkling the game wouldn't live up to expectations because the spinoff did a terrible job with world building. Lenses are not a good substitute for runes, they feel too artificial compared to runes, which felt like a primeval force, probably due in part to people having rune-lens gauntlets or whatever instead of having an innate number of "slots" in their soul to accommodate runes. Balance wasn't the greatest in the old games, because the characters with three open slots could generally be tweaked to outperform anyone else, but some team attacks made the lower slot characters worth using, if not for battle effectiveness, then for flavor. I'll muscle my way through the game to eke out whatever enjoyment I can, and I pray the Shadow Hearts successor that was co-funded with this game isn't also a wet fart.

To be fair, Suikoden 5 is actually a really good game, despite the 10-hour prologue.
Yeah, it's derivative of Suikoden 2 but the assassination scene was genuinely well-done and I liked all the fake out endings.
I feel like Suikoden 5 tried to take the important aspects of 2 and frame them into its own narrative and gameplay systems. Eiyuden feels like it is trying to copy 2 without understanding what made it work.
Some parts of 5 come off as too much of a 2 try-hard but even then it still had real stakes and did a good job of setting up the personal meaning to (You) with its long prologue. It's telling as hell that no one who talked about Eiyuden's story so far even said anything nice about that.
I forgive them being a bit try-hard in some places after the disaster that was Suikoden 4 just so they had some connective tissue to link 5 with 1 and 2.
Yeah, Suikoden 4 was pretty shit but Rhapsodia was surprisingly decent.

yeah that's what fricks with me about eiyuden when even compared to 5. the prologue is fricking long but the payoff is quite good, and the stakes are set very high; in eiyuden, your village gets put slightly on fire, no one dies, the empire walks into a town and just chills, and then you go back to your comfy town and chill for 2 weeks. 5 sets up what you are about to lose and do end up losing pretty well

that's actually really close to how i feel about the games. i'm weird about 3 and 4 and my mind can change on them from time to time, and i like 4 more than most people. from what i've played i would place it around 3 or 4 subjectively. it feels like things just aren't working properly and it fricks with how the game feels to play, and i think the opening hours are weaker than the rest of the series.

Some of the best times I've had on this board were times like the XBC2 release when everyone was playing through more or less at a similar pace (or at least, when I wasn't so busy in my life that I was miles behind the crowd) and the discussion was fun, positive, and vibrant, thread after thread for about two weeks before the bulk finished it and posters started being replaced by shitposters.

The localization has made for some horrible lines, that's undeniable, but it's not as bad as this thread would have you believe and is far from the biggest problem in this game.
Really, the main issue is the bugs (mainly the recruitment one) and gameplay (and even then, it doesn't make the game bad, but the balance makes a number of characters pointless to use in hard mode) but Ganker would rather talk about how they want all localizers to burn in hell so you'll just keep getting threads like this while anons keep regurgitating the flaws pointed out by one anon that actually played when pressed about why else they don't like the game outside of the localization stuff.

On one hand, it is nice that the main issues can just get patched out/in, but on the other hand the game should get shit for launching in the state that it's in.
This game really does feel like the average PS1 JRPG atm, I'm not talking about the well-known stuff like Xenogears of FF7. This is some proper warts-and-all Thousand Arms level JRPG that really earned it's 7/10 reviews because it has a lot of good but damn near every good point gets countered with some bafflingly archaic decision, this one could be made much better with some patches at the very least.
Hope this studio gets to make another game, because it's actually a really solid foundation to build on, but the devs really need to understand that there's a good reason as to why JRPGs changed some shit over the last three decades. I'm got the feeling that they really wanted to harken back to the good ol' days, but there are ways to make old school JRPGs without actually giving them the same shitty problems most franchises grew out of decades ago. Would recommend to anybody that likes Suikoden or old school JRPGs after it gets patched, but it's definitely skippable right now.

This game sounds like it has the exact same issues I had with FE Echoes. Faithful to a fault because the director was such a big nostalgiagay that he purposefully left in the trash game design choices from the 90s.
That's a running theme with a lot of these KS games made by the original devs of old franchises. They should be using this opportunity to make what they originally made again, but updated with the lessons learned from the evolution of the genre, but most of them just end up making legally distinct versions of the exact same game that made them famous which usually doesn't fly in 202X.
Now all that being said, this game even in its current state, is still a far better game than Suikoden 4 and 5 imo. But that's not a high bar to clear in my eyes, since I fricking hate those two are actually shit games. Eiyuden beats them by just reaching the dizzying heights of "okay".

Plenty of games added revised translations like Ys 8 which got shat on for the low effort "Big Hole" translation and Astlibra which polished up the translation for the Switch release and backported it to PC.

Iga was paid to make an Igavania and he made the best Igavania so far, teres tons of varied enemies and countless pieces of equipment and shards you can equip, i guarantee you and me finished the game with completely different builds (assuming you even finished the game), not to mention the adition of side quests, crafting, re-spawning chests, on top of the RPG elements and the shard system drastically decrease the tedium of backtracking, you are ALWAYS making progress, which isnt something i can say about Blasphemous and SPECIALLY Shantae, because atleast the combat in Blasphemous is good, Shantae has shit combat on top of low tier enemies often surviving more than one hit even by the end game, so you get slowed down by those shitstains while backtracking and you hardly get anything for the trouble

I saw the line comparisons for this game, and in some lines, the characters look like they are talking about completely different topics.
I have familiarity with Final Fantasy mistranslations, but generally, the characters were still referring to the same topics in English and Japanese. Why would translators have this much freedom to completely write a new script altogether?

I really don't give a shit about the localization, but I am kind of annoyed on the overreliance on having the same QoL as a classic PS2 RPG. As in not much.
A lot of the annoyances get removed or improved on with new items and unlockables but sometimes just using them has a restriction, like you can only one at a time.

I haven't gotten far in, but it's really bland thus far. The only character I can muster up the slightest interest in fricked off from my party a couple hours ago, and now I'm stuck with the world's most generic protagonist and a bunch of interchangeable party members who all talk like a bunch of morons thanks to the localization.
I was hoping the story would pick up, but reading other anons' impressions of it have pretty much killed that hope.
Any missable characters?
