They had no version control. They literally bought buckets of used usbs just to keep copies of everything.
Then when they brought the senior dev on board, he didn't know what git was (which is what the internal UE version control uses), but he did know how to use SVN. So they decided to sue SVN instead.
If it's funny or it aligns with my previously held beliefs then I consider it true until proven otherwise, unless it's not funny, then I just disregard the new information.

Even when working on a project by yourself there will be times when you will frick something up majorly. In those stances, version control can help you not waste days of work or save you from creating a bunch of bugs that didn't exist before when you try to re-implement something from memory.
Git is our god and savior.
Or SVN, or whatever. Anything.
Plus, being able to look back on your comments to understand what you were thinking when you did X can be so incredibly useful.

Git isn't some panacea here, it just makes it easier to manage and track changes to your core source files that let you build things from scratch. It isn't even designed for artifacts or assets.

That leaves the possibility open that you'll frick something majorly between backups.
For development, git is one hell of a panacea.
Having a backup of your source code is of course mandatory, but that's a separate conversation. For day to day software development, you need version control so that you can easily track commits and revert changes when needed.
Frick, the tracking itself is already a big deal. I can't count the times I'm working on something that's behaving weirdly only to look back at the commit history and see that somebody changed something by mistake or without account for possibility X or Y.
Seriously, I get that version control didn't exist at one point, but there's a reason Linus created Git. I can't stress enough how much of a big deal it really is.

both not true, process and procedure is the safest (but not easiest) thing and if you buy into a version control system you get both "safe" and "easy" with a 20 year old well documented process that works for basically every group of people that have ever used it.
your "copy a backup" even if automated isn't as good as version control, if you're backing up on a time interval you can lose whatever that interval is worth of progress if something goes wrong, if you're manually backing up after you make a feature then you can also lose the progress feature. if you're backing up after every small fragment of code you add then your process is slower than version control with none of the benefits.
basically the trade-offs lean heavily toward version control no matter who you are, if you think otherwise - you are actually a mouth breathing moron who hasn't thought it through.
