Palworld devs talk about going bankrupt from server fees.
>PocketPair's CEO brought up the topic of Palworld's server fees, which are expected to exceed 70 million yen (around $480,000 USD based on recent exchange rates) for January due to the game's unexpected success.

They sold 12 million copies on steam. At 30$ - 10$ steam cut that's still 240 million in revenue, how am i supposed to believe the server fees are impacting them in any way

You are right, its a lot of upfront money, but the problem is Server costs pile up. So they don't have problems now, but its EA and a cheap one at that. In one year that money will be gone. Its pretty common for devs to forget about it and frick up when not planning a way to get monthly income.

        [...]
think as the server cost as a hole at the bottom of a bucket and sales being water being poured inside said bucket
if the water going in is less than the one leaking out it will quickly drain that shit and the dream of pails of water will be over

then why did they make an online multiplayer game in the first place? would they be better off if they just shut down the servers and made it single player? if yes, then they should do it. if no, then they should stop whining about it. this seems like a complete nonissue.

          Anonymous

It's not "online multiplayer" - it just has multiplayer that's primarily player or server based, they were just stupid enough to create "official" servers instead of leaving it up to the community.

            Anonymous

sounds like they should start charging a service fee for access to servers, like minecraft realms. that shit is less than $10 a month and somehow they manage it. seems like a simple solution.

              Anonymous

If they're stupid enough to keep hosting official servers, I at least agree with you. But I feel they shouldn't be hosting official servers, personally. Leave that to the community. There's a reason most people think MC's Realms are stupid, and community-run servers, even the scummy p2w ones, are so much more popular, and how Hytale/Hypixel even got as big as they were.

          Anonymous

sounds like they want to have their cake and eat it too. The official servers are helping their playercounts but they don't want to pay for them because they are Japanese israelites and literal crypto bros. They are probably are trying to justify mtx right now.

        Anonymous

What? Yea there's tons of them.

      Anonymous

You absolutely can host, however if you want to interact with other users you probably want to keep on the official servers since you can modify the game to your hearts content, you can't transfer saves from local to multi and back.

      Anonymous

correct me if I'm wrong but I was under the impression that Steam games allow users to host the games in terms of running the server software and game logic, but then they route the network traffic through an HTTP server for the convenience of the users. Without the intermediate server, the users will have to do some port forwarding or make an exception in the firewall. This is normal for hosting an Internet game server, you'll have done if if you've ever run a Unreal Tournament server or something like that. Most users can't/won't do that so the game companies provide the intermediate server solution.
For a persistent massively multiplayer game you can't expect users to be hosts so you have to pay full server costs, including much more CPU and Memory than you would need for simply rerouting network traffic.

No, what worked in their favor is having a legion of furshits willing to eat up anything that even remotely panders to them.
Same happened with Five Nights at Freddy's.

      >Pokemon
      >Palworld
      >Digimon
      >Yokai Watch
All of these games feel like they are perpetually two generations behind every other game in every way.
Not to mention it's embarassing to play them because of how they are obviously made for toddlers, feels like watching My Little Pony.

Palworld has guns, torture, murder, implied rape and slavery, that shit isn't for kids.

It is like calling SMT for kids when there is literally Satan in the roster of monsters you can use.

          Anonymous

Palworld also doesn't have any gore system, the pals don't get injured, they don't show any signs of pain, when they die they just get swirly eyes like in the Pokemon anime when Pokemons get hit with a blast that should have torn them to pieces, and there's no slavery because the pals will always do their cute noises when they finish a task as if they are enjoying it.

And the "implied rape" is just like how in Pokemon people actually hunt and eat Pokemons: it's relegated to the Pokedex or some book and the devs will never have the balls to actually show it.

Palworld is to actual serious games what FNAF is to horror: there's only a tiny glimpse of what it claims to be, but it covers it all in a wrap of cutesy crap to not offend the millennials and zoomers who would start seething if you actually do all those things for real.
Just go read all the posts of "I JUST HECKING LOVE MY HECKING CUTE PALS" which obvious come from Pokemon fans who also shat up the franchise with their homosexualry. If you actually introduced ways to torture to injure, to mutilate and skin the Pokemons and force the players to do it they would all seethe and bail out.

You know that Pals get knocked out, because it would be annoying to have Pals die permanantly left and right in battles, and having to replace them. And that is ignoring all of the reactions pals have when they see their kinds murdered (varying from agressivity, to cowardcy). Also https://palworld.fandom.com/wiki/Hangyu
I am not saying Palworld is as dark as SMT, but I mean..Cmon, it isn't for kids exactly

Palworld would have been far more unique and fun if it was that way.

They are dead, but that death is not shown in blood and gore, it's shown because they get swirly anime eyes.
                It's all sanitized for kids.
Or when you eat them, which is just menu crawling and the same cooking animation all food gets, there's nothing in it that resembles webm related.

A Pokemon game that's a mix of Monster Hunter and RDR2's sense of realism when it comes to handling animals after killing them would be great.

It is called stylization, but that doesn't change the fact you go out and kill animals to consume their meat or get their skin, and more often than not you do it with a gun, preferably by shooting them on the head since it does more damage.

And if that same gun kills animals and there are humans in the game you can shoot with that same gun, then that means that every guy you ragdoll is actually just dead.

                Anonymous

                >It is called stylization,
No, it's called sanitation. Stylization is what Monster Hunter does, there you actually visibly hurt the enemies, make them bleed, mutilate them, they will scream and start limping in pain when severely hurt and then kill them and skin them, it doesn't try to hide that.

                > that doesn't change the fact you go out and kill animals to consume their meat or get their skin
Yeah, and it's done in the exact same way even Pokemon itself would do if it stopped hiding away the fact that people eat Pokemon in Pokedex entries: by removing all the violence.
This is as adult as Fortnite or Dragon Ball.
