It has less filler and thus better pacing, better overall music variety before annoying synths started taking over TTYD and SPM, and a tighter experience.
There are several TTYD mechanics that serve only to profoundly dumb the game down. Companion HP and that one badge that lets you swap companions for free, for example.
Was it? I never used it either way, so it's not surprising if I did forget. My point is that mechanics that remove the need for strategy from a turn based game serve only to reduce the combat to mindless busywork. If you made a bad call on what companion you should have out, then the game should punish you for that; if there's no consequence, then it's simply not interesting.
The introduction of companion HP, for example, meant that Mario effectively became untouchable to front line attackers since he could just use companions as free meat shields. By the endgame, certain enemies would have to chew through literally hundreds of HP before they would even have a chance at hitting Mario, which simply isn't possible in any field battle. Compare that to PM64, wherein letting your companion get hit was always a strategic decision, and almost always a bad one at that.
that sounds more like a balance issue than anything being wrong with partner health. Let's not pretend that either of these games are difficult nor take much strategy to begin with
I'm just getting started with this patch, I was busy playing another one called Black Pit.

They nerfed the BP from 4 to 7 in both ttyd and the ttyd patch. Also in the patch you can scale enemy HP/ATK higher, for what it's worth.
>They nerfed the BP from 4 to 7 in both ttyd and the ttyd patch.
Not actually a nerf in ttyd, since you're always going to be leveling BP in that game. Having access to infinite HP Up and FP Up badges, and having those badges work at a 1:1 ratio to level ups is disastrous for build variety.
It's better in a lot of ways.
There are actual levels instead of hallways, field enemies actually go beyond 10 HP, and the combat has more depth due to there being far fewer get-out-of-jail-free mechanics.
>There are actual levels instead of hallways
I really hated what TTYD regressed to that. Boggly Woods was utterly unacceptable and it just kept getting worse.
>Boggly Woods
The real offender is having to go back and forth through that forest in Twilight Town 4 times. Legitimately the worst part of the game in my opinion.
SMRPG is a three-homies-in-a-row Final Fantasy game, the main similarity is the overworld, combat is totally different
Standard RPG format with some platforming and the introduction of timed hits.
A very solid entry with a great OST, but Geno is practically an overpowered non-entity stat stick. I don't even remember his personality.
Yeah I thought these things too. What about Mario and Luigi (obviously I’d start with Superstar Saga)?
Cool, I’ll probably still play Partners in Time since it came out between SS and BiS.
Very similar overworld again but M&L is defined by overworld travel upgrades, which in SS and Dream Team become your "magic" as Bros. Attacks
In Partbers in Time and beyond they forego this for Bros. Items which operate the same but have no bearing on the traversal upgrades and vice-versa
I don’t think those things really matter to me, I just want the good combat combined with the writing that makes Mario RPGs good.

>tfw I was bored enough and enjoyed the music so much that Mario just facetanked everything from ch7's ice palace boss while Goombario charged for so many turns to oneshot him with one head bonk
no, its a barely challenging game even for a child ontop of committing several trends that would appear in the games that'd come after it.
Perhaps the die was cast when Miyamoto let Ryota Kawada direct the series, he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of RPG that meant anything to anybody, just rediculously profitable games that outsell anything that has "soul". Super Paper Mario might be anti mandate(or not), but its certainly the anti rpg series on the wii in its refusal of wonder, beauty, and excitement. no one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.
>A-atleast it was good though
"No!"
The Writing is dreadful, the gameplay was terrible, As I played i noticed every time a character went for a battle, they were platforming instead of taking turns.
I began marking on the back of an envelope every time there wasn't an RPG battle. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Ryota's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that means he has no other style of writing. Later i read a lavish, loving review of Super Paper Mario. It said something to the effect of, "if these kids are playing Super Paper Mario at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to play Fez. And they were quite right. they were not being ironic. when you play "Super Paper Mario" you are, in fact, trained to play Fez.
I refuse to believe anyone with a fully developed and functioning brain likes anything past super. Whats the point of turnbased RPG mechanics when it doesnt even matter?
I can understand liking CS and OK (I liked OK, I consider it a fun adventure game that unfortunately likes to pretend it's a horrible RPG). What I don't get is liking Sticker Star. Nothing is good about that game. Nothing is redeemable. It's just bad. Everything it tries, it fails.
It definitely is worth playing, it's my favorite of the series personally but I think it's on-tier with TTYD if I put my bias aside a bit. PM64 is a very visually appealing game and has better level design though the prologue can be a slog for people due to the lack of action commands so don't let that part discourage you.
I finally caved in and got the newest entry (used) the other day after being disappointed heavily twice enough to make infographs for this series. It really just looks like Color Splash 2 to me but I'm going to ask anyways.
What am I in for?
yes
Yes, it's better
This, unironically. It's easier but it oozes more charm and is consistently good. Though you'll want to get used to the different button timings.
Hell yeah. Some say it’s even better. I hold them at about the same level. It’s definitely an essential, just like TTYD.
Please play the original, it's better in a lot of ways.
yes as long as you are nice to whacka.
It has less filler and thus better pacing, better overall music variety before annoying synths started taking over TTYD and SPM, and a tighter experience.
play the TTYD64 mod, it just came out and ports all TTYD mechanics into 64 and adds extra content
It's still buggy. I got stuck in a room and can't exit
There are several TTYD mechanics that serve only to profoundly dumb the game down. Companion HP and that one badge that lets you swap companions for free, for example.
>that one badge that lets you swap companions for free
but that one was already in 64

Yes, have fun.

Yes its amazing, one of thebeet games ever it's also harder

it's one of int sys's best games and they amke some goddamn amazing games. so yes.
Is this worth playing if I love PM64 and TTYD?
It's a good game but it is nothing like Paper Mario
Yeah I thought these things too. What about Mario and Luigi (obviously I’d start with Superstar Saga)?
SS and BIS are pretty good, DT is okay and everything else isn't worth your time
Cool, I’ll probably still play Partners in Time since it came out between SS and BiS.
I don’t think those things really matter to me, I just want the good combat combined with the writing that makes Mario RPGs good.

I'd say so, I think that the first game is actually better.
Definitely. Gameplay is more simplistic but the world design is far superior.
Yes, it's more storybook like tonally but gameplaywise it scratches the same itch. Only real difference is that only mario has HP
>tfw I was bored enough and enjoyed the music so much that Mario just facetanked everything from ch7's ice palace boss while Goombario charged for so many turns to oneshot him with one head bonk
Yes. It's a little better.
Is SPM worth playing?
If you really like the writing of TTYD, sure.
Gameplay and most designs are totally different, makes me wonder what a non mario IP done in the same vein from Intelligent systems would be like.
no, its a barely challenging game even for a child ontop of committing several trends that would appear in the games that'd come after it.

Kek, good pasta, genuinely can’t tell if you like the game or not
the real answer is somewhere in the middle where i enjoy several concepts and scenes, but the actual game section is rather boring.
>>A-atleast it was good though
>"No!"
kek, every time
I remember when 64gays got along with TTYDgays. Why the hostility now? Are TOKgays falseflagging or something?
jesse what the frick are you talking about
So you're just going to ignore the dozen or so smug and smarmy posts saying "64 is better"?
I think so.
Thanks bros, I'll give it a go.
Really itching for more PM, TTYD was a lot better than I remember it being.
I'll always think this image is just ttydgay bait
Nah, played TTYD this year for the first time and it was okay, but a literal corridor walker compared to 64
TTYD is better than Super though, so something’s wrong here bud
I never got Super as a kid because I hated the trailer and thought the Wii was shit in general.
Willing to give it a shot, sell me on it.
It's a platformer RPG with quirky adult humor at times. I recommend it.
Gaslight yourself that it is a spin off and not the first sign of downfall in the franchise and you'll like it more.
Playable Bowser

fixed
This is how I feel except I enjoyed SPM as a fun experimental spin off.
Yep
This. People keep trying to shill Origami King but I refuse to touch it.
Brother just try it. It's genuinely as good as the first two. Get if for cheap or play it on yuzu or somethin
>He played the sequel before the original
The frick you doing boy?
Yes, it's the best in the series.
If you do play this ROM hack. Paper Mario 64 with all the TTYD features: https://youtu.be/HFngd-Uq6p0
Very much so. TTYD has higher highs and lower lows. Preferences vary, but I prefer the original.
64 is better in everyway outside the combat
>thinner mario
very problematic
The actual original is about to get a remake.
No paper mario is worth playing, go straight to mario RPG
Yes, it has SOUL and is just as good as TTYD.
It definitely is worth playing, it's my favorite of the series personally but I think it's on-tier with TTYD if I put my bias aside a bit. PM64 is a very visually appealing game and has better level design though the prologue can be a slog for people due to the lack of action commands so don't let that part discourage you.
Absolutely yes. I'm
Sorry. I was going to say that I'm playing this on NSO and really enjoy it.
I finally caved in and got the newest entry (used) the other day after being disappointed heavily twice enough to make infographs for this series. It really just looks like Color Splash 2 to me but I'm going to ask anyways.
What am I in for?
A better Color Splash. It's a good adventure game that unfortunately likes to pretend it's a terrible RPG.
The bosses are the best in the series, as are the forced enemy fights for the combat system. Overworld and characters are top notch too.
