Super is basically designed as an action RPG platformer. If they're gonna go through all the work of making a game work with the conventional Paper Mario battle system, they might as well just make a new game.
Between this and SMRPG it does seem like Nintendo is trying to groom studios both new and old into being capable of supplying new Mario RPGs. TTYD makes sense as a foundational starting point (Paper Mario 64 is already on NSO and TTYD is in much higher need of an improvement or remake, on top of treating action commands as a given) and SMRPG is the same, especially when SMRPG itself eventually morphed into both Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi.
They don't need to groom anything. Origami King is an incredible game that the producers took a massive shit on making it just okay instead. But all they have to do is not take a shit on the hard work of the developers by banning progression systems, normal battle mechanics and original characters and they can make gold. Origami King has probably the worst gameplay of any game I have ever played, and yet I still enjoyed it. That should tell you how talented the artists, musicians and writers are.

I will say that even if it would be incredibly dumb, you CAN still explore the world post-game to see npc reactions and do a few extra troubles. Maybe that's a "wait and see" response.

No, there wont be any significant new content, because the game unironically doesn't need it and wouldn't benefit from it. The game is already like 30 hours long. By the end of the game I'm always getting a little tired of it. One of the best elements of the Mario RPGs is that they aren't that long.

In the original, everyone refers to Vivian as a boy. If Vivian is meant to be a troony in the original, then the game is directly insulting trannies because no one actually acknowledges him as a girl. There is a risk that Treehouse will bring over Vivian being a boy, but remove all the characters calling him one.

They added a shitload of reflections to the game in general. I feel like they're going to use it to showcase an improved version on the switch 2, because one of the major improvements on that system is the introduction of raytracing hardware. Raytracing is most useful for high quality reflections. Personally I like it because it makes the game look otherworldly, kind of strange and that's something I enjoy. I like when a game looks weird, it makes it stand out, and shiny grass/carpet definitely looks weird.
The bottle on the ground is a nitpick, but man does this comparison highlight the visual downgrade. Coupled with the heavily censored localization, I don't see why I should buy this when I already own the original. I'm not going to throw money at nintendo just to make them realize sticker star is a losing formula. I hate how Jap companies will double, triple, even quadruple down on a bad decision because admitting they screwed up hurts their pride or whatever. It depends, TTYD is a GameCube gam3 that for a while has been rare to obtain and hasn't recieved re releases.
Piracy is an issue of a platform failing to provide users means to acquire games and for quite a long time piracy has been the only viable way to play TTYD at all. This remake is only really them trying to penetrate into a new playerbase and see how that goes.
I could see TTYD having a way higher ratio of emulation than a lot of other games, but I do think that even at best it would likely be only around another million playing that hadn't done so on original hardware. If I had to give a better estimate, it would likely be closer to half that number. Does put the game closer to other titles later on, but not by much. You also can't argue that well that the formula shifts marked a huge decrease in players here.

It is worth noting here that more than a lot of series the numbers here do largely correlate with people who owned these consoles. TTYD actually has the best ratio of buyers vs. console owners, although that doesn't help its exposure. It's also likely that the first two games would have sold way better in Japan in particular had their consoles not been disappointing over there in terms of adoption.

But we haven't seen any change that's a hard difference such as the difficulty being lowered or increased, features being removed or added, or any significant change to gameplay beyond some of the casino minigames.

I think the timing changes have been confirmed already, but even then it would be almost a given the timings would likely be at least a little more generous in the remake. It helps a lot that the game has a very linear approach to most of its action commands.

I can easily see this. Keep in mind as well that the power jump from the Gamecube to Switch is surprisingly small. Not like you're going to PS2 to PS5 here. I imagine they had to weigh either doubling down on the graphical updates or keeping the smoother frames, and the former made more sense to make it stand out. It also made it easier to work off the Color Splash and Origami King engine, since those two games were also 30 FPS.
Not a fan of the frame rate drop, but it's not like it was pure laziness. If they do in fact let you go 60 on next console, that would have likely sealed the final decision.
UI is worse, I don't like censored lines, the visuals are worse. When I have the original readily available, I need upsides rather than negatives to pull me to buy anything new.

it's still a speculation. Superguarding was a 3 frame window IIRC so it's either gonna be a 2 frame window which is the equivalent of them being a 4 frame window. I don't think that's gonna have that big of an impact.

I always liked that, among the Mario RPGs, Mario starts this game with the hammer.
In SMRPG he was just basically sleeping in before a date with Peach and then immediately rushed off to shove his boots up Bowser's ass before the Smithy Gang attacked, and then Toad commissions him to get to the Mushroom Kingdom, where he conveniently gets a hammer after pummeling two hammer bros to death. Same thing for Paper Mario the Original, he's going to a party and gets flung out of the sky to his death and is nursed back to health by goombas.
In the Mario & Luigi games they always find hammers early on, often in a contrived way.

You can not please everyone. There are people that just want a dry transliteration, or as close to it as possible since English and Japanese sentence structure is considerably different. There are people that enjoy stuff like Unicorn Overlord getting the same message across with a more theatrical script. Vivian was never meant to be a troony. Goombella explicitly refers to him as a man. There's no character in the game who calls him a girl (in the Japanese version). He's just a crossdresser, a trap like you often see in anime.
The difference between a crossdresser and transgender is that transgenders actually believe they are the other gender, not that they're just dressing up like it and therefore expect to live their life as if they are that gender. A key element of that is that trannies expect everyone else to acknowledge their "real" gender, except no one in TTYD does. There's nothing whatsoever that Vivian does to imply he really believes he's a girl.

The two concepts can overlap, especially at the time the original game was written. Vivian came off as a similar approach to Birdo, just a little more sympathetic. As pointed out, Goombella's whole point was likely meant to be a running joke since she way later calls the Shadow Trio "sisters(?)" during the game's ending. It's clear that Vivian was meant to have some kind of gender confusion going on. Otherwise they would have dropped the point after Beldam's insult and maybe the tattle entry.

I don't think it will be. Pikmin 4 not only went back to Pikmin 2, it took Pikmin 2 farther with even more complex strategic elements, a more complex progression system and more focus on the mini dungeons. If they were gonna go half way to TTYD then I think they would have made Pikmin 4 half way between 3 and 2, but they basically pretended 3 never happened.

The Switch's last big release was Mario Wonder. A swan song is usually a game that gets overlooked due to timing despite quality backing it, rather than a last minute remake like this or some others coming out now. Out of Nintendo's slate right now, the most obvious one you might call a "swan song" would be the new Endless Ocean if it's actually good. New game in a long dormant series, likely not to sell that much, and could certainly form some cult status around it.
People have noticed there are new pipes in existing levels. Most likely they've cut out a lot of the backtracking by adding pipes between some of these longer sections. That's really what the game needed to be perfect, even if it isn't the most exciting change it's the most practical one they could have made.
I'll be happy if they added a pipe that goes between the base in keelhaul key and the outside entrance to pirates grotto because early chapter 5 was annoying going back to Flavio for a soda then head out to get a coconut then come back to Flavio then give the soda to Bobbery and then come back to take Flavio with you.

Frick it, I want to ask everyone here a question. If Wario appeared in Paper Mario, should he have dot eyes like Mario and Peach or normal eyes like Bowser?
It's so obnoxious seeing all the people who clearly don't watch any Japanese media not know what a trap is. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of these characters and I can think of no case where the character ascribed transgender ideology. Transgenderism just isn't a mainstream ideology in Japan, and it definitely wasn't 20 years ago. A girlish boy in Japanese media is a trap until proven otherwise.
I am going to fricking lose it if Treehouse actually forces transgender shit in the game. In the Japanese version every character calls him a man. If they remove all that while keeping him a boy that would be beyond disgusting even by their standards. I really hope they don't go that far, but it's treehouse we're talking about.
I'm just glad that Nintendo has finally started remaking games, with this and Mario RPG. We also did you Link's awakening but that was so low budget and shitty. With Mario RPG and this it's clear they're putting a ton of effort to make it as good as possible. It's important because there are many other Nintendo classics that deserve this kind of remake. Luigi's Mansion and Mario 64 for example. Bring those two up to modern graphics standard, and in Luigi's Mansion's case add some extra content.

Just the entire conceit of it looking worse in every way and forgetting that Square intended the OG to have a diorama / dollhouse look to it. Hence why Geno even exists as a character. At least the Link's Awakening remake was cute I guess, SMRPG Remake is more generic than Sticker Star. Literally every frame of every cutscene is borked and everyone just pretends otherwise.
TTYD remake is also the same situation, it fricks up everything but because it looks roughly the same people don't care.
If you're gonna be so defensive about it there's no point engaging with you. The remake raped the OG and that's just a fact. All of Square's artistry replaced with unnecessary embellishments, a unique aesthetic torn apart to make way for more Unity slop.

Mario RPG Remake has problems but those problems were issues in the original game and come from it being a SNES title. The changes greatly improved it, particularly speeding up battles, not requiring you to grind for frog coins and the post game bosses which are probably the best part of the game but sadly quite short.
Well yeah minor visual changes are not nearly as bad as fricking up the atmosphere and camera in a souls game, or turning a raunchy arcade shooter into a reddit TLOU clone

I think it's obvious at this point they're just making Vivian a girl outright in all regions in order to avoid controversy, just like they did with Birdo. It's actually kind of astonishing to me that so many people think that Vivian is going to be trans in this remake. I mean, do these people seriously think that Nintendo, a family friendly gaming company that outright banned the trans flag from being in Smash Ultimate custom stages on the grounds of it being a political statement, would actually have a transgender character in their games in this day and age? As others have noted, the fact that no one previewing the game has been able to confirm that Vivian is trans in the remake indicates that it's most likely not happening, since if it did they'd be the first to trumpet it from the rooftops instead of headcannoning shit from an out-of-context screenshot that doesn't say anything one way or the other about the character's gender

Honestly going to hop off discussions for a few weeks and when the game leak see what dialogue changes happened and decide whether I want the game or not, It's not worth stressing over
I love the parade but I don't think it's necessary for every entry. The atmosphere and vibe TTYD had with it's credits really felt fulfilling to me especially with that song that played with it so I hope it isn't changed even with how simple it probably is to others.

The funniest possibility and it's not out of the question is that the Japanese developers of the game make Vivian female in the Japanese version but then Treehouse changes him to be a boy anyway in English. It's not likely but imagine the wacko twilight zone where the gender flips in both versions.
There has been no implication of it sadly, I was starting to get hope it'd be added to but it's looking doubtful and we also know there are 86 badges in this game, aka only 1 more than the usual and that'd be the old music badge so it's not that either.

The game already had "something similar", it's the yoshi. You move faster while on his back. They've made it easier to switch partners so this will be very easy to use now.

It shouldn't be so bad because they seem to be adding new pipes to the levels to shorten things. One of the videos showed an extra pipe in Hooktail's castle. Very likely it's just a shortcut to move around faster, and I'd bet there's quite a few of these added.
Eh it just makes sense to remake TTYD first because it's better. They aren't chronological so people who play TTYD first are more likely to go on to play 64 after. And if they touch up a bunch of things it wont even be disappointing to them.

TTYD has a better atmosphere, which is what these games are all about. 64 is a great game, but it's a bit bland aesthetically. In particular the Desert, Jungle, Koopa, and Flower levels are just boring to look at and explore. In TTYD even when the level is a bit boring to play, it will at least be fun to explore and interact with the world and characters, kind of the point of an RPG.

This is literally best compromise without going full outline. Devs get to keep their paper aesthetic while the designs don't get butchered.
There is no outline. The characters are just 3D models instead of 2D sprites, so they have an edge that can sometimes be seen depending on the angle they're facing.
The Shadow people were spurned by the Stars in the sky (a sentient godlike race in Mario) so they made their own profane mimickry (the Crystal Stars) for power and balance.
It’s actually a neat little bit of lore, the only fact we get about the Shadow race. I wish there was more.
Paper Mode really shows off how the game could look if it looked less puppet-y and more flat like the original. The left is 1 frame before Mario goes back to being normal from being in Paper Mode, the right is simply normal Mario.

The original also leaned on the paper, it just was more subdued about it, even the Japanese advertising focused on the curses. It's pretty funny how the US commercial led to a lawsuit back then.
The hate for Paper in Paper Mario is misguided. The problem is not that certain elements look like Paper. That can be an appealing art style if done right. The problem is that recent games have used the goofiness of things being made out of Paper to remove seriousness from the story. In Origami KIng, instead of the characters being torturted and mind controlled, they're being folded up into origami. That's fricking stupid and takes so much out of the tone and atmosphere of the game. It would be like instead of characters being turned into pigs in twilight town, if they were being painted white so you couldn't tell them apart. Who could take that seriously? But no, a bush looking like it's made out of cardboard doesn't automatically make a game shitty.
Blame Sticker Star. It's likely why we also got M&L Paper Jam. The world was no longer a Mario story book with some silly 4th wall breaks leaning into the visual style. Now it was literally a paper world.

I think the original genuinely just looks better, the art direction is still perfect and the colors are vibrant and beautiful. Making everything shiny and the colors blending together just takes away from it all. How is this worth halving the framerate?
The grassland segment of the first chapter looks worse because of the change to an actual lighting system. The area is very bright, it's supposed to be and I don't know if you've ever been outside but high brightness desaturates things. With the more realistic lighting, this bright area has lost some of its color. But it's a trade off, and the normal and dark areas look much better with the proper lighting. One positive is that these super brightly lit areas being more desaturated will create a nice contrast with the other parts of the game. Hooktail's castle is gonna feel that much more dark and gloomy after walking around in the super bright grass.
I don't think it needs to look more "real" or have "proper lighting" is the thing, I like the way all the colors pop out at you. I disagree that Boggly Woods looks better, I prefer the way the black and white clashed and feel the new lighting sort of misses the point.

I too prefer the GC one but frankly I don't mind that they gave a different interpretation of it, otherwise there would be no point since I could've just replayed the original.
I think this "remake" (really more like definitive version) looks so much better, the art direction never looked right in the 0.9 version. This definitive version is so vibrant and beautiful. Everything is so shiny and it really comes together, it really adds to paper being the appeal of this series. You can't even notice any framrate lowering because the game looks so great.

An actual direct comparison between TTYD and 64 is not kind to 64. You'd have to be intentionally disingenuous, embelleshing TTYD's flaws while downplaying its strengths, to pretend otherwise. 64 is still a fantastic game in its own right, but TTYD is just flat out a more realized RPG.

It’s a very self-serving move on their part, and like a lot of their decisions this generation, it aims to benefit new consumers over long-term consumers.
From a business point of view, there is certainly money to be made here, and I can’t fault them for that. I just can’t help but think “Wow. Another Paper Mario game that I don’t want, and it’s yet another remake on Switch”. Feels like the old guard is being ignored, once again, and left behind.

Not at all. I would have preferred they ported the first 3 games AND not made them Nintendo Online exclusive crap. Just let people play the originals and charge like $60. Super is basically designed as an action RPG platformer. If they're gonna go through all the work of making a game work with the conventional Paper Mario battle system, they might as well just make a new game.
Between this and SMRPG it does seem like Nintendo is trying to groom studios both new and old into being capable of supplying new Mario RPGs. TTYD makes sense as a foundational starting point (Paper Mario 64 is already on NSO and TTYD is in much higher need of an improvement or remake, on top of treating action commands as a given) and SMRPG is the same, especially when SMRPG itself eventually morphed into both Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi.
This probably all started after AlphaDream died. Mario & Luigi was their excuse for making Paper Mario the way it was from Sticker Star onward
They don't need to groom anything. Origami King is an incredible game that the producers took a massive shit on making it just okay instead. But all they have to do is not take a shit on the hard work of the developers by banning progression systems, normal battle mechanics and original characters and they can make gold. Origami King has probably the worst gameplay of any game I have ever played, and yet I still enjoyed it. That should tell you how talented the artists, musicians and writers are.

No, there wont be any significant new content, because the game unironically doesn't need it and wouldn't benefit from it. The game is already like 30 hours long. By the end of the game I'm always getting a little tired of it. One of the best elements of the Mario RPGs is that they aren't that long.

In the original, everyone refers to Vivian as a boy. If Vivian is meant to be a troony in the original, then the game is directly insulting trannies because no one actually acknowledges him as a girl. There is a risk that Treehouse will bring over Vivian being a boy, but remove all the characters calling him one.

They added a shitload of reflections to the game in general. I feel like they're going to use it to showcase an improved version on the switch 2, because one of the major improvements on that system is the introduction of raytracing hardware. Raytracing is most useful for high quality reflections. Personally I like it because it makes the game look otherworldly, kind of strange and that's something I enjoy. I like when a game looks weird, it makes it stand out, and shiny grass/carpet definitely looks weird.

It depends, TTYD is a GameCube gam3 that for a while has been rare to obtain and hasn't recieved re releases.
Piracy is an issue of a platform failing to provide users means to acquire games and for quite a long time piracy has been the only viable way to play TTYD at all. This remake is only really them trying to penetrate into a new playerbase and see how that goes.
I could see TTYD having a way higher ratio of emulation than a lot of other games, but I do think that even at best it would likely be only around another million playing that hadn't done so on original hardware. If I had to give a better estimate, it would likely be closer to half that number. Does put the game closer to other titles later on, but not by much. You also can't argue that well that the formula shifts marked a huge decrease in players here.
It is worth noting here that more than a lot of series the numbers here do largely correlate with people who owned these consoles. TTYD actually has the best ratio of buyers vs. console owners, although that doesn't help its exposure. It's also likely that the first two games would have sold way better in Japan in particular had their consoles not been disappointing over there in terms of adoption.

But we haven't seen any change that's a hard difference such as the difficulty being lowered or increased, features being removed or added, or any significant change to gameplay beyond some of the casino minigames.

It's a turn based JRPG, I don't think there's actual room in the game for 30fps to 60fps to be noticeable.
It does have frame timed action commands in the battles. Superguarding in particular. The timings for these are going to be altered due to the framerate difference.
Previews have already said guarding was no issue, and in fact some have speculated it's easier now. It looks like they tweaked it to accommodate the drop.

I think the timing changes have been confirmed already, but even then it would be almost a given the timings would likely be at least a little more generous in the remake. It helps a lot that the game has a very linear approach to most of its action commands.

I can easily see this. Keep in mind as well that the power jump from the Gamecube to Switch is surprisingly small. Not like you're going to PS2 to PS5 here. I imagine they had to weigh either doubling down on the graphical updates or keeping the smoother frames, and the former made more sense to make it stand out. It also made it easier to work off the Color Splash and Origami King engine, since those two games were also 30 FPS.
Not a fan of the frame rate drop, but it's not like it was pure laziness. If they do in fact let you go 60 on next console, that would have likely sealed the final decision.

it's still a speculation. Superguarding was a 3 frame window IIRC so it's either gonna be a 2 frame window which is the equivalent of them being a 4 frame window. I don't think that's gonna have that big of an impact.

The two concepts can overlap, especially at the time the original game was written. Vivian came off as a similar approach to Birdo, just a little more sympathetic. As pointed out, Goombella's whole point was likely meant to be a running joke since she way later calls the Shadow Trio "sisters(?)" during the game's ending. It's clear that Vivian was meant to have some kind of gender confusion going on. Otherwise they would have dropped the point after Beldam's insult and maybe the tattle entry.
There's also the matter that if Vivian still identified as male, you would have him kissing on Nintendo's mascot with no kind of shaming or backlash to that. You can argue it's still strange no matter the conclusion, but it makes more sense when you imagine Vivian at least identifying as a girl.

I don't think it will be. Pikmin 4 not only went back to Pikmin 2, it took Pikmin 2 farther with even more complex strategic elements, a more complex progression system and more focus on the mini dungeons. If they were gonna go half way to TTYD then I think they would have made Pikmin 4 half way between 3 and 2, but they basically pretended 3 never happened.

The Switch's last big release was Mario Wonder. A swan song is usually a game that gets overlooked due to timing despite quality backing it, rather than a last minute remake like this or some others coming out now. Out of Nintendo's slate right now, the most obvious one you might call a "swan song" would be the new Endless Ocean if it's actually good. New game in a long dormant series, likely not to sell that much, and could certainly form some cult status around it.

People have noticed there are new pipes in existing levels. Most likely they've cut out a lot of the backtracking by adding pipes between some of these longer sections. I'm just glad that Nintendo has finally started remaking games, with this and Mario RPG. We also did you Link's awakening but that was so low budget and shitty. With Mario RPG and this it's clear they're putting a ton of effort to make it as good as possible. It's important because there are many other Nintendo classics that deserve this kind of remake. Luigi's Mansion and Mario 64 for example. Bring those two up to modern graphics standard, and in Luigi's Mansion's case add some extra content.

Mario RPG Remake has problems but those problems were issues in the original game and come from it being a SNES title. The changes greatly improved it, particularly speeding up battles, not requiring you to grind for frog coins and the post game bosses which are probably the best part of the game but sadly quite short.

The game already had "something similar", it's the yoshi. You move faster while on his back. They've made it easier to switch partners so this will be very easy to use now.
64 had Spike but still had the spindash which is amazing on replays especially. Playing ttyd right after 64 you really feel the absence of spindash.

It shouldn't be so bad because they seem to be adding new pipes to the levels to shorten things. One of the videos showed an extra pipe in Hooktail's castle. Very likely it's just a shortcut to move around faster, and I'd bet there's quite a few of these added.

Yeah because it's more interested in playing with genre. Chapter 3, 4, and 6 have simple, linear maps but are amazing chapters of an RPG

TTYD has a better atmosphere, which is what these games are all about. 64 is a great game, but it's a bit bland aesthetically. In particular the Desert, Jungle, Koopa, and Flower levels are just boring to look at and explore. In TTYD even when the level is a bit boring to play, it will at least be fun to explore and interact with the world and characters, kind of the point of an RPG.

There is no outline. The characters are just 3D models instead of 2D sprites, so they have an edge that can sometimes be seen depending on the angle they're facing.

Paper Mode really shows off how the game could look if it looked less puppet-y and more flat like the original. The left is 1 frame before Mario goes back to being normal from being in Paper Mode, the right is simply normal Mario.

The hate for Paper in Paper Mario is misguided. The problem is not that certain elements look like Paper. That can be an appealing art style if done right. The problem is that recent games have used the goofiness of things being made out of Paper to remove seriousness from the story. In Origami KIng, instead of the characters being torturted and mind controlled, they're being folded up into origami. That's fricking stupid and takes so much out of the tone and atmosphere of the game. It would be like instead of characters being turned into pigs in twilight town, if they were being painted white so you couldn't tell them apart. Who could take that seriously? But no, a bush looking like it's made out of cardboard doesn't automatically make a game shitty.
Blame Sticker Star. It's likely why we also got M&L Paper Jam. The world was no longer a Mario story book with some silly 4th wall breaks leaning into the visual style. Now it was literally a paper world.

I think the original genuinely just looks better, the art direction is still perfect and the colors are vibrant and beautiful. Making everything shiny and the colors blending together just takes away from it all. How is this worth halving the framerate?
Soul vs. Soulless
The grassland segment of the first chapter looks worse because of the change to an actual lighting system. The area is very bright, it's supposed to be and I don't know if you've ever been outside but high brightness desaturates things. With the more realistic lighting, this bright area has lost some of its color. But it's a trade off, and the normal and dark areas look much better with the proper lighting. One positive is that these super brightly lit areas being more desaturated will create a nice contrast with the other parts of the game. Hooktail's castle is gonna feel that much more dark and gloomy after walking around in the super bright grass.
Because when I think Paper Mario I think realism.
I don't think it needs to look more "real" or have "proper lighting" is the thing, I like the way all the colors pop out at you. I disagree that Boggly Woods looks better, I prefer the way the black and white clashed and feel the new lighting sort of misses the point.

I think this "remake" (really more like definitive version) looks so much better, the art direction never looked right in the 0.9 version. This definitive version is so vibrant and beautiful. Everything is so shiny and it really comes together, it really adds to paper being the appeal of this series. You can't even notice any framrate lowering because the game looks so great.

I’m just mad that their response to the blowback wasn’t to develop or, at least, announce that a true TTYD successor is in development. I can play the original game anytime, so I’m not looking for a $60 Switch port (“faithful” remake).

Not at all. I would have preferred they ported the first 3 games AND not made them Nintendo Online exclusive crap. Just let people play the originals and charge like $60. How freaking hard is that to do? If they want to make a new game in the same vain as rhe first 2 games they should have done it instead of remaking TTYD. Anyone hoping they will I am afraid are misguided. Show me a new Paper Mario like the first two games Nintendo and I may buy it. But for now all I see is a cash grab similar to the RPG remake.
Don't get me wrong, its better than nothing (and I actually liked the RPG remake) but again I would have preferred straight ports. Don't fix what isn't broken.
