What drives these publishers to such moronation?

In case of Battletech, Microsoft owns the IP so they'd have to pay them a cut and corporate greed says this a big no-no.

        Microsoft doesn't own Battletech

I thought the same thing at first. Microsoft owns all Battletech and Mechwarrior video game rights. And licenses it to HBS and PG respectively.
Then Topps owns the rights to the Battletech books and tabletop games, and then licenses it out to Catalyst Game Labs.

They own the vidya rights but not the IP as a whole.

They do, they are IP squatters

They are anything BUT squatters, they have already announced 4 Mechwarrior projects in development, one already came out (Dragon's Gambit), the Clans are next, then we get MW6 and MWO2 down the line.

Who wants this trope? Do gamedevs even bother to ask who they are making these garbage ass games for anymore?

          Anonymous

The game itself is the last thing on their minds during development. They are making games solely to hear from others in the office and their Twitter echo chamber how much they're winning and dunking on the patriarchy, Nazi's, trolls, etc while ignoring and brushing off any and all criticism.

i blame execs for no longer preventing moronic developers from making shit games, i don't think they're responsible for any of the moronic design decisions made for the lamplighters league

        >moronic design decisions made for the lamplighters league
What decisions were that? All I know is they wanted to make Battletech 2 and execs said no, and those same execs didn't seem to spend a penny advertising Lamplighters.

xcom clone set in a pulp setting with no roleplaying, no custom character, no skill trees or equippable gear, everything is brown, took 4 years and tens of millions to develop, worst stealth system ever devised by man, shit performance because it's blatantly based on the same codebase that shadowrun was. just the ones off the top of my head, there are probably more

            >xcom clone set in a pulp setting
I got excited for a second, then I read the rest of your post. How could they leave out character development AND custom characters? If all your soldiers are premade characters, they should have personal skills and personal equipment.

they've got shotguns and pistols by default you just can't equip different shotguns or whatever

you have some weird card perks system traight out of some bargain bn roguelite, like +30% crit chance, health doesn't regen

You mean you draw random buffs and debuffs every mission?

                Anonymous

when you level up a char, you get a random card and extra card slots and you can equip any card to any char with free slots. it's very dumb and game-y. might not work exactly like that, but it basically does.

HBS Battletech wasn't very good. It lives on mods alone. It needs to get closer to Megamek. Their approach to stability for example is completely out of line.

Losing control of your company to outside forces is always bad be it other companies or shareholders.
