about $20 for stash tabs which are required for using the marketplace which is required for endgame. But you can install the game and go through the story and get like 30 hours of gameplay for free.

      Anonymous

Requirement is not absolute, you can play SSF, some builds (summoners) don't use a lot of items, so you can fare well (means clearing all endgame content) with 4 default tabs. A lot of builds require trading though, otherwise you have to spend years.

        Anonymous

You honestly need to be very experienced to get by in SSF with only having the default stash tabs. Just think about how many slots are going to be taken up by shit like currency orbs or stash. You won't have much room to save up base items for harvest and recombinators.

Yeah seriously imagine being a new player and going SSF. Fricking nightmare. Anyone who says the game is f2p-friendly is out of their fricking mind.

          Anonymous

I don't know, 4 standard tabs is like 1 quad tab - it's a lot of space. You don't hoard things like you would normally do: use your orbs and craft your items, don't hoard too much shit like Heist gear for swapping etc. My biggest gripe with default tabs would be that you can't set affinity to that (for those who don't know, "affinity" is when you ctrl+click an item, it automatically sorts itself into a pre-selected tab of your choice). I have done 36+ challenges on like 2 leagues with default tabs only, back in Warbands/Tempest days.

Yeah seriously imagine being a new player and going SSF. Fricking nightmare. Anyone who says the game is f2p-friendly is out of their fricking mind.

It's a nightmare even for experienced players. I have tried once - never again.

    >is it truly f2p
you CAN play the game completely for free. the only thing that money affects is stash space. that said, in the end game stash space can quickly become annoying to manage if you don't purchase a stash expansions, especially as a new player with no real grasp on what items are important and what items can be gotten rid of. selling items is also a huge hassle without premium stash tabs
    >are all the armors still the same boring/trash looking unless you pay $60 for a good looking one?
no, there are quite a few good looking armor pieces that can be found and equipped, but you are unlikely to put together a nice looking set without using skin transfers/filling in the gaps with mtx (both of which cost money)
all that having been said, the game is still my favorite game in the genre. give it a shot without paying, and if you like it spend ~$20 on stash space to smooth things out for you

Yeah its good. I even liked the writing, just finished this tonight. About to start end game. You should spend money on tabs, everything else is cosmetic. Stash is pretty generous by default though.

Warframe makes four times what GGG makes without being scummy. The most expensive thing in Warframe you can buy that you can't earn are $50 cosmetics. That's $260 less than this single set of armor.
Lower prices = more people buying them = more money. GGG should try it sometime instead of selling exclusively to the whaliest of whales.

If this is just a fox and grapes situation, the only reason you want this set is because of it's unobtainable to you, at which point if everyone had it for free, you wouldn't even want it.

They're upgrading the default armor in the game for PoE 2, where for the most part it looks better than current paid MTX.
Also adding a dying system so you can at least match your assortment of pots and pans armor.

Yes, but you can get (rather limited) cosmetics via challenges

Game used to be really great but I'd say it's become a bloated mess, kind of like WoW, full of old content and mechanics that are totally unnecessary.
Old skills occasionally get revamped but largely lay forgotten in favor of the meta and the fresh new things, the game has suffered from players optimizing the fun out of it and now the meta is essentially spamming near screen clearing single skills then spamming your movement skill to get to the next pack, then repeat.
I would say to wait for PoE 2.0 and see if that is better, though it's likely the game will succumb to it's vices and be not much different then. Some of my info may be outdated, I haven't played the game in a while, and for good reason.

it is NOT free to play and don't let anyone fricking tell you otherwise because they are full of fricking shit.

    A. To play a trade league you HAVE to have premium stash tabs to be able to sell anything.

    B. You will hit a wall with almost any build that isn't boring ass homosexual zizaran meta requiring you to get exalted orbs in one way or another to beat content.

The only way to consider this game f2p is if you are a solo-self-found player where nothing really matters.

SSF means you just only use the stuff and currency you find yourself and don't trade at all. Though if you're not a nolife in the game this means you'll hit walls when you start needing better gear and you won't have the shortcut of just trading with other folks

Just started playing this a few days ago, already plugged in 25 hours so far. Just made it to Part 2 and I'm enjoying it. Been playing as a necromancer and this game fulfills my desires of having an undead army and actually be strong enough to command it. Pretty good/10. Supposedly once i get to the "endgame"(whenever that may be) I'll be able to swap my gems into summoning a horde of spooky lightning ghosts. I like how the only thign that's really outside of 'F2P' is more banb space and pure cosmetics. The cosmetics are definitely the whaler's harpoons, but I've considered picking up a couble of tabs on sale.

Enjoy it what you can, Anon.
If you manage to stick it out into endgame (which is at the end of Part 2), you'll start to realize just how much of a problem F2P bank space is. You'll probably still have fun, but it'll shift your perspective a bit, cause the "endgame" is the starting line for most veteran players. They binge through the Acts as fast as they can (10 hours or less, as little as 4 or so) to start the endgame.

      Meh... I clearly jest.
Point is some people will splurge huge amounts of cash on seemingly worthless stuff (and then complain about the economy).

    >is it truly f2p
No. It's pay for convenience, aka don't bother playing end game if you don't at least own all the important tabs and few premium tabs. It's like 40 bucks to get all the important ones (map, currency, fragment) and then few premium tabs to sell items. However once you've gotten all the important stash tabs, you really don't have to spend any more money on the game. All the recent specific stash tabs they've made have all been useless. Outside the three important ones I listed, I'd only get divination and essence but even without those two you can get by easily, just means you have to sell/use them more quickly.

As for cosmetics, most rares look hideous. There are some nice looking uniques but no set items like in Diablo. There are uniques that share the same aesthetic but those are a thing of the past at this point and most uniques that have a "cosmetic set" are pretty outdated at this point in terms of power. Armour mtx is hilariously overpriced, however GGG recently gave out two armor sets for free if you did the challenges, which might be a sign of things to come because this is the first time they gave full sets as rewards for playing the game. Also if you plan on buying a lot points to spend on the store, there is really no reason to not get one of the supporter packs. They match the price with points and you get some mtx on top of it.

Some players have lived off their initial stash tabs successfully, although mule characters may be needed. A fair few specialized stash tabs do make a world of difference for quality of life however and premium ones especially make trade in non-SSF leagues a lot easier to initiate. Armor MTX is also expensive, but at least both of these things do have semi-regular sales at worst; the latter is on a rotation and per-league supporter packs (outside of this current league) usually come with an armor set + points.

With that said, despite actually making some good changes to the endgame for once, PoE is also in a pretty shitty state currently where it's more or less a streamer game.

PoE is a israelite grindset simulator. Everything you do is to make more money, reinvest it to more gear to make more money until your build is complete and you stop playing for 3 months.

Why the frick would I play SFF? It's so much easier to just buy what you need.
SFF should be uncancelable and have increased quantity and possibly other extra ways to actually snipe key uniques

why play the game if you're just going to buy every item? I've got a buddy that plays like that and all he does is scour trade for bargains he can resell and trawls through youtube for currency farming strats. He's like crafted one entire item in his life

            I craft if I can, If I can't, I buy. Can't really craft uniques.

Why? Unless you're talking about Diablo 2, it's a shittier game.

              poe have two modes
              - original poe ssf and ssf hc leagues.
              - rmt league(sf and hc).
The fact that nothing falls on the SSF is a myth. You can look at the poe ninja of ssf players with mageblade.
Softcore is just a dump for casuals and scammers like you.

Yes, my friend got a raw HH drop this league(funnily the league in which it's "cheap"). Friends are also one of the reasons why we play tradeleague.

homie what, ssf was self imposed because there was only trade league in "original poe"

Not F2P at all. You need to spend like $200 in tabs and cool MTX so your character doesn't look like a hobo.

      Anonymous

All you need is that 5 dollar "hide mtx" mtx and you apply it to your chest on Templar and play literally a hobo without pants.

It's so obvious when you people from the general crawl out of your board to make these threads. It's usually so nice to talk about the game in Ganker until you people show up and spam your shittiness that makes Ganker look sane by comparison.

one of the most boring games i've played, feels like a joke with a ton of people in on to get other people to try and waste their time with it

*WARNING* Do not play Nerd Casino. Going to an actual casino is frankly a better use of your time, much less playing a real videogame with actual challenge. This has been a public service announcement.

Depends on what type of player you are and how deep you are planning to go with your builds.

plan on just beating the 10 acts and maybe getting to yellow or red map?
you would be stupid to not f2p.

plan on doing a 300ex meta building and push the uber uber content that only .01% of the player base will ever see?
probably gonna need some stash tabs

as for cosmetics, its not p2w its p2notlooklikeshit, but that's a personal opinion

That's egregious enough for me when you factor in the stash tabs.

what your character looks like doesn't really matter since your abilities will spam the screen anyway and are mostly what you're looking at.

i only regret spending time on two games and poe of one of them. don't play this piece of shit garbage game. the piece of scum developers don't even think of it as a game instead it's a skinner box trying to find new victims and keep the whales in their sunk cost mouse wheel.

the developer actually releases piece of shit skills which don't work and are garbage just so people use them and then have to reroll to try and inflate user numbers. people aren't as mentally moronic as the developer so they just quit instead though. the game has 200+ skill gems and pretends like it's got some complex shit going on, but 190 of the skill gems are absolute fricking dog shit trash which is simply wasting your time if you use it.

they don't even have the fricking decency to try and improve them instead they regularly gut them making them worse hoping people will invest more time into their skinner box. absolutte piece of shit developers.

Same but I think the monetization is fine, I spent 20 dollars over 500 hours. The game sucks because the genre sucks and is literally a retirement home casino for people too bad to reach diamond in LoL or Dota or CS.

the genre doesn't suck the piece of shit slime developers who try and make skinner box do. d2 developers didn't think "how can we make a skinner box and steal peoples time from them???". they genuinely just wanted to make a cool game and though the randomized items/loot stuff could make it exciting and fun.

look at the elements d2 had in it and compare it to the piece of shit garbage games the trash made afterwards.

where is the hostile ability? the ability to join others games and kill and fight them was a core mechanic of d2, but all the piece of shit developers who try and milk the genre ignored it. when blizzard north was working on the actual sequel to d2 they were making an mmo with human interaction not some solo play skinner box micro solo/4 man instanced dungeon loot casino.

It has one of the best monetization systems on the market right now. You can play the game without spending anything, but eventually once you play the game enough you will need a stash tab or two. But that only means you drop 20$ and you're good pretty much forever. Cosmetic microtransactions are on an expensive side, but they're fricking cosmetic, so who fricking cares.

    No and yes.
Progress in poe is gated behind hundreds of fragments that drop one at a time and you need 4 to 300 of them to do anything useful, so they'll slowly accumulate and fill your stash making it impossible to store much of anything else. Every few months another 3-5 fragment recolors are added just to frick with you and push you to buying more stash tabs.

A currency tab and a map tab are the bare fricking minimum required to play poe past completion of the campaign and they cost $25-$30 together if memory serves
