People are gunna go fricking nuts when they start figuring out the combo system and movement. You can go REALLY fast.
It's literally Mario Odyssey mechanics but even more fleshed out and with crazy momentum
This game will be an ultimate filter for movement brainlets, anyone who actually plays video games will fricking love this shit
Okay, so this game is basically to Sonic Adventure what Hat In Time is to Mario 64. I would definitely recommend and I'll be dissapointed if Ganker sleeps on this. Very good game so far, stuff like this should be encouraged.
>Glorified flying and/or infinite wall climbing by spamming a bunch of moves making the actual level design redundant
Yawn. I fricking knew it was going to be more of this type of trash

Is this board so goddamn useless and lazy now that they're really not going to play this?
Watched Argick (sonic the hedgehog speed runner) for like 2 minutes. The game was sponsoring him to play it. He died 8 times trying to make two simple jumps. Either he's trash or they are both trash.

It doesn’t look like the Genesis era in 3D, it looks like the artwork from Sonic Jam/Sonic the Screensaver/Harmony, which is overly bright and colourful because they were used for the covers of Sega’s internal magazine.
In terms of the games themselves, level had well constructed palettes, usually with two, sometimes three, main colours, which isn’t what you see here.
This is closest in look to Oil Ocean Zone, but that’s is nowhere near as bright/bold as here.
What is the point of the citizens that say one liners? I tried reading most of their dialog in the first zone but after that I realized it was killing the flow/a waste of time. It seems like one of those things that really didn't need to be in the game.
>i don't like how everything looks
This is one of the best looking games I've seen recently, (aside from the character designs), what are you on?
>What is the point of the citizens that say one liners?
Just a goofy thing to see when you zip by them, apart from the ones with little minigames and things.
How can he say that, when majority of the actions in the webm looks nothing like the actions from Sonic. Like, he posted a bunch of Yoyo movement. Sonic doesn't do anything like that.
Also, A Hat in Time feels very different compared to Mario 64 mechanically speaking. They only share similarities in presentation.
He's just wrong. Spark the Electric Jester 2 or 3 are basically Sonic Adventure. Penny's Big Breakdown or whatever has nothing to do with Sonic. I think because the game is flopping they're just trying to get people to buy it by hyping it up to a beloved game.
Where do they even compare their game to Sonic? The morons in this thread do not count.

I'm saying people in this thread are making the comparison to help the game. It doesn't look like it plays anything like Sonic Adventure.I think it looks fun but if Mariel Cartright did work on it then that's an auto pass for me.
Even if the game is good. It sets a bad precedent to buy it. It was clear the developer made a conscious decision to make penny a troony character. I will not play the game until that gets fixed.
I just wont play a game with an ugly character. Double down with an ugly androgynous character that looks like a troony. Not my fault you made an ugly character.
the visuals are fine but i will admit it's moronic for indies to not make their female protags sexy or at least very conventionally cute like hat kid if the protag is a child or else you miss out out on free marketing especially if you are just gonna shadow drop the game on the same day as Splatoon 3 dlc. penny is cute just not in the same way as hat kid is.

>why is the character in a colorful child friendly game not a busty bimbo?! what the frick?!
>why is the character in a colorful child friendly game not a busty bimbo?! what the frick?! >Coomerism is a disease. Also penny is pretty cute
i said she was cute and my point was sex sells. colorful child friendly games aren't immune to the benefits of semi coomer designs.
lmao, what the frick. level design is non existent.
it is genuinely kind of crazy to think that 3D platformers have still yet to evolve enough to have actually thoughtful or complex level design and everybody is still fine with it. When it's probably the genre with the best potential for creative, or complex level design, being centered completely around movement in 3D space and...it's always just for stupid arbitrary tricks and shit.
either gamers are just fricking stupid and disappointing or...gamers are just fricking stupid and narrow minded.
I refunded the game.
I didn't like the in-level collection mechanics as for me it breaks my attention from enjoying the level to go hunting for collectibles. (I have the same problem in all Mario games).
I wish it focused on speed and the combo system for point rankings instead of adding this Mario 3D World BS.
The character design is awful, especially the main character.
I'm not too fond of the JSR minigame you play when finishing a level. The controls for it are janky and the animations look awful as well as being a pacebreaker. It also makes you feel like shit failing it even when you had a great run through the rest of the level.
The world looks like visual clutter at all times.
$30 is too steep for me with all the problems listed above.
----------
Otherwise, the gameplay is fun and while the controls take a while to get used to it was overall nice.
I liked that level breaking and experimentation in this game made me feel smart and had me interact with the level design rather than in Project Rascal where I just felt I was missing out on the majority of the level and flying across all of the challenges.
>Black person you played for Iess than 2 hours and think your opinion on the game is worth anything?
Worth a negative review on the game I guess.
If they lower the price on a sale or fix many of the issues I listed, (giving an option to disable the JSR minigame, fixing Penny's design with mods, etc...) I think I'll change it.
But for now....yeah......sadly it'll have to be negative.
>It's not Unity or Unreal so mods might not be something that happens, with how underwhelming the launch was
Yeah I agree that you should NEVER review games with the idea that ""mods will fix it"", especially indie games.
Look at "Fraymakers" That whole shitty game was built on "Let us release a shit product and the community will finish it for us".
Indies don't have the luxury of having a modding scene unless it sells extremely well.
I just think that Penny's game came out needing a new coat of polish and options to disable bad ideas like the very very finicky JSR minigame.
>I wish it focused on speed and the combo system for point rankings instead of adding this Mario 3D World BS
It... does. There's a whole time attack mode.
>It does both. You’re free to go back and collect or time attack later.
Ennnnh! Wrong answer!
So for everyone playing the game we are forced to come across collectibles that break the game's pacing dramatically, and then if we choose not to engage people are made to feel like shit when it shows that you did a bad job and get a worse rating due to not engaging with their shit mechanic?
Ouch.
But I can waste time and go into Time attack right? To replay already beaten levels instead of enjoying story mode and playing new levels.

Pure time will only crank your score up so far, you get huge bonuses for completing levels with all of the collectibles and optional challenges

On top of that, a lot of the mid-level challenges are on a timer anyway so you have to play quickly as a matter of course

>we are forced to come across collectibles that break the game's pacing dramatically
This is a huge overstatement on at least two different levels. You're not forced to get collectibles, that's why getting them gives you bonuses, and a decent chunk of them are timed challenges which encourage quick movement in accordance with the rest of the game's pacing. I don't know how you've managed to rationalise a game having a feature that you claimed to want and which wasn't in the game as "wasting time" now that you've realised it does have it either.
>Hat In Time
I admit I've only played 20 minutes of this years ago when I was half out of my mind in pain but I didn't feel it. What exactly does it do good? The mafia town map felt too big for its own good and by the time I reached the stage(?) 3 boss(it was like this big mafioso guy) I felt very disappointed with the game.
Downloadable installer that I can keep forever and works offline, why else?
Also, regional pricing. Fricking hell, Evening Star - they want to really emulate SEGA and frick latam while at it.
>Downloadable installer that I can keep forever and works offline, why else?
Do you know what steamless is? The appeal of steam DRM is that its not invasive and immediately crack-able, which reduces the usage genuinely bad DRM like Denuvo. The problem with GOG is that they don't have your best interests in mind, they are actively funding people shitting up video games, they are getting hosting sites taken down, and people say to ignore because its all still clustered under one site, but that singular database isn't impervious, it can and will go down some day. I hope you aren't actively funding the destruction of video games because your a turd worlder.
>Still being a GoGgay in anno domini 2011+13
They quite literally rugpulled on the DRM free thing as of like a month ago moron-kun. Pirate or go with steam
Skullgirls was kind of already shit, it was a israeli grappler player's bad rip off of MvC with guilty gear mechanics hamfisted into it. There's a reason no MvC players stuck with Skullgirls, it was always forced.
How is that fishing for replies? It's a legitimate concern and it didn't derail the thread in any way. I'm personally excited for the game and I want to play it.
She was an artist and animator on Skullgirls who was later part of a secret conspiracy to throw the autistic head programmer and owner of Lab Zero out of the company. It didn't work because he is the owner of Lab Zero People naturally assume she and her peers are also responsible for the removal of Alex Ahad, the lead artist of Skullgirls.
She was the lead animator for skullgirls. Long story short, her and another c**t that worked at lab zero conspired to remove the lead programmer and take over the company. Their stunt basically bankrupted the company and they were fired. Last I heard they were suing him for wrongful termination but he has all of their slack chat logs where they are openly conspiring against him
That's legit upsetting, already bough it yesterday because I wanted to support the Mania lads but only just now found out that that prostitute's involved with it. It fricking sucks that with modern games you need to go full autistic detective mode just to find out if your purchase supports some subhuman piece of shit in the process.
They drop the game with the only ad being a Nintendo PARTNER Direct during the morning work hours. No one knows this shit is out. It worked for Hi-Fi Rush because that shit was on Gamepass
>discussion pre-release >"the design is perfectly fine you braindead coomer morons." >discussion post-release >"AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE PLEASE PLAY MY- I MEAN THIS GAME"
The design isn't an issue imo, its the mangled surprise launch on a game that should have received more advertising/showcase spots and a demo prior to release
I suppose if you like Super Lucky Tale type slop, you'll enjoy this. I'm getting a refund on it. This art and level design is so lazy and cheap, I hate it. It's hideous. She does control good, but the levels are awful and like I said, bland, uninspired art direction that makes you feel like you're playing some cheap McDonald's rip off of Mario 3D World. Would not recommend to anyone who isn't a soft casual.
I feel like this is a case where the game has great movement and advanced mechanics but is stuck inside a literal Fisher-Price setting made for little kids to be able to beat it.
3D platformers are fundamentally afraid to work with negative space and hard filter players.
yeah as I was saying before, this game's biggest flaw and the one I noticed the moment the trailer aired is that it looks really, really bad.
people don't remember Sonic Adventure for how it played, they remember the art style, the art direction, the settings, and setpieces. Penny is the opposite. Excellent, fluid game that has one foot in the mobile game art door
Screenshots like that remind me that I should probably buy this game now and not wait for sale. I love these 3D platformers and they've definitely become very niche. I wonder why people have moved on from one of the staples of video games.
It's unironically casuals, I thought everyone knew this? Karen wants something she can tap at on her phone for 5 minutes while she's on the bus, not a sit-down-and-concentrate game that will punish you for not grasping its mechanics
You say this but then Elden Ring sells like crazy. Even Lies of P I'm sure did very well. Also 3D platformers aren't really that hard if you don't go for all the secrets or complete the secret levels. The latest Mario games are all piss easy except for the last worlds that require you to complete the game almost 100%.
yes anon, people played Elden Ring aka the biggest release by the most popular studio right now in the world
That's like responding to someone saying "Why did fantasy movies stop getting made?" with "Well Lord of the Rings sold like crazy!"
I only said it as a counter-argument to what you posted about everyone now being a casual with no interest for real games

I think the number of hardcore gamers is about the same percentage of the population it always was, just there's this massive tumour of phone games attached to the industry now so it looks smaller
Also, you know, more games to play overall so people are spread more thin
Balatro is just unabashed digital crack, it's barely a game. It's gambling on top of gambling with a sleek coat of paint. I'm not saying that to disparage the game, but it firmly belongs in the same category of game as, say, Vampire Survivors - an addictive time-waster that doesn't really offer you anything other than raw dopamine.
I haven't played Penny's. I didn't even think it was out, actually.
>Literally zero marketing not even teasing >Shadowdrops on a frick switch event despite that the fact that tendies only give a shit about tendie games >Doesn't do well
Closed doors imminent
Alright, beat the game here. Here's my thoughts on the game, having glided through all of the levels. >Boss fights aren't very good. Like, okay at best. I thought Christian and co. would realize working on Sonic that bosses in platformers, with the typical approach, are rarely if ever fun. Mr. Q especially was pretty annoying. You could strip all of them from the game and it would probably be better for it. >For time attack, the "Restart" option having to go through the intro card each time is annoying. The game is clearly very capable of instantly restarting a level, why doesn't the Restart option do that instead? Sonic Mania had a great restart system with its time attack, why doesn't Penny's? >Peel outs on the yoyo seems nigh useless. If it actually gave you a significant burst of speed, it could be used for cool skips, but as is it gives you nothing more than what an air dash gives you, even charging it for a while. >The camera can be very irritating at points. If you're trying to skip large portions of the level, the camera goes all over the place and can be very hard to manage. This is kind of an inherent flaw with a Kirby and the Forgotten Land-esque camera, I suppose. >The score mechanics seem purposeless and lacking skill. If you want to get a high score, you can indefinitely chain rides and other stuff to get a super high score. If it's trying to ape off of something like Tony Hawk, that game has a time limit so you can only get so much score in a period of time. >The Busker Bonuses are annoying wastes of times and don't ever get difficult. You're essentially punished with an annoying minigame the higher you go on the platform. >You should be able to grab items/powersups just by walking into them, because yoyoing them can be tough. >Inability to skip cutscenes at points (like some bosses, for example).
I do have a lot of praise for the movement. The yoyo swing has a lot of depth, based on your velocity going into it. Riding is fun. But there are issues.
>You should be able to grab items/powersups just by walking into them, because yoyoing them can be tough.
This is easily my main complaint, holy frick I don't like how that works at all.
>You should be able to grab items/powersups just by walking into them, because yoyoing them can be tough.
That sounds like something that shouldn't have made it into the final product at all
>that pic
Did they make the game look so amateurish on purpose? I mean, I can understand the art style being weird on purpose but that UI looks just plain lazy
It definitely feels like one of those platformers where the bosses are there because the game is expected to have boss battles rather than because the devs were actually interested in created boss battles for this game's mechanics Makes you wonder why they had a special animated trailer designed solely to hype them up. At least they had good themes except for Taboo lolololol
you're not the only one anon. Happened to me and some friends as well. Even with another controller I had the same problem. And it happens with the other buttons as well.
Couple that with the wonky collisions physics and it can make for a frustrating experience. Hope they fix those real quick.
As someone who loves all Sonic games and Spark and Rollin' Rascal this game is infuriating to play. The mechanics do not flow well with the level design.
No? You can definitely suck and get through the game, theres just a higher skill ceiling and it doesnt make you feel like your good even if youre bad, theres way too many games like that already.
Movement feels great and I love the aesthetic but man the PC version is very buggy so far. I've clipped into several ledges and in 1-2 I merged with the wall and slowly slid out of bounds
Definitely wanna play the game so I won't refund but I may wait and see if this stuff gets patched first
>Iizuka basically told Whitehead to frickoff when they wanted to do Sonic Mania 3D so they decided to go off and make this while Sonic fans got stuck with the dogshit Superstars and Apple exclusive slop.
Okay, so this game is basically to Sonic Adventure what Hat In Time is to Mario 64. I would definitely recommend and I'll be dissapointed if Ganker sleeps on this. Very good game so far, stuff like this should be encouraged.

his post is moronic, this game is closer in gameplay to mario odyssey than it is to any Sonic game. the yoyo even functions exactly like the hat in that game even giving you powerups by grabbing onto stuff, also alot of the level design are lifted straight from kirby like the cannons you have to light and race to before they go off. the only aspect that is similar to Sonic is the rolling but even that you could argue is closer in control to Odyssey than shit like SRB2 or any of those other Sonic fangames.

how the frick did I not know this.
Thanks, will be shaving off like ten seconds on my route now.
Alright, got second place again. I'll see if I can get a .webm of a run like that. Maybe then I'll actually start time attacking other levels, lol.

It's mind boggling. I'm probably the target audience for something like this but the "surprise release" is just so weird I'm going to hold off for a bit. All the marketing for this game was botched
Pizza Tower is kind of a comparable indie game and it marketed itself way better despite not getting mainstream press
pizza tower, while a great game in itself, is carried by its art and animation, without them it would've been one of these niche platformers like garlic
I don't agree but it certainly was SOLD by it's art direction, and Penny is going to only lose sales because it's art direction. The cutscenes especially look unappealing.
I'm the target audience, and I learned about this game because I came here to discuss the Elden Ring + Shin Megami Tensei announcements but decided to look at the catalog first.
There's a reason half of Sonic Mania's credits are for marketing guys. Without SEGA these guys fricking suck ass at the actually getting people to buy your game part
It got the most advertising on Nintendo Directs, also the fact that it's a cartoony 3D platfomrer makes me think it's a safe bet that it sold the most on Switch.
Refunded this game after about an hour of playing it. The controls are trash. Going fast while riding the yoyo makes your turning shit so you can't maintain it at all. There's no way to satisfyingly maintain momentum while also being precise with your movements. It's so sluggish.
Im only on 1-3 but so far I've been more frustrated than I am having fun. I think it's just me not quite coming to grips with how this game controls but I also noticed that I have an awful tendency of overshooting myself and falling down into pits. My depth perception is ass but I also notice that there's no drop-shadow in this game, it's been making it hard to accurately see where I'm landing.
>My depth perception is ass but I also notice that there's no drop-shadow in this game
this gets way way worse in later stages, I normally don't have a problem with that and im still undershooting/overshooting shit all the time
Damn that's unfortunate, I tried one of the star globe stages and I immediately noticed how badly I need a drop shadow, platforming on any thin platforms feels like a gamble for no good reason.

The combat is really, really annoying. I get that the idea is just that you're supposed to run through everything but if they didn't want me to stick around anywhere they shouldn't have put in so much NPC dialog
How long do we have to wait until we can be honest with this? The game isn't very good.
If it weren't from the Sonic Mania devs it would be getting as much attention as Super Lucky's Tale. It's kind of sad that this exists because it removes any doubt that Sonic Mania being good was 90% because old Sonic games were good and 10% because the devs were good.
The character designs are AWFUL.
Exploration is completely ignored in favor of speed (Sonic didn't start doing this until 06)
The yoyo mechanics aren't satisfying and ultimately just bolster a character that boring to control
It's glitchy as FRICK
I'm really disappointed, I wanted this to be a big middle finger to Sega but it's making me believe in a Sonic curse
>Exploration is completely ignored in favor of speed
Sounds like a big plus to me, I'm sick of running at the camera and jumping outside of every fixed shot just so I don't miss one semi-important collectible every 30 attempts, looking at you Hi Fi Rush .
Don't be so obtuse, "From the developers of Sonic Mania" was the game's slogan. >But they didn't say it would play like Sonic!!!!
If a movie trailer says "From the director of this horror movie and that horror movie" it's probably not a romcom
if a trailer said "from a director of a horror movie" and then it shows footage of a comedy I would assume the guy is trying something new. none of the gameplay trailers made it seem like it was gonna be anything like the 3D Sonic games

What they showed is similar to Sonic, in that it’s a 3D platformer. So, a better movie analogy would be switching from jump scare horror to psychological horror.

I haven't played this game but from everything I've seen it's not trying to be Sonic. There's a clear influence but it's not like Spark or Freedom Planet which are more like elevated fangames, not just wearing the influence on their sleeve, the entire outfit is the influence.

It was clear to me as well, but it’s not as if it was completely removed from Sonic, and a lot of people interpreted it as a Sonic-like game.
Don't be so obtuse, "From the developers of Sonic Mania" was the game's slogan. >But they didn't say it would play like Sonic!!!!
If a movie trailer says "From the director of this horror movie and that horror movie" it's probably not a romcom
This game is riding off the coat Tails of Mania's success. I think the devs also definitely have inflates egos with this marketing stunt they just pulled. Not many indie games get the red carpet rolled out for them on their first big project like Evening Star did, and these guys decide to just not give any information out on the release. It's like they're expecting people to just buy it.
>I think the devs also definitely have inflates egos
They absolutely do. As you've already said, they got the red carpet rolled out for them. At just about every turn, they've gotten special treatment and pats on the ass for their debut game (funding from Take Two, multiple Nintendo Direct appearances, etc.). Mania's glowing reviews and the weird worship around Christian Whitehead don't help either, I'm sure.
I saw one of the developers bragging recently about how the game "weaves a new path forward instead of looking to the past" or whatever, ignoring the fact that the entire look of Penny's Big Breakaway is imitating airbrushed artwork of the 90s and even something as basic as the way the screen fades is copy-pasted from the old Sonic games. They just come across as weirdly ego-centric
>Exploration is completely ignored in favor of speed
I haven't touched the game yet, but from what I've seen the game has fixed camera pathing, which doesn't favor exploration.
lol. I was 100% expecting this. The trailers didn't lie, they delivered the game they promised. The only thing I can complain about this game is how amateurish it looks, but that was also sort of notable in the trailer so I can't say I didn't expect it.
I've experienced a couple of collision bugs so far. Stuff like getting stuck on a wall or falling through the ground because I went into a corner wrong. Not really a huge deal to me because I give indies far more slack in this regard
What I really wanna know is if dual stick or button is the way to play. Pic unrelated.
I do enjoy how everytime a game like this comes out it just exposes how many frickers on Ganker are underages that probably have the sharty open on another tab >how dare you enjoy a game right now that is not Elden Ring
Im in world 7 and there's to key things that are really dragging the entire game down for me.
1) pennys movement both aerial and grounded is sluggish. She takes a while to hit top running speed and it can clip her jumps. It's very common to not be able to thread penny onto a platform expecting more precision and needing to use the air stall to fix even the most basic jumps
2) The weight/sluggishness of the roll. It feels great in the early levels to drift around obstacles but around world 6 it becomes too much of a detriment to use in the tighter platforming sections. If your angle when landing is off be even a hair (and it will be when the camera is sitting awkward angles, you just go flying off platforms without enough range to correct it without careening in the other direction.
The game clearly values fluid speedy movement but it's too much of a detriment to play fast and loose. It's so frustrating. I really want to love this game but the level design is really asking for too much precision out of the character controller. Anyone else in the late game finding this?
This game is really perfect I had it on my playlist for a while now Ganker is too busy playing the FOTM game to actually play good games and then wonder why there aren't any good games to play. If you're thinking of buying the game do it I was hesitant too I'm having a blast.
Why on earth they decided to launch this without a demo for next fest is beyond me, also picked a terrible day for a launch alongside the Splatoon expansion.
I've played the first level for like 8 hours straight and I'm still only in the top 10 for speedrunning it
how fricking autistic are the people playing this game
Is my game broken? Why does this thing move at a pace that seems like a third of even realistic, non-vidya running? Jumps barely clear a single gap. What the frick
They were hoping the game would be carried by its gameplay and “Made by Sonic Mania.” Everything else about this game is a cluster frick. I would get it, but it’s so ugly that I don’t want to look at it. And with the way things are now, I’d rather save my $30 on something else.
I've been here since 2006. Things are genuinely really bad right now. I think moderation staff needs to be canned, the culture they've created here is terrible.
We had multiple times for Ganker to show how bad is at games, why do you realize it only now?
Just from the top of my head: >Marauders in doom eternal >That moronic grill in elden ring
Any indie with rankings like furi or pizza tower
the gameplay looks good but the character design is kind of off-putting. It's not as bad as Wargroove but it's still pretty bad. Instead of being aggressively ugly it's mostly "what the frick am I looking at?" with a hint of ugly bordering on uglycute but not quite getting there. I might wait for a sale, or maybe someone to mod in a different player model, or maybe just ignore it when if Penny was actually appealing I would buy this instantly. When I say appealing, I'm not even talking about coom or cutesy pedobait. Just something more pleasant to look at than whatever this is.
it does help, more than I thought it would actually. I think darker hair would help too, but even still I don't care for the hairstyle or several parts of the outfit
Color swaps ain't fixing this. The whole design is unsalvageable.
And only a few short months ago, another jester girl took the internet by storm.
Penny is just a mess of a design. She looks more like and Englishmen wig wearing ass clown.
Honestly if this game was about a old english woman lady on a walker escaping the law and doing mad fricking yoyo tricks on a segway this game would be 100 times better
It’s because they had make her brown it fricks her whole design up
changed her hair colour. I still think there's a lot of dumb shit going on with the design but I'd probably buy the game if she looked like this
I think just giving her normal eyes/face would've done wonders.
I think the color is half of it, honestly. I think the jester fit is too "pointy" or poofy in the wrong places. I found something that reinterprets Penny's design from a few threads ago that I think is pretty neat. Could just be me though
Color swaps ain't fixing this. The whole design is unsalvageable.

[...]
Still looks bad. The whole design is just fricked, it's completely nonsensical
my last attempt. I still think it looks stupid but not offensively bad enough to make me not buy the game
Dirty orange and purple with grey hair is just kind of shitty as a colour scheme. I don't know why they thought that was the way to go.
Probably should have literally just made it blue and red with yellow accents, like Sonic (or Pomni), because we all know why we're playing this game.
>Wargroove
I know exactly what you mean with that game. Legitimately good impressive pixel art in that game, that they kind of ruin with tumblr sensibilities, and it's a shame.
The timing for dashes and wall jumps feels a bit finicky, I'm having difficulty identifying when they'll take and it's messing with me a bit. Any tips on that?
Having the yo-yo on the right stick is interesting, but is there much use for it? I've mostly just cut grass and whacked penguins like that. Usually you're just hooking onto whatever is right by you
I wasn't gonna pick this up but now that I know it has IL leaderboards I'm sold.
The best thing about niche time attack games is that it's just you and a few autists.
How overbearing is the mandatory collectibles in this game?
I was excited for quick stylish runs to the finish line, but so far most levels i've seen have objectives like "search for the 5 screws" or "search for the 5 lunches" or "search for etc"
Are those optional? Just a small minority of objectives?
>How overbearing is the mandatory collectibles in this game?
Very. It makes you feel like shit when you don't go out of your way to collect them.
It is a weird way to go about having ~~*optional*~~ collectibles.
This is such a specific point of comparison but the main thing I feel when I'm playing this game is 'this is basically the exact game I wished Frogun was while I was playing that'
>4-1 >Ring sends you into lavafall, passage behind it >Auto kills you every time
The first coins in here right? Is it just bullshit to get or something? Frick it kills me everytime it's so unclear
I hit world 3 last night and I’m really loving it. It absolutely has Sonic DNA, but clearly from someone who has a deeper understanding than going fast and comic autism. It’s momentum based with a high skill ceiling. Performing long combos are a ton of fun, and doing well keeps your momentum up. Admittedly, I love the art. It feels very in line with the Saturn library, but HD. Hell, even the UI I keep seeing people complain about looks really good in motion.
It still has plenty of time to shit the bed, but I’ll definitely be replaying if it stays this good throughout. 3D platformers were due for a mogging.
I'm literally still on world 1, just committing the specifics of the movement to muscle memory and having a ball. I'll progress eventually but for now I'm still having fun
It feels a little wonky at first, but once it starts to click the possibilities are a really cool revelation. Once you move on you’re going to have a blast, anon.
Why does it matter? It's a high execution platformer. Word of mouth should be enough. If games need massive advertising budgets and heavy marketing then we're just not going to get good games any more.
I mean yeah, the pipeline for vidya success is disgusting now. It hinges on streamers and Twitter artists picking up the game, possibly the very last people I'd want having any say over video games.
Breakaway from what?
my grip
her abusive Black person boyfriend
my boner
She really needs boobs. It's such a small detail but it makes the design way better.
Genuinely improves the design and fixes the strange needle neck that she had before. Adding volume to her oddly proportioned body helps a lot.
White patriarchy
The consequences of accidentally raping the king.
From good character design and good lighting and textures.
Sonic Shit. itd pretty clear the devs are sonic fans that are sick of segas bullshit so they made a Sonic game in 3D better then they ever could.
AI slop.
obsessed
making shit up slop post
We'll see when Fitgirl repacks it.
Am I the only one that thinks the yoyo wants to frick Penny
Everyone wants to frick Penny
Everyone wants to frick jesters nowadays
Penny controls like a sack of potatoes walking in wet cement and the yo yo controls are frustratingly inaccurate. Need to fix rhis
Absolute moron detected
It's literally Mario Odyssey mechanics but even more fleshed out and with crazy momentum
This game will be an ultimate filter for movement brainlets, anyone who actually plays video games will fricking love this shit
where's the ick
where's the prostate massager?
>still defending balan wonderslop

this
>Glorified flying and/or infinite wall climbing by spamming a bunch of moves making the actual level design redundant
Yawn. I fricking knew it was going to be more of this type of trash
?
you can only do one dash and one swing before touching the ground
You don't have to play it like that, moron. I've been taking my time in the levels and exploring.
?si=r0He7ms_j7uKsLkT
>grown ass man in a dark ass room playing a video game made for 5 year old kids in bed on his handheld
LMAOO
Let me guess, you think society is collapsing and women suck or something?
It's a Sonic fangame. It's made for autistic people, not five year olds.
Buy an ad.
You buy one first. Stop advertising ads, I'm not spending money on a banner for this website
You should be rolling around on the you basically always on the ground and shifting air momentum around with penny.
People are gunna go fricking nuts when they start figuring out the combo system and movement. You can go REALLY fast.
Very organic thread, very real posters.
Watched Argick (sonic the hedgehog speed runner) for like 2 minutes. The game was sponsoring him to play it. He died 8 times trying to make two simple jumps. Either he's trash or they are both trash.
I'll make a webm, give me a few minutes.
>watching LE WACKY SCOTSMAN
I've lost all interest in the game now
>Someone I don't like is enjoying something? I don't like it now.
Yes.
>you can dash and go straight onto the top midair to ride it at top speed
Yessir, and you can dash out of it to make sharp turns.
don't you have to hop off the top first to do that
>Top
Isn't it a Yoyo or is that an ability spoiler?
Okay, so this game is basically to Sonic Adventure what Hat In Time is to Mario 64. I would definitely recommend and I'll be dissapointed if Ganker sleeps on this. Very good game so far, stuff like this should be encouraged.
Oh and another thing, it seems you can basically get through entire levels without dropping a combo, the idea is to basically never touch the floor.
That looks slick
biggest complaint tho is that i don't like how everything looks sonic adventure is hard-carried by its aesthetics
I like it, its like the genesis era but 3D. Like it kind of reminds of dynamite heady or ristar or something.
Game seriously needs a fisheye lens or trailing effect, fricking SOMETHING to spice it up beyond a goofy ahh color palette.
>goofy ahh
You have to be 18 years or older to post here.
Fisheye? Trailing effect? Why do you want to give everyone eye cancer?
The problem is that its too damn colorful in a bad way
I'm not so sure about that, personally.
exactly this, it does looks a lot like an old Treasure game from the odd coloring
I think the Dynamite Heady comparison specifically is because both games have a sort of toys/theater theme.
>I like it, its like the genesis era but 3D
Yeah, this is basically how I would describe mega man legends or something.
>genesis era but 3D. Like it kind of reminds of dynamite heady or ristar or something.
Very accurate and almost definitely what they were going for.
the art style and everything looks like genesis box art
It doesn’t look like the Genesis era in 3D, it looks like the artwork from Sonic Jam/Sonic the Screensaver/Harmony, which is overly bright and colourful because they were used for the covers of Sega’s internal magazine.
In terms of the games themselves, level had well constructed palettes, usually with two, sometimes three, main colours, which isn’t what you see here.
This is closest in look to Oil Ocean Zone, but that’s is nowhere near as bright/bold as here.
>It doesn’t look like the Genesis era in 3D
That’s not what Sonic looked like, unless by “Genesis era” he wasn’t referring to Sonic, but meant Genesis games.
I don't think dynamite headdy is a sonic game.
It isn’t, but mentions Ristar (made by “Sonic Team”) and Dynamite Headdy in a separate sentence, as in it looks both like those and Sonic
Why have you been behaving hysterically the whole thread? Are you on your period or somethin
I’ve posted 3 times.
yeah the color palette itself looks like vomit
What is the point of the citizens that say one liners? I tried reading most of their dialog in the first zone but after that I realized it was killing the flow/a waste of time. It seems like one of those things that really didn't need to be in the game.
>i don't like how everything looks
This is one of the best looking games I've seen recently, (aside from the character designs), what are you on?
>What is the point of the citizens that say one liners?
Just a goofy thing to see when you zip by them, apart from the ones with little minigames and things.
Peeeeepsiiiimaaaaaaaaaaaaan
?si=v_cG70TVb35MWy4s
That looks nothing like Sonic.
I think he meant the game movement feels like Sonic Adventure, like how Hat in Time feels a lot like Mario 64/Mario Sunshine
You're bad at sonic then.
>sleeps on this
>Oh and another thing
you're not fooling anyone, homosexual
the monogatari homosexual has been posting here for like over a decade
Very subtle mate
So, soicucks and journalist are going to like SA again like how they started to like Crash after the remakes?
Even if the game is good. It sets a bad precedent to buy it. It was clear the developer made a conscious decision to make penny a troony character. I will not play the game until that gets fixed.
Obsessed
I just wont play a game with an ugly character. Double down with an ugly androgynous character that looks like a troony. Not my fault you made an ugly character.
you're tilting at windmills my dude
not everything is muh troony boogeyman
Same
the visuals are fine but i will admit it's moronic for indies to not make their female protags sexy or at least very conventionally cute like hat kid if the protag is a child or else you miss out out on free marketing especially if you are just gonna shadow drop the game on the same day as Splatoon 3 dlc. penny is cute just not in the same way as hat kid is.
Penny looks like they drew a decent character then had it go through a trillion sensitivity check companies, actual trash
And that decent character was Marina from Mischief Makers.
>why is the character in a colorful child friendly game not a busty bimbo?! what the frick?!
Coomerism is a disease. Also penny is pretty cute
>why is the character in a colorful child friendly game not a busty bimbo?! what the frick?!
It's worth $30 at least
>Black person you played for Iess than 2 hours and think your opinion on the game is worth anything?
Worth a negative review on the game I guess.
If they lower the price on a sale or fix many of the issues I listed, (giving an option to disable the JSR minigame, fixing Penny's design with mods, etc...) I think I'll change it.
But for now....yeah......sadly it'll have to be negative.
Hopefully mods will fix the game's issues.
It's not Unity or Unreal so mods might not be something that happens, with how underwhelming the launch was
>It's not Unity or Unreal so mods might not be something that happens, with how underwhelming the launch was
Yeah I agree that you should NEVER review games with the idea that ""mods will fix it"", especially indie games.
So there are no collectibles in the main story mode where everyone will have their first impressions of the level....or are you moronic.
It does both. You’re free to go back and collect or time attack later.
I’m not reading your Reddit shitpost
>we are forced to come across collectibles that break the game's pacing dramatically
You sound like an autistic moron.
I'm an autistic moron, we do not claim this man
>wish this focused on speed
>complains about rascal being too fast
Make up your mind man
If you say so. It looks more like Chameleon Twist with a bit of Treasure DNA than it does a Sonic game.
>Sonic Adventure what Hat In Time is to Mario 64
I would have avoided it if I heard this
Wow, that bit where you rode the zipline and did nothing for absolutely ages was really something.
have a nice day
>Hat In Time
I admit I've only played 20 minutes of this years ago when I was half out of my mind in pain but I didn't feel it. What exactly does it do good? The mafia town map felt too big for its own good and by the time I reached the stage(?) 3 boss(it was like this big mafioso guy) I felt very disappointed with the game.
Not really. Hat in Time was 3D Mario but better than they could ever do it. This is more like 3D Sonic but mixed with Mario 3D World and Tony Hawk
Might buy it if it release on GOG, but shit this main character is ugly. And she's brown on top of that.
>GOG
Why would you give money to CDPR?
?si=xQ9Ci2AWOy710PtA
And Steam is a b***h when it comes to VNs, banning some and not banning others like fricking roulette.
Stop wienersucking Gaben.
>And Steam is a b***h when it comes to VNs
Only porn is banned from steam, why are you playing porn on steam? Why are you paying for porn? At all?
>Sex with Hilter
>Dad shower simulator
>Furry degenerate dating game
Oh sure, only "porn" gets banned on Steam.
>And she's brown on top of that.
That's a bonus
>Still being a GoGgay in anno domini 2011+13
They quite literally rugpulled on the DRM free thing as of like a month ago moron-kun. Pirate or go with steam
Interested in this game, but likely not paying for it because Mariel Cartwright worked on it.
i dont even know who the frick that is, i just play video games homie
The Night in the Woods girl?
No, the woman who attempted to perform a hostile takeover of Lab Zero and torpedoed Skullgirls and Indivisible.
Skullgirls was kind of already shit, it was a israeli grappler player's bad rip off of MvC with guilty gear mechanics hamfisted into it. There's a reason no MvC players stuck with Skullgirls, it was always forced.
hey man stop being fricking moronic and fishing for replies, this isn't even her game for fricks sake
How is that fishing for replies? It's a legitimate concern and it didn't derail the thread in any way. I'm personally excited for the game and I want to play it.
What the frick is wrong with that cat?
Some cats are more autistic than others.
moronic catposter
Legitimately who?
Zionist.
Big boob asian girl
Don't look up anything recent. She hit the wall.
>big boob
Where
one of the skullgirls artists that is now CEO of the skullgirls company or something
>Mariel Cartwright
Hard no, pick a better artist next time Christian. Not paying for anything she stuck her traitorous claws into.
Don't worry. She'll oust Taxman out of Evening Star. Maybe he'll actually ask Stealth to join his new company.
QRD?
Yes, you are one.
She was an artist and animator on Skullgirls who was later part of a secret conspiracy to throw the autistic head programmer and owner of Lab Zero out of the company. It didn't work because he is the owner of Lab Zero People naturally assume she and her peers are also responsible for the removal of Alex Ahad, the lead artist of Skullgirls.
the cat is very stressed and hasn't activated its fight or flight response yet
Welp. Guess I'm not playing this
She was the lead animator for skullgirls.
Good OST
PLAY IT
Is this board so goddamn useless and lazy now that they're really not going to play this?
>now
bought it,i'll try playing it tomorrow but thread will be dead by then
They drop the game with the only ad being a Nintendo PARTNER Direct during the morning work hours. No one knows this shit is out. It worked for Hi-Fi Rush because that shit was on Gamepass
I have yet to see a single little girl in this game. Not interested.
You haven't seen the protagonist?
>discussion pre-release
>"the design is perfectly fine you braindead coomer morons."
>discussion post-release
>"AIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE PLEASE PLAY MY- I MEAN THIS GAME"
The design isn't an issue imo, its the mangled surprise launch on a game that should have received more advertising/showcase spots and a demo prior to release
Played it. Finished it. Mediocre
How come?
Will this game cure my depression?
Probably not.
If you start speedrunning it and become a girl, maybe. Otherwise you'll have to search for meaning outside of video games.
>shit game
>add a little girl in it
>lands whales will eat it all up
Was the shadow drop a mistake?
Seems like its barely selling on Steam
The release date certainly was - https://splatoon.nintendo.com/en/expansion-pass/
Damn, was expecting a launch date from the direct but they ended pulling a hi-fi rush
Its mid
Spark is still the best not sonic game
spark 3 combat is awful and the levels are too long
Spark 3 was awful, this is way better
Absurd thighs on this b***h.
Cutscenes should have just been in-engine. Their 2D art just looks bad and cheap.
Looks like "she's" packin' some heat, too.
Any troony shit in this game,?
It's transcore, thoughbeit very abstract
Why do you keep fricking asking this?
It's a completely valid question if money is involved.
>Released with zero fanfare
Oof. I don't think the studio is going to survive
Not like this pennybros....
3D platformers are dead...
Pseudoregalia did moderately well though.
I think that dev is on the right track.
best game in years imo
pseudoregalia is a 6 dollar game, penny is a 30 dollar game
people no longer don't want to spend more than 10 dollars on a game about jumping
Consider that Pseudoregalia was a game jam project made in a few months that got adapted into a very short game to be sold.
Its over...
After 6th gen devs realized nobody were really buying 3D platformers anymore. Its still a problem today.
Fair. Although we've been getting a lot of 3D platformers lately. All indie but they're still very good.
Because people don't want to pay $70 for a 6 hour experience, no matter how awesome it is. They'd rather pay $70 for a bloated Zelda game
top demo of nextfest vs game never given a release date shadowdropped out of nowhere that could have used a couple months in the oven still
Turns out games get better if you 1: let fricking people know it exists, and 2: Have a demo
Who knew
mhm sweaty the game was shown in a nintendo direct, and the demo is whichever Sonic game is your favourite
>Tendie direct
>Showcase
Yeah no, it needed a proper fricking marketing campaign
Also
>Implying this plays like Sonic
Instead of looking at numbers go up or down why don't you actually play some games, homo?
I don't think we're going to get fun games any more.
>fun game is when it relies on nostalgiabait and tricks morons to play them because it's le good old days of gaming
You wouldn't know a good video game if it smacked you across the head with a baseball bat jaded incel homosexual
>game is too intelligent for modern audiences
Balatro is just unabashed digital crack, it's barely a game. It's gambling on top of gambling with a sleek coat of paint. I'm not saying that to disparage the game, but it firmly belongs in the same category of game as, say, Vampire Survivors - an addictive time-waster that doesn't really offer you anything other than raw dopamine.
I haven't played Penny's. I didn't even think it was out, actually.
Penny’s ugly design is going to destroy the game when that is your pic on Steam. People are going to “nope” past it so hard.
>Literally zero marketing not even teasing
>Shadowdrops on a frick switch event despite that the fact that tendies only give a shit about tendie games
>Doesn't do well
Closed doors imminent
The aesthetic of this game is such a fricking turn-off I couldn't care less how good the gameplay is.
Whys she look like shes got down syndrome?
>look like
It feels like the double-tap to dash is really finicky. Sometimes I swear it doesn't go off when I press the buttons with the usual rhythm
you're not the only one anon.
It's much more execution heavy than Sonic but I really appreciate the degree of freedom.
unironically git gud
Skill issue
I guess but shouldn't this game have a low skill ceiling given the audience?
No? You can definitely suck and get through the game, theres just a higher skill ceiling and it doesnt make you feel like your good even if youre bad, theres way too many games like that already.
absolute morons for them to shadowdrop this early in the morning during two big events and around a bunch of new releases
What was the other event?
Movement feels great and I love the aesthetic but man the PC version is very buggy so far. I've clipped into several ledges and in 1-2 I merged with the wall and slowly slid out of bounds
Definitely wanna play the game so I won't refund but I may wait and see if this stuff gets patched first
how are you supposed to grab power ups without losing the combo?
god i wish i knew an answer to that question
Waiting for the white Penny mod.
I am moronic and didn't know there was a dash until reading this thread how do you do it?
press attack twice, if you open up the menu you can review the tutorials from the prologue
Cool thank you, I kinda zipped through th prologue thinking I'd figure it out as I go but that seems like a big thing to have missed
>Iizuka basically told Whitehead to frickoff when they wanted to do Sonic Mania 3D so they decided to go off and make this while Sonic fans got stuck with the dogshit Superstars and Apple exclusive slop.
There's also the forgettable Frontiers DLC.
But le epic anime battle cutscenes!!!
Super Sonic 2!!!!!!
The apple exclusive game is kinda decent, unfortunately its stuck behind the Apple paywall with almost no hope of ever getting a port
Dream Team is a better game than this.
Absolutely not.
Yes it is it has better level design.
No it doesnt homosexual, stop concern trolling
It is not concern trolling.
The game has level design that fits the mechanics not Sonic Adventure 2 gameplay in Forgotten Land level design.
The level are built like race tracks and have all kinds of interesting geometry and obstacles for optimization.
Dream Team was decent, but it's clearly hindered by being on Apple Arcade. I think the team behind could have done a bigger game for PC/Consoles
fun to play but the level design isn't too impressive and the bosses are terrible. 7/10
>Mariel Cartwright is involved
I'll pass. Dear fricking lord.
This is the best sonic game in decades.
its barely anything like Sonic besides the rolling aspect, its more like Mario 3D World and Kirby
It's literally 3d sonic mania, the yoyo even works similiar to drop dash.
holy moron, you probably hyped it up as that in your head prerelease and gaslit yourself into believing that.
See
I played the game moron, you realize sonic didn't invent chase sequences right? it has aspects of Sonic but as a overall product its nothing like a Sonic game.
It looks like your mental illness is preventing you from properly reading the contents of his posts.
his post is moronic, this game is closer in gameplay to mario odyssey than it is to any Sonic game. the yoyo even functions exactly like the hat in that game even giving you powerups by grabbing onto stuff, also alot of the level design are lifted straight from kirby like the cannons you have to light and race to before they go off. the only aspect that is similar to Sonic is the rolling but even that you could argue is closer in control to Odyssey than shit like SRB2 or any of those other Sonic fangames.
NTA but its obvious Penny's yoyo is most similar to Sonic. Hell, I suspect that was one of the earliest parts of the game
you are braindead
Stop being such an aggressive and moronic c**t, its not blasphemy to say that massive sonic gays who made sonic mania didn't have some influence from Sonic.
I already said that the game has aspects of Sonic the rolling being one and the aesthetics being another but thats where it ends pretty much. actually play the game
Well then what's the problem? We agree with each other.
you said the yoyo is most similar to Sonic which is absolutely not true at all, the yoyo is literally cappy for odyssey with a drop dash added to it.
To anyone curious about the gameplay, here's a pretty quick run I did of the first level.
nice, sick
how do you keep your combo up?
also you can get on the yoyo mid air right after a dash if you time it right
>also you can get on the yoyo mid air right after a dash if you time it right
how the frick did I not know this.
Thanks, will be shaving off like ten seconds on my route now.
this actually looks amazing, I was sold when I saw the drifting
still gonna wait though, not a fan of bugs
Alright, got second place again. I'll see if I can get a .webm of a run like that. Maybe then I'll actually start time attacking other levels, lol.
I think #1 might've gotten a stupid ass skip that I can't seem to get down.
Oh frick, this game has leaderboards in time attack?
...and as soon as I record I get a slightly better run than that!
Enjoy
a cleaner version with sound
nyoooooooom
hey buddy
eat shit
kino.
are you the guy that posts all those sonic gameplay webms
I do watch a guy who reviews Sonic and is autistic about time attacking, but, regardless, I'm somebody else.
This game just has clicked with me and I like to play it.
ah okay
casuals will get shit on by the time they make it to sheila
this game respects the player's competence way more most modern games
looks fun. its more mario odyssey but with better air controls and momentum jumps in some areas.
>3D platform with ACTUAL FRICKING MOMENTUM and freedom of expression
I will now pirate your game and possibly pay for it at a later date
If you aren't throwing the yoyo with the right stick and using the triggers/bumpers you aren't playing the game
Game is pozzed
Is it actually?
No.
Well, she's no Hat Kid.
brat kid
Eddie did nothing wrong.
>It's fricking amazing
No one seems to care for it which amazes me even more
>indie game forgets to have mass appeal
many such cases
its too expensive. i'll buy it when its 20 leaf funbucks or something.
>Woah, we sure are getting a lot of press coverage for our game
>Should we tell them the release date?
>No
>Woah, Digital Foundry did a feature about our game's tech. Should we have Taxman do a special interview going over the details and another chance to plug a release date
>No
>So when do we want to reveal it?
>In the middle of the week, at 6am PDT, during a Nintendo PARTNER Direct, not even an actual Nintendo Direct, right in the middle of it while the news of the Splatoon 3 DLC is dominating the Nintendo news circle while the Elden Ring DLC are dominating the rest of the news.
>THAT, is when we drop our game
It's mind boggling. I'm probably the target audience for something like this but the "surprise release" is just so weird I'm going to hold off for a bit. All the marketing for this game was botched
Pizza Tower is kind of a comparable indie game and it marketed itself way better despite not getting mainstream press
pizza tower, while a great game in itself, is carried by its art and animation, without them it would've been one of these niche platformers like garlic
I don't agree but it certainly was SOLD by it's art direction, and Penny is going to only lose sales because it's art direction. The cutscenes especially look unappealing.
Pizza Tower rocks but in terms of pure gameplay I think Curse Crackers is probably the current indie frontrunner
I'm the target audience, and I learned about this game because I came here to discuss the Elden Ring + Shin Megami Tensei announcements but decided to look at the catalog first.
A poker game that was just released completely mogged it
There's a reason half of Sonic Mania's credits are for marketing guys. Without SEGA these guys fricking suck ass at the actually getting people to buy your game part
It got the most advertising on Nintendo Directs, also the fact that it's a cartoony 3D platfomrer makes me think it's a safe bet that it sold the most on Switch.
Indies literally always sell better on PC
Refunded this game after about an hour of playing it. The controls are trash. Going fast while riding the yoyo makes your turning shit so you can't maintain it at all. There's no way to satisfyingly maintain momentum while also being precise with your movements. It's so sluggish.
You people actually like this shit?
how do you play videogames as a hobby and still be this terrible at them.
Because I enjoy games with controls that actually respond to my inputs.
>My depth perception is ass but I also notice that there's no drop-shadow in this game
this gets way way worse in later stages, I normally don't have a problem with that and im still undershooting/overshooting shit all the time
Damn that's unfortunate, I tried one of the star globe stages and I immediately noticed how badly I need a drop shadow, platforming on any thin platforms feels like a gamble for no good reason.
>no drop shadow
..is that not basic game design 101 for a 3d platformer? what?
it does have a drop shadow, he's lying
Post proof please, otherwise I won’t buy your game
Literally just look at the gameplay webm and anon posted earlier
Wtf, why would anyone lie on the internet
It does have a proper drop shadow, you can see it not rendering properly on multiple of the clips here (e.g.
)
Guess I’ll wait for an inevitable patch and a discount
I've played the game, and it does have shadows. Look at any gameplay footage if you doubt this.
There are already 2 webms in this thread showing the game has a drop shadow lmao
>3D game without shadows
How the frick do they get the smallest bullshit right in Sonic but can't make a basic ass 3D platformer
It's not like Sonic Adventure, because this game doesn't have a super jump where you can fly over the whole game in 1 second.
The combat is really, really annoying. I get that the idea is just that you're supposed to run through everything but if they didn't want me to stick around anywhere they shouldn't have put in so much NPC dialog
how's the Switch version? is it serviceable?
30fps
game is missing unique setpieces all the level blend into eachother.
What's the framerate like on Switch?
Heard it's 30fps, avoid like the plague.
True bro, I'm going back to sonic frontiers, the best fast food sandwich.
If you want to tell Sega they're doing a bad job, buying a game that disappoints you is not going to do it
Does it at least have furry incest bait like super lucky's tale?
>Exploration is completely ignored in favor of speed
Sounds like a big plus to me, I'm sick of running at the camera and jumping outside of every fixed shot just so I don't miss one semi-important collectible every 30 attempts, looking at you Hi Fi Rush .
It can be done well.
If this were Penny she'd be swarmed by 50 badniks every time she stopped and the player would have to reset.
I think you are just mad because you went in expecting a Sonic game and got something different
Literally every ad for this game mentions Sonic
?????? link me a trailer they dropped where they insinuated in anyway this would be similar to Sonic
>"from the team that made X"
>this can only mean that completely new title Y must be an X reskin
What they showed is similar to Sonic, in that it’s a 3D platformer. So, a better movie analogy would be switching from jump scare horror to psychological horror.
I haven't played this game but from everything I've seen it's not trying to be Sonic. There's a clear influence but it's not like Spark or Freedom Planet which are more like elevated fangames, not just wearing the influence on their sleeve, the entire outfit is the influence.
It was clear to me as well, but it’s not as if it was completely removed from Sonic, and a lot of people interpreted it as a Sonic-like game.
Literally blown the frick out.
>(seriously)
>Ctrl + F Sonic
>52 mentions in this very thread
>Several anons saying it's Sonic or Sonic like
I don't blame you anon. You're not wrong.
only because they mention it's made by the sonic mania team
This game is riding off the coat Tails of Mania's success. I think the devs also definitely have inflates egos with this marketing stunt they just pulled. Not many indie games get the red carpet rolled out for them on their first big project like Evening Star did, and these guys decide to just not give any information out on the release. It's like they're expecting people to just buy it.
Personally I didjust buy it because I liked mania that much but now I'm thinking it was just a fluke
>Exploration is completely ignored in favor of speed (Sonic didn't start doing this until 06)
Sonic has been about speed ever since Sonic 2
Sonic 2 is probably the least exploration focused, but 3&K has special stage rings.
>Exploration is completely ignored in favor of speed
I haven't touched the game yet, but from what I've seen the game has fixed camera pathing, which doesn't favor exploration.
this is one of the most flagrant shill threads i've seen in a while, half of these posts read like blatant marketers trying to sell this game
shut the frick up
A good mark of a shill thread is when there are unprompted posts trying to shit on piratebros.
Now that the dust has settled, will (You) buy their next game blindly again?
nah, I don't hate the game I think its good actually but I thought it would be higher quality
lol. I was 100% expecting this. The trailers didn't lie, they delivered the game they promised. The only thing I can complain about this game is how amateurish it looks, but that was also sort of notable in the trailer so I can't say I didn't expect it.
the animations after you beat a level are so fricking bad
buy an ad
This is definitely going in my filters. Sick of you braindead homosexuals entering any thread trying to discuss video games with this shit.
Buy an ad
>schizo's throwing a fit again
>shills when people are playing and enjoying games
literally no one is playing this game, let's be real. hey, christian, I know you're here. I hope your next game does well.
I'm too busy playing balatro but I'll grab it on sale or pirate it later
>I'm too busy playing an actual literal phone game
huh
>Phone game
???
Soul.
>Published by the indie label of Take-Two
Its a pirate for me.
smart anon
any anons finished it? how long is it expected to be?
Like 5-7 hours. The last two worlds are lame and the final boss is ass
How's the game on Switch? Is it really 30FPS? Seems like an awful decision for a gotta go fast 3D platformer.
She looks trans-coded...is this a trooncore game?
You are mentally ill
Sounds like its essential trooncore so i will be giving it a pass...unlike you.
Is that all you ever think about
I've experienced a couple of collision bugs so far. Stuff like getting stuck on a wall or falling through the ground because I went into a corner wrong. Not really a huge deal to me because I give indies far more slack in this regard
What I really wanna know is if dual stick or button is the way to play. Pic unrelated.
loving this game so far
Appreciate the penny culo anon
only homosexuals play platformers
I do enjoy how everytime a game like this comes out it just exposes how many frickers on Ganker are underages that probably have the sharty open on another tab
>how dare you enjoy a game right now that is not Elden Ring
Anyone else in the late game finding this?
git gud
Have you?
>She takes a while to hit top running speed
You aren't supposed to touch the ground. Ever.
This game is really perfect I had it on my playlist for a while now Ganker is too busy playing the FOTM game to actually play good games and then wonder why there aren't any good games to play. If you're thinking of buying the game do it I was hesitant too I'm having a blast.
Just bought it better be good
Why on earth they decided to launch this without a demo for next fest is beyond me, also picked a terrible day for a launch alongside the Splatoon expansion.
>alongside the Splatoon expansion.
I don't think anyone plays splatoon.
You’re moronic.
My switch has been sitting in my closet untouched for a year and a half.
That’s your problem.
No its Nintendo's problem for making unfun and boring games with zero replayability now.
Is there's any good art of her yet?
Only good character designs get good art. Ideally, anyway.
the controls and movement are complete dogshit.
I've played the first level for like 8 hours straight and I'm still only in the top 10 for speedrunning it
how fricking autistic are the people playing this game
Game would had been more popular if the character design wasnt dogshit
Is my game broken? Why does this thing move at a pace that seems like a third of even realistic, non-vidya running? Jumps barely clear a single gap. What the frick
>he's walking around and jumping normally
are you disabled?
Double tap the yoyo button to dash, use that momentum to carry you into a roll right as you're about to land
Penny's Big Breakaway is a terrible name, sounds more like a subtitle for the catchy actual name it should have.
wait....you are right
What's the real title?
zipline
This game is a marketing black hole
They were hoping the game would be carried by its gameplay and “Made by Sonic Mania.” Everything else about this game is a cluster frick. I would get it, but it’s so ugly that I don’t want to look at it. And with the way things are now, I’d rather save my $30 on something else.
Score being easy to grind on some levels like world 6 and the final level is definitely a mistake
Terrible title.
Terrible looking main character.
Not touching something that isn't aesthetically pleasing.
Simple as.
Why did this of all games have a schizo latch onto it?
>Brown MC
D R O P P E D
This board sucks ass now.
First time?
I've been here since 2006. Things are genuinely really bad right now. I think moderation staff needs to be canned, the culture they've created here is terrible.
>I've been here since 2006
>Ganker only became bad in 2024
dumb newbiebabble
We had multiple times for Ganker to show how bad is at games, why do you realize it only now?
Just from the top of my head:
>Marauders in doom eternal
>That moronic grill in elden ring
Any indie with rankings like furi or pizza tower
>now
It's been years since this board last was good, man. Years.
I'm the moron who didn't know how to dash last night. Drinking my coffee and about to hop back into the game
Her face is too weird. What are those eyes? Looks like a digital zoomer circus character.
the gameplay looks good but the character design is kind of off-putting.
It’s because they had make her brown it fricks her whole design up
it does help, more than I thought it would actually. I think darker hair would help too, but even still I don't care for the hairstyle or several parts of the outfit
changed her hair colour. I still think there's a lot of dumb shit going on with the design but I'd probably buy the game if she looked like this
the colour isnt the problem its her shape design that people don't gel with.
I think just giving her normal eyes/face would've done wonders.
Still looks bad. The whole design is just fricked, it's completely nonsensical
FRICK YOU!!! FRICK YOU HOLY SHIT!!! HOW DARE YOU TAKE SOMEONE'S ART AND """"FIX"""" IT YOU ROTTEN SCUMBAGS!!!!
I think the color is half of it, honestly. I think the jester fit is too "pointy" or poofy in the wrong places. I found something that reinterprets Penny's design from a few threads ago that I think is pretty neat. Could just be me though
Good attempt.
my last attempt. I still think it looks stupid but not offensively bad enough to make me not buy the game
Better but the boob cut out will help it.
Also if you can, cut out the BG. Since the Mustard colors do not go well with each other.
Dirty orange and purple with grey hair is just kind of shitty as a colour scheme. I don't know why they thought that was the way to go.
Probably should have literally just made it blue and red with yellow accents, like Sonic (or Pomni), because we all know why we're playing this game.
>purple
that's fricking blue, colorblindlet
This design is better then Hat Kid, 10/10 make a game with her but the developers are moronic
looks way too sexy, what are you, a pervert?
>Wargroove
I know exactly what you mean with that game. Legitimately good impressive pixel art in that game, that they kind of ruin with tumblr sensibilities, and it's a shame.
>pedobait
>saying that shit unironically
Go buy a one-way ticket to the middle of a busy highway.
The timing for dashes and wall jumps feels a bit finicky, I'm having difficulty identifying when they'll take and it's messing with me a bit. Any tips on that?
Clean your inputs, go practice on the first level if you have to.
Having the yo-yo on the right stick is interesting, but is there much use for it? I've mostly just cut grass and whacked penguins like that. Usually you're just hooking onto whatever is right by you
I thought you said this game didn't have any ESGslop in it
>stops playing on the second level for fake outrage at neutral PRONOUNS
why does Ganker behave like this
nobody fricking says partner
Yeah they do, people have been saying SO for about a decade now.
redditers aren't people
cowboys say partner
Why can’t people say boy/girlfriend anymore?
looks like AIslop shovelware to me
I wasn't gonna pick this up but now that I know it has IL leaderboards I'm sold.
The best thing about niche time attack games is that it's just you and a few autists.
>40+ dollars outside of america
>the laziest cutscenes and character designs you've ever seen
ill wait for a 15 dollar sale.
Anyone else miss when new indie games were like $15, not fricking $50
Good ones still are.
It should get a Pomni Mod
How overbearing is the mandatory collectibles in this game?
I was excited for quick stylish runs to the finish line, but so far most levels i've seen have objectives like "search for the 5 screws" or "search for the 5 lunches" or "search for etc"
Are those optional? Just a small minority of objectives?
3 errands per level, optional & only give you extra points.
the 3 showpieces (hexagon things) per level are used to unlock bonus stages
>How overbearing is the mandatory collectibles in this game?
Very. It makes you feel like shit when you don't go out of your way to collect them.
It is a weird way to go about having ~~*optional*~~ collectibles.
What platform should I get this on? I've heard the PC release is buggy but the Nintendo Switch is the Nintendo Switch
PC
>Ganker now likes woke games
Zoomers have taken over this cesspit
name a single thing in the game thats woke, should be easy since you played it, right?
Black wom*n protagonist
oh, so you're just an idiot, thanks for replying
>oh, so you're just an idiot, thanks for replying *tips fedora and smirks*
Hope they/them sees this, bro
This is such a specific point of comparison but the main thing I feel when I'm playing this game is 'this is basically the exact game I wished Frogun was while I was playing that'
I feel like both of those games have Chameleon Twist influence, which no one brings up, because no one knows what Chameleon Twist is these days.
I'm 34 so definitely old enough to know what Chameleon Twist is but I've never actually played it. Worth a try?
Yeah, they're fun. Not sure why they're so weirdly overlooked, actually. I guess people don't like fixed camera platformers (I do though).
I actually prefer fixed camera 3D games when it's an option. Last one I played before this was Legend of Nayuta and it was a great time
>4-1
>Ring sends you into lavafall, passage behind it
>Auto kills you every time
The first coins in here right? Is it just bullshit to get or something? Frick it kills me everytime it's so unclear
Nevermind found it, it was at the top of the ramp. I have no fricking clue why this ring is even here
I will wait for a sale. $30 is too much for a digital game. Definitely a red flag when there’s coomers excited over a game too.
Is it getting a physical release?
shorter and with repetitive design. Arbitrary locked to 30fps.
The Bugsy 3d game of 1995 have better ideas and constant 60fps
>tutorial boxes take the entire screen
that really a bad design
more like penny's big faceplant!
You're not bringing your best, Mung.
Why did they make her look like the quaker oatmeal dude
It’s woke shit character design. Not worth even thinking about
I wonder if anyone ever told these anons their mothers won't actually die if they don't reply to the posts
How can you be so sure?
Why are all you morons saying the game is ugly
It looks perfectly fine for an indie 3d platformer
It's one moron with some political agenda.
I feel the underperformance of this game will have enormous consequences for the future of fast 3d platformers.
Shouldn’t have shadow dropped it
