it's just about the worst damn character design I've ever seen. what is going on with the clothes/body? why the FRICK do its eyes look like this? what are those things at the corners of the eyes?
>why the FRICK do its eyes look like this?
Because it's Sonic's mono-eye, but in reverse. >what are those things at the corners of the eyes?
My best guess is clown makeup meant for the cheeks, but bled into the eyes due to extra runoff made by the previously mentioned design decision
Don't think for a minute that I'm defending this design, it's a mess, I'm just trying to explain it.
Then do it. Right now, let's see your great character design. No spending more than 20 minutes on it since it's so fricking easy to do you fricking b***h.
Kek so the designer was really here
I dont know how to draw, but you really are a bad designer man
Cant blame people for choosing AI now if you keep designing cancer
I don't get it. You didn't "fix" her design so much as scale her up so she's no longer super deformed. Like yeah no shit she'd look this way if she weren't a chibi gremlin
This for me. I really can't understand the love indie games get in recent years. I take a look at them and don't feel like playing the games because the characters look stupid. I dodged Undertail because of that. And don't get me started on A Hat in Time. Nah man that game looks off putting. The only indie that I saw that had good designs is Hollow Knight.
And really that's the thing don't make your characters look stupid or lame otherwise I'm not going to want to play as said characters. Do none of these people understand marketability?
You having shit tadte doesn't mean that games with good designs like Undertale and AHiT have bad designs. You're clearly in the extreme minority there.
Kek no I'm not, literally most of Ganker agrees with me and we laugh at morons like you. Every day we have threads fill the catalog talking about games we won't play because of how the characters look especially if it's ESG shit, you're in the minority because you're probably gay.
No you won't, you'll stay in this thread replying to every response you get and seething that you tricked yourself into playing a shit game before realizing everyone else on this board hates it.

It very clearly isn't. Only a small handful of you are claiming the characters look bad, and the rest are talking about the game being fun and/or difficult, or begging for links to pirate the game. Several posts say they bought it or are planning to.
For the record, I don't intend to for a while. I'm playing through EO2 and next I'm grtting Unicorn Overlord. This I may pick up on sale some time in the future.

Your problem was bibary thinking. The designs and aesthetics are bad, but the visual style still has its merits, and the game design is good.

Sort of. Classic Sonic games are somehow more detailed and less cluttered looking.

This isn't about other games, it's about this game.
I will buy it tomorrow, but I don't think it's gonna do well which sucks. I wonder what they'll do after this game. I hope they survive it since they really shouldn't have Shadowdropped it. Even on forums people are saying the controls are frustrating, visuals are ugly etc... even though I like all those.
I just want more 3D platformers and it sucks to see people hate on one that's clearly had a lot of effort put into it.
>but I don't think it's gonna do well which sucks
Yeah same but I really just don't know what the frick they were thinking with that main character design, I do believe it kills a lot of hands-free marketing they could have had. For me it's because it gives me weird Balan Wonderworld PTSD.
>I really just don't know what the frick they were thinking with that main character design, I do believe it kills a lot of hands-free marketing they could have had. For me it's because it gives me weird Balan Wonderworld PTSD.
Kind of fitting because Balan was by the Sega guy who worked on Sonic and Nights and stuff. Makes sense that a Sonic knockoff is going for the same look.
This looks worse than most of the art in Balan by a lot.
Balan's characters literally look like Sonic characters, they're in a whole other world from Penny. Penny doesn't even deserve to be the street Balan characters shit on.
Most people agreed that Balan himself looked slick, though. The problem was that he wasn't the playable character and the game itself was banal, overly simple and had weird design choices.
I pirated it and the movement isn't fun enough to carry this sort of game. Game was a big disappointment for me. Also why the frick did they make one of the bosses for gay foot fetishists?
The level design reminds me of Sonic Adventure 1, but with Odyssey's platforming mechanics instead of the spin dash. Just the whole being able to go >Yeah, frick this
And fly around massive sections of the level over the void
The colors in this game "hurt" my eyes. I don't know how to explain. It's not that they literally hurt, but it's like it causes discomfort or something. It's bizarre.
The closest thing I can use as a comparison is when the "chromatic aberration" effect is out of control and makes everything a bit confusing to the eye.
You're not alone. The choices in hues and intensity feel heavy on the eyes.
I get they want a dose of 90s pop sonic title card style, but they didn't pick the colors well.
Also, the main font they use is absolutely dogshit. The kerning in "CL EAR" especially pisses me off.
Big catch doesn't look bad at all though and we already have the Noid 2 game to prove the game loop is fun.
Plus at least with the furry designs you can actually tell what the characters are supposed to be unlike Penny
Furry designs in a platformer is inoffensive to me just because platformers are kind of one of the two home grounds of anthros. So long as they look and move goofy enough I don't really care. I don't kvetch over Crash Bandicoot, for example.
Didn't realize there were so many poorgays interested in this game. I swear the fricking price seems to be the biggest point of contention for you morons.
Ganker is now horny turd worlders b***hing about games they can't afford trying to ruin everything for everyone else, and since they are poor and dumb they just play gacha and whatever is on gamepass. The board has honestly been ruined by non-americans. I can guarantee every single post crying about the game is a thirdie, we should bring /vint/ back.
Hispachan had roughly 20 million posts over its lifespan and when it died in 2022 a discord was posted and all its users came here, so you have a bunch of apes coordinating on discord shitting up the board. Think about how much damage this has caused.
I really miss when South Americans weren't fricking everywhere on the internet.

>WAAAAH THE GAME IS SHORT
Super Mario Bros has taken more quarters than you'll ever spend on games and you can beat it in under 6 minutes. I swear, kids these days don't understand what gaming is like. You think that if a game doesn't offer nipple circumference customization and a big skill tree, it isn't worth a few dollars. You would've lost every local Street Fighter tournament held in every arcade in the 90's.
>old graying boomer in charge of understanding monetary value
No wonder the economy is fricked with you guys growing up constantly spending money on bullshit
The issue is when every game is 30 dollars. I just bought palworld. Am I expected to buy this, last epoch, and helldivers also? Realistically you can only buy so many games. If everything releases at a high price point and I'm going to play it probably for like 4 hours at most i don't want to spend 30 dollars.
Are we genuinely complaining about $30 for a video game in current year? When AAA devs are adopting fricking $70 price tags? I know the game still needs a bit of polish but considering even those full price AAA games with massive dev times and dev teams still release in completely fricking broken states with the aforementioned $70 price tag, $30 from an indie dev hardly seems like a deal breaker. If you're not interested in the gameplay or whatever just say so. No need to be disingenuous when there are almost certainly games you'd be willing to shell out 30 bucks for.
Using a comparison point isn't a weak argument. It's literally stronger than just saying $30 isn't bad because it just isn't. But I don't care to please you. You can go frick yourself for all I care.
I bought the second Star Globe level and I don't get how the frick I'm supposed to get up there. I get the rings make it so you can jump and swing again, but how do you get enough height to get to the other rings?
I wish I didn't but I refunded the game. Here is why (tldr: It needs a lot more polish and refocus on the fun):
- I didn't like the in-level collection mechanics as for me it breaks my attention from enjoying the level to go hunting for collectibles. (I have the same problem in all Mario games).
- I wish it focused on speed and the combo system for point rankings instead of adding this Mario 3D World BS.
- The character design is awful, especially the main character.
- I'm not too fond of the JSR minigame you play when finishing a level. The controls for it are janky and the animations look awful as well as being a pace-breaker. It also makes you feel like shit failing it even when you had a great run through the rest of the level.
- The world looks like visual clutter at all times.
- $30 is too steep for me with all the problems listed above.
- The music gets grating as it repeats tracks too often.
----------
- Otherwise, the game-play is fun and while the controls take a while to get used to it was overall nice.
- I liked that level breaking and experimentation in this game made me feel smart and had me interact with the level design.
----------
If you can get the game on a sale or if there are mods to fix the issues above. Get the game.
>It does moron
So when I go into story mode (where everyone will experience all the levels for the first time) it doesn't make you feel like shit if you don't stop in your tracks to do quests or find the big coins?
....
....
Oh wait.....
lol resorting to this.
I win yet again. The shitty collection gimmick is bad game design as it activity breaks you out of the Fun/Flow state the entire experience hinges on.
Hopefully my example of having better standards than you in my vidya can help with your brainrot.
Desu~
h
He's copy and pasting that shit. He was posting yesterday about how it's not focused on speed and the combo system as well, and then when it was pointed out that it has all the features he's claiming to want he started b***hing about the fact that it does have them.
That is a LOT of text. I assume you're trying to explain to me the aesthetics here, but I already get it. They're trying to make a full game like the vibrant Sonic Jam splash art. It's stylish to look at for a few moments, but I don't want or need to look at this retina searing mishmash of colors from every side of hte color wheel just because they are trying to be different and quirky. Another thing to note is Sonic characters are VISUALLY SUCCINCT. Good ideas, boiled down to simple parts. Penny nor any of her supporting cast I've witnessed get that.
I don't need an art degree to know all of this disagrees with my sensibilities, no matter what words an artistic collective would assign it.

That's a lot of BASED text. The mor you read, the more based you are.
>art is a language and despite any creative input, the laws of grammar and syntax apply to every language >art, in layman's terms that you would understand, is an act of translation of the divine abstract of the human subconsciousness, in the tangible, articulated consciousness that can be understood and preserved throughout all space and time
Beyond based. I don't know why posters like that waste their time on Ganker.
I’ve only done the first world but > The music gets grating as it repeats tracks too often.
Was definitely a choice. Why not just alter the track slightly as the levels progress? Shit was frustrating me especially because my gf started fricking singing along with it while I played in bed.
My reason for not buying this game is that I just KNOW I will play it for one hour and get bored (I have ADHD). And even if by some miracle this wouldn't happen, $30 is too much. It's the same price I would pay for FIFTEEN snacks+drink. Not worth it.
If "creative differences" meant Sega just wanted them to keep rehashing existing old zones instead of making their own, I sympathize. I wouldn't want to be stuck trying to nostalgically jerk off their glory years instead of making new Sonic stages with fresh ideas I get to come up with. Frick that.
>Supposedly higher ups at Sega didn't want to give Whitehead's team the budget
This matches the profile of Sega management we know. Always cutting corners and trying to make Sonic into a discount rack title while they just cross their fingers fans don't notice.

From my understanding, Christian Whitehead and Iizuka developed plans for Mania's successor (supposedly these were used to guide the development of Superstars), Whitehead's team had developed a 3D engine and a tech demo, but officially, development never kicked off, no project was ever officially started. Supposedly higher ups at Sega didn't want to give Whitehead's team the budget they wanted to make the game, and got Arzest to do it for cheap, which is why Superstars has that half-finished look and feel.
I think it's for the best that Whitehead went on his own to make his own games. And Evening Star can still be great. They just need to kick all the females from their team and try again with some real artists and developers on their side this time.

At least someone would be making decent Sonic games, then.
>Did Sega even offer that?
They've said they talked about it but creative differences meant it didn't go anywhere.

Spot on. The core team's got heaps of talent, and I'd really love to see them flourish, not holding them back with misguided leadership. I get it, numales cringe at the idea of suggesting women don't belong on a creative team, but it's just common sense if you're aiming for top-notch quality, and it's not a coincidence that it was common practice in the golden ages of entertainment.
The visual style is fine and Penny is very cute. I think these threads are full of doomerisms because you gays still have sour grapes from Superstars last year.
>The visual style is fine and Penny is very cute
I know you want to believe that, Christian, I get where you're coming from. It's tough when you've spent a lot of time around girls in the workplace, you start to see things differently. We all have a soft spot for women, we love them, and that's where the problem lies. It's tough to be objective about their work. We tend to give them a pass and view their work through a rose-tented lens. We have the natural instinct to protect them. But when you're working on a creative project, and they're on your team, that's more of a hindrance. To most people out there that don't have that personal connection, to the fans and customers you're trying to reach, all they'll see is a product that doesn't quite click.
I don't know what other kind of person could deny that the game's aesthetic falls short of being appealing.

This.

Superstars was literal shovelware, not even worth talking about.
>great gameplay >middling level design >terrible cutscenes >ugly design >OST inconsistent going from great to background noise >bosses are either so short its pointless or so boring you just want it to hurry up and be over
I'd give it a 6.5-7/10, its a decent game but needed more refinement, the levels blend together and nothing really sticks out in your head after beating them. the presentation is also inconsistent some animations look great while some look unfinished and the cutscenes are laughable. really doesn't have the polish I was expecting. not worth 30 dollars wait for a sale unless you really really love speedrunning levels and desperately need a new 3D platformer
>dash inputs dont work >yoyo grappling only works half the time >penny freaks the frick out on any type of ledges making the camera go nuts too >auto targeting doesnt work too well either because objects are always placed in awkward positions where youre not sure you can just walk and yoyo to them or if you need to jump as well, which is 50/50 cuz penny sometimes just falls through and dies >ship boss is just an awful design and i kept getting stuck between parts of the ship and flying out of bounds >magician boss on the billiard table sometimes bugs out in the 2nd phase
Any thoughts on Tee Lopes' score? I thought the music of this game was pretty good, but not much more. Unlike his tunes in
Sonic Mania/Superstars a lot of them aren't really super high-energy and make-you-wanna-dance.
Listening through the OST….eh. It’s kind of fits the aesthetic rather than the type of game they are making. Some good tracks, but his other tracks are better.
What? If anything the game feels too fast, it's constantly rushing you through shit while you're still getting your bearings. The fricking tutorial level kicked my ass because I could barely get a hang of the controls while they're already throwing challenges at me.
This is the ugliest 3d platformer ever made, the character design is atrocious and the colors and art direction are vomit inducing. One could argue this is one of the worst main character designs ever made, it's impressive
By him, Sean Bialo and even Christian Whitehead himself.
Here's my favorites.
It's really off-beat for what Tee Lopes usually does, and it definitely isn't as "dance-worthy" as Tee's work on Sonic but the tunes are very pleasant and distinct.
>Went on Steam >Very Positive ranking >ALL of the top reviews are Negative >Go on Ganker >OP seems charitable >EVERYONE talking shit
Oh my god. It's happening. People are getting filtered by a game that tries to do something new. AGAIN.
Anons... Let me tell you, DO NOT play this game like a traditional 3d platformer. Grind the first few levels until you *get* the momentum system, because otherwise you'll never understand what makes it so good. The entire fricking game is one gigantic speed trap. The devs are bluffing, they put all of these hazards and powerups and alternate paths in the way because they KNOW you'll be too stupid to chain midair dashes into swings or learn the ledge grab timings.
FRICK. I can't describe how satisfying and jittery this game feels to play once it makes sense. You're constantly being yanked by the physics engine and the more you stop fighting against it the faster you go. NOTHING is off limits, the whole fricking map opens up once you get past that initial hurdle.
taxman biggest mistake was having respect for the average gamer's level of competence
I can see a lot of the level design choices being downright frustrating for normalgays that can't be bothered learning the yoyo tech
[...]
I literally shit myself when I realized the yoyo swing inherited all your momentum
no one on this board knows how to fricking play video games
>Ganker is shitting on it >meanwhile steam reviews are very positive
why is this board always wrong
Trying something new does not automatically make something good. They could have made just another Sonic game and it would have been ten times as good as Sloppy's Big Sloppaway.
beat the game last night, it was loads of fun. Gonna go back and get the rest of the Denizen missions and Stage Coins later, for now i'm playin Side Order.
Yeah, all the bosses in the game are pretty lame, but the final boss is especially pathetic. It's just an already piss-easy fight from half the game ago, but again.
Once again, platformers need to stop bothering with boss fights, or at least your typical "wait until weak point then bap three times and win". If you are doing "boss" fights, just make them into platforming sequences. A boss fight in a game like Penny's should be like that penguin ball level. Once the novelty wears off they're a net negative.

Bosses in this game really felt like a last minute addition
I think the idea was that after being defeated Eddie realized that he needed to work together with others to be a good performer so they all work together to put on a show power of friendship yadda yadda, but it happened so abruptly that I thought Tabuu had turned out to be evil (though I'd been expecting that since before the game came out anyway) and possessed him
>The non ridiculous slope jumps >The air drag >How the dashs momentum is actually weighty and can't be controlled
The irony that penny is the first 3d platformer most similar to classic sonic.

I don't understand how you're supposed to keep a combo going
does the game just want me to play like a fricking spastic and never touch the ground or always use the stupid ass roll even on tight platforms?
AHiT wasn't advertised as the next Sonic the hedgehog. It's not a momentum platformer and wasn't trying to be. But it still had tons of variety and interesting ideas. It's pretty obviously aiming to be more of an offbrand Mario 64.
Why do people say this game is similar to Sonic? It's nothing like any Sonic game at all
It's much more similar to Mario 3d world with the levels but with Mario Odyssey like mechanics
The only sonic thing about it is the ramps that let you build momentum with the roll
It's because of the movement and shit. There aren't a lot of 3D platforms that give you this feeling of liberty movement-wise, and since they are the ones that made Sonic Mania, the comparisons are just unavoidable
It’s all about momentum. It’s like Sonic in non-superficial ways. The skill ceiling is much, much higher than any 3D Mario.
It reminds me more of Crash than Mario or Sonic
Fixed camera, focus on chaining actions, section where you get chased by a giant boulder, goofy looking MC that dances at the end of levels, the way secret areas are handled, etc.
I would compare it to Kirby and the Forgotten Land, with how the camera behaves, just with an added focus on platforming.
the yoyo is literally Cappy from Odyssey just with more in air momentum built into it
funny how this game is filtering morons who don't know how to actually play video games just like Odyssey did
But Tendie, you are tryharding like a moron on an odyssey level there, trying to speedrun it or make it look fancy on purpose, meanwhile you can do shit like that with Penny's gameplay in a non-autistic way because that's how the game is meant to play. I doubt you can even make that same autistic clip in all the odyssey maps. But believe whatever makes you sleep at night
I like Odyssey but I still prefer SM64's moves. Cappy felt like unneeded complexity. I found myself constantly spamming the same hat-throw-dive-bounce-throw-dive move. It's like in the past a simple jump would suffice but now they spaced everything farther apart or capped (heh) his speed to make me use that combo repeatedly.

It's weird, i agree and disagree.
The base movement options are kinda underbaked in Odyssey with how the stomp jump bests everything, except for long jumping across some gaps so there is no reason to use other maneuvers unlike Mario 64 where every move had its niche.
Once you learn the hat throw, it trivializes everything so you will always have the flow chart of stomp jump/long jump -> cap jump -> dive and at this point most of the game is trivialized
However, if you go further beyond that for stuff like balloon hunting or self imposed challenges/skips, you'll find that there are different and better jump setups for specific situations. The hat jump breaks momentum, while the triple jump does not so it's the go to if you are going fast. Doing a roll start into your cap requires setup but will cover much more distance than a long jump and also allow you to build diagonal momentum. In that vein, setting up the cap with up throws and down throws lets you do some funky maneuvers around tricky corners.
It reminds me more of Crash than Mario or Sonic
Fixed camera, focus on chaining actions, section where you get chased by a giant boulder, goofy looking MC that dances at the end of levels, the way secret areas are handled, etc.
I'd like it to be slightly faster but it's clearly intentionally like that to encourage you to walk normally as little as possible
Game wants you to schmoove not stroll
>Its just people being dumb and thinking the only way you can spin around is with the right stick
....you mean there's another way to spin? The right stick is the only button listed on the tutorial section on that whirl move.
If you seriously didn't experiment with the controls for an hour at least figuring out everything you can do you need to fricking have a nice day and quit ruining video games for white people

Don't worry dude, someday you'll figure out how to use Whirl without spinning the R-stick!

>spending all this time trying to bait me into telling him how to do it
pathetic
Nah they're fine just unconventional, takes a little getting used to
Gameplay is so homogenized these days younger folk claim any game that doesn't control like the same 3 or so games they've been playing for the past 15 years has bad controls.
Sticks offer more precision.
It can be easier to hit interactable objects with the sticks since you have a 360 degree range of angles to choose from rather than just directly in front of you. It's pretty niche though. For dashing and swinging you should exclusively use the buttons.
Just gonna say it, FRICK the Buster minigames at the end of every stage. I always do the very first layer because for whatever reason doing any rotation inputs is just super finicky and fricks over any input coming next. Sucks too because you kinda have to beat them for the postcards on the Starglobe levels since they're so short.
Yeah, I picked it up. So far it seems fun and the movent is great. Though I was sort of surprised to see it came out yesterday since I didn't remember seeing any news about it leading up to it. Besides those initial trailers a long while back.
30 bucks for a sonic knockoff with ugly artstyle and no marketing is a steep ask.
if it makes you feel any better spark 3s all time peak was 160 and thats a lot better than this shit
Was there any advertisements leading up to the game? Anything the last week or month at least before it came out? The last time I remember seeing a trailer was the reveal one and that was what, nearly a year ago at this point? Game is fun, but if no one knew it was coming out then they aren't going to be getting many players.
You know anon, I think you may be right. I didn't notice it but her torso and waist when bisected by that belt of hers make for a similar looking yoyo like the one she uses. Honestly, her design is a little goofy, but for the most part I like it.

HER ARM THINGS ARE YOYOS TOO
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
IT'S YOYOS ALL THE WAY DOWN

Everything is yoyos with Penny. Got to give them credit for sticking to the bit.
I still think they could have done better in that regard. Its not immediately obvious enough right away because of her weird legs and toilet plunger feet and big yoyo hands and her weird fricking hat and hair. Theres far too much going on for her to just be a yoyo girl.

I dont mind the body so much. Reminds me a bit of Mischief Makers.
goddamn I hate gamers sometimes, something truly fresh comes along and it's too much for them to handle
>heh I love how people hate the game >wait wtf why do people hate the game this is so unfair
Pennygays have barely existed and their reputation is already a joke
>HURR PENNY IS UGLY >ignoring how well animated and polished everything in the game looks
morons on this board screech about SOUL and get a game filled with it and are too Black person brained to even appreciate it
have a nice day
hear me out: penny is ugly on purpose because she's supposed to stand out in the environment. the clashing colors ensure that she is always visible no matter what color palette they choose (because it's a very colorful game)
why is the character design so moronic
cba to try it because of the ugly looking mc
id rather play frogun or hat in time
atleast they have somewhat normal proportions
>try the game since its on tinfoil >not even an hour in to the game i get fricking softlocked on a stage because those weird ledges around the building have some sort of weird collision to them but you can't stand on them either so I just sat there and watched Penny spin for like 40 seconds before restarting
also like a lot of people have been saying it's an actual eyesore in a lot of departments
Don't get it twisted Freedom Planet just straight up stole Sonic's design they blatantly look like fan characters because they originally literally were.
I played like an hour of it but didn't like it much. It's too easy to lose control of your character because she'll do things like keep rolling after you let go of the roll button or dash off a cliff when you are trying to break things.
>keep rolling after you let go of the roll button
You don't need to keep holding it. >or dash off a cliff when you are trying to break things.
You're pressing the button twice to dash.
Flick the stick.
I’d say the real problem with those bits is that there’s basically no way to keep your combo going, like with certain bits like the popcorn lily pads you can spin to keep it going but with those you just get fricked
Pirated it, got annoyed at the 4 "agree to terms and conditions" screens, played until I got stuck in a fence after accidentally dashing into it, deleted it.
Should've expected trash considering they worked on Sonic Mania.
I hate to add on to the pile because I was very much looking forward to this game, but the art style is just abhorrent. I understand that they're trying to replicate a very specific Genesis aesthetic, but every character design makes me nauseous. It is very difficult to enjoy, which is a shame because the gameplay is quite fun.
the morons saying her design is dogshit obviously haven played the game, she's weird looking but she and the game as a whole are well animated and bouncy
It isn't. The animation of Sonic Forces is shit yet the characters look great. Why? Because animation is not character design and you are a fricking moron.
It makes me sad to say I don't think it's very good.
I want to support them after Mania but after playing it for a couple hours I don't see myself recommending it to my friends.
It makes me sad to say I don't think it's very good. There's not enough diversity, I saw not even one transgender in the game, no, instead I saw animal cruelty and dangerous activities on top of buildings. This could negatively influence children, so it's a no-no to me.
Besides that, the game is very hard to play, I couldn't even complete the first stage, I didn't know how to use that "yoyo" thing (what is even that name? Couldn't they just call it "jump ball or something?") and I also got stuck on a part you have to jump over a cliff and my acrofobia acted up.
So, unfortunately, I don't see myself recommending it to my friends.
What is with the contrarian shitposters repeating to themselves this game is bad? People love to come into actual discussion threads and say “buy an ad,” but nobody is calling this shit out.
Thanks anon. The combo system and cited inspiration from THPS were what I was most excited about and so far it's everything I hoped for
I was wondering how annoying it would be to fill combo an entire level
Since the multiplier maxes out at 5x it feels like they intended for you to keep up combos up until checkpoints at most
IIRC they said during the dev stream that the stages aren't strictly designed to be full-comboable but that someone on the team has done it on most of the stages anyway.

I’m a huge fan of the art. It has a flair of the Sonic CD-style pop art, but feels very in line with SEGA Saturn sensibilities. I think the art style is one of the best parts, feeling right in line with NiGHTs or Guardian Heroes.

Probably not. The MC looks just fricking stupid.
it's just about the worst damn character design I've ever seen. what is going on with the clothes/body? why the FRICK do its eyes look like this? what are those things at the corners of the eyes?
she's like the underdesigned cousin of this guy
>why the FRICK do its eyes look like this?
Because it's Sonic's mono-eye, but in reverse.
>what are those things at the corners of the eyes?
My best guess is clown makeup meant for the cheeks, but bled into the eyes due to extra runoff made by the previously mentioned design decision
Don't think for a minute that I'm defending this design, it's a mess, I'm just trying to explain it.
Yeah, holy frick she looks so bad. She looks like a clown out of a Goemon game, or something.
She's literally a clown, anon. That being said the design could've easily been streamlined to look coherent.
I'd say she more of a mutant hybrid of Marina Liteyears and Shantae.
Holy shit, what the frick were they thinking? Designing a mascot is the easiest shit to do
Then do it. Right now, let's see your great character design. No spending more than 20 minutes on it since it's so fricking easy to do you fricking b***h.
.t Whitehead
Your design is shit mate, just hire a professional rather than letting hack women do it next time
>DUDE IT'S SO EASY um but imnot going to prove it ok? I'm just not lol even though it's so easy lmao
You sure showed him!
There's no need to be upset, you fricked up and that's okay. Just don't forget to learn from it 🙂
Dude your design is so bad it literally will kill most of this games sales and you won't be hired again
Kek so the designer was really here
I dont know how to draw, but you really are a bad designer man
Cant blame people for choosing AI now if you keep designing cancer
Maybe you shouldn't be a designer
You even used purple and yellow yet the design is a mess unlike pic related
Fricking Palworld managed to make a lot of interesting designs
WRONG game freak made over a thousand great designs and palworld stole a bunch of them
Easy, I fixed the shit design in minutes.
Cute.
Needs bigger boobs
Exposed legs
Its cute though
I don't get it. You didn't "fix" her design so much as scale her up so she's no longer super deformed. Like yeah no shit she'd look this way if she weren't a chibi gremlin
its going for the "weird 90s genesis box art" look some games and characters had. i'm not sure anyone wanted it back though
Do none of these people understand marketability?
>skip good games because of a few character designs
Damn you guys are fricking stupid
>Undertail
>Hollow Knight.
>You will eat the bugs: The game
>Good Designs
You having shit tadte doesn't mean that games with good designs like Undertale and AHiT have bad designs. You're clearly in the extreme minority there.
Kek no I'm not, literally most of Ganker agrees with me and we laugh at morons like you. Every day we have threads fill the catalog talking about games we won't play because of how the characters look especially if it's ESG shit, you're in the minority because you're probably gay.
damn that sounds like fun
well I'm going to play video games now
No you won't, you'll stay in this thread replying to every response you get and seething that you tricked yourself into playing a shit game before realizing everyone else on this board hates it.
You're responding to multiple people, you psychopath.
The whole thread is shitting on this game
It very clearly isn't. Only a small handful of you are claiming the characters look bad, and the rest are talking about the game being fun and/or difficult, or begging for links to pirate the game. Several posts say they bought it or are planning to.
For the record, I don't intend to for a while. I'm playing through EO2 and next I'm grtting Unicorn Overlord. This I may pick up on sale some time in the future.
90% of the thread is complaints about visuals or bugs and the rest is shill cope damage control
Your problem was bibary thinking. The designs and aesthetics are bad, but the visual style still has its merits, and the game design is good.
And ad populum.
The visual style is definitely a holdover from when they thought they were making a 3D Sonic
Sort of. Classic Sonic games are somehow more detailed and less cluttered looking.
>most of Ganker agrees with me
Obviously not since it's just you and like 3 other people.
>the rest of that shit
This isn't about other games, it's about this game.
Thought same
Ganker really has no taste, huh?
I'm about to buy it yeah
Yeah I played it for 2 hours last night and it's really good so far.
30 dollars is too expensive for what it is. I will buy this on sale for like 10 or 15 dollars.
I wish I could see what sonicretro thinks about it but they're morons who lock the general gaming forum behind an account
They are jaded moronic man children who hate everything though so no use
i havent posted on sonicretro since sonic megamix was a thing, why would anyone give a shit about what those idiots think? well?
They'll probably wienersuck every dev just because it's Evening Star.
Alot of the issues with the controls get solved by just spinning(Jump into a spin to pick up an item)
>but I don't think it's gonna do well which sucks
Everything else looks significantly better than Balan, I'm talking about the mascot character itself.
Frontiers had a lot of effort put into it and Ganker shat all over it. You guys don't want 3D platformers, you just want to complain.
Frontiers had a lot of effort put into it and it was fricking shit. Shouldn't need to specify I want GOOD 3D platformers.
Frontiers was so good that even journos loved it.
Why the hell did it get shadowdropped? What were they thinking with that?
The last levels needing multiple 100+ combos is insane
Haha benis :DD
no
Ganker already made up several reasons why this game is supposedly "troony"
I don't know what kind of games these morons enjoy
>30 USD
>Shit character design
>I am not 12 y/o and I can see past the boring repetitive 3D collectathon gameplay
I pirated it and the movement isn't fun enough to carry this sort of game. Game was a big disappointment for me. Also why the frick did they make one of the bosses for gay foot fetishists?
Incidentally, that’s by far the best boss fight in the game and it’s still barely passable
Honestly the best boss was that giant penguin ball because it was just a level
Disgusting black creature, GET OUT OF MY SIGHT
wow speedtroons invaded FAST
the sheer degree of mental illness in this person
>She/Her
>No hate tolerated
every single time lol
Die, shill.
She outplayed you chud
It just seems that mental illness and gameplay skill are directly correlated.
I'm sane, though. Totally.
The level design reminds me of Sonic Adventure 1, but with Odyssey's platforming mechanics instead of the spin dash. Just the whole being able to go
>Yeah, frick this
And fly around massive sections of the level over the void
The colors in this game "hurt" my eyes. I don't know how to explain. It's not that they literally hurt, but it's like it causes discomfort or something. It's bizarre.
The closest thing I can use as a comparison is when the "chromatic aberration" effect is out of control and makes everything a bit confusing to the eye.
I think I found the explanation.
The game, to a lesser extent, generates the same type of visual discomfort in me as pic related.
Weird, it looks 3D
You're not alone. The choices in hues and intensity feel heavy on the eyes.
I get they want a dose of 90s pop sonic title card style, but they didn't pick the colors well.
Also, the main font they use is absolutely dogshit. The kerning in "CL EAR" especially pisses me off.
Am I the only one who likes the color pallet of the game?
I'm just unable to see what the character is doing in that post you are quoting
Is she bending? Is she moving har hand?
both
frick you homosexual
Maybe when I'm done with Spyro and Manhunt
This is the most visually unappealing game I've ever seen
VIDEO games are a visual medium, first and foremost.
>This is the most visually unappealing game I've ever seen
Have you seen starfield
Inaccurate, PBB does not contain dolphin rape.
and balan wonderworld have dildo flat platforms, BLM refereces and nazis everywhere?
>and balan wonderworld have dildo flat platforms, BLM refereces and nazis everywhere?
Does Penny's big breakaway?
Don't reply to it.
You already did it, twice.
That's a big reach.
I'll buy it once they fix the bugs.
schizos on the loose again
I wonder if big catch will get dumped on like this, that's pretty much the only other decent platformer coming out
Big catch doesn't look bad at all though and we already have the Noid 2 game to prove the game loop is fun.
Plus at least with the furry designs you can actually tell what the characters are supposed to be unlike Penny
If they dip too hard into the furry aspect I honestly probably won't play it at all honestly.
Furry designs in a platformer is inoffensive to me just because platformers are kind of one of the two home grounds of anthros. So long as they look and move goofy enough I don't really care. I don't kvetch over Crash Bandicoot, for example.
I know they're gay furries, but I wish they could throw in some cute girls.
Nah those character designs don't appeal to me at all. I'm tired of indie shit.
I like the yellow one with the pointy face and the angry eyes.
Not yet, I'm short on cash right now, but once I save up some more money I definitely will, probably next paycheck
Truly they were, a big breakaway.
porn when? They just had to make her ass massive
Canonically gets railed by an old fat moron.
We're all gonna make it, bros
Nice bulge
TORRENT?
Didn't realize there were so many poorgays interested in this game. I swear the fricking price seems to be the biggest point of contention for you morons.
Ganker is now horny turd worlders b***hing about games they can't afford trying to ruin everything for everyone else, and since they are poor and dumb they just play gacha and whatever is on gamepass. The board has honestly been ruined by non-americans. I can guarantee every single post crying about the game is a thirdie, we should bring /vint/ back.
I really miss when South Americans weren't fricking everywhere on the internet.
Hispachan had roughly 20 million posts over its lifespan and when it died in 2022 a discord was posted and all its users came here, so you have a bunch of apes coordinating on discord shitting up the board. Think about how much damage this has caused.
elon musk was right, nazis were a mistake.
>WAAAHHHH SPEND $40 FOR THE 3 HOUR LONG GAME CHUD
no?
It's 30
not everyone is a burgerclap
Everyone that matters is. If you aren't American keep it to yourself and wait for a torrent like the shitskin you are.
It's $30 and longer than any Nintendo or Sega platformer released in the last 20 years.
Sonic Frontiers is 20 hours long you moron
>WAAAAH THE GAME IS SHORT
Super Mario Bros has taken more quarters than you'll ever spend on games and you can beat it in under 6 minutes. I swear, kids these days don't understand what gaming is like. You think that if a game doesn't offer nipple circumference customization and a big skill tree, it isn't worth a few dollars. You would've lost every local Street Fighter tournament held in every arcade in the 90's.
>old graying boomer in charge of understanding monetary value
No wonder the economy is fricked with you guys growing up constantly spending money on bullshit
see
if the price drops before they fix them then so be it, should have released a working game then.
The issue is when every game is 30 dollars. I just bought palworld. Am I expected to buy this, last epoch, and helldivers also? Realistically you can only buy so many games. If everything releases at a high price point and I'm going to play it probably for like 4 hours at most i don't want to spend 30 dollars.
>last epoch, and helldivers also
Why would you buy 2 skinner boxes? There aren't exactly a lot of good games coming out. Maybe play less garbage.
Nkdshi
>I just bought palworld.
>I only play what the algorithm tells me is acceptable
>$30
>a lot
>even 20 years into 2 weeks of inflation
How fricking poor are you?
Are we genuinely complaining about $30 for a video game in current year? When AAA devs are adopting fricking $70 price tags? I know the game still needs a bit of polish but considering even those full price AAA games with massive dev times and dev teams still release in completely fricking broken states with the aforementioned $70 price tag, $30 from an indie dev hardly seems like a deal breaker. If you're not interested in the gameplay or whatever just say so. No need to be disingenuous when there are almost certainly games you'd be willing to shell out 30 bucks for.
>It's not bad because this other thing is so much worse
Weak argument
Using a comparison point isn't a weak argument. It's literally stronger than just saying $30 isn't bad because it just isn't. But I don't care to please you. You can go frick yourself for all I care.
>Weak argument is better than literally no argument at all
Yes, you are very smart.
What if Penny looked like this?
Looks worse
How does this look better?
Fix the eyes and nose, give fangs and a cleavage window, it will help tremendously.
worked for team cherry
>worked for team cherry
Who?
The men that designed this goddess.
And where is her game?
I bought the second Star Globe level and I don't get how the frick I'm supposed to get up there. I get the rings make it so you can jump and swing again, but how do you get enough height to get to the other rings?
Depends.
can Jump be mapped to A?
and can the yoyo be on a Face button instead of the just the analogue stick.
If not I wont even download.
jump and yoyo are already mapped to A and X as well as the trigger/thumbstick
sold.
not really, I'll pirate first but I'll think about it.
that's the default
>NSW2U nsp is broken
Any other links for the nsp?
>pirating the Switch version
Does the PC version have Denuvo or what?
>I wish it focused on speed and the combo system for point rankings instead of adding this Mario 3D World BS
It does moron
>It does moron
So when I go into story mode (where everyone will experience all the levels for the first time) it doesn't make you feel like shit if you don't stop in your tracks to do quests or find the big coins?
....
....
Oh wait.....
No it doesn't. You genuinely have a brain disorder. You are crying that the game has EXTRA content.
lol resorting to this.
I win yet again. The shitty collection gimmick is bad game design as it activity breaks you out of the Fun/Flow state the entire experience hinges on.
Hopefully my example of having better standards than you in my vidya can help with your brainrot.
Desu~
I accept your concession
confession denied
Sounds like a legitimate skill issue my man.
>....
homosexual alert
h
He's copy and pasting that shit. He was posting yesterday about how it's not focused on speed and the combo system as well, and then when it was pointed out that it has all the features he's claiming to want he started b***hing about the fact that it does have them.
>Penny
>those random ass buildings
>oversized teal feet
>toerings
I hate everything about the aesthetics about this game. Literally everything.
why do you keep posting reddit images
>reaction images belong to reddit
correct
why do you think we switched to soijaks
>reddit fortress 2
You haven't even been browsing Ganker for as long as that game has existed, tryhard.
Specifically the ones you post, yes.
That's an infamous/based Ganker schizopost that shits on current popular artstyles. That anon probably agrees with you.
That's a lot of BASED text. The mor you read, the more based you are.
>art is a language and despite any creative input, the laws of grammar and syntax apply to every language
>art, in layman's terms that you would understand, is an act of translation of the divine abstract of the human subconsciousness, in the tangible, articulated consciousness that can be understood and preserved throughout all space and time
Beyond based. I don't know why posters like that waste their time on Ganker.
I’ve only done the first world but
> The music gets grating as it repeats tracks too often.
Was definitely a choice. Why not just alter the track slightly as the levels progress? Shit was frustrating me especially because my gf started fricking singing along with it while I played in bed.
You don’t have one of those.
God I hate that teal homosexual's design so much, one of the biggest reasons why I'll never play this shit.
Christian Whitehead, I love you, but please get rid of all of the women in Evening Star and try again with an all-male team. Trust me.
just fix the design by giving it cleavage
Looks like a Treasure game which isn't necessarily a good thing
>game looks casual friendly on the surface
>constantly getting rekt by these challenges
My reason for not buying this game is that I just KNOW I will play it for one hour and get bored (I have ADHD). And even if by some miracle this wouldn't happen, $30 is too much. It's the same price I would pay for FIFTEEN snacks+drink. Not worth it.
Imagine being so fat
They shouldn't have turned down Sonic Mania 2.
>willingly going into the sega saltmines
Did Sega even offer that?
At least someone would be making decent Sonic games, then.
>Did Sega even offer that?
They've said they talked about it but creative differences meant it didn't go anywhere.
Always cutting corners and trying to make Sonic into a discount rack title while they just cross their fingers fans don't notice.
meant to link
there for the second part
I mean this games gameplay is good, it's just got a nasty calarts soulless look plastered over it, only good design here are the penguins
What? Am I not allowed to like the MC's design? That suddenly makes me a dev?
What exactly is wrong with Penny anyways? Based on this thread it seems like you just don't like her color scheme.
I don't know what other kind of person could deny that the game's aesthetic falls short of being appealing.
That is how it works, and it's created empires.
>game dev
>empire
Numales, it's not coincidence every old company that forbade women from creative positions while prioritizing quality became the biggest companies to exist. From nothing, to empires. Nor is it coincidence that they start to fail the more they circle back on that idea. See, Disney. Or even on a smaller scale, see, 80s and 90s game development. Before it was common practice to include women, the culture of game development was in a far better place than it is now.
>The game has a unique aesthetic.
I can appreciate that, but unique doesn't automatically translate to appealing. Especially not when its primary influence is the bauhaus movement.
>That is how it works, and it's created empires.
No it literally doesn't and you will sit around whining and being miserable while pining for some shit that never existed while you lose everything
The game has a unique aesthetic. It doesn't need to be attractive to you if it conveys what it's going for which is a surrealist carnival look.
The game looks identical to the Mania original zones... Like come on anon who are you fooling
Majority of the stages reuse the city look, there are good ones like the space one, penguin land and the final level
Bathhouse was the best world
it's only the character designs. the environments and colours are great.
They can be good, but they're severely held back by the bauhaus movement sensibilities, making everything look pretty flat and cluttered.
I'm the opposite. I'm fine with Pennys design but dislike the environmental colors as being a bit too noisy and contrast rich
Not him but her jumpsuit is fricking ugly, her hair is stupid, i can't tell whats she's even supposed to be because she's not wearing a jesters outfit.
Hell even the enemies don't make sense, why does this random strongman guy have an army of penguins? They aren't even buff penguins either.
Bowsers king of the turtles, Eggman builds his robots, Pig monster ganon summons monsters. This lack of thought about the designs radiates through the entire game, like why are the people robots in these normal cities? It's just a bunch of random bullshit stitched together, like no way did these guys make mania
>why does this random strongman guy have an army of penguins?
He's the emperor. Emperor penguins. That's all I got. Also he's a sumo wrestler or something I guess.
Was this made by the Hat in Time people? I felt the same way about that game, everything was very nonsensical. Here's this Mediterranean town with a Russian mafia, then you make movies for bird people and over all it was just very busy visually
>color scheme
The colors in general suck to the point you may as well play it in black and white
case in point
I tried a fix. If someone knows how to change the base color while preserving the lighting from the original you could probably make it look better.
I hate her Hazbin hotel nose
>Spot on. The core team's got heaps of talent, and I'd really love to see them flourish, not holding them back with misguided leadership
It doesn't work like that moron, your purity spiral will leave you with nothing
Was he right?
Yes but I'm buying two copies anyway for the gameplay.
Unfathomably based
>calarts soulless
I don't like most of the character designs in this but it's not calarts.
None of the designs in this game are calarts in style, what the frick are you smoking? Stop using words you don't understand.
The visual style is fine and Penny is very cute. I think these threads are full of doomerisms because you gays still have sour grapes from Superstars last year.
I just know that your house smells fricking weird and disgusting
>They just need to kick all the females from their team and try again with some real artists and developers on their side this time.
This.
Superstars was literal shovelware, not even worth talking about.
>No 100% reward
Gay, could have least slapped a thanks in there
Spent all my money this month on P3R Collectors and FF7 Part 2. I'll get it next month with Freedom Planet 2 hopefully.
>jrpgs
shaking my head to be honest family
>FF7R2
You couldn't spend your money on some GOOD games?
FF7R2 has babes in bikinis, that already makes it better than Penny's Big Breakaway from Good Character Design.
I will be waiting for a sale, probably would have payed full price if the main character's design didn't turn me off so much
The MC is black and female; no deal.
Hey which one of you morons said this game is supposed to look like Dynamite Headdy? It's very clearly mimicking the artstyle of Bonanza Bros.
BTW as a Jean Jacques Perrey fanboy, this game's soundtrack makes me C O O M. Very penis-y.
I didn't say it was supposed to, just that it reminded me of it.
>game is bad because I can't coom to the main character
Ganker proves its more of a shithole than ever before with each passing day
I can say it's a shit design without being spank material. I fricking love Luigi and his design is great but I've never jerked off to him.
>And other lies you can tell yourself.
Why should we care about designs that don't make us hard?
>mindbroken by a mediocre design for the player character
>great gameplay
>middling level design
>terrible cutscenes
>ugly design
>OST inconsistent going from great to background noise
>bosses are either so short its pointless or so boring you just want it to hurry up and be over
I'd give it a 6.5-7/10, its a decent game but needed more refinement, the levels blend together and nothing really sticks out in your head after beating them. the presentation is also inconsistent some animations look great while some look unfinished and the cutscenes are laughable. really doesn't have the polish I was expecting. not worth 30 dollars wait for a sale unless you really really love speedrunning levels and desperately need a new 3D platformer
>terrible cutscenes
Is this referring more to the in-engine cutscenes or the 2D cutscenes? The 3d ones were janky but the 2D ones seemed fine to me.
yes im talking about the in engine stuff, while I don't really like the art style the drawn cutscenes look fine for what they were going for
Why does a single player mid range game require consent to so much data mining?
For a small team to improve the game in a very focused way
>dash inputs dont work
>yoyo grappling only works half the time
>penny freaks the frick out on any type of ledges making the camera go nuts too
>auto targeting doesnt work too well either because objects are always placed in awkward positions where youre not sure you can just walk and yoyo to them or if you need to jump as well, which is 50/50 cuz penny sometimes just falls through and dies
>ship boss is just an awful design and i kept getting stuck between parts of the ship and flying out of bounds
>magician boss on the billiard table sometimes bugs out in the 2nd phase
This game was NOT ready.
Already past my refund time so I'll play Side Order and shit before I play it some more.
If you're going to do the shadowdrop meme, don't release a buggy mess. They dun goofed.
Legit I’ve lost runs because the gold pipes won’t react properly or Penny goes through a wall, it’s so bad
Should I draw her and/or Taboo obese?
yes
>nooo how dare they not use a pedobait as the main character
I mean it is still a young girl.
>cute little girl = pedobait = bad idea
>ugly little girl = not pedobait = good idea
You are deranged. Get off the internet for a year.
When will someone make a mod that replaces Penny with Sonic?
I'd be surprised if this isn't a thing already
>So... You'll buy my game if I do this? Well.. Okay...
>slurp slurp slurp
yeah, b***h you keep sipping on this shit off screen i don't care if you get a bellyache dumb prostitute
I like how the cup is right underneath her mouth the way that both posts are laid out
ebin
ebin
They should've made a next fest demo instead.
did they patch the bugs yet?
It's been two days so no.
I heard it's buggy so I'll wait
I'll probably get it this weekend
Frick off bots
>defending bugs
that's a new one
Sneed bait
did they try to make her look like the bad render of marina from the american mischief makers cover art?
So does the game ever elaborate on what penny IS? Sheep? Poodle? Cloud thing?
Sentient toy
A rapist
>left
a game that had a next fest demo made by literally who.
>right
a game that fell for the shadowdrop meme made by people with clout.
Ok
My moronic sonic autist turned vtuber friend unironically bought balatro instead penny because it was popular, i think i am going to remove them.
>30 dollars for Americans
>Over 50 dollars for me
Get me out of this country
>Australia
Where would you go?
So, what version should I pirate? I don't think the game is that good but I still want to give it a try. Is the Switch version too shitty?
None, wait for bug fixes.
Figure that out for yourself.
Nvm seems like the only cracked version is the PC one.
Going to try it out and maybe buy it if they announce a roadmap DLC or QoL updates
Switch version is 30fps in game but menus are 60. if it's a make or break for you then find the pc crack
where do you find cracks for new games
Go back to t*itter you fricking tourist.
You also need to be older than 18 to post here btw.
Damn dude chill tf out
So it seems the people saying levels weren't visually distinct were lying.
It feels too slow. Does the game have a turbo mode or speed power ups
Dive into a roll
What? If anything the game feels too fast, it's constantly rushing you through shit while you're still getting your bearings. The fricking tutorial level kicked my ass because I could barely get a hang of the controls while they're already throwing challenges at me.
>If anything the game feels too fast
Skill issue. Maybe something slower like Sonic Labyrinth could solve all your problems
Hey buddy the leather club is le over there or something
You forgot to throw in some additional buzzwords
Sonic Origins is ass while this is great...
A worthy sacrifice made by Taxman and his crew
This is the ugliest 3d platformer ever made, the character design is atrocious and the colors and art direction are vomit inducing. One could argue this is one of the worst main character designs ever made, it's impressive
>ugliest 3d platformer ever made
Said by a someone who hasn't played much of 3D platformers at all.
Ai generations look better than this
Good morning sirs.
What does she look like naked.
Like a shaved toy poodle
Post good music, it's by tee lopes right?
By him, Sean Bialo and even Christian Whitehead himself.
Here's my favorites.
It's really off-beat for what Tee Lopes usually does, and it definitely isn't as "dance-worthy" as Tee's work on Sonic but the tunes are very pleasant and distinct.
Gives off the vibes of an experimental 2007 wii game that was quickly forgotten.
>Went on Steam
>Very Positive ranking
>ALL of the top reviews are Negative
>Go on Ganker
>OP seems charitable
>EVERYONE talking shit
I literally shit myself when I realized the yoyo swing inherited all your momentum
no one on this board knows how to fricking play video games
Trying something new does not automatically make something good. They could have made just another Sonic game and it would have been ten times as good as Sloppy's Big Sloppaway.
Who gives a frick about the design when the gameplay is so fricking fun
You Black folk are moronic and don't play video games
Because nobody is going to play something with an ugly look
It’s not fun when the levels are repetitive and coping mechanisms of first level.
>Ganker is shitting on it
>meanwhile steam reviews are very positive
why is this board always wrong
Contrarianism never ceases here.
Also Ganker isn't one person either, people rarely >90% agree on something here.
beat the game last night, it was loads of fun. Gonna go back and get the rest of the Denizen missions and Stage Coins later, for now i'm playin Side Order.
No, it visually looks like shovelware, and Sonic Mania wasn't even that good. The game looks worse than Yooka Laylee if I'm being honest.
words by a Black person homosexual.
I'm not the one that forgot to add shadows to the environment in a 2024 video game
Shit opinion
It literally looks worse than GameCube shovelware like Billy Hatcher. Enjoy your slop.
>Slop buzzword
Bait maximus
When a nostalgia bait game gets 79% on Steam you know it's shit. Cavern of Dreams is a much better game and costs 1/3 the price.
Billy Hatcher is not shovelware. It's GOOD. But you didn't play it.
I rented it, it was crap. The only one of those shovelware platformers I ever beat when I rented it was Ty the Tasmanian Tiger.
please go on steam and downvote the negative reviews please let's help the Sonic mania devs please
It's not Sonic so I don't care.
The final boss kinda really sucks.. because its way too easy and kind of a joke.
Is it great? No. Am I having fun with it? Yes.
>Penny
>Rolling Rascal
Half the appeal of Sonic to sonicgays are the character designs. Why do these honorary sonic games frick up in that aspect?
Palworld is the only ripoff in years to understand that character designs sold what it was ripping off.
I wonder why the boss levels aren't available for time attack. It's not like they're too different from regular stages.
Bosses in this game really felt like a last minute addition
I still scratch my head about why Taboo Artist made King Eddie into a colossus.. it felt REALLY out of nowhere.
I think the idea was that after being defeated Eddie realized that he needed to work together with others to be a good performer so they all work together to put on a show power of friendship yadda yadda, but it happened so abruptly that I thought Tabuu had turned out to be evil (though I'd been expecting that since before the game came out anyway) and possessed him
It's funny how Ganker shits on this but praises Copy Kitty despite being one of of the ugliest indie games in existence.
>Copy Kitty
Never heard about this shit in my life
Ganker is not one person
you don't understand this is just like one of my shitty computer games from korea from 2005
What do you expect from a bunch of moronic furgays?
am I supposed to use the buttons or stick to throw the yoyo
Stick is only useful for the screws IMO
Ill get it when it goes on sale
>40 fricking dollars in my country
Fricking pass. who do these morons think they are?
and 60 on mine 🙁
Game's a little rough around the edges but it has immaculate flow
Speedrunners are gonna love this shit
i am a time attack enjoyer, not a speed troony, and I can confirm it is very fun
just wish the time attack restart was instant
If this was a mario game people would spam this webm for years like they did the "hat tech" in oddysey
>Press forward to win.
No thank you, what's the fricking point of having all those enemies and hazards if they can be bypassed this easily?
>The non ridiculous slope jumps
>The air drag
>How the dashs momentum is actually weighty and can't be controlled
The irony that penny is the first 3d platformer most similar to classic sonic.
Jesus tap dancing christ, I can already tell this will be popular with speedtrooners.
it already is
I don't understand how you're supposed to keep a combo going
does the game just want me to play like a fricking spastic and never touch the ground or always use the stupid ass roll even on tight platforms?
Turn penny white mod when?
Internally all the files seem to be in the same format as Sonic Mania's, .rsdk. You could probably use the same modding tools.
Nice
This looks worryingly close to Balanitis Wonderland.
Wtf is this game really 4 hours long?
4 and a half
I've played for over 10 hours and I haven't even finished the second world
More like 10.
This game is better than a hat in time
that's not saying as much as you think it does.
Nah, hat in time at least has dicky
penny is far more fun to actually play
It certainly feels more polished and tighter. Though I don't imagine Penny will see the same amount of love Hat Kid got.
I don't even have to play this to know that's a lie. AHiT was gold. This just looks tacky.
ahit had floaty shit ass weightless movement
this game has genuine momentum in 3d like no other platformer
it's like 3d umihara kawase
AHiT wasn't advertised as the next Sonic the hedgehog. It's not a momentum platformer and wasn't trying to be. But it still had tons of variety and interesting ideas. It's pretty obviously aiming to be more of an offbrand Mario 64.
Why do people say this game is similar to Sonic? It's nothing like any Sonic game at all
It's much more similar to Mario 3d world with the levels but with Mario Odyssey like mechanics
The only sonic thing about it is the ramps that let you build momentum with the roll
It's because of the movement and shit. There aren't a lot of 3D platforms that give you this feeling of liberty movement-wise, and since they are the ones that made Sonic Mania, the comparisons are just unavoidable
the yoyo is literally Cappy from Odyssey just with more in air momentum built into it
funny how this game is filtering morons who don't know how to actually play video games just like Odyssey did
Odyssey was for babies and zoomers
But Tendie, you are tryharding like a moron on an odyssey level there, trying to speedrun it or make it look fancy on purpose, meanwhile you can do shit like that with Penny's gameplay in a non-autistic way because that's how the game is meant to play. I doubt you can even make that same autistic clip in all the odyssey maps. But believe whatever makes you sleep at night
>kids game
>filtering anyone
Lol tendies are delusional
filtered low IQ brownoids
I like Odyssey but I still prefer SM64's moves. Cappy felt like unneeded complexity. I found myself constantly spamming the same hat-throw-dive-bounce-throw-dive move. It's like in the past a simple jump would suffice but now they spaced everything farther apart or capped (heh) his speed to make me use that combo repeatedly.
if you were ever doing simple jumping in 3d Mario you are playing the game wrong
Cappy is like Fludd, a crutch designed to make up for flaws in the level design.
It’s all about momentum. It’s like Sonic in non-superficial ways. The skill ceiling is much, much higher than any 3D Mario.
It reminds me more of Crash than Mario or Sonic
Fixed camera, focus on chaining actions, section where you get chased by a giant boulder, goofy looking MC that dances at the end of levels, the way secret areas are handled, etc.
crash has zero momentum at all
You could say the same about 3D Sonic
I would compare it to Kirby and the Forgotten Land, with how the camera behaves, just with an added focus on platforming.
are there any sonic references in the game?
it references sonic by being a bad game
The ground running speed seems too slow to be satisfying. Anyone want to try and convince me otherwise?
You're not supposed to run. You're supposed to ride.
I didn't even see that you can do that in the gameplay segment I saw.
Why the frick are you talking about the game when you haven't played it?
I'd like it to be slightly faster but it's clearly intentionally like that to encourage you to walk normally as little as possible
Game wants you to schmoove not stroll
>dicky
Of course I’ll get it. But I don’t even have money to right now. So hopefully friday
>sees short cartoony ass character
>hehe it's dicky!
so is this good or not?
lots of people on steam say the controls are bad
Hello, I am Ganker.
I think it is good.
I'm Ganker, these two posters are redditors
good morning sir I am Ganker and I think everything is bad
you should go out to the gym and be gay
Its just people being dumb and thinking the only way you can spin around is with the right stick
>Its just people being dumb and thinking the only way you can spin around is with the right stick
....you mean there's another way to spin? The right stick is the only button listed on the tutorial section on that whirl move.
Are you unironically so fricking stupid you didn't experiment with the controls?
Oh so you don't know either. Sorry I thought I was asking someone who knew how to play the game.
If you seriously didn't experiment with the controls for an hour at least figuring out everything you can do you need to fricking have a nice day and quit ruining video games for white people
Don't worry dude, someday you'll figure out how to use Whirl without spinning the R-stick!
>spending all this time trying to bait me into telling him how to do it
pathetic
Didn't read but sorry that happened to you.
Nah they're fine just unconventional, takes a little getting used to
Gameplay is so homogenized these days younger folk claim any game that doesn't control like the same 3 or so games they've been playing for the past 15 years has bad controls.
It can be easier to hit interactable objects with the sticks since you have a 360 degree range of angles to choose from rather than just directly in front of you. It's pretty niche though. For dashing and swinging you should exclusively use the buttons.
what button do you jump with and use the roll with
A and RT
Penny's big flop
Penis Big Breakaway
I think Ive seen that porn once
feat. Lorena Bobbit
We are poor. We don’t have enough to pay for Penny. We all just got Tomb Raider and we barely have enough for food as is.
Maybe fix your broken capitalism system before releasing a luxury product no one has money to pay for. We can’t eat, have a house, have a family.
I can't decide whether to use the sticks or buttons to play the game
someone help me I'm hopelessly autistic
Sticks offer more precision.
explain how
No, figure it out
>steal the silhouette of Aero the Acrobat
shameless
I love how much this game is filtering casual players so much
aside from a few collision bugs most of the "issues" people have with it are skill related. goddamn what a breath of fresh air.
its gonna be filtering a studio out of their jobs here pretty soon
goddamn I hate gamers sometimes, something truly fresh comes along and it's too much for them to handle
30 bucks for a sonic knockoff with ugly artstyle and no marketing is a steep ask.
if it makes you feel any better spark 3s all time peak was 160 and thats a lot better than this shit
>sonic knockoff
It's barely like sonic though.
>sonic knockoff
>ugly artstyle
bzzzt wrong
Was there any advertisements leading up to the game? Anything the last week or month at least before it came out? The last time I remember seeing a trailer was the reveal one and that was what, nearly a year ago at this point? Game is fun, but if no one knew it was coming out then they aren't going to be getting many players.
HOLY SHIT I JUST FIGURED IT OUT
HER BODY IS SHAPED LIKE A YOYO
But her fricking eyes, goddamn. Freaky as shit.
There was an animated trailer a couple months ago that showed off the bosses.
I learned it was coming out from Ganker and I was looking forward to this game ever since it was announced during the Nintendo Direct
>heh I love how people hate the game
>wait wtf why do people hate the game this is so unfair
Pennygays have barely existed and their reputation is already a joke
>HURR PENNY IS UGLY
>ignoring how well animated and polished everything in the game looks
morons on this board screech about SOUL and get a game filled with it and are too Black person brained to even appreciate it
have a nice day
>the ugly Black person clown with the Mickey Ds color scheme is well animated
WELL THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING! I TAKE IT BACK!
hear me out: penny is ugly on purpose because she's supposed to stand out in the environment. the clashing colors ensure that she is always visible no matter what color palette they choose (because it's a very colorful game)
why is the character design so moronic
cba to try it because of the ugly looking mc
id rather play frogun or hat in time
atleast they have somewhat normal proportions
These have to be the ugliest designs I've ever seen in a modern vidya
Should I be using the right stick to yoyo or should I be using the button? Genuinely unsure which feels better to me.
>ruined Origins
>now this
Mrania team was always a one trick pony.
>try the game since its on tinfoil
>not even an hour in to the game i get fricking softlocked on a stage because those weird ledges around the building have some sort of weird collision to them but you can't stand on them either so I just sat there and watched Penny spin for like 40 seconds before restarting
also like a lot of people have been saying it's an actual eyesore in a lot of departments
Why do I need to scroll through 3 fricking user agreements for a fricking console game
I'll 100% play this if it comes to Gamepass, price is a bit steep
>see b***hing about spinning
>buy game
>spin like I do with Cappy in Odyssey
>she spins
Maybe the shills are right and you guys are just morons.
So, think they're going to be supporting and adding stuff later on down the line?
what the hell is it with sonic-like games and ugly character design? I haven't seen a single good looking character since probably freedom planet
She's doing the breasts and ass pose despite neither being visible
The whole game feels like forced soul.
Don't get it twisted Freedom Planet just straight up stole Sonic's design they blatantly look like fan characters because they originally literally were.
The only reason Penny is ugly because they're trying to stop porn, if you make a good looking character more people will jack off than play your game
Could you post some examples of characters we might jack off to so we know what to avoid?
Why are Sonic fans always making games to one up Sega but completely missing the point of what makes Sonic good in the first place?
you mean character design?
this is the opposite of sonic, where the character design has mass unappeal but the gameplay is pure ludo
They can't just put porn of Amy Rose and Cream the Rabbit in their game anon it would raise the age rating and probably be copyright infringement
>first momentum-based 3D platformer with wonky pop art and music to match
I’d say Taxman understands Sonic better than SEGA ever did.
>ctrl-f catbox
>zero results
I am VERY disappointed in you, Ganker.
You aren't owed free games. Find it yourself like everyone else did.
Frick off Black person, catbox is for porn.
sneed autism, easy peasy exists
I played like an hour of it but didn't like it much. It's too easy to lose control of your character because she'll do things like keep rolling after you let go of the roll button or dash off a cliff when you are trying to break things.
>keep rolling after you let go of the roll button
You don't need to keep holding it.
>or dash off a cliff when you are trying to break things.
You're pressing the button twice to dash.
Skill issue.
They group breakable things close together but if you press the attack button twice you get launched away, this is a design issue.
Yeah, God designed you wrong
Flick the stick.
I’d say the real problem with those bits is that there’s basically no way to keep your combo going, like with certain bits like the popcorn lily pads you can spin to keep it going but with those you just get fricked
Pirated it, got annoyed at the 4 "agree to terms and conditions" screens, played until I got stuck in a fence after accidentally dashing into it, deleted it.
Should've expected trash considering they worked on Sonic Mania.
I don't know why people complain about the music, it's fine for two acts
>act three starts
Why is it still playing
I hate to add on to the pile because I was very much looking forward to this game, but the art style is just abhorrent. I understand that they're trying to replicate a very specific Genesis aesthetic, but every character design makes me nauseous. It is very difficult to enjoy, which is a shame because the gameplay is quite fun.
Anyone read the EULA? Steam forums claim it says it data mines your entire PC like it's fricking Valorent or something.
I think the character design looks like ass tbqh.
I think Penny's kinda cute tbh
In like a moronic puppy kinda way
the morons saying her design is dogshit obviously haven played the game, she's weird looking but she and the game as a whole are well animated and bouncy
Animation =/= design
You're so moronic it hurts
animation is a huge part of a character model, are you fricking moronic?
It isn't. The animation of Sonic Forces is shit yet the characters look great. Why? Because animation is not character design and you are a fricking moron.
Yeah i like Pennys design. The bosses however are irredeemable
>several threads up
>450 posts in this thread alone
>barely 100 people playing the game
HMMM...
>several
where
It seems, well, troonyish for lack of a better term.
You've got to find a new lens to view the world. It's been over 8 years and still all you can think of is trannies. Trannies. For over EIGHT YEARS.
trannies have a rented skyscraper inside most Ganker anons' head.
no shame in just hiring naoto oshima to do the art
I like the music, didn't know taxman had those licks
Still waiting for someone to make a mod that fixes the design and reveals the large amount of stuff hidden beneath those clothes.
They look baggy, but i'm sure there's no spare room under those garbs at all
Why you not control the camera. bleh. a no for me.
yeah I'd have given right anolog camera control and mapped the yoyo spins to L/R. there's no need for multiple jump buttons
esl
It makes me sad to say I don't think it's very good.
I want to support them after Mania but after playing it for a couple hours I don't see myself recommending it to my friends.
what a useless post
Maybe the beloved mania team aren't so great after all
>Deliberate falseflagging shitpost thread is going to reach bump limit despite being up half as long as this one
I'm getting bubsy 3d vibes from this which is good
These later stages are really not fun to get the score for, lots of annoying fricking platforms to slip off
you will never be her
I guess the question is: Why does Penny look awful but Marina work so well?
My guess is the hat. Penny's hat looks ridiculous.
My second guess are the shoes
the NPCs have funny dialogue
What is with the contrarian shitposters repeating to themselves this game is bad? People love to come into actual discussion threads and say “buy an ad,” but nobody is calling this shit out.

I like this game
This is cool as hell, anon. I think this illustrates exactly why this game is so special.
Thanks anon. The combo system and cited inspiration from THPS were what I was most excited about and so far it's everything I hoped for
IIRC they said during the dev stream that the stages aren't strictly designed to be full-comboable but that someone on the team has done it on most of the stages anyway.
why isn't there a score attack mode?
I was wondering how annoying it would be to fill combo an entire level
Since the multiplier maxes out at 5x it feels like they intended for you to keep up combos up until checkpoints at most
Post this whenever anyone tries to talk shit in a future thread please
is there any way for you to encode this into a 4mb webm
I can try when I get home later.
Great question.
I really like the aesthetic too.
I love this game, even if the aesthetic kind of sucks.
I’m a huge fan of the art. It has a flair of the Sonic CD-style pop art, but feels very in line with SEGA Saturn sensibilities. I think the art style is one of the best parts, feeling right in line with NiGHTs or Guardian Heroes.
Ehhh, not really, those games aren't allergic to natural feeling things. Penny's world feels like it's made out of Chinese plastic.
