To a degree perhaps, but wagies are also responsible for the company they choose to work for and the israelitery their labor enables. No whistleblowers from the company came forward about insider trading. No one came forward to decry the botnets and monetizations shit they're currently embedding in the engine to mine off players. No one leaked these announcements that surely someone other than the CEO and the board must have known. Everyone that knew those things and did nothing is condoning this shit with their apathy and share some responsibility.

All that said, death threats is the most Black personly way to protest and you just enable Shlomo and Tomer and the CEO to hide behind crocodile tears and crafting a narrative that it's only gamergoobers and far-rightoids upset and "you'll pay the sloptax to not be bigots like them, right goyim?"

working in customer facing jobs is stressful for me BECAUSE I know I'm the one who gets all the bullshit consequences from what head office does.
As a result, I was very hard on my managers and bosses when it came to decisions made by the company and how it effects us.
I was ignored constantly, and quit when the location manager (who never fricking leaves his office) implied I was lying about a recent moronic decision, and then defended his actions to his boss by saying "head office sends material and the employees put them out, I don't see them". His boss accepted this excuse. I walked out.

They give us no other recourse. Unethical middle men rent seeking behavior to maximize profits results in more bills. It's even part of tipflation. Every corner, every method, everything you use can flip a switch and ask for payment for whatever they can call a "service". And they can call anything a service. Medical, housing, transportation, even fricking ticketmaster has made everyone poorer.

This is the most deranged and nonsensical part. If it ONLY affected games released past date where it starts, it would still be extremely scummy and shitty, but devs would be able to just put out the games they're currently working on before that date and switch to a different engine.
If they go through with this and DON'T retract it being retroactive, you can expect to see many Unity games disappearing from stores.

only because almost all of them are not real game developers, they only know how to use Unity, only know how to THINK in Unity. anyone who's a remotely competent programmer can easily migrate to something else—it's only the drooling morons who think that throwing shit at a wall until it sticks then throwing it up on Steam constitutes "game development" who are fricked—as they should be.

I hate that Unity has redefined what "game engine" means to most people. they think it means "thing that lets you make a game with a fancy visual dev environment that lets you piece together your game logic using high-level abstractions", such that when they jump ship from Unity, they look around for Godot et al. instead of realizing maybe it's time to make something "from scratch" (where "from scratch" means, using SDL or something, not even necessarily doing the super low-level yourself) and learn how to actually harness a fraction of the power of the computer you're using instead of letting it all go to waste because you refuse to learn anything lower-level than "what if I made some Entities and put some Components on them and then made Prefabs of these Entities so I can spawn them over and over again? woohoo, look at me mom, I'm a real game developer!"

I've played plenty of Unity games that didn't have bugs in them. I had zero bugs or crashes with Blasphemous 2 recently. Yeah they could probably run a little better if you micro manage the memory but Unity games are often smaller in scope anyways and the garbage collector does a decent enough job.

garbage collection is insanely overkill for video games. just use a per-frame temporary bump/arena allocator for all the random crap you need allocated each frame, and put ten seconds of thought into what kinda memory you need to allocate where and when for the rest (on game load, on level load, etc.). it really couldn't be easier, but everyone just wants to pretend like "manual memory management" is this impossible-to-learn super obscure thing, when it's really not. it's incredibly simple.

Have you made a game engine? How long did it take?

                Anonymous

yes, several, all small and suited for the task of making the game or experiment I was trying to make. all you need is a game loop with a frame limiter (easy), some way of loading/unloading assets if your game uses them (easy), and then a means of taking input (easy) and drawing to the screen (easy). then, like I keep saying, you want a temporary per-frame bump allocator so you don't need garbage collection (easy).

maybe you want a particle system, or some kind of level/scene transition system. slightly more involved, but still dead simple. maybe you want a simple entity system—slightly more involved, but still, really, easy.

the "engine" is not difficult to make at all. the hard part comes from figuring out what kind of game you make, and how to structure your logic to make it work, and work well, but the latter naturally arises from the former.

when I was in school like a decade ago, Unity was all the rage, so the game engines I worked on back then were trying to emulate Unity's entity-component system dogma, and the end result was a codebase that was so overly complicated for such a simple game that it was beyond moronic. just write the code you need, don't obsess over generic abstractions for everything. if you have to make a new component type and then make a new entity and attach said component to said entity just to add a bit of logic to your game, your engine is moronic, and you should feel bad, because you're wasting so much time and energy on something that should be dead fricking simple.

you have two options: 1.) learn how those things work and implement them yourself, or 2.) find some code someone else has written and made freely available to use, and use it. or, you can always 3.) find someone who actually knows how to program to do it for you.

regardless, it shouldn't take you longer than a weekend, once you know what you're doing. there is so much knowledge available at your fingertips yet you want to cry like a baby because the work isn't done and ready to go for you, such that all you have to do is plop your assets in and have everything work automatically? and you call yourself a game developer?!

So what if I want a 3rd person shooter similar to RE4? It would take a few months (for me, anyways) to make a simple 2D game. But a 3D game made in the fashion I want… well I dont really like the idea of trying to tackle that

                Anonymous

getting basic 3D untextured cubes rendered is pretty easy.
adding a third-person camera is pretty easy. adding 3D "physics" for character movement (i.e., not real physics) is pretty easy.
getting 3D meshes rendering is pretty easy.
getting rigged, animated 3D meshes rendering isn't the easiest thing but as I said above you can do it yourself or find someone else's code that already does it.

the hard part is getting your level-rendering to work efficiently. but, making a simple RE4 clone where you're in a box of a room, controlling a box, shooting at other boxes, with a RE4-style camera, is really, really not that difficult. especially with something like SDL or raylib.

years and years ago I wanted to make a Persona 3–4 clone, insofar as overworld movement and JRPG/VN dialogue system. it was easy. I'm not an artist at all, but I had differently-colored boxes for characters, which even had a smaller box for a head, and NPC heads rotate to look at you when you get close (within a reasonable angle), like in Persona. I'd never done anything in 3D before—took me like a weekend. super straightforward.

you can do it anon, I believe in you.

its for all games with unity, games that have been released already some for several years.
its one thing if its for every new game or a game midway through development you cut your losses and make/find a new engine, However its retroactively applying to games already released meaning you are going to be forced to pay for this retroactive bullshit or turn your hard work into abandonware and pull it from whatever store its on.

if it were me I'd pull it off stores and then make a public message to encourage the fans to pirate the game in protest.

And also, every time you demand evidence and someone actually tries to provide it, it's usually something like
      >why don't you jump in a fire and have a nice day, homosexual?
Because apparently asking someone to do it for you is a threat to do it yourself.

And those same people will then go on to get ACTUAL death threats which will be claimed to not represent the entire group. Even though you can put together literally hundreds of examples and they had to play make believe to find still not evidence.

Unreal is still more expensive than Unity for anyone making over a mil, even after Unity's changes
Tim is probably happy that Unity is driving its customers away, and he'd be a moron to ruin this moment by turning away new prospective users by adding some moronic 'trust us' type fee to unreal.

and the unreal license doesn't allow for retroactive changes anyways

Tim is in a position to benefit massively if unity goes through with this, so he’s keeping very quiet.
Unity commits suicide then Timmy gets a bunch of devs that jump onto his ship.

yes, or, use any of the myriad solutions out there. either way, learn what goes into actually making a game, instead of using a garbage-collected language to write bad glue code for a shitty entity/component system to cobble basic functionality together while having the gall to call yourself a "game developer"

make a 2D basic game in C using SDL or something, there's a billion tutorials and examples out there. don't worry about entities and components and whatnot, just store stuff in arrays, or data structures that are light abstractions on top of arrays. use a bump/arena "temporary storage" allocator that resets each frame instead of garbage collection. all of this is dead fricking simple but nobody teaches it anymore because they want you locked into bullshit like Unity.

making simple games is not difficult. you can do a lot with very little. you just have to give up the fancy visual editor and high-level abstractions you learned, and start thinking about what the computer is actually doing, which used to be a GIVEN for game development, before it became this hipster fashionable "inclusive" thing that "anyone can do".

so basically if you don't know how to program but want to create a game you can't and should not use tools that are there for you to make games without learning how to code
            sounds moronic

yeah pretty much. just learn to code you moron it's not difficult.

best of luck friend, if you keep things simple and don't go overboard trying to overgeneralize or overabstract everything you'll have a great time making a simple game and building upon it.

it really isn't. how do you think games were made for decades before Unity came about? you don't have to go full "I'll do the OpenGL/Vulkan shit myself" route, just use something like SDL. it really is not nearly as hard as you think it is.

Some people assume John did this on purpose to tank Unity's stock since he just sold his, so that he can buy the dip and make even more when the stock goes back up
Which I mean, the theory holds up except for the small caveat that comparies are legally obligated to act in the interest of stockholders. If you act to intentionally short stock, they can sue you out of existence. It's way too big of a risk, if the company doesn't bounce back they'll be out for your blood. I think it was the opposite, John honestly believed devs would just sit there and take it because what are they gonna do, go to unity and pay their licensing fees?

this isn't true no matter how much the internet repeats it. there is no legal obligation
there is a defacto obligation in almost all public companies because otherwise the board will likely remove those who don't act in the shareholders' interests (because then the shareholders will likely replace the board, and the board is usually also made up of shareholders), but it is most definitely not a legal requirement

Lol, okay. I typed "game developer openings" into google and this was the very first thing that popped up. Pretty much every game engine, including Unity and Unreal, is written in C++ and any serious programming job will require understanding it. And even if a programming job doesn't directly use C++, you are much more likely to be hired if you have experience in it because it shows you're a real programmer

pointers aren't scary anon nut the frick up and stop relying on garbage collection when a temporary per-frame bump allocator does the same thing for a fraction of the overhead and with no microstuttering GC pauses. video games run on computers, computers have memory—it's your job to manage that memory.

That's true, but you're mostly working with similar higher-level abstractions in them as with any game engine. At least in my company, it's mostly separate people actually developing the in-house engine vs. the ones primarily focused on making the games. Sure there is some overlap, but nowhere near making games with just C++ without an engine.

yea I'm not an engineer so I just use high level abstractions anyways but if you did have C++ knowledge and wanted to only focus on programming then it would transfer, but yea that kind of job is just doing engine work and not design.

there's nothing "specialized" about pretending that garbage collection is a good idea, or pretending that programmers don't need to know how fricking computers fricking work in order to fricking program them. this sort of thinking is destroying the industry by making morons think they can just slap some shit together and call it "making a game" and "being a game developer", when it's not.

even if you think everything else I'm saying is hyperbole (it's not): there is absolutely zero excuse to be a Unity C# programmer and not know the difference between a struct and a class, and when to use one over the other. bare fricking minimum.

I've played plenty of Unity games that didn't have bugs in them. I had zero bugs or crashes with Blasphemous 2 recently. Yeah they could probably run a little better if you micro manage the memory but Unity games are often smaller in scope anyways and the garbage collector does a decent enough job.

Shut up, homosexual. If the guy made a game, he's a game developer, no matter what you think.
But I agree that these other homosexuals should at least evaluate their options before they go installing Unity.
It's not as if only geniuses can make things from scratch. There are several games that seem to me to be made by normal people (not geniuses) that don't use any engine, like that retro FPS that was released recently, or Andrew's Crystal Project.

                Anonymous

anon please tell me you don't consider "people" who "make" "games" with Twine to be game developers as well, because that's the logic you're using here, and it's moronic.

if you're using a garbage-collected language, you're not a real game developer, you're a baby who's scared of pointers—sorry, but I don't make the rules, computer hardware designers do.

                Anonymous

The term "game developer" already has its meaning embedded in it. You're a homosexual because you want your personal opinion to change the meaning of those words. A game developer, for you, is not the guy who "develops games", but the guy who crosses some kind of arbitrary line of programming proficiency.
I have no patience with this kind of thinking, it seems like a woman's thing to me and I'm fed up with pretending to take women's opinions seriously.

                Anonymous

wrong, it's you who is thinking like a woman, because you're using baby Fisher-Price toy tools to make games and you're getting upset like the little girl you are when someone tells you that your plastic hammer isn't a real hammer. "game developer" meant something for decades until you gays came in and decided that playing with toys constituted the same level of work that all your predecessors did, such that you can call yourself by the same title without feeling embarrassed.

game developers understand the computers that they're making games to run on, such that they can do a good job of making a solid product. game developers don't think in entities and components, they think in memory and functions.

if anyone's being the woman here, it's definitely you, because what could be more modern-woman-like than taking credit for something you didn't even put the effort in to do properly, just because you're a woman?

and it's all come home to roost now that your toys are being taken away, and you're left with no real knowledge about how to do anything, because all you learned was how to think in the closed-source high-level abstractions of a shitty tool for babies and girls and trannies. get rekt son—buckle up and learn how to code for real.

You seem awful smug in your superiority but do you even have anything to show for it? You made games with your own engine? And by games I dont mean little experiments with particles or moving around with static images, I mean actual games. Ones with end goals or actual gameplay that are more than simple button clicking or moving in some undefined and untextured space

                Anonymous

yes, though only 2D, I have never published any 3D games (yet), aside from one that was "3D" but procedural wireframe vector graphics, no actual meshes/animations.

why do you remain defensive when faced with the fact that you know nothing about making games outside of how to use a tool that has just become completely unviable to use? you can learn, anon, I believe in you. but to do so you must discard the methods and paradigms you were used to working with, and seek to actually know what goes in to making a game, rather than seeking refuge in higher-level tool-specific abstractions.

this is your last chance. after this, there is no turning back. you take the blue Godot pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe that game development entails whatever you want to be. you take the red pill - you stay in Actual Game Development Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

I'm gonna break out this pasta

Don't waste your time. If you really want to make a game worth half a shit this is precisely what you must do:

First, get a standard calculus text and dive in. You should also get linear algebra and discrete math books as well; make sure the discrete text is proof based.

Once you're a couple chapters in to your discrete book (you will want to have covered basic proposition and higher order logic, and basic proofs), you may begin learning programming and computer architecture. As a litmus test, if you don't know what this statement is

                ∀P((0∈P∧∀i(i∈P-->i+1∈P))-->∀n(n∈P))

you aren't ready to take the reins of a computer.

Now, forget what you do know about computer programming:

First, you learn boolean logic operations
                then, you learn transistor logic
then, you learn how to build functional units from logic gates
                then, you learn CPU design
then, and only then, you learn assembly language
then, after you have mastered assembly language (not dabbled, but mastered it), you learn C
then, after you have mastered C, you may learn the higher-level languages of your choice, but you will always use C and assembly as your primary languages because everything else is unnecessary bloat.

By this time you should be finished with your first wave of math and ready for the next: abstract algebra, analysis, multivariate and vector calculus, and, after you have progressed a way in those, topology.

Finally, you become familiar with topoi, and study the internal logic of categories
then familiarize yourself with (general) type theory, and its applications to programming. I also recommend studying how to reformulate mathematics in terms of globular categories for use in automatic theorem proving, because there is an inherent programming-like 'feel' to it.

cope of a pasta. you start with Unity or Game Maker or RPG Maker like a baby, then you go learn how to make a game with C/SDL, then you dabble in asm from there. all you need to do. it's not hard. it's just harder than cobbling together a barely-playable game with Unity.

Unity is widely used for mobile games, and mobile games are a separate thing that probably make more money than all the consoles combined. Now add to that the fact that this multi-billion market is very established in shitholes like China, India, and other corners of the world, where they abuse the system by making dozens of low effort shitty games every day to try and get a few dollars out of each one...
I believe that Unity has received threats, but it's not the "gamers", it's the mafias behind this market that is comparable to drug trafficking that operate in the shadows in third world countries and will be heavily impacted if their shitty games that need to be disseminated on millions of mobile devices to make money start costing them $0.20 a copy.

Either he said that, or he assumed that he has the mentality of a child and isn't fit to talk to adults, something he obviously can't do.
In any case, these types of people only have a chance in environments where they find no opposition.

The funniest part of all this will be when all these small time devs waste their time moving to other proprietary engines and realize they will be paying more than they would by sticking with unity

This might seem like a moronic question, but how will Unity track this data? If I’m using an older version of Unity to make a game and sell it, how will they know when its installed and whatnot?

Yeah, I don't think they actually have a proprietary data model.
Imagine the internal state of the company right now.
        >PR wasn't consulted, scrambling madly to calm the lynch mobs down
        >programmers weren't consulted, becoming increasingly desperate in their attempts to explain to the executives that their plan isn't technologically possible

i am curious if you can bypass the revenue detection shit by making your game fully f2p and only taking donations on patreon or something

that's the business model i'm thinking of going for, if at all applicable

        Anonymous

You easily could. As long as the game itself isn’t making revenue, Unity can’t do shit about it. Of course, it means taking a huge hit to profit, most people wouldnt pay if they dont have to, but it would definitely be a workaround

          >Of course, it means taking a huge hit to profit
well, the way i see it, the biggest obstacle for people to try your game is the cost. a game being free is a huge boon to getting people to try out your stuff for an hour or two. i don't really mind the hit in profits, since i'm more concerned about people actually getting into the game in the first place. also i hate microtransactions and all the other f2p models that exist.

i'll look into this more to make sure it's really foolproof

        Anonymous

Problem with that is one player on a f2p title does not equal one donation equal to the price of the game.
You'll go out of business, there's only so far people will go to protest these decisions.
I think putting a Unity game out for "free" but locked behind a kay or unlocker that you sell for the price of the game is the way to go.
It's probably illegal, but I say let Unity take you to court for it with their own bullshit retroactive fee scam. Then we'll see who's actually harming others.

          Anonymous

i wouldn't be doing it as a business. just a side project motivated by hubris (using any proceeds to improve the game, if any)
