my PS1 games are all pinholing and some have stopped working. Most of my old gameboy games with save systems have dead batteries. My N64 carts are on their last legs.
You have "maybe they will take away your license AND maybe there won't be any cracked copies online, and THEN what?" as your killer argument.

To a degree perhaps, but wagies are also responsible for the company they choose to work for and the garden gnomery their labor enables. No whistleblowers from the company came forward about insider trading. No one came forward to decry the botnets and monetizations shit they're currently embedding in the engine to mine off players. No one leaked these announcements that surely someone other than the CEO and the board must have known. Everyone that knew those things and did nothing is condoning this shit with their apathy and share some responsibility.
All that said, death threats is the most moronly way to protest and you just enable Shlomo and Tomer and the CEO to hide behind crocodile tears and crafting a narrative that it's only gamergoobers and far-rightoids upset and "you'll pay the sloptax to not be bigots like them, right goyim?"
>To a degree perhaps, but wagies are also responsible for the company they choose to work for and the garden gnomery their labor enables.
Exactly, how do people think "just following orders" is still a defense.

TurboNEET hands typed this post.
I typed that on break at my nice job I started at the beginning of the year after I left my last company in December because they were morally bankrupt and bad actors in their industry. Also sent anonymous tips to regulatory agencies. What's your excuse, Shlomo?

The people working for shitholes like unity are living in expensive cities and can't just walk away from a paycheck.
Now's the part where you go "oh they're city LIBRULS and deserve it". Chop chop, show me your programming you miserable fucking bot.
working in customer facing jobs is stressful for me BECAUSE I know I'm the one who gets all the bullshit consequences from what head office does.
As a result, I was very hard on my managers and bosses when it came to decisions made by the company and how it effects us.
I was ignored constantly, and quit when the location manager (who never fucking leaves his office) implied I was lying about a recent retarded decision, and then defended his actions to his boss by saying "head office sends material and the employees put them out, I don't see them". His boss accepted this excuse. I walked out.
wagies that ignore or accept shitty decisions made by their employers deserve to be treated poorly by the customers
They give us no other recourse. Unethical middle men rent seeking behavior to maximize profits results in more bills. It's even part of tipflation. Every corner, every method, everything you use can flip a switch and ask for payment for whatever they can call a "service". And they can call anything a service. Medical, housing, transportation, even fucking ticketmaster has made everyone poorer.

Bald rat
This should unironically be more common. People will bitch about capitalism and how corporations will always fuck you over but then when consumers try to take matters into their own hands they bitch too
This is the most deranged and nonsensical part. If it ONLY affected games released past date where it starts, it would still be extremely scummy and shitty, but devs would be able to just put out the games they're currently working on before that date and switch to a different engine.
If they go through with this and DON'T retract it being retroactive, you can expect to see many Unity games disappearing from stores.
only because almost all of them are not real game developers, they only know how to use Unity, only know how to THINK in Unity. anyone who's a remotely competent programmer can easily migrate to something else—it's only the drooling retards who think that throwing shit at a wall until it sticks then throwing it up on Steam constitutes "game development" who are fucked—as they should be.
so basically if you don't know how to program but want to create a game you can't and should not use tools that are there for you to make games without learning how to code
sounds retarded
I hate that Unity has redefined what "game engine" means to most people. they think it means "thing that lets you make a game with a fancy visual dev environment that lets you piece together your game logic using high-level abstractions", such that when they jump ship from Unity, they look around for Godot et al. instead of realizing maybe it's time to make something "from scratch" (where "from scratch" means, using SDL or something, not even necessarily doing the super low-level yourself) and learn how to actually harness a fraction of the power of the computer you're using instead of letting it all go to waste because you refuse to learn anything lower-level than "what if I made some Entities and put some Components on them and then made Prefabs of these Entities so I can spawn them over and over again? woohoo, look at me mom, I'm a real game developer!"
I've played plenty of Unity games that didn't have bugs in them. I had zero bugs or crashes with Blasphemous 2 recently. Yeah they could probably run a little better if you micro manage the memory but Unity games are often smaller in scope anyways and the garbage collector does a decent enough job.
garbage collection is insanely overkill for video games. just use a per-frame temporary bump/arena allocator for all the random crap you need allocated each frame, and put ten seconds of thought into what kinda memory you need to allocate where and when for the rest (on game load, on level load, etc.). it really couldn't be easier, but everyone just wants to pretend like "manual memory management" is this impossible-to-learn super obscure thing, when it's really not. it's incredibly simple.

Have you made a game engine? How long did it take?
Anonymous
yes, several, all small and suited for the task of making the game or experiment I was trying to make. all you need is a game loop with a frame limiter (easy), some way of loading/unloading assets if your game uses them (easy), and then a means of taking input (easy) and drawing to the screen (easy). then, like I keep saying, you want a temporary per-frame bump allocator so you don't need garbage collection (easy).
maybe you want a particle system, or some kind of level/scene transition system. slightly more involved, but still dead simple. maybe you want a simple entity system—slightly more involved, but still, really, easy.
the "engine" is not difficult to make at all. the hard part comes from figuring out what kind of game you make, and how to structure your logic to make it work, and work well, but the latter naturally arises from the former.
when I was in school like a decade ago, Unity was all the rage, so the game engines I worked on back then were trying to emulate Unity's entity-component system dogma, and the end result was a codebase that was so overly complicated for such a simple game that it was beyond retarded. just write the code you need, don't obsess over generic abstractions for everything. if you have to make a new component type and then make a new entity and attach said component to said entity just to add a bit of logic to your game, your engine is retarded, and you should feel bad, because you're wasting so much time and energy on something that should be dead fucking simple.

you have two options: 1.) learn how those things work and implement them yourself, or 2.) find some code someone else has written and made freely available to use, and use it. or, you can always 3.) find someone who actually knows how to program to do it for you.
regardless, it shouldn't take you longer than a weekend, once you know what you're doing. there is so much knowledge available at your fingertips yet you want to cry like a baby because the work isn't done and ready to go for you, such that all you have to do is plop your assets in and have everything work automatically? and you call yourself a game developer?!

So what if I want a 3rd person shooter similar to RE4? It would take a few months (for me, anyways) to make a simple 2D game. But a 3D game made in the fashion I want… well I dont really like the idea of trying to tackle that
2 weeks ago
Anonymous
getting basic 3D untextured cubes rendered is pretty easy.
adding a third-person camera is pretty easy. adding 3D "physics" for character movement (i.e., not real physics) is pretty easy.
getting 3D meshes rendering is pretty easy.
getting rigged, animated 3D meshes rendering isn't the easiest thing but as I said above you can do it yourself or find someone else's code that already does it.
the hard part is getting your level-rendering to work efficiently. but, making a simple RE4 clone where you're in a box of a room, controlling a box, shooting at other boxes, with a RE4-style camera, is really, really not that difficult. especially with something like SDL or raylib.
years and years ago I wanted to make a Persona 3–4 clone, insofar as overworld movement and JRPG/VN dialogue system. it was easy. I'm not an artist at all, but I had differently-colored boxes for characters, which even had a smaller box for a head, and NPC heads rotate to look at you when you get close (within a reasonable angle), like in Persona. I'd never done anything in 3D before—took me like a weekend. super straightforward.
its for all games with unity, games that have been released already some for several years.
its one thing if its for every new game or a game midway through development you cut your losses and make/find a new engine, However its retroactively applying to games already released meaning you are going to be forced to pay for this retroactive bullshit or turn your hard work into abandonware and pull it from whatever store its on.
if it were me I'd pull it off stores and then make a public message to encourage the fans to pirate the game in protest.
Karryn's Prison was made in RPGMaker.
Summer and Winter Memories also made in RPGMaker.
Coomers haven't lost anything aside from their future children.
>how long until they pull the antisemitism card
they need to. they need to take every single liberal progressive devloper and toss them into the anti-semite boat, ensuring they're isolated from their side for being an anti-semite, and hated by the other side, who they called every ist and phobe out there.
Being an antisemite makes you more popular with gamers, not less
It's always the same shit.
These people like to hide behind the "muh death threat" -lie.
All their messages regarding most controversial parts of the new pricing has amounted to "trust me bro" as is.
It's the perfect storm for anyone to actually lobby death threats towards them because why should anyone believe them
And also, every time you demand evidence and someone actually tries to provide it, it's usually something like >why don't you jump in a fire and have a nice day, gay?
Because apparently asking someone to do it for you is a threat to do it yourself.
And those same people will then go on to get ACTUAL death threats which will be claimed to not represent the entire group. Even though you can put together literally hundreds of examples and they had to play make believe to find still not evidence.
The last time I remember a journo producing "proof" she was getting death threats for being a brave strong wymyn it was quickly revealed through her own shitty track covering that she sent the death threats to herself to invent a story and gain sympathy.
Proof or it didn’t happen. Death threats are the easiest way to gain sympathy and PR types have known this for a long time now. They never provide any actual proof for some convenient reason.
>Death threats
This has never happened. At least for video games
Come on, anons. Do you GENUINELY think that not a single person with Unity got a DM from some autist on twitter? People use death threats and kys as fucking punctuation at this point. Yes this is being played up for PR spin. Yes I'm betting it wasn't/they weren't credible. But don't resort to garden gnomery just like them. When you deny the painfully obvious you give them ammo to do the same.
have a nice day is not a death threat. "I am going to come to your house and kill you" is a death threat, and yes, I genuinely believe they received nothing resembling that.
Unless I see unity employees get assaulted or nearly assassinated in public. Or a real letter saying they will kill them over the unity fees and that they should watch their backs I refuse to believe it
>death threats are only death threats if they are scribbled out with pen and paper and/or if they are followed up on with actual targeted violence
You two don't actually believe this and simply see admitting the plainly obvious as some imaginary concession. When Unity spokespeople INEVITABLY go on a media circuit about this and churn up the anti-semitic and gamergate rhetoric, you only have yourself to blame once the thoughtless masses buy into it. This is "cutting off your nose to spite your face" levels of short-sightedness.
>This is "cutting off your nose to spite your face" levels of short-sightedness.
thanks for summarizing your post for me.
you replied to someone saying "kys isn't a death threat" with "REEEEE SO YOU WON'T ACCEPT IT UNTIL PEOPLE ARE HURT?". You are the one fucking yourself
Unless I see unity employees get assaulted or nearly assassinated in public. Or a real letter saying they will kill them over the unity fees and that they should watch their backs I refuse to believe it
Literally EVERYONE does this whenever they receive any kind of controversy.
They immediately run to social media and claim they've received death threats (Because they probably have, if you haven't gotten a death threat online, then you haven't used the internet) and then use that to reframe the controversy.
I wouldn't be surprised if It's officially apart of most PR crisis handbooks at this point.
The internet always eats it up every single time too.
i believe two things are true
1.) people do make death threats out of anger which is stupid and does nothing
2.) companies use this to their advantage to gain sympathy and to try and paint all of the backlash as unreasonable
So what youre saying is. If trolls send unity an endless amount of death threats, indie devs will be forced to choke down a shotgun blast? Thst sounds like a good plan anon. Devs should pay .60 per launch.
Is anyone surprised? Some studios will probably face bankruptcy if this scheme goes through. Imagine your lifework getting ruined because you put your trust in some greedy cunt. Whatever next it's not that weird that some would want to enforce some retribution here before moving on.
>company does something greedy and stupid >wildly unpopular, outrage ensues >company uses media to claim death threats are happening to get all the good little soi slaves to defend the company
its funny they're pulling that card this time because I think they fucked up so royally that they don't even have any goyim who will come to defend them
Why wasn't this garden gnome ran out of town when he claimed to have known Blizzard was a """toxic""" place for literal 10+ years but just chose not to report on it, framed against his career long claim that he reports to protect the workers in the industry?
>John "too gnomish for EA" Riccitello becomes CEO of Unity >Wants to charge 20c per install of every Unity game >Wording is abstract, literal "trust me, bro" wording, pirated copies may count, installing and reinstalling may lead to extra charges, this last part can be automated through a script to prank developers >Applies retroactively to every existing Unity game starting January 1st (probably illegal)
merchants got a little too happy, now people don't want to do business with unity. "in case of emergency break glass" protocol has been initiated, next news cycle and possibly next gamergate ensues. i doubt the last part will happen but it would be so funny if it did
they tried to turn paid mods into a "omg those fuckin entitled gamers don't want to support the heckin modderinos" so you can bet your ass they'll try it here
>Unity is going to start charging money from developers who use it >also going to retroactively charge money from developers who have used it in the past >the only legal basis for this is a clause in the EULA that says they might change the EULA in the future >the way they intend to enforce this is some unknown black box technology that supposedly lets them count every time a game is installed, even if it's a pirate copy
I also heard a rumour that shortly before all this went down, the CEO of Unity sold a lot of his stock in the company, which would be a criminal act. I don't have a proper source for that, though.
>the pic that held the names of every board member having a firesale with their shares before the news broke
Subtlety is no longer needed in a world where things just get sillier by the day.
>I also heard a rumour that shortly before all this went down, the CEO of Unity sold a lot of his stock in the company, which would be a criminal act. I don't have a proper source for that, though.
It would be if it wasn’t for the fact he did it two weeks before they made this announcement. Apparently that’s the bare minimum amount of time to avoid being investigated for insider trading in the USA
that's nice and all but I need Yong's hot take on this situation preferably with at least three references to his hotshot career as a real voice actor "in the industry"
Unreal is still more expensive than Unity for anyone making over a mil, even after Unity's changes
Tim is probably happy that Unity is driving its customers away, and he'd be a retard to ruin this moment by turning away new prospective users by adding some retarded 'trust us' type fee to unreal.
and the unreal license doesn't allow for retroactive changes anyways
Tim is in a position to benefit massively if unity goes through with this, so he’s keeping very quiet.
Unity commits suicide then Timmy gets a bunch of devs that jump onto his ship.
Never interrupt an enemy making a mistake.
yes, or, use any of the myriad solutions out there. either way, learn what goes into actually making a game, instead of using a garbage-collected language to write bad glue code for a shitty entity/component system to cobble basic functionality together while having the gall to call yourself a "game developer"
make a 2D basic game in C using SDL or something, there's a billion tutorials and examples out there. don't worry about entities and components and whatnot, just store stuff in arrays, or data structures that are light abstractions on top of arrays. use a bump/arena "temporary storage" allocator that resets each frame instead of garbage collection. all of this is dead fucking simple but nobody teaches it anymore because they want you locked into bullshit like Unity.
making simple games is not difficult. you can do a lot with very little. you just have to give up the fancy visual editor and high-level abstractions you learned, and start thinking about what the computer is actually doing, which used to be a GIVEN for game development, before it became this hipster fashionable "inclusive" thing that "anyone can do".
so basically if you don't know how to program but want to create a game you can't and should not use tools that are there for you to make games without learning how to code
sounds retarded
yeah pretty much. just learn to code you retard it's not difficult.
>making simple games is not difficult
it takes a lot of time just to code the basics right, if you want anything more complex, good luck coding that without experience
game engine figures that out for you
thanks b, always wanted to make a game without any engine or third-party programms.

best of luck friend, if you keep things simple and don't go overboard trying to overgeneralize or overabstract everything you'll have a great time making a simple game and building upon it.
>making simple games is not difficult

it really isn't. how do you think games were made for decades before Unity came about? you don't have to go full "I'll do the OpenGL/Vulkan shit myself" route, just use something like SDL. it really is not nearly as hard as you think it is.

>shows that this is completely normal selling
The game is rigged anon these fucks come on board (either by giving cash or jerking someone off) and sell every few months until they run out of shares.
i blame genshin impact for this.
unity garden gnomes must have been shaking as they watched the chinese make literally billions every year and wondered how they could get even a slice of the profits
Some people assume John did this on purpose to tank Unity's stock since he just sold his, so that he can buy the dip and make even more when the stock goes back up
Which I mean, the theory holds up except for the small caveat that comparies are legally obligated to act in the interest of stockholders. If you act to intentionally short stock, they can sue you out of existence. It's way too big of a risk, if the company doesn't bounce back they'll be out for your blood. I think it was the opposite, John honestly believed devs would just sit there and take it because what are they gonna do, go to unity and pay their licensing fees?
>except for the small caveat that comparies are legally obligated to act in the interest of stockholders.
garden gnomes are above the law. He will get away with it.
>comparies are legally obligated to act in the interest of stockholders
this isn't true no matter how much the internet repeats it. there is no legal obligation
there is a defacto obligation in almost all public companies because otherwise the board will likely remove those who don't act in the shareholders' interests (because then the shareholders will likely replace the board, and the board is usually also made up of shareholders), but it is most definitely not a legal requirement
this is called consumer engineering and it happens in most markets and it's one of big reasons why everything becomes more and more shit
planned obsolescence is a direct result of this bullshit
>the CEO claimed that paying per bullet was great for the future of gaming

Sorry if i feel no sympathy for the CEO of Unity and the board of directors.
it's almost like you and they weren't learning almost any transferrable skills at all and instead everything you think you know about game development is just learning the specific set of high-level abstractions that only make sense in the context of using a closed-source product that can (and did lol) fuck you over whenever they felt like it.
time to buckle up and learn you some real game development like a man. or, bitch out and stop pretending to have ever been a game developer. which path will you choose?
Too bad you need to use these commercial lock-in tools in pretty much any relevant dev job, unless you take the indie pill and hopefully won't bleed all your money looking for that next unicorn of a game.
Pretty much all big and stable dev jobs use either Unity, Epic, or some in-house engine with their specific abstractions. You won't find a job writing video games with just C++, mate. No matter how much you or I wish we could.

Lol, okay. I typed "game developer openings" into google and this was the very first thing that popped up. Pretty much every game engine, including Unity and Unreal, is written in C++ and any serious programming job will require understanding it. And even if a programming job doesn't directly use C++, you are much more likely to be hired if you have experience in it because it shows you're a real programmer

That's true, but you're mostly working with similar higher-level abstractions in them as with any game engine. At least in my company, it's mostly separate people actually developing the in-house engine vs. the ones primarily focused on making the games. Sure there is some overlap, but nowhere near making games with just C++ without an engine.

yea I'm not an engineer so I just use high level abstractions anyways but if you did have C++ knowledge and wanted to only focus on programming then it would transfer, but yea that kind of job is just doing engine work and not design.
Youre a real cunt huh? Where the fuck is your game? Have you considered the fact that even though I can program, I dont feel like makin an entire engine to run it? You speak big, but I highly doubt you could do what youre telling others to do.
aw, is the widdle baby throwing an angry widdle tantrum because someone told him he's not a real game developer for using his Fisher-Price My First Game Engine to "make" a "game"? :DDDD
yes. absolutely. 99.999% of people are not real game developers. 95% of "game developers" are not real game developers, just babies making a mess of components and spaghetti C# code. 95% of them don't even know the difference between a struct and a class in C#.

there's nothing "specialized" about pretending that garbage collection is a good idea, or pretending that programmers don't need to know how fucking computers fucking work in order to fucking program them. this sort of thinking is destroying the industry by making retards think they can just slap some shit together and call it "making a game" and "being a game developer", when it's not.
even if you think everything else I'm saying is hyperbole (it's not): there is absolutely zero excuse to be a Unity C# programmer and not know the difference between a struct and a class, and when to use one over the other. bare fucking minimum.

Shut up, gay. If the guy made a game, he's a game developer, no matter what you think.
But I agree that these other gays should at least evaluate their options before they go installing Unity.
It's not as if only geniuses can make things from scratch. There are several games that seem to me to be made by normal people (not geniuses) that don't use any engine, like that retro FPS that was released recently, or Andrew's Crystal Project.

The term "game developer" already has its meaning embedded in it. You're a gay because you want your personal opinion to change the meaning of those words. A game developer, for you, is not the guy who "develops games", but the guy who crosses some kind of arbitrary line of programming proficiency.

wrong, it's you who is thinking like a woman, because you're using baby Fisher-Price toy tools to make games and you're getting upset like the little girl you are when someone tells you that your plastic hammer isn't a real hammer. "game developer" meant something for decades until you fags came in and decided that playing with toys constituted the same level of work that all your predecessors did, such that you can call yourself by the same title without feeling embarrassed.
game developers understand the computers that they're making games to run on, such that they can do a good job of making a solid product. game developers don't think in entities and components, they think in memory and functions.
if anyone's being the woman here, it's definitely you, because what could be more modern-woman-like than taking credit for something you didn't even put the effort in to do properly, just because you're a woman?
and it's all come home to roost now that your toys are being taken away, and you're left with no real knowledge about how to do anything, because all you learned was how to think in the closed-source high-level abstractions of a shitty tool for babies and girls and trannies. get rekt son—buckle up and learn how to code for real.

You seem awful smug in your superiority but do you even have anything to show for it? You made games with your own engine? And by games I dont mean little experiments with particles or moving around with static images, I mean actual games. Ones with end goals or actual gameplay that are more than simple button clicking or moving in some undefined and untextured space

yes, though only 2D, I have never published any 3D games (yet), aside from one that was "3D" but procedural wireframe vector graphics, no actual meshes/animations.
why do you remain defensive when faced with the fact that you know nothing about making games outside of how to use a tool that has just become completely unviable to use? you can learn, anon, I believe in you. but to do so you must discard the methods and paradigms you were used to working with, and seek to actually know what goes in to making a game, rather than seeking refuge in higher-level tool-specific abstractions.
this is your last chance. after this, there is no turning back. you take the blue Godot pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe that game development entails whatever you want to be. you take the red pill - you stay in Actual Game Development Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

I'm gonna break out this pasta
Don't waste your time. If you really want to make a game worth half a shit this is precisely what you must do:
First, get a standard calculus text and dive in. You should also get linear algebra and discrete math books as well; make sure the discrete text is proof based.
Once you're a couple chapters in to your discrete book (you will want to have covered basic proposition and higher order logic, and basic proofs), you may begin learning programming and computer architecture. As a litmus test, if you don't know what this statement is
∀P((0∈P∧∀i(i∈P-->i+1∈P))-->∀n(n∈P))
you aren't ready to take the reins of a computer.
Now, forget what you do know about computer programming:
First, you learn boolean logic operations
then, you learn transistor logic
then, you learn how to build functional units from logic gates
then, you learn CPU design
then, and only then, you learn assembly language
then, after you have mastered assembly language (not dabbled, but mastered it), you learn C
then, after you have mastered C, you may learn the higher-level languages of your choice, but you will always use C and assembly as your primary languages because everything else is unnecessary bloat.
By this time you should be finished with your first wave of math and ready for the next: abstract algebra, analysis, multivariate and vector calculus, and, after you have progressed a way in those, topology.
Finally, you become familiar with topoi, and study the internal logic of categories
then familiarize yourself with (general) type theory, and its applications to programming. I also recommend studying how to reformulate mathematics in terms of globular categories for use in automatic theorem proving, because there is an inherent programming-like 'feel' to it.

cope of a pasta. you start with Unity or Game Maker or RPG Maker like a baby, then you go learn how to make a game with C/SDL, then you dabble in asm from there. all you need to do. it's not hard. it's just harder than cobbling together a barely-playable game with Unity.

since you must have clearly mastered all this you must have made the best damn game known to man i humbly ask you if i can play it
>muh death threats
Never actually happens and even then who gives a fuck? Has anyone ever even attempted to follow up on these "death threats"? >a bloo bloo bloo some random dickhead said he's gonna kill me
Get over yourself you fucking baby, I'm sure that rando has no intention of actually doing anything.
Sounds legit and also a little deserved. Make money literally anywhere else. Can't they fucking business deal some cut on microtransactions or sales or some shit. Hell, they technically outed themselves as spyware cuz of this. How retarded can they be.
>Hell, they technically outed themselves as spyware cuz of this.
Lol everything Israel touches is spyware.
Even Intel processors.
You don’t need to be anti-semitic to know this.
>make a ton of shovelware garbage copypasting mechanics from his wrestling trash to his pseudo-rpg trash and vice versa >hasn't improved anything in decades >AI alone ins incompetent >wonders why everyone pirates his shit
lmao
>psyop'd into defending microtransactions because le devs bad
You can hate furry game that's actually an allegory for depression #4324284 all you like, but plenty of well known devs and games use unity, and their recent change is simply retarded. If they merely charged for games bought (lets say, take 5-10%) no one would have given a shit. It's the weird install thing people care about.
I'd say right wingers have more people who are willing to go all the way but left has considerably more amount of crazies who pull of stunts and waste their lives in pursuit of these shit
extreme right wingers try to solo 5 ATF agents in the woods and die kek
>I'd say right wingers have more people who are willing to go all the way
You're not wrong but rightoids tend to be fringe schizos acting alone while leftoids hide behind black bloc and act as a riotous group
The guy fucked with a whole bunch of people's livelihoods earlier this week and he and his board have been doing blatant insider trading for other a year. Death threats is childish shit zoomers say but the guy is an unfettered piece of shit.
>Death threats is childish shit zoomers say but the guy is an unfettered piece of shit.
It's actually a time-honored tradition of angry and mentally ill people stretching all the way back to time immemorial. Sometimes they're entirely deserved, too, like in this scenario. That guy's head should be rolling across the floor.
>install, 20c >uninstall >install 20c again >repeat how many times you want >dev has to pay unity more than what you paid for the game initially
Valve takes portion of the purchase, not a fucking install.
The only reason to listen to this gay journo is cuz he does have real connections. Too bad he's such an ass human being that I can barely trust his gay words.
Proof or it didn’t happen. Death threats are the easiest way to gain sympathy and PR types have known this for a long time now. They never provide any actual proof for some convenient reason.
>to gain sympathy
would you really suddenly sympathize with him if he got an email saying "i will fucking gut you if i see you on the streets you soulless pos"
NPCs have the attention span of, well, NPCs. What do you think? Their emotions get toyed like they're marionettes. Look at this thread, you can see who are the NPCs when they don't even know the CEO of Unity tried to pull off similar stunts while in EA.
>there have been no death threats against anyone at Unity, they're lying to try and garner sympathy
HOWEVER >there should have been death threats against Unity, and if someone killed their CEO it would be a net positive for the world
You get what you fucking deserve.
This retard is equating teenage trolls with organized crime.
Unity is widely used for mobile games, and mobile games are a separate thing that probably make more money than all the consoles combined. Now add to that the fact that this multi-billion market is very established in shitholes like China, India, and other corners of the world, where they abuse the system by making dozens of low effort shitty games every day to try and get a few dollars out of each one...
I believe that Unity has received threats, but it's not the "gamers", it's the mafias behind this market that is comparable to drug trafficking that operate in the shadows in third world countries and will be heavily impacted if their shitty games that need to be disseminated on millions of mobile devices to make money start costing them $0.20 a copy.
Or send it to the police. Or do something other than claim on twitter without providing evidence just in an effort to play the victim card.
How come the police NEVER hear any of those credible death threats that have all these people (sorry, garden gnomes) running for their lives all the time? How come they never see the letters, the emails, the public social media posts? It's always "trust us, THE DANGER IS REAL"?
I do web and mobile and only make things that make money, the rest of my time is spent with my family and developing the land I bought for food production.
>do something evil that causes people to send you death threats >receive death threats >act surprised and upset that this happened
maybe be less evil and you wouldn't get death threats maybe?
Either he said that, or he assumed that he has the mentality of a child and isn't fit to talk to adults, something he obviously can't do.
In any case, these types of people only have a chance in environments where they find no opposition.
The funniest part of all this will be when all these small time devs waste their time moving to other proprietary engines and realize they will be paying more than they would by sticking with unity
This might seem like a retarded question, but how will Unity track this data? If I’m using an older version of Unity to make a game and sell it, how will they know when its installed and whatnot?
Yeah, I don't think they actually have a proprietary data model.
Imagine the internal state of the company right now. >PR wasn't consulted, scrambling madly to calm the lynch mobs down >programmers weren't consulted, becoming increasingly desperate in their attempts to explain to the executives that their plan isn't technologically possible >legal department wasn't consulted, quietly updating their resumes
>make a death threat against CoD devs for changing the meta >crickets >make a credible death threat against Unity sutis for fucking everything up >crickets >make an obviously fake death threat to rabid feminist who's trying to destroy gaming >full spectrum media attention, FBI investigation, she gets invite to the UN
If this shit was always free this would be a different story, but these mother fuckers are still charging no less than $2000 per seat in professional licenses.
>Release game for free >Game cant be played unless the player buys a file from you thats the same price as what you were originally going to charge for the game. >Game doesn’t make any revenue, therefor bypassing the $200,000 requirement.
You easily could. As long as the game itself isn’t making revenue, Unity can’t do shit about it. Of course, it means taking a huge hit to profit, most people wouldnt pay if they dont have to, but it would definitely be a workaround
>Of course, it means taking a huge hit to profit
well, the way i see it, the biggest obstacle for people to try your game is the cost. a game being free is a huge boon to getting people to try out your stuff for an hour or two. i don't really mind the hit in profits, since i'm more concerned about people actually getting into the game in the first place. also i hate microtransactions and all the other f2p models that exist.
i'll look into this more to make sure it's really foolproof
Problem with that is one player on a f2p title does not equal one donation equal to the price of the game.
You'll go out of business, there's only so far people will go to protest these decisions.
I think putting a Unity game out for "free" but locked behind a kay or unlocker that you sell for the price of the game is the way to go.
It's probably illegal, but I say let Unity take you to court for it with their own bullshit retroactive fee scam. Then we'll see who's actually harming others.
Unity thing is awful by par to course for any major corporation and I dont understand why people act shocked when greedy company still act greedy at the end of the day.
what the fuck is wrong with people thinking corporations are on their side?
Tech employees are the softest motherfuckers in existence, if you're not getting a credible death threat in person at least once a week are you even really in danger? Get real
Good. This should happen more often.
Will you still be laughing when limited number of installs per game purchase becomes the norm?
You fucking bet I will
this image would be better if it had brief instructions for piracy to help zoomers get started
>go to archive dot org
>???
>
>tells zoomies to get groomed on their chudcords
best instructions for them
Sure but what about my achievements? I gotta keep my 50% completion rate.
This, what's the point of beating a game if I can't show everybody online that I did?
Corporate greed is what led me to piracy recently. I've just kind of had it with Modern America as a whole. I can't afford my fucking bills or food, so fuck it. Not gonna give up one of the few hobbies that can sometimes make me happy. Adobe can suck my phat fucking cock, I'm not gonna stop making videos either
We're all gonna make it
i'm constantly telling americans on discord to go to the rutracker.org and make an account but they're too afraid
i'm doing it for you. every fucking time I get cozy and comfortable on some form of piracy or emulation or whatever site, it gets shut down.
If I stay away, it remains in perpetuity. Thank me.
yes, because I pirate, and now I've gained reason to pirate even more
>laughs in secuROM and other 00s DRM
You're late to the show, kid.
I said norm, not obscure PSX/PS1 tier factoid no-one cares about anymore.
You actual retard
I pirate and I dev on ue5 under a permanent unchangeable license
purchase?
>back when youtube had stars and a billion views was considered a ludicrous number people used as a placeholder for "a shit ton"
>how do we salvage this shitty situation and win back some much needed PR?
>I know lets fuck over the consumer even more! Its not like they can get their fix elsewhere....
This paintrain doesn't stop until she flies right through the station and headfirst down a cliff.
Will they still be fucking with us when the market crashes?
Remember when people memed on Physical buyers?
I literally don't, unless it was people obviously pretending to be retarded.
Physical buyers had install-limiting DRM too anon.
my PS1 games are all pinholing and some have stopped working. Most of my old gameboy games with save systems have dead batteries. My N64 carts are on their last legs.
You have "maybe they will take away your license AND maybe there won't be any cracked copies online, and THEN what?" as your killer argument.
I have guaranteed entropy as mine.
>time comes for everything
>some greedy cunt can revoke my access to things I purchased whenever he wants and without warning
Great argument gay.
That's what you get with SaaS
gosh, you know, I'm pretty sure there was a portion of my post that addressed that. Try reading it again and re-submitting your reply.
>merely pretending
>cracked copies online
nobody can take your digital games away from you, anon. They can take away the one-click mod support, they can take away automatic updates, but your game will always be available.
corroded metal is corroded metal.
And I will continue to laugh at you, retard.
Enjoy your decrepit and decaying DRM locked physical data that you can't even transfer across systems meanwhile I have 4 different backups for all my cracked, free vidya collection that I can move around with no effort
See you're thinking ahead, but unfortunately for you
Theres always a person whose two steps ahead
They didnt do it here but they were still the most obnoxious retarded cunts out there
Literally could not comprehend worst case scenarios where they could take games away from you
Your PC stops working taking the game with it to electronic hell
How about instead trying to find money by fucking over customers you can just trim the fat by cutting the bloat in your company.
>Will you still be laughing when limited number of installs per game purchase becomes the norm?
or dont? seems very simple solution
kill the capitalist and the commie
You Vill limit installs to safe the climate.
This. Greedy corp should fear the little man.
chud!
Silence, garden gnome.
chud!
chuds are corporate
Verification not required.
Trannies and leftoids are the biggest corpo bootlickers there are.
Funnily enough, if anyone's getting death threats, it tends to be from this sort of guys.
It's easy to make death threats when you're a protected class.
I'm surprised and disappointed mass shootings in tech are so rare
ok fed
Retard
Glowies working hard today
Honestly yeah. That's the only way these top % guys ever take anyone poor seriously. (poor is anyone not on their level)
There's no point in attacking the wagecucks though. Going after the CEO and shareholder is the only solution
That's antisemitic
Exactly, how do people think "just following orders" is still a defense.
>if they were innocent they'd quit their jobs in a climate where getting a job is difficult because everything is back to downsizing and outsourcing
TurboNEET hands typed this post.
ah, so you defend people being craven cowards turning on each other for a slice of bread? excellent!
I typed that on break at my nice job I started at the beginning of the year after I left my last company in December because they were morally bankrupt and bad actors in their industry. Also sent anonymous tips to regulatory agencies. What's your excuse, Shlomo?
>you're gnomish because you don't risk homelessness
Online threats are meaningless. Wake me up when there's real world terrorizing and assassination attempts on Unity executives.
>This should happen more often.
Wrong. Instead of threats there should be actual deaths (of ceos)
This. Gamers have been spineless for too long. It's about time some action was taken.
Hmm wonder ((why)) Schreier would be so keen on reporting this
Jason "I knew about Blizzard raping people but didn't do anything about it and instead get mad at european developers for being too white lol" Schreier
As if Jason "I'm a sniveling, hacky video game journalist" Schreier wasn't bad enough.
explain further
Actually curious, elaborate?
That's it. He knew for years about all the blizzard shit, definitely from the second hand sources and maybe 1st hand, but since blizzard is kosher he chose to not report on it and instead kept covering some inane bullshit like muh crunch.
anyone who gives this cuck any respect or time of day deserves anything they get
Jason "giant tits and hips with a cute face is e-boicon" Schreier
how long until they pull the antisemitism card
Hopefully soon, so it becomes clear just how many people are openly antisemetic now. I want the garden gnomes to be afraid.
>how long until they pull the antisemitism card
they need to. they need to take every single liberal progressive devloper and toss them into the anti-semite boat, ensuring they're isolated from their side for being an anti-semite, and hated by the other side, who they called every ist and phobe out there.
I can't believe white extremists would threaten unity
game devs are just entitled man babies
>muh death threats goys!
And people believe this tripe? Boy who cried wolf.
>death threats
>that we’ll never post proof of
CDPR did the same thing with their “death threats” the got after delaying Cyberpunk. It’s all a bullshit cover they use to look like victims.
I seriously don't know how anyone can believe this shit anymore. It's seriously so obvious they don't even try
Yeah, seems like a cop out so they can "go dark" for the rest of the week and don't have to keep addressing posts on the forums and twitter.
There's retards in this very thread that believe that they actually got credible death threats.
Telling someone to kys here probably count as a death threat. So does posting the navy seal pasta.
>be company
>make awful decision
>theres backlash
>try to shift yourself into the good guy by lying about death threats
>lying about death threats
Yup. This is the second most common lie assholes on the internet make to deflect their own bullshit.
First is women crying about rape threats.
>jason "if you like big titty sorceresses, you are pedophile" schreier
lol
lmao, even
Oh hey, I remember this guy.
What a good journalism he did there
he's right
>fat fucking tiddies and nice ass
>a child
how retarded?
Not retarded, just gnomish
(ex) Kotaku staff are all duplicitous, neurotic and egotistical cunts.
Schreier went on a defense force against a rape victim to cover up his colleagues (particularly D’Anastasio) abusing them.
http://www.nathalielawhead.com/candybox/abusing-you-was-by-the-book-documenting-two-years-of-abuse-from-game-journalism-after-sharing-my-metoo-the-whole-painful-story-all-in-one-place
>post-GamerGate world
>the garden gnome cries out in pain as he strikes you
>wide spread diddling at Blizzard
>Schreier knew for months but kept his mouth shut either to use as blackmail or until he could personally profit off it
>someone else breaks the story before him
>gets bootyblasted and claims he knew first and therefore deserves the lion's share of the clout
>everybody calls him out for being a duplicitous little self-absorbed shit
Bald rat
He was that Kotaku guy who had a blog dedicated to his extremely low IQ takes, right?
This should unironically be more common. People will bitch about capitalism and how corporations will always fuck you over but then when consumers try to take matters into their own hands they bitch too
Still a far cry from when people used to come at them with actual pitchforks
Soon
>with actual pitchforks
The french got a little more silly than that when the rich pissed them off.
There's nothing silly about the guillotine compared to what the royalty used to do people before it was invented.
The French Revolution did nothing wrong.
They led to Napoleon gaining power so I guess you’re right
I thought the peasants retards were used by rich people to get rid of other rich people?
It was basically the middle class giving the upper class the not feel good. The peasants were just happy to be there.
Mahjong!
>indie devs
They are already blaming "Gamers", so the poor innocent game dev is completely off the hook.
Of course no actual threats happened, and this is just a easy excuse for John Riccitello to get out of doing the town hall.
He ruined the lives of thousands of Indie devs. he should be living in fear.
there's godot
strider3d
raylib
time to learn some real dev skills beyond dragging and dropping unity assets
>games already released
>games that part way in development
the fees are backwards tracked
This is the most deranged and nonsensical part. If it ONLY affected games released past date where it starts, it would still be extremely scummy and shitty, but devs would be able to just put out the games they're currently working on before that date and switch to a different engine.
If they go through with this and DON'T retract it being retroactive, you can expect to see many Unity games disappearing from stores.
Yeah that's poor consolation for people in the middle of making a unity game
only because almost all of them are not real game developers, they only know how to use Unity, only know how to THINK in Unity. anyone who's a remotely competent programmer can easily migrate to something else—it's only the drooling retards who think that throwing shit at a wall until it sticks then throwing it up on Steam constitutes "game development" who are fucked—as they should be.
so basically if you don't know how to program but want to create a game you can't and should not use tools that are there for you to make games without learning how to code
sounds retarded
Where's your game?
this bro gon be REAL mad when he learns that "game engine" and "dev environment" aren't unity exclusive concepts
I hate that Unity has redefined what "game engine" means to most people. they think it means "thing that lets you make a game with a fancy visual dev environment that lets you piece together your game logic using high-level abstractions", such that when they jump ship from Unity, they look around for Godot et al. instead of realizing maybe it's time to make something "from scratch" (where "from scratch" means, using SDL or something, not even necessarily doing the super low-level yourself) and learn how to actually harness a fraction of the power of the computer you're using instead of letting it all go to waste because you refuse to learn anything lower-level than "what if I made some Entities and put some Components on them and then made Prefabs of these Entities so I can spawn them over and over again? woohoo, look at me mom, I'm a real game developer!"
garbage collection is insanely overkill for video games. just use a per-frame temporary bump/arena allocator for all the random crap you need allocated each frame, and put ten seconds of thought into what kinda memory you need to allocate where and when for the rest (on game load, on level load, etc.). it really couldn't be easier, but everyone just wants to pretend like "manual memory management" is this impossible-to-learn super obscure thing, when it's really not. it's incredibly simple.
Have you made a game engine? How long did it take?
yes, several, all small and suited for the task of making the game or experiment I was trying to make. all you need is a game loop with a frame limiter (easy), some way of loading/unloading assets if your game uses them (easy), and then a means of taking input (easy) and drawing to the screen (easy). then, like I keep saying, you want a temporary per-frame bump allocator so you don't need garbage collection (easy).
maybe you want a particle system, or some kind of level/scene transition system. slightly more involved, but still dead simple. maybe you want a simple entity system—slightly more involved, but still, really, easy.
the "engine" is not difficult to make at all. the hard part comes from figuring out what kind of game you make, and how to structure your logic to make it work, and work well, but the latter naturally arises from the former.
when I was in school like a decade ago, Unity was all the rage, so the game engines I worked on back then were trying to emulate Unity's entity-component system dogma, and the end result was a codebase that was so overly complicated for such a simple game that it was beyond retarded. just write the code you need, don't obsess over generic abstractions for everything. if you have to make a new component type and then make a new entity and attach said component to said entity just to add a bit of logic to your game, your engine is retarded, and you should feel bad, because you're wasting so much time and energy on something that should be dead fucking simple.
>maybe you want a
rigged animation system with IK
you have two options: 1.) learn how those things work and implement them yourself, or 2.) find some code someone else has written and made freely available to use, and use it. or, you can always 3.) find someone who actually knows how to program to do it for you.
regardless, it shouldn't take you longer than a weekend, once you know what you're doing. there is so much knowledge available at your fingertips yet you want to cry like a baby because the work isn't done and ready to go for you, such that all you have to do is plop your assets in and have everything work automatically? and you call yourself a game developer?!
So what if I want a 3rd person shooter similar to RE4? It would take a few months (for me, anyways) to make a simple 2D game. But a 3D game made in the fashion I want… well I dont really like the idea of trying to tackle that
getting basic 3D untextured cubes rendered is pretty easy.
adding a third-person camera is pretty easy. adding 3D "physics" for character movement (i.e., not real physics) is pretty easy.
getting 3D meshes rendering is pretty easy.
getting rigged, animated 3D meshes rendering isn't the easiest thing but as I said above you can do it yourself or find someone else's code that already does it.
the hard part is getting your level-rendering to work efficiently. but, making a simple RE4 clone where you're in a box of a room, controlling a box, shooting at other boxes, with a RE4-style camera, is really, really not that difficult. especially with something like SDL or raylib.
years and years ago I wanted to make a Persona 3–4 clone, insofar as overworld movement and JRPG/VN dialogue system. it was easy. I'm not an artist at all, but I had differently-colored boxes for characters, which even had a smaller box for a head, and NPC heads rotate to look at you when you get close (within a reasonable angle), like in Persona. I'd never done anything in 3D before—took me like a weekend. super straightforward.
you can do it anon, I believe in you.
its for all games with unity, games that have been released already some for several years.
its one thing if its for every new game or a game midway through development you cut your losses and make/find a new engine, However its retroactively applying to games already released meaning you are going to be forced to pay for this retroactive bullshit or turn your hard work into abandonware and pull it from whatever store its on.
if it were me I'd pull it off stores and then make a public message to encourage the fans to pirate the game in protest.
He's faking the death threats to distract from the fact that he's just about to sink the company. He's already sold his stock and closed two offices.
Stop threatening and start doing it retards
Coomers denied their shitty h games.
Karryn's Prison was made in RPGMaker.
Summer and Winter Memories also made in RPGMaker.
Coomers haven't lost anything aside from their future children.
lol lmao
How do you think this company feels about transitioning to unity
>transitioning to unity
The RPG Maker Unite release failed and they went straight back to updating RPG Maker MZ lol.
>failed
>past tense
Holy shit it actually was released, i didn't even know it did
One look at those ugly sprites and i knew it wasnt going to liftoff
>Karryn's Prison
Literally the pinnacle of H-games. I'm still amazed that only two guys made it.
coder and artist combo i assume?
yep,
Going to need a source
The game is Karryn's Prison. Devs share it for free on Patreon but you can buy it on Steam.
The pic is just a modded outfit i made for the protagonist
I meant the link to the mod
yeah haha, i'm still in the process of making it, i'll post it on the official Remtairy discord in a week probably.
Lmao the source is you gotcha I’ll wait for your mod
Rpgmaker and renpy are the coomer game engines
Being an antisemite makes you more popular with gamers, not less
>financially wreck a shitload of people
>boohoo poor me, these evil goyim!
The threats are fake too.
Oh damn, there was a death threat. Now all criticism is invalid and the CEO will soon be canonized as a saint.
Good.
Someone sent a decapitated pigs head to his office or spray paint the building.
Make these bastards scared
Slash their tires.
They will never stop otherwise
It's always the same shit.
These people like to hide behind the "muh death threat" -lie.
tick tock unityfags
wtf i love unity now
are now making death threats against Unity employees
Every time someone uses that excuse there's never any evidence of death threats.
they count the navy seal copypasta as a "death threat"
lol
All their messages regarding most controversial parts of the new pricing has amounted to "trust me bro" as is.
It's the perfect storm for anyone to actually lobby death threats towards them because why should anyone believe them
And also, every time you demand evidence and someone actually tries to provide it, it's usually something like
>why don't you jump in a fire and have a nice day, gay?
Because apparently asking someone to do it for you is a threat to do it yourself.
And those same people will then go on to get ACTUAL death threats which will be claimed to not represent the entire group. Even though you can put together literally hundreds of examples and they had to play make believe to find still not evidence.
The last time I remember a journo producing "proof" she was getting death threats for being a brave strong wymyn it was quickly revealed through her own shitty track covering that she sent the death threats to herself to invent a story and gain sympathy.
"I am going to come to your house and kill you" is a death threat, and yes, I genuinely believe they received nothing resembling that.
>death threats are only death threats if they are scribbled out with pen and paper and/or if they are followed up on with actual targeted violence
I DON'T believe it.
Saying have a nice day is not a proper death threat. Its just a bitch bitch insult.
I replied to that anon because he said
>I genuinely believe they received nothing resembling that.
Use the slightest bit of critical thinking.
>i don't think they actually got death threats, just "have a nice day"
>"REEEE NO YOU WANT HARM OR HANDWRITTEN NOTES"
use the slightest bit of reality
Unless I see unity employees get assaulted or nearly assassinated in public. Or a real letter saying they will kill them over the unity fees and that they should watch their backs I refuse to believe it
Good. Death threats are quite literally the only thing that get shit done nowadays along with naming and shaming retarded cunts.
This
Next week will be telling us how one of their directors is trans.
i believe two things are true
1.) people do make death threats out of anger which is stupid and does nothing
2.) companies use this to their advantage to gain sympathy and to try and paint all of the backlash as unreasonable
So what youre saying is. If trolls send unity an endless amount of death threats, indie devs will be forced to choke down a shotgun blast? Thst sounds like a good plan anon. Devs should pay .60 per launch.
>indie devs
You blame straight white males in cases like this.
straight white males cant make games
The CEO and all the executives dying is the only way Unity will survive
>against Unity employees
why not against the (ex) stockholders?
>"we are the victims!"
l m a o
>nobody threatened hitler guys!
>arent I so twee!?
Is anyone surprised? Some studios will probably face bankruptcy if this scheme goes through. Imagine your lifework getting ruined because you put your trust in some greedy cunt. Whatever next it's not that weird that some would want to enforce some retribution here before moving on.
>company does something greedy and stupid
>wildly unpopular, outrage ensues
>company uses media to claim death threats are happening to get all the good little soi slaves to defend the company
its funny they're pulling that card this time because I think they fucked up so royally that they don't even have any goyim who will come to defend them
you'll still have the occasional diehard retard but yeah, it's only their marketing team defending this shit
Cries as he strikes you, etc etc
bol alway ride :DDD
oh wow death threats? that's totally real and terrible...
How antisemitic!
>Receive death threat from random stranger
>Actually panic because you live in the USA
You Americans like your guns a bit too much
You like the taste of nannystate boot a bit too much, britbong. This a kink thing with you guys?
Unity deserves to go bankrupt after this stunt, fucking greedy assholes.
Do NOT post Nanachi on this shitty board
Nanachi game is also made in unity, so it's ok that it's here
Actually, nanachi's game is made in UE4. You mod the game by installing unreal engine pak files on it.
You're right, I just looked, only the style made me think it was a game made in Unity
Good, get fucked.
I hope that will serve as a good lesson for them all, that as an individual you should NEVER invest your time and effort into software that's not FOSS
based indie dev chads
still remember the time they bullied that one furry dev to suicide
don't fuck around with the indie cartel
these same devs called gamergate terrorists for doing less.
Don't care. Still backing the devs.
What a joke
Why wasn't this garden gnome ran out of town when he claimed to have known Blizzard was a """toxic""" place for literal 10+ years but just chose not to report on it, framed against his career long claim that he reports to protect the workers in the industry?
Something something you lost gamergate chud
>The unity corpos cry out in pain as they strike you
Threatening CEOs with death or grievous harm is commendable behaviour and should be performed on a daily basis.
Our society sorely lacks a proper sword of Damocles.
This honestly.
Shouldn't these dipshits be celebrating this? Eat the rich, Death to Billionaires, and all that usual nonsense.
Schreier is on their payroll lmao, he's no anticapitalist
Good.
can i get a QRD?
Yes, just google it.
i don't trust tech companies for my information, only anonymous fat virgin schizos online
But those fat virgin schizos are just parroting what the tech companies are saying.
>John "too gnomish for EA" Riccitello becomes CEO of Unity
>Wants to charge 20c per install of every Unity game
>Wording is abstract, literal "trust me, bro" wording, pirated copies may count, installing and reinstalling may lead to extra charges, this last part can be automated through a script to prank developers
>Applies retroactively to every existing Unity game starting January 1st (probably illegal)
merchants got a little too happy, now people don't want to do business with unity. "in case of emergency break glass" protocol has been initiated, next news cycle and possibly next gamergate ensues. i doubt the last part will happen but it would be so funny if it did
they tried to turn paid mods into a "omg those fuckin entitled gamers don't want to support the heckin modderinos" so you can bet your ass they'll try it here
>Unity is going to start charging money from developers who use it
>also going to retroactively charge money from developers who have used it in the past
>the only legal basis for this is a clause in the EULA that says they might change the EULA in the future
>the way they intend to enforce this is some unknown black box technology that supposedly lets them count every time a game is installed, even if it's a pirate copy
Dude it's a trivial common tactic, make yourself look like a victim when you're the one doing something wrong
But I thought game developers liked microtransactions?
Why the FUCK are you not a pirate?
>Unity employees
You mean death threats to a Unity parasite.
Fuck John Tortelinni
>John Tortelinni
>John Tortelinni
bro it's a ten year old meme
>bro it's a ten year old meme
don't care still funny
Wait what?
It's a common joke about this fag's name we've been making since he was in the news for his rampant garden gnomery in the early 2010s
More corporations deserve death threats when they get too gnomish. They own the court systems so vigilanty justice is the only way to keep them honest
Shame on indie devs. This means that Unity should start increasing their fees in order to pay for mental health care for their affected employees.
It’s honestly weird that Tim Sweeney hadn’t said ANYTHING about it. Is he friends with Johnny Unity?
No, he's waiting to see if they get away with it or not because I'm sure he would like to do that, too.
Never interrupt an enemy making a mistake.
>cries out in pain as he robs you
Many eyebrows were raised on that fateful day.
so, if i want to make a simple 3d game i need to write my own physics, shader rendering, etc?
Make a 2D game instead. Or learn unreal
Devs are going to attempt to flock to Godot in droves. If there aren't many tutorials or documents to do what you want there then there will be soon
yes, or, use any of the myriad solutions out there. either way, learn what goes into actually making a game, instead of using a garbage-collected language to write bad glue code for a shitty entity/component system to cobble basic functionality together while having the gall to call yourself a "game developer"
>yes, or, use any of the myriad solutions out there
Like what? Game engines?
sorry for stupid question but, what should i learn for this? c++, vulkan, openGL?
make a 2D basic game in C using SDL or something, there's a billion tutorials and examples out there. don't worry about entities and components and whatnot, just store stuff in arrays, or data structures that are light abstractions on top of arrays. use a bump/arena "temporary storage" allocator that resets each frame instead of garbage collection. all of this is dead fucking simple but nobody teaches it anymore because they want you locked into bullshit like Unity.
making simple games is not difficult. you can do a lot with very little. you just have to give up the fancy visual editor and high-level abstractions you learned, and start thinking about what the computer is actually doing, which used to be a GIVEN for game development, before it became this hipster fashionable "inclusive" thing that "anyone can do".
yeah pretty much. just learn to code you retard it's not difficult.
you sound like a linux chud
nope, Windows Chad til the day I die, as is anyone who is remotely serious about game development. Linux gaming is a meme, Proton or not.
You're retarded, majority of old school PC games are programmed on windows.
>making simple games is not difficult
it takes a lot of time just to code the basics right, if you want anything more complex, good luck coding that without experience
game engine figures that out for you
thanks b, always wanted to make a game without any engine or third-party programms.
best of luck friend, if you keep things simple and don't go overboard trying to overgeneralize or overabstract everything you'll have a great time making a simple game and building upon it.
it really isn't. how do you think games were made for decades before Unity came about? you don't have to go full "I'll do the OpenGL/Vulkan shit myself" route, just use something like SDL. it really is not nearly as hard as you think it is.
>The Witness
>Unity
lol, lmao even
i hope morons like you die of covid.
coding is impossible for most people, only those born geniuses can do that. middlewares like unity and unreal exist because that retarded line of thinking of yours is retarded.
The merged with a malware-creating Israeli ad company.
HOLD UP
The CEO is the guy that wanted 1 dollar every reload in battlefield 3???
Yup he's the same guy that was spitballing that idea to the table. It was fortunately shut down.
>check fuckboi's twitter to see if it's real

>incognito
>doesn't show a single tweet from 2023
musk really killed twitter
And that's a good thing
It took less than 2 days for the media to turn this into
>please think of the poor poor ex-EA Games CEO
>Unity will bankrupt indies, fuck off all their partners and devestate the market all because of a CEO who was manipulating the stock
>Schreier: sleep
>Unity gets death threats from the studio's that would become bankrupt and destroyed from their new policy
>Schreier: THIS JUST IN !!!
Every second there's a CEO doing something fucking evil or retarded
4chan was right
100% deserved.
>le death treats XD
when has this ever been followed through? People have threatened to kill me online for 20 years
It's just a cheap emotional manipulation tactic to distract from their scummy practices. Anyone expressing any strong/polarizing opinion on the internet will receive death threats, this is nothing new.
Kyoani
>death threats
So tired of this meme.
singular. one. and they likely did it themselves. but yes, they cry this everytime there is legit criticism like they're following a script.
I feel like the pool who are going to do this is rather limited.
Consdering the consumers of this are devlopers and not the people who buy games,
oy vey stop noticing guys, we didn't do any insider trading, it's like another shoa
They've doing this monthly, it's nothing new.
>shows that this is completely normal selling
The game is rigged anon these fucks come on board (either by giving cash or jerking someone off) and sell every few months until they run out of shares.
At some point people will start lynching gnomish collaborators. Not that I condone any illegal activity, I'm just predicting it.
i blame genshin impact for this.
unity garden gnomes must have been shaking as they watched the chinese make literally billions every year and wondered how they could get even a slice of the profits
I don't believe there were any death threats.
>source: unity
Yeah I totally trust these dishonest dipshits, their word is gospel and they certainly have no incentive to lie about this
Some people assume John did this on purpose to tank Unity's stock since he just sold his, so that he can buy the dip and make even more when the stock goes back up
Which I mean, the theory holds up except for the small caveat that comparies are legally obligated to act in the interest of stockholders. If you act to intentionally short stock, they can sue you out of existence. It's way too big of a risk, if the company doesn't bounce back they'll be out for your blood. I think it was the opposite, John honestly believed devs would just sit there and take it because what are they gonna do, go to unity and pay their licensing fees?
>go to unity
Go to unreal, I meant
he will buy back his shares while backpedaling on his decision later while going to companies begging to buy his company, he is double dipping
>except for the small caveat that comparies are legally obligated to act in the interest of stockholders.
garden gnomes are above the law. He will get away with it.
Nobody screws over garden gnomes more than other garden gnomes, you just need a lawyer who will take up the lawsuit.
>comparies are legally obligated to act in the interest of stockholders
this isn't true no matter how much the internet repeats it. there is no legal obligation
there is a defacto obligation in almost all public companies because otherwise the board will likely remove those who don't act in the shareholders' interests (because then the shareholders will likely replace the board, and the board is usually also made up of shareholders), but it is most definitely not a legal requirement
All of this implies the rich follow the same rules as you and I, which is quite a funny assertion friend.
Holy based
>BOGGED.com
>whitebois
What clued me in was the lack of movement in “it’s” face
Let me guess, he defends unity's decision?
why are goys so anti-semetic, just pay your fees
this is called consumer engineering and it happens in most markets and it's one of big reasons why everything becomes more and more shit
planned obsolescence is a direct result of this bullshit
>the CEO claimed that paying per bullet was great for the future of gaming
Surprised that the military hasn't considered such a payment plan for their forces. This is some top level merchant behavior.
>Surprised that the military hasn't considered such a payment plan for their forces.
Because the military contracts out to the lowest bidder, it's the exact opposite of how they operate.
These "people" should be lynched
Name a couple of good unity games that came out in the last 5 years.
ori and the blind forest
hollow knight
rim world
What was the "5 years" part you didn't understood?
do I look like I care
Then don't answer retard.
>the playstation 3 is still pretty new, right?
Celeste
Ori and the Will of Wisps
Hades

Valheim
It Takes Two
Kena: Bridge if Spirits
Death's Door
Litle Nightmares 2

>Noita
bro less than half of those are in unity what the fuck are you smoking?
Noita isn't even unity you dummy. they use their own engine. same goes for resident evil, capcom does their own engine
Surprised you didn't add Super Mario 64 or Sonic Adventure 2 with all the other bullshit you pulled straight out your ass
The Witness
Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy
what this guy said to
But let's be real, these games are good in spite of Unity. All of them are terribly optimized.
The Witness isn't a Unity game, but you'd be forgiven for thinking it is despite the fact that the developer is a hardline "write it from scratch" pundit.
Isonzo and Verdun were made in Unity. They will be sweating bullets at this news.

VRChat is going to have to start charging or play ads.
they already have a subscription like discord nitro. they'll just axe the free version
They gave out dungeon of the endless for free on steam a few months ago. Imagine how much money that will cost them in future reinstalls.
they should all run Unity to court for bait and switch fraud

>Be me
>Spent time learning to use Unity and making development progress in the engine
>Unity pulls this shit
Cant imagine how it feels for devs who have been using Unity for years of progress just for this to happen
it's almost like you and they weren't learning almost any transferrable skills at all and instead everything you think you know about game development is just learning the specific set of high-level abstractions that only make sense in the context of using a closed-source product that can (and did lol) fuck you over whenever they felt like it.
time to buckle up and learn you some real game development like a man. or, bitch out and stop pretending to have ever been a game developer. which path will you choose?
Too bad you need to use these commercial lock-in tools in pretty much any relevant dev job, unless you take the indie pill and hopefully won't bleed all your money looking for that next unicorn of a game.
>commercial lock-in tools
Like what?
C++?
Fucking Blender?
Pretty much all big and stable dev jobs use either Unity, Epic, or some in-house engine with their specific abstractions. You won't find a job writing video games with just C++, mate. No matter how much you or I wish we could.
>You won't find a job writing video games with just C++, mate
It's always funny watching retards like you pretend to be experts in something they obviously know very little about
Funny, I was thinking the same thing. You have absolutely no clue at all.
Lol, okay. I typed "game developer openings" into google and this was the very first thing that popped up. Pretty much every game engine, including Unity and Unreal, is written in C++ and any serious programming job will require understanding it. And even if a programming job doesn't directly use C++, you are much more likely to be hired if you have experience in it because it shows you're a real programmer
>you need C++
>lists a job for a popular game engine
kek.
Not every job requires C++. You can also get by with just simple C# knowledge if you are looking to escape the vg industry for something better.
pointers aren't scary anon nut the fuck up and stop relying on garbage collection when a temporary per-frame bump allocator does the same thing for a fraction of the overhead and with no microstuttering GC pauses. video games run on computers, computers have memory—it's your job to manage that memory.
Nobody is arguing that learning C++ is useless or not mandatory for most dev jobs. You are so invested in winning this argument that you don't even remember what it's about.
>dev jobs
Game dev jobs*
Dev jobs too. I mean if you make any decent piece of software it's either going to be in C++ or Python.
the in house engines are often written in C++. All the ones I've used have been.
:DDDD
Obvious deflection is obvious. Enjoy your (You)
>not a real game developer
99 percent of people are not real game devs by your logic.
yes. absolutely. 99.999% of people are not real game developers. 95% of "game developers" are not real game developers, just babies making a mess of components and spaghetti C# code. 95% of them don't even know the difference between a struct and a class in C#.
Game dev jobs have been specialized since the 90s. Its not the Atari days when the programmer did the art and music too.
there's nothing "specialized" about pretending that garbage collection is a good idea, or pretending that programmers don't need to know how fucking computers fucking work in order to fucking program them. this sort of thinking is destroying the industry by making retards think they can just slap some shit together and call it "making a game" and "being a game developer", when it's not.
even if you think everything else I'm saying is hyperbole (it's not): there is absolutely zero excuse to be a Unity C# programmer and not know the difference between a struct and a class, and when to use one over the other. bare fucking minimum.
I've played plenty of Unity games that didn't have bugs in them. I had zero bugs or crashes with Blasphemous 2 recently. Yeah they could probably run a little better if you micro manage the memory but Unity games are often smaller in scope anyways and the garbage collector does a decent enough job.
Shut up, gay. If the guy made a game, he's a game developer, no matter what you think.
But I agree that these other gays should at least evaluate their options before they go installing Unity.
It's not as if only geniuses can make things from scratch. There are several games that seem to me to be made by normal people (not geniuses) that don't use any engine, like that retro FPS that was released recently, or Andrew's Crystal Project.
anon please tell me you don't consider "people" who "make" "games" with Twine to be game developers as well, because that's the logic you're using here, and it's retarded.
if you're using a garbage-collected language, you're not a real game developer, you're a baby who's scared of pointers—sorry, but I don't make the rules, computer hardware designers do.
The term "game developer" already has its meaning embedded in it. You're a gay because you want your personal opinion to change the meaning of those words. A game developer, for you, is not the guy who "develops games", but the guy who crosses some kind of arbitrary line of programming proficiency.
I have no patience with this kind of thinking, it seems like a woman's thing to me and I'm fed up with pretending to take women's opinions seriously.
wrong, it's you who is thinking like a woman, because you're using baby Fisher-Price toy tools to make games and you're getting upset like the little girl you are when someone tells you that your plastic hammer isn't a real hammer.
As a litmus test, if you don't know what this statement is
∀P((0∈P∧∀i(i∈P-->i+1∈P))-->∀n(n∈P))
you aren't ready to take the reins of a computer.
Sources say the threats were very real and serious. Johnny Ricotta had to fly to Bahamas on a heli.
I'm going to kill you anon. You better flee your country. I'm fast approaching as you read this.
:O
I'm messaging Jason right now.
Already told Jason I'm going to kill him. He's laying low in Argentina at the moment.
>2023
>still milking "internet death threat" like they mean anything
Fucking pathetic.
become ungovernable
>make a business decision so barbarically bad that you risk the lives of your employees
amazing
>Death threats in 2023
Literally the most generic excuse someone can make. Ill believe it when they wake up dead
Sounds like a bullshit excuse to avoid addressing the issue and paint themselves as victims
>Sounds like a bullshit excuse to avoid addressing the issue and paint themselves as victims
correct.
I am not gonna care until these board of directors start getting beheaded
at which point I will start cheering
Just use any other engines or better, code without engine.

>make a ton of shovelware garbage copypasting mechanics from his wrestling trash to his pseudo-rpg trash and vice versa
>hasn't improved anything in decades
>AI alone ins incompetent
>wonders why everyone pirates his shit
lmao
>credible
what bullshit. i hate when journos are stroking up themselves like this
its just another long noser running damage control for his fellow tribesmen
>psyop'd into defending microtransactions because le devs bad
You can hate furry game that's actually an allegory for depression #4324284 all you like, but plenty of well known devs and games use unity, and their recent change is simply retarded. If they merely charged for games bought (lets say, take 5-10%) no one would have given a shit. It's the weird install thing people care about.
>John Rigatonni
Now it all makes sense
Well, in all fairness, somebody really should murder that guy to make an example of him.
>price hike
Is that how we're downplaying it now?
You think jason schreier would turn on his own people?
>forced bankruptcy
seems more fitting
I'd say right wingers have more people who are willing to go all the way but left has considerably more amount of crazies who pull of stunts and waste their lives in pursuit of these shit
extreme right wingers try to solo 5 ATF agents in the woods and die kek
>I'd say right wingers have more people who are willing to go all the way
You're not wrong but rightoids tend to be fringe schizos acting alone while leftoids hide behind black bloc and act as a riotous group
>muh right wing boogeyman
What cries out in pain as it strikes you?
women
A mirror
>gamedevs: gamers are toxic and entitled
>Unity: gamedevs are toxic and entitled
>First they came for the gamers, but I said nothing.
millionaires should receive more death threats tobeh'onest, they should have to live in constant fear just like everyone else.
big yikes sounds like a bunch of entitled chud game developers decided to go way too far
That guy's head should be rolling across the floor.
only 0.20$ per install? greedy gamedevs got off easy...
>install, 20c
>uninstall
>install 20c again
>repeat how many times you want
>dev has to pay unity more than what you paid for the game initially
Valve takes portion of the purchase, not a fucking install.
>Jason "Video Game Awards kid is alright because he's gnomish" Schreier
the kid was indeed hilarious, but this reasoning is sickening
No fucking way. You're making this up; he can not have possibly said that.
you must not be well versed on the ways of the schreier
>death threats
anybody who uses this internet gets death threats, probably not credible
>"wake of a price hike"
Fucking kys, Schreier.
The only reason to listen to this gay journo is cuz he does have real connections. Too bad he's such an ass human being that I can barely trust his gay words.
Indie devs deserve to be erased from the industry
i'm not a gamedev but indie devs are the only innovative people left in the game industry.
lol
He's right you know.
Yeah 99.99% of indie games are just rehashes and slop, but that still an exponentially better rate than the AAA industry.
>X simulator [current year]
>2D pixel art shit
>survival/management game #274739
Trully innovative.
So true sis, more bloated AAA slop, GaaS slop, and gachaslop please!!!
>nooooo my RNG deckbuilders, walking simulators, depression allegories and peaceful casual "comfy" slop!
Indie trash is just as shit as AAA
Name five games like that
That would require me to remember the name of indie garbage
I accept your concession then
They should have closed their office in minecraft.
No but it's a quick and cheap way to lump legitimate criticism in with extremist individuals for retarded normies with zero attention span
Surely even normalfags know these "death threats" are just a meme by now.
NPCs have the attention span of, well, NPCs. What do you think? Their emotions get toyed like they're marionettes. Look at this thread, you can see who are the NPCs when they don't even know the CEO of Unity tried to pull off similar stunts while in EA.
I just laughed at this because it happened to me on space engineers (with more explosions).
>my soul leaving my body
happened to me once but it was an entire duplicate ship
I wish someone would step up and make a death promise towards this guy. And a long list of other people that you couldn’t pay me to post online.
>Death threats
This has never happened. At least for video games
Nintendo deploying the ninjas
You might say it's another Shoah even
>Credible death threats
How the fuck do they know it's credible? Some fuck online mailed him his home coordinates?
>Bootlicking
>enginefags finally getting the chance to act smug
post your game moron
>against Unity employees
nowhere it said that it was against the employees you massive cocksucking retard
i won't believe anything is an actual "death threat" unless it's either attached to a dox or they sent a pig head to their house.
>Credible
Lmao the only thing schreier’s credible at is farming (you)s on Ganker.
The only people powerful enough to go through with a death threat are getting ready to sue Unity’s ass so hard it might as well be a death threat.
>there have been no death threats against anyone at Unity, they're lying to try and garner sympathy
HOWEVER
>there should have been death threats against Unity, and if someone killed their CEO it would be a net positive for the world
You get what you fucking deserve.
I hope that someday I get to see a cartel video featuring John Ricatiello
Not because of Unity but because he murdered Pandemic when he was the EA CEO
Don't forget about how he fucked over the Artifact fanbase.
I think a list of every fanbase John Ricatiello fucked over would require enough posts to fill every thread on the catalog
"guys a fucking asshole."
Why is he such a slimy garden gnome? He also covered Druckmann's ass with TLOU2 leak.
>Why does a garden gnome lie?
I dunno, why does a fish swim? Why does a man breathe? Because it's in their nature to do so.
GAME DEVS AND GAMERS ARE GONAN KILL ALL THE garden gnomeS reputable sources have told me
i cannot confirm if it's true BUT HOLOCAUST 6 MILION!!!!!
Wow, this guy gets paid to be an unrepentant lying piece of shit.
Unity China will not be adhering to these changes. They have nothing to fear from CCP/Tencent assassins.
>a credible death threat
Okay now show it. If it's so credible you shouldn't have a reason to hide it.
Why haven't we built an open source 3d game engine yet so all these nerds can fuck right off?
>waiting for an open source 3d game engine
Well, why haven't you?
Because I don't know enough about 3D graphics.
Why aren't you learning?
I do web and mobile and only make things that make money, the rest of my time is spent with my family and developing the land I bought for food production.
That's why nobody else is building an open source 3d game engine either.
good point
>family and developing the land
You could spend that time on more valuable things, like building a 3d engine for example
Yeah, and you could use that 3d game engine as a down payment on a resume.
Eat the rich.
>do something evil that causes people to send you death threats
>receive death threats
>act surprised and upset that this happened
maybe be less evil and you wouldn't get death threats maybe?
The "moron moron moron" gambit.
Pissbabies whining when they cant leech off other people's work (unity) for free no more. Lmao pathetic.
>pissbabies
Way to out yourself as transgender. You may now exit the thread and continue tying your noose
He has a big truck.
dont care baby dickingvgarden gnome fagget pedo
we will in fact send him horse heads enmasse if he wants us to pay taxes.
RPGMakerbros
how can I master your engine? I need to learn the coding part of it to custom my game
Whenever some company claims they're getting death threats they're just fishing for sympathy.
You are all contrarians who don’t believe in anything.
Maybe try citing your sources instead of guzzling cum next time Schreier
They'll always claim they got death threats but never tell you the reason why.
shoo shoo
this right here is all you need to know about the kind of garden gnome schreier is
a well formulated argument turned into "waaa stop attacking me" and the following rebuttal completely ignored
Either he said that, or he assumed that he has the mentality of a child and isn't fit to talk to adults, something he obviously can't do.
In any case, these types of people only have a chance in environments where they find no opposition.
>We just ruined the lives of a lot of people, for no reason, and now they're mad at us. How could this be?
The funniest part of all this will be when all these small time devs waste their time moving to other proprietary engines and realize they will be paying more than they would by sticking with unity
This might seem like a retarded question, but how will Unity track this data? If I’m using an older version of Unity to make a game and sell it, how will they know when its installed and whatnot?
Their official answer is literally "trust me bro"
in the end it will turn out they just look at steam game stats. data model my ass
Yeah, I don't think they actually have a proprietary data model.
Imagine the internal state of the company right now.
>PR wasn't consulted, scrambling madly to calm the lynch mobs down
>programmers weren't consulted, becoming increasingly desperate in their attempts to explain to the executives that their plan isn't technologically possible
>legal department wasn't consulted, quietly updating their resumes
Those death threats may very well be coming from inside the house.
Perhaps from shareholders, or employees who were given stock options.
>make a death threat against CoD devs for changing the meta
>crickets
>make a credible death threat against Unity sutis for fucking everything up
>crickets
>make an obviously fake death threat to rabid feminist who's trying to destroy gaming
>full spectrum media attention, FBI investigation, she gets invite to the UN
>Jason Schreier
Today I'll remind them.
What's with that garden gnome's profile pic? Does he think staring blankly into the camera and black and white filter looks good?
If this shit was always free this would be a different story, but these mother fuckers are still charging no less than $2000 per seat in professional licenses.
How do you cancel a whole town hall? Where will the local government board go now?
>Release game for free
>Game cant be played unless the player buys a file from you thats the same price as what you were originally going to charge for the game.
>Game doesn’t make any revenue, therefor bypassing the $200,000 requirement.
Checkmate, Unity
What is the developer and "organization who sells the license" were separate?
i am curious if you can bypass the revenue detection shit by making your game fully f2p and only taking donations on patreon or something
that's the business model i'm thinking of going for, if at all applicable
Then we'll see who's actually harming others.
i wouldn't be doing it as a business. just a side project motivated by hubris (using any proceeds to improve the game, if any)
Waiting for people creating wrappers and dll injectors to disable the spying.
Unity thing is awful by par to course for any major corporation and I dont understand why people act shocked when greedy company still act greedy at the end of the day.
what the fuck is wrong with people thinking corporations are on their side?
retroactively demanding money for a previously free service is not "par to course"
Good maybe Godot will finally get better resources and documentation.
Tech employees are the softest motherfuckers in existence, if you're not getting a credible death threat in person at least once a week are you even really in danger? Get real
ok garden gnome
any moment now
Rigatoni knows only the same tricks.
