Tried it for a week as a Shadow Knight and couldn't really get into it. Something about WoW just made it feel more engaging. Also I guess you can't solo on certain classes which I imagine is a bit of a turn off?

various classes can solo but some that can are just painfully slow. Enchanter, druid, bard, necromancer, shaman and mage are the less painful options, with necromancer probably being the easiest. SK can solo but is one of those slow ones. This game was just made for grouping right out the gate

Being able to solo is the death knell of a quality MMO. If you want to solo, then go play a single player game.

Actually, funnily enough the CEO for daybreak somehow managed to worm his way into becoming the CEO for the Enad (a swedish company the ruskies sold them too) that bought them. Don't ask me how people keep doing this.
Anyway heres a slide from a recent investor conference that lists a new everquest game starting development soon. The new CEO (Which reminder is day breaks old CEO) Said that everquest is their most important IP. So it's looking pretty good this'll actually happen.

Really, UO and EQ were the kings. Original UO had so much fricking freedom it's unreal. You could fricking spend an entire weekend mining and making armor and weapons, and chopping down trees and making furniture. Then spend the next weekend fishing and going on treasure hunts.

WoW is the casual copy of EQ. If you look back at older editions of D&D you will see EQ is a more direct translation of D&D, you can see this with fire beetles and whatnot. You are doing the quest, questing, nothing but questing, with nothing to save you but your wits alone. You are meant to die, a lot. There were no safety features in those older editions. So it was up to you to survive based on your wits alone. WoW is too easy by comparison. FFXI attempts to copy EQ without resorting to casual gameplay like FFXIV. You are meant to die often. The only thing this sort of game lacks is an immersive roleplaying environment beyond combat. You can wander around each town and admire its presentation until you fall to your death, you can pretend your character is engaging in the rich lore and culture of the land, but there is precious little to do. Of course, a good DM would have more things to do, more activities available beyond traversing dungeons and killing things. Perhaps you would come across a monster and say hail well met, and the monster would reply in its AI generated context sensitive speech. And then all possibilities would be open from that point onward. So, it was not about EQ, it was about going to the IGN MMORPG boards and wondering what potential there could be in regards to immersive interactive online simultaneous roleplaying experience. What would developers do over the next twenty years. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Then the boards shut down. Not a single idea was considered. You are literally paying for XP and equipment, characters, more power. But what is there to do with all that power. What do you do next. So then EQ Landmark would set the stage for a more immersive, interactive experience where you could do literally anything, like minecraft but more mature. And then that was cancelled. There is no hope for you adventurer. There is nothing left to do.

      Anonymous

Funny enough AI is perfect for EQ with the hail and conversing system.
Imagine creating an AI database that auto generates content based on the lore perimeters you set.

SOE practically invented the themepark MMO subgenre and they effectively killed MMOs as a whole by being too stubborn and stupid to balance their classes properly, encouraging multiboxing.

the lack of instances and the actually dynamic faction changes. You can kill guards and gain enough faction to the point monsters outside a nearby dungeon monsters won't attack you. Any race can go to any city with enough grinding (or if you're an enchanter via illusions.)

eq classes are all unbalanced in cool ways that make them each unique experiences (aside from ungeared ranger but it can still get the job done). this is way better than how modern games water down class uniqueness just to make sure there's balance. Besides some exceptionally overpowered classes like bard and enchanter and the underwhelming ranger, I wouldn't say the game is unbalanced. Most classes fill a particular niche, even if not in a raid environment. Which let's be honest isn't something accessible for most guilds in classic EQ anyway.
