He only said that because he was pissed about losing both Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy to Sony.

They only lost DQ for 7 and 8, neither of which are particularly standout. Later, 9 was extremely successful on the DS.

Both broke sales record for the series. 7 was even the highest selling PS1 game in Japan I believe.

Isnt 8 literally the one all DQ fans jerk off to?

Nah that is 3 or 5. The western fanbase clings to 8 because it was the first one with a "big budget" release but I find the 3d battle system (skill point buy) tedious and far too slow.
The 2d games are like slot machines, even down to the sound effects.

DQ8 was the reason 9 was successful in the first place, literally the first DQ game to make a huge break out in the west.
          Stupid moron.

          >9's popularity was due to the west
bro in JP they had massive crowds of people in parks at night streetpass for grottos that the cops had to clear out
only shit that ever went that hard in the west is gen 5/6 pkmn

I mean you're not really a model for a functioning human being since you're a geriatric Jap who spends 18 gorillion hours working to the extent where you have no time to form good relationships with any of your family members, so you don't have any grounds to condemn gamers who like to autistically play one game for months on end.

Yeah it's true, whenever I play a shitty game I just think about how I could have been reading a book with the lights on instead

Yep, this is largely correct ever since my soul, optimism, and large portions of lifetime net worth were stolen by disloyal prostitutes. I'm sorry and a little envious you are dead Yamamuchi-san.

That quote has been massively altered and taken out of context. He wasn't talking about RPG players, but Playstation players. He was responding to a question about why the Playstation beat the Nintendo 64, so he said that Japanese gamers like to hold themselves up in their rooms and play dark, depressing games. People make it about RPGs for some reason, when it actually pushed for several RPG projects at Nintendo. The "depressing games" part was likely aimed specifically at FF7 because it was big hit for Playstation and Nintendo and Square fricking hated each other at the time because Square was caught badmouthing Nintendo to other developers like Enix and Yamauchi basically banned them from Nintendo consoles for several years.
