Black person, the whole point of Kanji's S-Link is that he struggles with what it means to be a man. He grew up without a father, or really any male authority figure, with the only lesson he passed on to his son being "men are strong". He grew up with a single mother, around a traditionally feminine craft, which he naturally grew interested in. His entire character is about the lesson of "men are strong" clashing with his feminine interests, it's about how he overcompensates with his super masculine delinquent persona, and about how he himself mistakes his feminine interests as being gay, or not a real man.
He's never been just gay. He's always been a confused teenager trying to figure himself out between clashing ideals and internalized lessons.

My impression of Kanji is that he thought he needed to be gay because he wasn't the person he was pretending to be.

His feelings toward Naoto were purely incidental to his sexuality, his true sexuality is almost a non-factor in his story by the end of it because he himself says "It ain't a matter of guys or chicks... I'm just scared shitless of being rejected".
Kanji being gay or straight isn't the focus of his story even though on the surface it does.
