No demographic has lower standards than gamers.

Cuz modern gaming is nothing more than an interactive drug. I'd wager most people do not research games they buy to any great extent. Early access, triple A devs, it doesn't matter. An addict always needs another dose. When new games come out in a trash buggy mess they don't care. They're so desperate for the next big hit they'll buy almost anything.

    >try to convince people its going to be a consistent business practice since gaming was a fresh, expanding market and companies are naturally greedy

I'm sure there are earlier examples of the industry going wrong than horse armor. Like Japs releasing a game in chapters on PS2 (.hack comes to mind).

This is fine if each chapter can be considered stand alone in terms of length.

.hack games are very shallow game play wise, it was literally just stretching a dungeon crawler across 3/4 full priced releases for the sake of typical Japanese style greed. It wasn't as successful in the western market but they tested the waters and I think the IP gets shafted to this day due to salty nip corporate suits holding that grudge to this day.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is praised by everyone despite being the one of the first games to ship incomplete and then sell you the ending dlc.

Yeah, I remember at the time I thought this was shitty but I wasn't surprised because I'm sure other companies had done stuff like this too. Can't actually think of any examples though.
Closest I can recall is the predatory bullshit nintendo used to pull off with incremental hardware additions and peripherals. Never understood why people let them get away with it.

Oblivion was already lambasted for numerous issues 17 years ago at this point it was just icing on the cake.

They thought it was dumb, but also said the whole thing was harmless, and didn't mean anything. In the following years several developers directly said they paid attention to how well Horse Armor did (c'mon, it's just a buck or two) and it influenced paid content going forward.

But how would anyone other than bethesda or maybe MS and Sony who own the DLC stores, would know how horse armor performed? The outcry was huge and much larger than whoever defended it, and skyrim didnt even repeat such a small dlc

Do people really think that if Horse Armor hadn't sold well, DLC as a whole wouldn't have taken off eventually anyway?
Because that is naive bordering on moronic.

      >C'mon, do people think if the Auction House and accompanying loot system for Diablo 3 is ill received it will be removed and modified, respectively? Because that is naive bordering on moronic.
      >C'mon, do you really think if enough of a stink about loot boxes is made that crackdowns will start happening and then suddenly they'll vanish like a fart in the wind? Because that is naive bordering on moronic.

Ah yes you got me there, those 2 examples definitely disprove the other literal hundreds of cases in which absolutely nothing happened.
Also loot boxes still exist, no idea why you even bring them up.

Most people alive on this board have no idea what it was like when this released.

I purchased it, thinking the quests would be a lot more than it was and that knights quest or whatever would be good as oblivion was my favorite game at the time with like 300 hours already. I submit I am part of the problem, but at least I still have an awesome poster because of it.

Because the internet was in its teenage years, there were no smartphones, social media was just a blip on people's radar the homosexuals who plague it now wouldn't be caught dead playing vidya we liked or going on forums of imageboards of all things. Frick I would watch the world get bathed in nuclear hellfire just to go back to 2006 and have it stay there.

      >Everyone hated horse armor
No, a very vocal minority hated horse armor and the other little dlcs Oblivion had but they all sold insanely well. Horse Armor and the other little dlcs Oblivion had proved to other developers that the people outraged by it literally don't matter and hordes of people will buy that shit even if its like 3 dollars for a dagger.
