>Philosophy major - have spent hundreds, possibly thousands, of hours reading philosophy

>Get told to "read a book" every time I praise a video game story, probably by some chud who hasn't done even a fraction of the above but just wants their hobby to remain mindless entertainment
When will this meme end? Plenty of humanities experts grew up with video games at this point, it's not a niche hobby for nerds anymore. Many of them go into video game development themselves, if you look into the credits for many games you will see people with formal training in the arts/literature or philosophy.
post your graduation thesis or gtfo
You should be ashamed to even post these sorts of things. Boasting about your academic "success" and how intellectual you are.
This sort of pretentious homosexualry is precisely what ruins RPGs, and games in general, really, turning them into a medium not for those who enjoy playing things, but rather twisting It into unfun barely mediocre storytelling devices.
So what If plenty of experts grew up with video games? What does that change? Do games now have to appease them? Cater to their intelectual preferences?
Should games perhaps make you watch a few cutscenes of an inteoductory philosophy class, so you get all those references to Sartre, Derrida and Simone de Beauvoir.
So smart is your kind that you never managed to notice that games were meant to exercise your mind in a different way than books and movies do.
But well, you deserve It, proudly proclaim your conquest of the medium
Congratulations you freak, you have managed to ruin it all for everyone else, games suck and you own It, too bad you wont even play It, your kind only watches YouTube video essays.
Crawl back to your late-00s dark age
Is this serious? Or some ironic reply to agree with my point? I can barely tell
You heard what I said. Go play your console bleep bloops and pog-out about how heckin' great Metal Gear / Halo / Mass Effect / other consolepig casualized 3D slop with un-loosable action elements was.
Whatever are you talking about, I have to ask, what are your favorite games story gobbler
Pillars of Eternity
Dishonored
Disco Elysium
Fromsoft games but not Elden Ring
Shovel Knight
All have either great story, great level design or great gameplay, at least 2 of these aspects each, some all three. Late 00's arcadey zero challenge (be it mechanical or mental) "we want the mom credit card stealing console audience" slop hardly ever pulls of one of these. Its funny in retrospect that the anti games-journo crowd shilled that shit with the "game is only when you can't loose", despite their games only barely managing to satisfy this criteria.
Storygames and no RPGs. Kings field perhaps being an exception.
Not only are you a story homosexual you are also a fromsoftware-is-the-only-company-that-makes-hard-games-homosexual.
Jesus, try playing other games, and some RPGs as well, as you perhaps mightve missed, discussing the genre is the purpose of this board.
>Pillars of Eternity
Stopped reading there
I dislike this response.
Pillars has it's problems with over-indulgence and the narrative can be self-aggrandising at times, however that's a criticism that can be levelled at PT and DE in equal measure.
As far as subject matter goes, pillars tackles intricate subjects, faith, meaning, belief, righteousness and identity of self and it handles it reasonably confidently considering the medium.
It has a good range of characters that struggle with each of these themes and they are portrayed competently when measured against the competition. They aren't perfect, but they do a good job.
If you're a lore gay the game has plenty of interesting history to learn about and I think Obsidian did a commendable job with world building.
Yes but its made by the bad hipster man
nta
Pillars of Eternity is a good game and a good crpg
console bleep bloops and pog-out about how heckin' great Metal Gear / Halo / Mass Effect / [+ dragon age origins] other consolepig casualized 3D slop are bad games
t. a PhD in physics
>Pillars of Eternity.
Surely you’re joking OP, I was actually taking you seriously.
Cataclysmic post
>have spent hundreds, possibly thousands, of hours reading philosophy
my condolences. games are a higher thing than art. long before there was art, mammals played games. you are merely a product of the descent into cyclical self-consciousness and its alienation with being, a long drawn-out whinge.
this. i at least enjoy reading sci fi and horrors and dont keep my head in my arse
Read a book
Read a book
>Have seen films by Tarantino
stopped reading here, hope reading philosophy will give you money and help get you laid younger women, cheers Tarantino sophisticated supreme gentleman LMAO
Why do you care about what people think about a thing that you do in private?
>passive media gay wants vidya to be passive
many such cases
Lol can you imagine being enough of a cum guzzling homosexual that you skim a bunch of philosophy books solely so that you can tell people on the rpg board on Ganker about it, or anyone for that matter
Your case is a further example of how reading philosophy doesn't make you intelligent. You realize reading a smart person's ideas doesn't give you their brain, right? That intelligence is inherent, and knowledge is learned?
When people tell you to read a book they're telling you to read fiction, you know, stories, which is what you'd be comparing Shitstain Elysium with. The fact that you name dropped 30 film directors and only vaguely referred to your philosophy studies, let alone naming a single great story, evidences the disconnect here.
Disco Elysium IS shit. As a game yes, as a story yes. It's literally, litrully, the 25 hour long onanistic tweet-storm of a pretentious tankie homosexual who's obsessed with American race and gender politics.
And that's all it is. The characters and plot development constantly ring false. Read a fricking book.
speaking about high culture, ever heard the rapper mustard? he made a captivating, beautiful song called ballin'
>possibly thousands
lmao, I have clocked ten thousand hours in multiple video games. In no other circumstance is that something to brag about, but apparently I spend 10-100x more time on my hobby than you do on what you're claiming to be your identity-defining career.
based as frick. you really pissed off the midwits
i liked game too, hes just pretentious twat
lmfao this dude majored in philosphy
how's your job at starbucks going? you pay off your student loans yet? lmfao
>I'm very smart because I watched some Hollywood hacks
God this board gets dumber every day.
>Plenty of humanities experts grew up with video games at this point
kek, zoomer intellectuals for sure
>Philosophy major
>Tarantino
>Reading books is an achievment
Bro
Surely then you can see that very few games are actually well-written.
History PhD here.
Go read a book ya nerd
>Nu-uh! U dumb because reasons. I don't understand the difference between art and games as artistic medium. I need to understand the discourse, otherwise I get insecure about my intellectual capabilities.
>Games are better than art, because I don't understand art, and the fact that games is an artistic medium. I just like to watch numbers go up and hitting stuff in dungeons.
Congrats. You just read a summary of this whole thread.
I have a PhD in crpgs and I think Pillars of Eternity stinks
I like how Pillars made so many people seethe that its mere mention derails the entire thread.
>I like how Pillars made so many people seethe
Why, do you hate Obsidian?
"People" might be an overstatement
I still don't get it. Why is it good, to you, that someone doesn't like a game? Just schadenfreude?
What's not to like about it?
Because the "someone" are a loud minority of seething speds that can't form a coherent argument against the game. PoE has plently of valid flaws (half of the companions are underdeveloped, the start is too slow, weird Kickstarter OCs are a terrible addition etc.). But that's not what the Pillars Derangement Syndrome crowd dislikes. For them all the arguments can be summed up as "its not Faerune so its shit":
>Waaah, magic is weak!
>Waaah, its too lowtier (but ignore the threads where I VGH BG1 over BG2 because of its lowtier nature)
>Waaah, Paladinerinos aren't like in DnD!
>Waaah, different is bad because Sawyer strawman says "different is good"
These are the same exact idiots that schiz out over Dragon Age as well, but somewhat more rarely as they failed to shit up its reputation here as much as Pillars.
So it's just about being a fanboy?
perfidy is bad
say what? fricking sperg

You're not fooling anyone zizek, all you do is suck russian wiener and watch movies, lmao.
