this still doesn't address the issue of how 4 out of the 5 choices are just minor dialogue options and the emperor one is very easy to miss. like i said it would have made much more sense to make fighting the crones a choice or letting her accompany you or solve some quest on her own a choice. the entire point of those choices is to show that a father has to trust their children and not put them down too much by being over controlling and protective.
without hind sight and when you just see a few words of what geralt is actually going to say it's very hard to tell what's the right choice. no reason to reload a save when nothing indicates importance of the dialogue choice after you hear what geralt says

You kinda agree with me. Sapkowski dislikes generic fantasy tropes and Witcher was a subversion to them. That's why Geralt is a freak instead of "le destined hero from ancient legend", it's why the way Ciri is important isn't because she herself is relevant (which CDPR changed to make her an active participant in TW3's plot) but because the bad guys want to turn her into a baby factory. It's why the elves are moronic terrorists instead of LotR-tier "super beauties that are always in the right". It's why Yennefer is independent and as much an active character in the story as Geralt, and why they challenge each other until they confess their love to one another.
A big point in the books is how Destiny doesn't matter. Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer end up together not because Destiny ordered them to, but because *they wanted to*. Because they found out they loved each other, and wanted to be a family that cared about each other not because Ciri was the chosen one or whatever, but because she was their daughter. It's why Ciri runs away in the end, with Galahad next to her. The books are about *choosing* what you want to do, who you want to be. That's why forcing Ciri down the Empress path is pretty terrible, when all she wanted to do from day 1 was be free, and being a Witcher like Geralt.

Even Witcher 1 and Witcher 2 have a lot different of a general feel than Witcher 3 does. I've enjoyed all the games so I should probably just read the books one of these days but I was curious from people that have read them and played all the games which game was the most accurate interpretation of them.
A lot of Witcher 3 was totally random side stuff but it still felt like the books to me. It felt like situations that could have happened and the way that I play and the choices I naturally made felt like what Geralt would do and say in the books. I played the game first and then read the books a year later so I wasn't just "wishing" myself into feeling a certain way. I guess if you played the games like a troglodyte and made moronic feral bloodthirsty goblin choices that it wouldn't be anything like the books.
Witcher 1 is probably the closest in "feel" to the books, it makes sense too because it's the first one they made before they knew whether it'd be successful enough for sequels or not so they went all-in on essentially making it The Witcher: The Books: The Game. So TW1 Triss is not!Yen, Alvin is not!Ciri etc.
reading the books makes you realize the series would've been worthless without the games following it up with an actual story and climax

It's also important to distinguish that the books are divided in the short story compialtions (the first two books) which are the best written and the one that better showcase both the deconstruction aspect and Sapko's talents as a writer and the Saga proper, which are the last 5 books (not includiNg the 2013 one) that are full length novels that have a concise main plot.
As I've said the short stories are much better and genuinely very good. The author's more dry prose and dry humor work better in that format, the stories are to the point and with very little fat.
The novels start more or less in the same level, but get worse as it goes on. The author seems bored of his work, yet knows he's paid by the word so they're much longer, dull and full of useless things. The last two books are actually bad I'd say. A big point in the books is how Destiny doesn't matter. Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer end up together not because Destiny ordered them to, but because *they wanted to*. Because they found out they loved each other, and wanted to be a family that cared about each other not because Ciri was the chosen one or whatever, but because she was their daughter. It's why Ciri runs away in the end, with Galahad next to her. The books are about *choosing* what you want to do, who you want to be. That's why forcing Ciri down the Empress path is pretty terrible, when all she wanted to do from day 1 was be free, and being a Witcher like Geralt.

I've only played Witcher 3, I loved the books. However I'm fully capable of separating the media and I consider Witcher 3 and the other games as a "what if" fever dream.
Good to hear. I've heard a lot of conflicting stuff like Witcher 3 being pretty far from being accurate to the books but Blood and Wine being close to the "feel" of the books.
Even Witcher 1 and Witcher 2 have a lot different of a general feel than Witcher 3 does. I've enjoyed all the games so I should probably just read the books one of these days but I was curious from people that have read them and played all the games which game was the most accurate interpretation of them.
A lot of Witcher 3 was totally random side stuff but it still felt like the books to me. It felt like situations that could have happened and the way that I play and the choices I naturally made felt like what Geralt would do and say in the books. I played the game first and then read the books a year later so I wasn't just "wishing" myself into feeling a certain way. I guess if you played the games like a troglodyte and made moronic feral bloodthirsty goblin choices that it wouldn't be anything like the books.
Witcher 1 is probably the closest in "feel" to the books, it makes sense too because it's the first one they made before they knew whether it'd be successful enough for sequels or not so they went all-in on essentially making it The Witcher: The Books: The Game. So TW1 Triss is not!Yen, Alvin is not!Ciri etc.
reading the books makes you realize the series would've been worthless without the games following it up with an actual story and climax
also I didn't particularly enjoy the witcher 1 way back then but I've replayed it recently after reading the books and it is way more enjoyable
now I'll move on to the witcher 2 and see if it's the same with it

Yes, they are of decreasing quality, but still good fantasy, and are a great deconstruction of the genre.
It's also important to distinguish that the books are divided in the short story compialtions (the first two books) which are the best written and the one that better showcase both the deconstruction aspect and Sapko's talents as a writer and the Saga proper, which are the last 5 books (not includiNg the 2013 one) that are full length novels that have a concise main plot.
As I've said the short stories are much better and genuinely very good. The author's more dry prose and dry humor work better in that format, the stories are to the point and with very little fat.
The novels start more or less in the same level, but get worse as it goes on. The author seems bored of his work, yet knows he's paid by the word so they're much longer, dull and full of useless things. The last two books are actually bad I'd say. The ending also sucks and seems clearly the work of an author uninterested in having others continue his work.

Witcher 1 is probably the overall more accurate, since it's clear it was meant as a one off game and it really feels like a "Geralt's Best Hits" compilation with new actors.
