Its a good game. They kinda dumbed down the game since Oatchi can do almost anything you need a Pikmin to do and Ice Pikmin function quite well as unlimited bitter sprays from 2 (not to mention the consumable items you can just buy). The game picks up though. Getting gold on the Sage Leaf trials is not simple, but you just need to be smart about hoe you move and don't waste a second. God tier dandori is multitasking with switching back and forth and letting the auto "walk to" function give you time to control the other. Pikmin 3 did this really well with 3 captains but 2 caps gives you time to do more complicated actions and switch. Sometimes it's not even necessary because running around riding Oatchi and all the pikmin safely with you is just simpler and leaves less room for random pikmin deaths, but with this skill I never truly struggled with a night level before the last one, they had to throw 2 Smokey Proggs and an Emporer Bulblax at me to get me to sit up in my chair to play.

        >Pikmin 3 did this really well
The extra modes in Pikmin 3 make you a dandori God and even the hardest challenges in 4 do not come close to how difficult getting platinum is on a couple stages in 3.

      >Zero replay value
      Many reasons.
      >Intro segment too fricking long.
      >Early game caves too easy and simple.
      >All the caves are the same every time.
      >You CAN leave areas and come back later with new types but there's no reason to; each area and its caves are designed ONLY with the 3 recommended types in mind, so coming back later will seldom offer an advantage compared to just 100% the area while you're there.
      >Having to replay night missions and dandori stuff is not fun and just a waste of time. I guess you can just skip it with Dingo if you want but that still feels hollow.
      >No NG+ function to actually use shit like the Lineup Trumpet or Infinite Rush
      >Upgrades always unlock in the same order and are mostly tied to sparklium collected. You can't target certain upgrades on replays like you can in Pikmin 2.
      >Game is just too fricking large unironically to lend itself well to replays. I'm glad it's a long game but I don't want to replay it again anytime soon, takes too much time.

          Are you for real???

Doesn't the fact that you can't carry all types with you bother you???

          not really.
my main REAL problem with 4 was no respawning enemies.
once i realized that i NEVER took corpses back to the onion. i kept them all on the overworld until i found a new pikmin type then combed back through an entire area to repopulate that type.

also it made me unnecessarily slow in my exploration because i didn't want to just blow through an area, kill everything and then be stuck in a lifeless zone for several days while i pick up all the treasures. i like seeing the animals live in their environment

          2>4>1>3

Over the years I've found myself progressively more and more drawn to 2 and wishing we'd get another pikmin game with a heightened level of survival roguelike elements. 4 was at least amazing for having an equal, if not superior level of atmosphere to 2 thanks to the massive returning piklopedia/treasure horde notes and interesting reveals about the past.

Don't get me wrong, I was a STAUNCH 2gay foryears, even when iwas clearing 4 i was still skeptical, but as i played i realized that by limiting your options you are actually given more room for creative solutions using what you have.Italso allowed nintendoto make interesting cave layoputs and dandoori challenges, because they could more realistically expect what your toolkit would be, and by limiting that, it makes overcoming the challenges more engaging and satisfying. It also allows each type to shine more, vs just constantly being a bag of rainbow colored right answers at the wall and get rewarded for it

            >by limiting your options you are actually given more room for creative solutions
No you're not. That's how it SHOULD be but it's not. Every area and every cave is ONLY designed around the types it recommends. You never have to compromise or strategize like people thought you would. And if you do need other types for a cave, you can swap them out instantly anyways. When the type limit was revealed, people criticized past titles for just being able to walk around with all 5 types, prepared for everything, when P4 does the exact same thing except now you're walking around with 3 types, still prepared for everything -- even less "everything" than past titles since the areas are only designed for 3 types at max.

Yeah, as the 100 field limit being done incrementally. They way the did progression was ok, it was the nicest way to spit in my face they could do.

Honestly I'd agree if Oatchi couldn't do everything for you.
          >Something behind a hazard like fire, water, or poison fog?
Oatchi can go there and back, just buy the resist powerup
          >something high up yellow or winged pikmin can reach?
Have Oatchi charge the wall and it gets knocked down
          >something so big I need many to carry it back?
Oatchi can carry 100 units of mass, use him solo
Hell most enemies can't take an Oatchi charge dropping 100 pikmin on them, and any longlegs can't do anything to winged/glow Pikmin. Both Oatchi's chsrge stun and the glow Pikmin strobe make short work of anything, and the strobe stuns multiple enemies in an aoe of the point of contact.

Should have been a master of none to save you/compensate if you didn't bring a particular type but still needed some of their functionality. Instead Oatchi just does everything for you, defeating a good chunk of the multitasking since a captain w/out oatchi is relatively gimped.
            >combat
and then slather purples and sprays on top of it all. Imagine how fast the final boss would have gone down if it wasn't for damage caps.

              Anonymous

Bro idk how you have purples in a game and expect it to not be overpowered if you have Oatchi able to ferry them over water and attack an enemy. Same with ice, but I didn't like the fact frozen deaths never left bodies behind so I rarley used them. Of course you can just freeze them, get them very low, let them thaw and kill them.
To be 100% honest this is the most amazingly gracious Pikmin game to date. So little dumb shit happened when I wasn't trying to micromanage to the T. This may be the closest to a "Pikmin game with no bullshit" we can possibly reach. You still cannot be asleep at the wheel when fighting a Snagret, but at least there's a better than not chance the Snagrets not going to summon killer boulders to fall from the sky or erupt out if the ground with a sneak attack you can't defend from.

It's definitely the most polished in terms of detrimental randomness, but even still, they push player control even further by giving you infinite rewinds. It even prompts you if you leave 1 pikmin behind at sunset. It's amazing how far the pendulum swung in the other direction, and I think the game is worse for it, personally. Pikmin tripping and running off all the time in 1 and 2 was annoying from a gameplay standpoint, but it was a reminder that Pikmin were a real part of nature--an actual organism--instead of a rigid robot only awaiting your press of the A button to express itself as nothing but a tool of the player.

                Anonymous

2 gets so intense that I'm OK with them tightening up the Pikmin's AI and getting rid of tripping but 3 is the point where it starts to feel like baby mode with shit like calling them back to the onion. Though you can still lose a lot from the piles of gold.

I would put 4 over 2 if not for it being incredibly piss easy and the story being a reboot/soft-reboot in a series which absolutely didn't need it. 3's not bad, there's just a lot of little stuff about it that bothers me.

It's just weird because they actually did have a fantastic way to use oatchi...for moss.

why not just have his progression be gated like hers?? that would even encourage some cool speedruns where players rush certain items first for their powerups

      True
If Olimar's Tale was stretched out to the whole game that would be rad. It still gave nessicary powerups early but I didn't get to become OP by clearing everything.

It's GOTY actually. Gameplay is still unique and fresh. Polished to all hell. Sound design, art direction is evocative and immaculate (the vaunted 'soul'). The game is defined by its mechanics and level design, meaning it passes the purity test of being an honest videogame.
