what's really interesting, is that the submerged castle, one of the most unique tracks in the game, isn't random, it isn't affected by any of the triggers that modifies music, and was made with specifically to put the player on edge.

says as much on the official website, it clearly states no more than 3 types, while it doesn't state anything about the number in your squad. why would they directly say this if you could increase it? It's not like they even say "start with.." it flat out says you can only bring 3 at a time so you plan carefully
Since they are making sure you cannot have more than three types even when discovering new types, seems like a hard limit made to justify the dog, else you could actually play the game without using him at all, defeating the purpose of his inclusion.
While it's difficult to know for sure, keep in mind we haven't seen any charge for Pikmin in action until last week, and it's an upgrade you can buy from the start.
There are tons of upgrades and items hidden, we don't know what they can do, we don't even know if you can or not upgrade the onion, we will have to see. But we have renders with more than three types along Oatchi, so hopefully at some point you'll be able to have more than three. If not the game will leave a sour taste in my mouth.

So you should only enter caves with two types to ensure you'll either get the new type in the cave or at least the type needed for the cave, as hazards do not seem to be displayed anymore from the gameplay footage we've seen.

What I mean is, since we are limited to three types, let's say your limit is 50 Pikmin, you have 10 white 10 purple and 10 Ice, they bring a corpse to the onion going for the Reds, what happens? Do they spawn reds on the field or will it go straight to the onion instead ? Probably the latter but something to think about

nah, i'm really fricking excited for this game, and i think it's a shitty change, redditors are just brainless consumers, and the strategy added just becomes "spend the last minute of the day planning on what you'll do tomorrow." as opposed to "spend the last minute of the day planning on where you'll go tomorrow."
Two solutions I see:
1)you can throw many lire Pikmin in these flowers, like in 1 where you could have up to fifty sprouts per flower, so you can completely switch colors
2)Kill one type of Pikmin in your squad
Don't forget this change was made because they concluded the average player didn't have enough brain power to use more than three types at once.
Also why you now have notifications for fricking everything (wall broken, enemy defeated, Sheperd screaming whenever Oatchi is hurt)

they tested internally what it was like controlling olimar/louie separately back in the day split screen style and found it shitty. it's fine for smaller multiplayer stages but they don't want to ruin the perspective of story mode. same thing here.

No, collars you bought are cumulated, once you buy one, you and Oatchi are immune to the hazard. It's like Pikmin 2 and 3; they appear as different suits, but it's really just upgrades to your character.

The leaders couldn't carry Pikmin nor items, jump or destroy walls either. It made things convenient but the captains didn't become extremely strong.
We know at a point that Oatchi can have the carrying capacity of 20 Pikmin (seen in the footage for 2 battle mode), and it's only super buff lvl 1. Possibly he will carry like 50 or even 100 Pikmin.

The ship only talks to you when you enter a cave for the first time and when you face an hazard. In 3, when you lost Pikmin or got hurt, you already had speech text appearing in the middle of the screen. In 4, we have seen the Sheperd and Collin complaining about Oatchi being hurt and Pikmin being eaten. If it's not an option to disable, that will suck too.

it does when your pikmin is hurt by a hazard that hasn't affected one of them before (eg. water poison etc) I was playing 2 yesterday and over halfway through the game I still got interrupted because my pikmin hadn't been hurt by poison yet, and then one did
You say dumbed down, but I'm hoping with the limitations they are able to make the game more challenging. Pikmin 2 kept me engaged but pikmin 3 I nearly dropped for how braindead it was.

I'm getting filtered in 3. Managing 3 people and splitting pikmin up is kinda finicky. Some of them decide to just stop following me and sometimes I can't get them to stop trying to carry shit when I don't want them to. I miss being able to rally your squad with the C stick.
don't worry too hard about multitasking, when pikmin are working on stuff you have to whistle twice to get them off it, which is weird but i get why they'd change that.

Well.. Reduce backtracking looks dogshit. The rewind feature... how it works exactly? you Rewind your day, or rewind in action? like a rewind on emulators, frame to frame. If it's just rewind the day, i think it's ok. You could do it on pikmin 3 and quitting/loading after a huge pikmin loss was always a strategy.
The essential aspects of Oatchi mentioned here are the functions we'd get with a 2nd captain, aren't they? You need to switch to him to solve puzzles and to help with multitasking.
I'm just going off what aspects of Oatchi the previews describe as 'essential'. I'm not too thrilled with how powerful the dog can get in theory, either, but I also am unsure how much this game will actually end up being: Oatchi, guest starring Pikmin 4. I'd say the worst detail so far is that the 3 Pikmin limit seems to outright prevent you from recruiting new species of Pikmin you might find underground. It seems like a glaring oversight.

Pikmin WAS NEVER hard to beggin. I think it's more a hardware issue than a "second player is moron so no". Splitscreens are hard.
I think that they want to make maps biggers, with more elements, random little puzzles, rescues... This doesn't match with the time limit, resource management veins of the first game, it's just too limiting, you can't create a big map with lots of verticality when you give the player a SET time to beat the game. Maybe you can, but that's not the focus.

it's funny how pikmin 2 is more stressful than 1 because of how catastrophic things can get in the caves
like yeah you can regrow them but it's a fricking pain in the gooch. pikmin 1 is relaxing once you've played it before. it's honestly too easy unless you're going for an ultra-low day run

I don't know, some spider frick electrocuted all my pikmin except for 18 yellows and I managed to still get 14/14 treasures. I thought I was fricked, but as far as I could tell, it seemed like the final floor scaled to how many pikmin I had. They took down barriers and the boss fairly quickly, but when I had 100 pikmin, the barriers took a while and enemies were fairly durable

pikmin 4 will be babyslop. even with difficulty hacks on 3 they only made making fruit collection more strategic, the enemies were still piss easy. unfortunate that the unforgiving nature of the games has been lost. you'd think with additional rollback/rewind mechanics they'd be more willing to add harder challenges and monsters to balance it out but no, nu-tendo coddles their infantile audience.

After all these years I finally get it:
In primary school there used to be one of those slow kids, normal but dumb enough to need a personal TA, I think we all had that pretty dumb and very cringy kid, that otherwise didn't seem autistic but had some sort of condition.
Well anyways, he was absolutely obsessed with pikmen, and the rest of the class being normies like me, nobody knew or cared what it was.
Well one day he was happy and bragging how he got a new brother in some class presentation (show and tell or something don't remember), and said his name was Olimar.
The class was confused, most people's reaction was "don't you mean Oliver?" and laughed at him, but he insisted oliver.
So apparently the parents listened to their pikman obsessed kid to name their after what I now know to be a main character of a nintendo game no other kid knows and cares about and will probably be bullied for it.
Do people actually have 3 as their favorite? It was still fun but it was really short and it felt way more railroaded than 1 or 2 was, and the juice system was a middling compromise between 1's urgent time limit and 2's absolute freedom.

I'm so fricking glad they limited the pikmin types at a time to 3 and gave us oatchi. I had so much choice paralysis in 1 and 2. Now that we have oatchi I can just run around with whatever pikmin look coolest and have oatchi take care of all the hazards and obstacles. This is gonna be the most chill pikmin game yet. Really smoothbrained in the best possible way.

I'm also super stoked that we are gonna use less than 100 pikmin. The switch is getting kind of old and I hope using less pikmin will keep framerates up! It's also annoying when you're throwing pikmin and for some reason it changes what type you're using. I've never been able to clear the debt in 2 because of it. I'm also super excited for the coop mode! 3 deluxe had an alright coop but everyone only uses coop to play with their little brothers/kids so it was annoying letting them actually be able to do stuff. My emotional support 6 year old brother will have a lot of fun I'm sure, but I will too! Also so happy they removed mission mode, I was never able to get platinum medals. It's great that nintendo is finally making the game for real fans! I don't have time to master a game by playing it 8 hours everyday lol. (too busy playin with my pupper, but Oatchi might make me play a bit more of 4 LOL)
If only you used all this passion and manpower on something you could be happy about, like making your own game (and no, I'm not going 'ugh make your own game if you don't like this one, I just see energy being vented in a less than ideal way and hope that you can put that energy to better use)
I saw Oatchi at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical interference,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
xvi had the timing for the demo release revealed for each region days ahead of its launch at a pretty high profile press event. people then got hyped for the demo, played it, it sold them on the game. the game has now sold 3 million copies.

the previous games in the franchise stopped gameplay and showed a cutscene whenever a pikmin got hit by a particular hazard type for the first time in your save file. the dog is just a big pikmin, it makes sense attention is drawn to him.
im going to go a little schizo here but bear with me. as higher numbers of young people are single/without children, people increasingly look to pets to fill that void. i notice in my neighborhood so many young women who don't seem to have a partner and have a dog. less single men but still, odds are you have a dog or a cat if you're a single young person still hungry for companionship as should be your biological imperative.
this tendency is only going to increase as the romance/sex situation gets more fraught in the united states. higher numbers of lonely people = more pet fawning.

Thinking about it more, despite how overpowered Oatchi will be at the endgame, during the early game you'll have to actually think about what upgrades you want to give him based on what Pikmin you do and no not have, which Pikmin are worth bringing in your 2-3 options (still too fricking low, should have been 5), and what you currently have access to. It's not completely braindead, it still involves planning, but I also am just against most upgrade systems in general so whatever.
Oatchi is a fricking unnecessary addition to this series. OMG ZOMG THE CUTE DOGGO MUST PET SO CUTE bullshit to sell more copies while at the same time severely breaking the gameplay loop of the game.
I don't have an issue with Oatchi and his functions.
But the fact they removed my ability to have more than three types of Pikmin at once to force Oatchi's role irritates me a bit. I was, and still am, planning on using him a lot because I like him, but I would have loved to have more options available to me if I wanted a challenge by using only Pikmin.

purples were just over-tuned / broken, they didn't fundamentally dumb-down the game though. You still had to atleast think about mid-end game enemy encounters and bosses. And the pain of having to get more sort of offset it.

what's really interesting, is that the submerged castle, one of the most unique tracks in the game, isn't random, it isn't affected by any of the triggers that modifies music, and was made with specifically to put the player on edge.

While it's difficult to know for sure, keep in mind we haven't seen any charge for Pikmin in action until last week, and it's an upgrade you can buy from the start.
There are tons of upgrades and items hidden, we don't know what they can do, we don't even know if you can or not upgrade the onion, we will have to see. But we have renders with more than three types along Oatchi, so hopefully at some point you'll be able to have more than three. If not the game will leave a sour taste in my mouth.

So you should only enter caves with two types to ensure you'll either get the new type in the cave or at least the type needed for the cave, as hazards do not seem to be displayed anymore from the gameplay footage we've seen.

1)you can throw many lire Pikmin in these flowers, like in 1 where you could have up to fifty sprouts per flower, so you can completely switch colors
2)Kill one type of Pikmin in your squad
Probably the buds are simply closed until you come back with an empty "slot"

No, collars you bought are cumulated, once you buy one, you and Oatchi are immune to the hazard. It's like Pikmin 2 and 3; they appear as different suits, but it's really just upgrades to your character.

We know at a point that Oatchi can have the carrying capacity of 20 Pikmin (seen in the footage for 2 battle mode), and it's only super buff lvl 1. Possibly he will carry like 50 or even 100 Pikmin.

The ship only talks to you when you enter a cave for the first time and when you face an hazard. In 3, when you lost Pikmin or got hurt, you already had speech text appearing in the middle of the screen. In 4, we have seen the Sheperd and Collin complaining about Oatchi being hurt and Pikmin being eaten. If it's not an option to disable, that will suck too.

I'm getting filtered in 3. Managing 3 people and splitting pikmin up is kinda finicky. Some of them decide to just stop following me and sometimes I can't get them to stop trying to carry shit when I don't want them to. I miss being able to rally your squad with the C stick.
don't worry too hard about multitasking, when pikmin are working on stuff you have to whistle twice to get them off it, which is weird but i get why they'd change that.

I'm just going off what aspects of Oatchi the previews describe as 'essential'. I'm not too thrilled with how powerful the dog can get in theory, either, but I also am unsure how much this game will actually end up being: Oatchi, guest starring Pikmin 4. I'd say the worst detail so far is that the 3 Pikmin limit seems to outright prevent you from recruiting new species of Pikmin you might find underground. It seems like a glaring oversight.
None of the things you people complain about are dealbreakers for me, I think I'll enjoy this just as I enjoyed the rest of the series. Might even be my favorite, who knows

Pikmin WAS NEVER hard to beggin. I think it's more a hardware issue than a "second player is moron so no". Splitscreens are hard.
I think that they want to make maps biggers, with more elements, random little puzzles, rescues... This doesn't match with the time limit, resource management veins of the first game, it's just too limiting, you can't create a big map with lots of verticality when you give the player a SET time to beat the game. Maybe you can, but that's not the focus.

I don't know, some spider frick electrocuted all my pikmin except for 18 yellows and I managed to still get 14/14 treasures. I thought I was fricked, but as far as I could tell, it seemed like the final floor scaled to how many pikmin I had. They took down barriers and the boss fairly quickly, but when I had 100 pikmin, the barriers took a while and enemies were fairly durable

I'm also super stoked that we are gonna use less than 100 pikmin. The switch is getting kind of old and I hope using less pikmin will keep framerates up! It's also annoying when you're throwing pikmin and for some reason it changes what type you're using. I've never been able to clear the debt in 2 because of it. I'm also super excited for the coop mode! 3 deluxe had an alright coop but everyone only uses coop to play with their little brothers/kids so it was annoying letting them actually be able to do stuff. My emotional support 6 year old brother will have a lot of fun I'm sure, but I will too! Also so happy they removed mission mode, I was never able to get platinum medals. It's great that nintendo is finally making the game for real fans! I don't have time to master a game by playing it 8 hours everyday lol. (too busy playin with my pupper, but Oatchi might make me play a bit more of 4 LOL)

xvi had the timing for the demo release revealed for each region days ahead of its launch at a pretty high profile press event. people then got hyped for the demo, played it, it sold them on the game. the game has now sold 3 million copies.

this game is the epitome of it though. Throw out gameplay so that the dog is more important. Constantly interrupt the player whenever the dog takes damage. Call the dog a good boy whenever it does anything. It will get old really fast.

the previous games in the franchise stopped gameplay and showed a cutscene whenever a pikmin got hit by a particular hazard type for the first time in your save file. the dog is just a big pikmin, it makes sense attention is drawn to him.
im going to go a little schizo here but bear with me. as higher numbers of young people are single/without children, people increasingly look to pets to fill that void. i notice in my neighborhood so many young women who don't seem to have a partner and have a dog. less single men but still, odds are you have a dog or a cat if you're a single young person still hungry for companionship as should be your biological imperative.
this tendency is only going to increase as the romance/sex situation gets more fraught in the united states. higher numbers of lonely people = more pet fawning.

Thinking about it more, despite how overpowered Oatchi will be at the endgame, during the early game you'll have to actually think about what upgrades you want to give him based on what Pikmin you do and no not have, which Pikmin are worth bringing in your 2-3 options (still too fricking low, should have been 5), and what you currently have access to. It's not completely braindead, it still involves planning, but I also am just against most upgrade systems in general so whatever.
Oatchi is a fricking unnecessary addition to this series. OMG ZOMG THE CUTE DOGGO MUST PET SO CUTE bullshit to sell more copies while at the same time severely breaking the gameplay loop of the game.

I don't have an issue with Oatchi and his functions.
But the fact they removed my ability to have more than three types of Pikmin at once to force Oatchi's role irritates me a bit. I was, and still am, planning on using him a lot because I like him, but I would have loved to have more options available to me if I wanted a challenge by using only Pikmin.

i think the pathfinding is random from what i had seen, dosn't take into account the resistances of pikmins,
pikmin carry stuff on fixed defined paths, so whoever placed the snagret there did so intentionally to block your mins

the limit is gonna add more progression if anything. You have to actually work towards getting 100 pikmin now instead of grinding them all in like 5 minutes of play.

Is there a romhack to add go here to pikmin 2? It would be the best in the series. You only use both captains for like 3 obvious puzzles, it would be nice to be able to use them productively.

purples were just over-tuned / broken, they didn't fundamentally dumb-down the game though. You still had to atleast think about mid-end game enemy encounters and bosses. And the pain of having to get more sort of offset it.
4 is completely changing the kind of game it is and removing micro from a game that was all about carefully implementing it in a casual-but-good console RTS.

How much a pikmin can carry also depends partly on the shape of the object. The dumbbell is an awkward shape so it takes more strength.
